To reduce the risk of image retention, please follow these steps:

• When using video games, computers, and similar products with your projection TV, or viewing a TV station whose logo always stays on the screen, keep the Brightness and Picture functions at low settings.

• View a variety of programming material. Changing the program material viewed reduces the possibility that a single image will become imprinted on the screens.

• This TV was designed primarily for viewing TV broadcasts in wide screen mode (16:9 aspect ratio). Therefore when viewing conventional (4:3) aspect ratio TV programs, select Wide Mode settings that fill the image on your screen. This will reduce the possibility of the gray sidebars becoming permanently imprinted.

Please adhere to the following safety instructions:

• Operate the projection TV only on 120 V AC.

• The plug is designed for safety purposes to fit into the wall outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, contact your dealer.

• If any liquid or solid object should fall inside the cabinet, unplug the projection TV immediately and have it checked by qualified service personnel before operating it further.

• If you will not be using the projection TV for several days, disconnect the power by pulling the plug itself. Never pull on the cord.

• When moving the projection TV, be careful not to drop it on your foot or fingers.

• Carry the projection TV with four or more people. Do not carry the TV by holding the speaker grill. Hold it tightly when carrying.

For proper installation and optimal performance, please follow these guidelines:

• To prevent internal heat buildup, do not block the ventilation openings.

• Do not install the projection TV in a hot or humid place, or in a place subject to excessive dust or mechanical vibration.

• Avoid operating the projection TV at temperatures below 5°C (41°F).

• If the projection TV is transported directly from a cold to a warm location, or if the room temperature changes suddenly, the picture may be blurred or show poor color due to moisture condensation. In this case, please wait a few hours to let the moisture evaporate before turning on the projection TV.

• To obtain the best picture, do not expose the screen to direct illumination or direct sunlight. It is recommended to use spot lighting directed down from the ceiling or to cover the windows that face the screen with opaque drapery. It is desirable to install the projection TV in a room where the floor and walls are not of a reflective material.

Clean the cabinet of the projection TV with a dry, soft cloth. To clean the screen of your projection TV, please use only a clean, soft cloth lightly dampened with water. Stubborn stains such as fingerprints can be removed with a clean, soft cloth lightly dampened with a solution of mild soap and warm water. Never use alcohol or strong solvents (such as thinner, benzene, ammonia, or alcohol-based), or abrasive cleaning solutions to clean your TV screen.

If the picture becomes dark after using the projection TV for a long period of time, it may be necessary to clean the inside of the projection TV. Consult qualified service personnel.

For the best viewing experience, position your SONY KDP-57WS655 according to these recommendations:

Recommended Vertical Viewing Angle:

• The vertical viewing angle should be within 20 degrees above or below the center of the screen.

Recommended Horizontal Viewing Angle:

• The horizontal viewing angle should be within 60 degrees to the left or right of the center of the screen.

Recommended Viewing Distance:

• For the 51-inch model, the minimum viewing distance is approximately 7 feet (2.1m).

• For the 57-inch model, the minimum viewing distance is approximately 8 feet (2.4m).

If you are connecting a cable or an antenna and you do not need a cable box and do not intend to connect a VCR, follow these instructions based on your cable type:

75-ohm coaxial cable (usually found in newer homes):

• For VHF Only or combined VHF/UHF antenna: Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable to the VHF/UHF jack on the TV.

• For Cable: Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable to the CABLE jack on the TV.

300-ohm twin lead cable (usually found in older homes):

• For VHF Only, UHF Only, or combined VHF/UHF: Connect the 300-ohm twin lead cable to an antenna connector (not supplied), and then connect the antenna connector to the VHF/UHF jack on the TV.

75-ohm coaxial and 300-ohm twin lead cable (found in some homes):

• For VHF and UHF: Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable (VHF) and the 300-ohm twin lead cable (UHF) to a U/V mixer (not supplied). Then connect the U/V mixer to the VHF/UHF jack on the TV.

If you have both a cable and an antenna and do not have a cable box or VCR, follow this connection method:

1. Connect your CATV (cable TV) cable to the CABLE input on the back of the TV.

2. Connect your antenna cable to the VHF/UHF input on the back of the TV.

To switch between the cable and antenna inputs, press the ANT button on your remote control.

If your cable company scrambles some premium channels but not all channels, and you do not have a VCR, use this connection:

1. Connect the CATV cable from the wall to the input of a 2-way splitter.

2. Connect one coaxial cable from one output of the splitter to the CABLE input on your TV. This will carry the unscrambled channels.

3. Connect another coaxial cable from the other output of the splitter to the input of your cable box.

4. Connect a third coaxial cable from the output of your cable box to the VHF/UHF input on your TV. This will carry the scrambled channels.

With this setup, you can press the ANT button on your remote to switch between the VHF/UHF input (for scrambled channels via the cable box) and the CABLE input (for unscrambled channels directly).

If your cable company scrambles all channels, requiring a cable box, and you do not have a VCR, follow these steps:

1. Connect the CATV cable from the wall to the IN jack on the cable box.

2. Use a coaxial cable to connect the OUT jack on the cable box to the VHF/UHF jack on the TV.

3. Run the Auto Program feature as described in “Setting Up the Channel List”.

To use the cable box, tune your TV to the channel the cable box is set to (usually channel 3 or 4) and then use the cable box remote to change channels.

To connect a VCR and a cable signal that does not require a cable box, follow these steps:

1. Connect the CATV cable from the wall to the VCR’s VHF/UHF input jack.

2. Use a coaxial cable to connect the VCR’s VHF/UHF output jack to the TV’s CABLE jack.

3. Use an A/V cable (yellow, red, white) to connect the VCR’s A/V output jacks to the TV’s VIDEO 1 A/V input jacks.

4. Run Auto Program on the TV.

To watch the VCR, press TV/VIDEO on the remote to select the VIDEO 1 input. To watch cable channels, press TV/VIDEO to select the CABLE input.

To connect a VCR and a cable box where some channels are scrambled, you will need a splitter and four coaxial cables. Follow these steps:

1. Connect the CATV cable to the single (input) jack of the splitter.

2. Use a coaxial cable to connect one of the splitter’s two output jacks to the TV’s CABLE jack.

3. Use a coaxial cable to connect the splitter’s other output jack to the cable box’s input jack.

4. Use a coaxial cable to connect the cable box’s output jack to the VCR’s RF input jack.

5. Use a coaxial cable to connect the VCR’s RF output jack to the TV’s VHF/UHF jack.

6. Use an A/V cable to connect the cable box’s A/V output jacks to the TV’s VIDEO 3 A/V input jacks.

7. Use an A/V cable to connect the VCR’s A/V output jacks to the TV’s VIDEO 1 A/V input jacks.

8. Run Auto Program on the TV.

To connect a satellite receiver, follow these steps:

1. Connect the satellite antenna cable to the satellite receiver’s satellite input jack.

2. Use an A/V cable to connect the satellite receiver’s A/V output jacks to the TV’s VIDEO 1 A/V input jacks.

3. Connect a CATV cable from your cable or antenna to the TV’s CABLE jack.

4. Run Auto Program on the TV.

To watch the satellite receiver, press the TV/VIDEO button on your remote repeatedly to select the VIDEO 1 input.

For the best picture quality from your DVD player, use a component video connection. The Y, PB, and PR jacks on your DVD player are sometimes labeled Y, CB and CR, or Y, B-Y and R-Y.

1. Use three separate component video cables (usually colored red, green, and blue) to connect the DVD player’s Y, PB, and PR output jacks to the Y, PB, and PR jacks for VIDEO 5 on the TV. Connect the cables to like colors.

2. Use an audio cable (red and white) to connect the DVD player’s audio output jacks to the TV’s VIDEO 5 audio input jacks.

To watch the DVD player, press the TV/VIDEO button on the remote to select the VIDEO 5 input. Note that you cannot record the signal from equipment connected via component video jacks.

For easy connection, the SONY KDP-57WS655 has front A/V input jacks.

1. Use A/V cables (yellow, red, white) to connect the camcorder’s A/V output jacks to the TV’s front A/V input jacks (VIDEO 2 IN).

If you have a mono camcorder, connect its single audio output jack to the TV’s L (MONO) audio jack.

To watch the camcorder, press the TV/VIDEO button repeatedly to select the camcorder input (VIDEO 2).

For improved sound quality, you can play the TV’s audio through your stereo system.

1. Use an audio cable (red and white) to connect the TV’s AUDIO OUT jacks to the audio receiver’s line input jacks.

2. Using the TV’s Audio Menu, set the Speaker option to Off. Then set the Audio Out option to Fixed or Variable, depending on how you want to control the volume.

3. Turn on the audio receiver, and then set the receiver’s line input to the jack into which you connected the TV.

If you have a device, such as an HDTV receiver, that has a DVI (Digital Video Interface) output, use the following connection:

1. Use an HDMI-to-DVI cable to connect the device’s DVI OUT jack to the TV’s HDMI IN jack.

2. Use an audio cable to connect the device’s audio output jacks to the TV’s HDMI analog audio input jacks (L/R).

To watch the DVI device, press the TV/VIDEO button repeatedly to select the VIDEO 7 input.

If you have a device, such as an HDTV receiver, that has a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) output, use the following connection:

1. Use an HDMI cable to connect the device’s HDMI OUT jack to the TV’s HDMI IN jack.

HDMI cables transmit both audio and video signals, so separate audio cables are not necessary.

To watch the HDMI device, press the TV/VIDEO button repeatedly to select the VIDEO 7 input.

Activating CableCARD Service

1. Turn off the TV.

2. Insert the CableCARD (supplied by your cable TV company) into the TV’s CableCARD slot on the rear panel. The top of the CableCARD should be on the same side as the indicator on the slot.

3. Gently push the card into the slot until it locks into place.

4. Turn on the TV. After 1-2 minutes, the CableCARD setup screen is displayed. This screen includes information your cable TV company will request.

5. Follow the displayed instructions: Phone your cable company. A representative will guide you through the activation process.

6. After your CableCARD is activated, your cable TV company will download the service information. The TV will then tune to the lowest available channel.

Removing the CableCARD

1. Turn off the TV.

2. Push the eject button on the TV’s CableCARD slot to release the card.

3. Pull the CableCARD straight out of the slot to remove it.

After you finish connecting the TV, you need to run the Initial Setup feature, which appears when you turn on your TV for the first time.

1. Press POWER to turn on the TV. The Initial Setup screen appears.

2. Using the remote control, move the highlight to the desired language, then press the center button to select that language.

3. The next screen instructs you to connect your cable/antenna. Check that you’ve connected your signal source correctly. To start Auto Program, highlight Yes and then press the center button.

Auto Program automatically creates a list of receivable channels. This may take 50 minutes or more to complete. The lowest numbered channel is displayed when finished.

If you are using a CableCARD, Auto Program is disabled for the CABLE input.

To reset the TV to its original factory settings, follow these steps:

1. Press POWER to turn on the TV.

2. Hold down RESET on the remote control.

3. While still holding RESET, press POWER on the TV.

4. Release RESET. The TV will turn itself off, then back on with factory settings restored.

Before you use your TV, be sure to run the Flash Focus feature to automatically adjust the color projection settings. For best results, allow the TV to warm up for about 30 minutes before you adjust the convergence.

1. Tune to a TV or cable TV program.

2. Press the FLASH FOCUS button on the front panel of the TV.

The cross pattern appears and Flash Focus begins to work. The adjustment is completed when the TV picture returns. You cannot perform any other functions until Flash Focus has completed its cycle.

The Convergence feature allows you to fine-tune the picture’s convergence. Before adjusting manually, you must first perform Flash Focus. Allow the TV to warm up for about 30 minutes.

1. Press MENU to display the Menu.

2. Press the arrow buttons to highlight the Setup icon and press the center button.

3. Highlight Convergence and press the center button. A pattern of white crosses appears.

4. Use the arrow buttons to move the yellow box to surround a cross that you want to adjust. Press the center button. The box changes to red.

5. If the cross has red edges, use the arrow buttons to move the red image until it aligns with the green/blue image, forming a white cross. Once finished, press the center button. The box changes to blue.

6. If the cross has blue edges, use the arrow buttons to move the blue image until it aligns with the green/red image, forming a white cross. Once finished, press the center button. The box changes to yellow again.

7. Repeat steps 4 to 6 to adjust other crosses. When finished, press MENU to exit.

1. Remove the battery cover from the remote control.

2. Insert two size AA (R6) batteries (supplied) by matching the + and – terminals on the batteries to the diagram inside the battery compartment.

3. Replace the battery cover.

The remote control is preset to operate Sony brand video equipment. To control other brands, you need to program it.

1. Turn to the list of “Manufacturer’s Codes” in the manual and find the three-digit code for your equipment.

2. While holding down DVD/VCR FUNCTION or SAT/CABLE FUNCTION, press RESET. Then release both buttons. (The function button will flash.)

3. Press either DVD/VCR FUNCTION or SAT/CABLE FUNCTION, depending on which button you want to program.

4. Enter the three-digit manufacturer’s code number.

5. Press ENT. You must do this within 10 seconds of step 4.

6. To check if the code works, aim the remote at the equipment and press the corresponding POWER button. If it responds, you are done. If not, try another code listed for that manufacturer.

After programming the remote for your non-Sony equipment, you can control it as follows:

Operating a VCR:

• Press DVD/VCR FUNCTION to activate VCR mode.

• Use the transport buttons (Play, Stop, Fast forward, Rewind, Pause, Record) to control the VCR.

Operating a Satellite Receiver:

• Press SAT/CABLE FUNCTION to activate Satellite mode.

• Use buttons like SAT/CABLE POWER, CH +/-, 0-9, ENT, GUIDE, and MENU to control the receiver.

Operating a Cable Box:

• Press SAT/CABLE FUNCTION to activate Cable Box mode.

• Use buttons like SAT/CABLE POWER, CH +/-, 0-9, and ENT to control the cable box.

The program guide lets you review program information and select channels.

1. Press GUIDE on the TV’s remote control. The program guide appears.

2. To scroll through the channel list, press the up/down arrow buttons.

3. To select the currently displayed channel and exit the guide, press the center button.

4. To display additional options (like Alternate Video or Audio), press the right arrow button.

5. To exit the Guide without changing channels, press GUIDE again.

Press the WIDE MODE button on the remote repeatedly to toggle through the available picture size settings. The options vary depending on the signal source.

For Standard Definition (480i/480p) Sources:

• Wide Zoom: Enlarges the center portion of the picture proportionately. The left and right edges are stretched to fill the 16:9 screen.

• Normal: Displays the 4:3 picture in its original size. Bars are shown on the sides.

• Full: Stretches the 4:3 picture horizontally to fill the 16:9 screen.

• Zoom: Enlarges the 4:3 picture proportionately to fill the 16:9 screen. Some clipping may occur.

For High-Definition (720p/1080i) Sources:

• Full: Displays the picture at its original size. A 16:9 signal will fill the screen.

• Wide Zoom: Enlarges the center portion of the picture proportionately with stretched sides.

• Zoom: Enlarges the picture proportionately, both vertically and horizontally. Some clipping may occur.

Twin View lets you see two pictures from two different sources on the screen at the same time.

1. Displaying Twin Pictures: Tune the TV to a working channel and press the Twin View button on the remote. A second picture appears, and the active picture is highlighted.

2. Activating a Picture: Use the left and right arrow buttons to activate (highlight) the left or right picture. The sound will come from the active picture.

3. Changing the Picture Size: Press the up or down arrow buttons to enlarge or shrink the active picture, changing the relative size of the two windows.

4. Canceling Twin View: To cancel Twin View and watch the active picture full screen, press the Twin View button or the center button on the remote.

You can create a list of up to 16 favorite channels.

Setting Favorite Channels in the Menu:

1. Press MENU, then navigate to the Channel icon and select it.

2. Select Favorite Channels.

3. Use the 0-9 and ENT buttons to enter the channel number you want to assign to a favorite slot. A preview appears in the upper right.

4. To add more channels, repeat step 3. To clear a channel, highlight it and press RESET.

5. Press MENU to exit.

Using the Favorite Channels Guide:

1. Press FAVORITES. The Favorite Channels list appears.

2. Use the up/down arrow buttons to highlight the channel you want to watch.

3. Press the center button to select the channel.

The FREEZE button allows you to temporarily capture a program’s picture. This feature is not available while using Twin View.

1. When the information you want to capture is displayed, press FREEZE.

2. The TV switches to Twin View mode and displays the “frozen” picture on the right, while the current program continues on the left.

3. To cancel and return to normal viewing, press FREEZE again (or just tune to another channel).

Inserting a Memory Stick:

1. Locate the Memory Stick slot on the front panel of the TV.

2. Insert the Memory Stick into the slot as illustrated. When inserted properly, it should slide in with little resistance and click into place.

Removing a Memory Stick:

1. Check that the Memory Stick indicator LED is off.

2. Push the Memory Stick gently into the slot, and then release it. The Memory Stick will be ejected.

3. Pull the Memory Stick completely out of the slot.

The Video Menu allows you to adjust picture settings. Here are the main options:

• Mode: Select a preset picture mode (Vivid, Standard, Movie, Pro).

• Picture: Adjusts picture contrast.

• Brightness: Adjusts the brightness or darkness of the picture.

• Color: Adjusts color intensity.

• Hue: Adjusts the green tones.

• Sharpness: Adjusts the sharpness or softness of the picture.

• Color Temp: Selects the white intensity (Cool, Neutral, Warm).

• ClearEdge VM: Sharpens picture definition (High, Medium, Low, Off).

• Advanced Video: Accesses DRC Mode, CineMotion, Color Axis, and Noise Reduction settings.

• Mode Memory: Controls how Mode settings are applied to each video input.

The Audio Menu includes the following options:

• Treble: Adjust higher-pitched sounds.

• Bass: Adjust lower-pitched sounds.

• Balance: Emphasize left or right speaker balance.

• Steady Sound: Stabilizes volume levels between programs and commercials.

• Effect: Selects an audio effect (TruSurround, Simulated, Off).

• MTS: Selects audio options for analog programs (Stereo, Auto SAP, Mono).

• Audio Out: Controls the volume output when connected to an external audio system (Variable, Fixed).

• Speaker: Turns the TV’s internal speakers On or Off.

The Parent Menu allows you to block programs according to their content and rating levels.

1. Press MENU and navigate to the Parental Lock icon, then press the center button.

2. Use the 0-9 buttons on the remote to enter a four-digit password. If it’s your first time, you will need to enter it twice to confirm.

3. The Parent Menu options will appear. You can turn Parental Lock On or Off.

4. When On, you can select a rating system (Child, Youth, Y. Adult) for simplified blocking, or select Custom to set specific US or Canadian movie and TV ratings to block.

5. You can also change your password from this menu.

You need your password for any future access to the Parent Menu.

If your remote control is not working, try the following solutions:

• The batteries could be weak. Replace the batteries.

• Check the orientation of the batteries.

• Press the TV FUNCTION button. You may have inadvertently pressed the SAT/CABLE FUNCTION button, which changes the remote control to SAT or CABLE mode.

• Make sure the TV’s power cord is connected securely to the wall outlet.

• Locate the TV at least 3-4 feet away from fluorescent lights.

If you are unable to change channels, please check the following:

• If you are using the TV to change channels, first press the TV FUNCTION button.

• If you are using another device (like a cable box) to change channels, be sure you have not inadvertently switched your TV from the channel 3 or 4 setting. Use the Channel Fix option in the Channel Menu to “fix” the channel.

• If you are using another device to change channels, be sure to press the FUNCTION button for that device (e.g., SAT/CABLE FUNCTION for a cable box).

If you are missing digital cable channels, consider these possible reasons:

• Certain cable TV companies have limitations on the broadcast of digital cable channels. Check with your cable TV company for more information.

• Check with your cable TV company if the channels are scrambled or encrypted. You will need a CableCARD or a separate set-top box to view those channels.

• Some optional digital cable broadcast formats may not be supported. You may need a separate set-top box from your provider.

• The digital cable channel may be set to Hide in the Channel Menu.

• Use the Digital Channels feature in the Channel Menu to search for new digital channels.

If your TV does not seem to be turning on, try these steps:

• If a red light keeps flashing, your TV may need service. Call your local Sony Service Center.

• Make sure the power cord is plugged in.

• Press the POWER button on the front of the TV.

• Press the TV/VIDEO button to cycle through the connected video sources.

• Try another channel; it could be station trouble.

Some wide-screen programs are filmed in aspect ratios that are greater than 16:9, such as 2.35:1. (This is especially common with theatrical releases). Your TV will show these programs with bars at the top and bottom of the screen. This is normal for that type of content. For more details, check the documentation that came with your DVD or contact your program provider.

In the password screen, enter the following master password: 4357. The master password clears your previous password; it cannot be used to temporarily unblock channels.
