With the SONY ILME-FX2, you can connect the camera to a network via a wired LAN or wireless LAN and transfer still images and movies to an FTP server.

By individually configuring the network connection settings and FTP server settings, you can flexibly switch between the following transfer methods according to the shooting environment and data transfer environment:

• Selecting the type of image to transfer, such as still images/movies, protected images, or yet-to-be-transferred images, and transferring them in a batch.

• Transferring still images/movies automatically during shooting.

• Transferring playback images one by one.

You can also choose the type of still-image/movie file to transfer, and save or load settings for the FTP function.

• The wireless access point or wireless router that relays the LAN connection is referred to as the “access point” in the manual.

• Basic knowledge of FTP servers is required to use the FTP transfer function.

• The explanations in the manual are based on the assumption that your network or FTP server environment is ready to use. For information on how to prepare the network environment, check with the manufacturer of each device.

• For details on the camera’s operations, see the “Help Guide” for the camera.

• If your camera is lost or stolen, Sony bears no responsibility for the loss or damage caused by illegal access or use of the registered access point on the camera.

• The SONY ILME-FX2 can connect to an access point with WPA3-SAE or WPA2-PSK security settings or without security settings. To ensure a secure wireless LAN connection, we strongly recommend using an access point with WPA3 or WPA2 security settings.

• Connecting to an access point without security settings may result in hacking, access from malicious third parties, or attacks on vulnerabilities. Unless there is a specific reason, we do not recommend using an access point without security settings.

• It is important that you set the security settings when using a wireless LAN. If a security problem arises because no security precautions are in place or due to any inevitable circumstances when using a wireless LAN, Sony bears no responsibility for the loss or damage.

Configure the settings for connecting the camera to the network using a commercially available USB-LAN conversion adaptor. You will need the following:

• (A) SONY ILME-FX2 Camera

• (B) USB-LAN conversion adaptor (sold separately): Use a Type-C USB-LAN conversion adaptor. We recommend a gigabit ethernet adaptor.

• (C) LAN cable (sold separately): Use a Category 5e or higher Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cable with high shielding performance.

• (D) Router (sold separately)

Follow these steps:

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [Wired LAN] → Configure the connection settings via a wired LAN.

• LAN IP Address Setting: Selects whether to set the IP address of the wired LAN automatically or manually ([Auto]/[Manual]). If you set it to [Manual], enter the fixed address and information according to your network environment ([IP Address]/[Subnet Mask]/[Default Gateway]/[Primary DNS Server]/[Second DNS Server]).

• Display Wired LAN Info.: Displays wired LAN information for this camera such as the MAC address or IP address.

2. Go to MENU → (Network) → [USB-LAN/Tethering] → [USB-LAN Connection].

To connect the SONY ILME-FX2 to a wireless LAN, follow this step:

1. Select MENU → (Network) → [Wi-Fi] → [Wi-Fi Connect] → [On] to connect the camera to the Wi-Fi access point.

• The camera will search for connectable access points. If connectable access points are not found, use [WPS Push] or [Access Point Set.] to configure the settings.

Menu item details:

• WPS Push: If your access point has a Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS) button, press the button to register the access point to the camera.

• Access Point Set.: You can manually register the SSID name, security system, and password of the access point to the camera.

• Display Wi-Fi Info.: Displays information for the camera such as the MAC address, IP address, etc.

Note:

• For [Security], you can select [WPA3]/[WPA2]/[None]. For security, using the encrypted methods WPA3/WPA2 is recommended.

• When setting up an access point using [Access Point Set.], the character limits are as follows:

– SSID: The maximum length is 32 characters. You can use letters (uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and symbols.

– Password: The length must be between 8 and 64 characters. You can use letters (uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and symbols.

Connect the SONY ILME-FX2 and a smartphone with a USB cable, and connect the camera to a network using the Wi-Fi function of the smartphone or a mobile line.

Preparation

1. On the camera, go to MENU → (Network) → [USB-LAN/Tethering] → [Tethering Connection].

• The message “Completed preparations for connection. Connect the USB tethering device.” will appear on the monitor of the camera.

2. Connect the USB Type-C terminal on the camera to the smartphone with a USB cable.

• If a message confirming permission to connect is displayed on the smartphone, allow the connection with the camera.

To connect to a network

When using the Wi-Fi function of a smartphone (Android only)

Enable the Wi-Fi function on your smartphone, and then connect to the network. Wi-Fi setup on the camera is not required.

When using a mobile line

• iPhone: Enable the internet sharing function under Settings.

• Android: Enable USB tethering in the Network/Internet menu under Settings.

Note:

• Depending on the details of your contract with your communications carrier, tethering via a mobile line may not be possible, or you may unintentionally incur communication costs.

• For information on how to set up the smartphone, refer to the smartphone instruction manual.

You can register up to nine FTP servers on the SONY ILME-FX2. To register a server:

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Server Setting] → [Server 1] (or another server slot).

2. Select each setting item and then input the setting value for the server.

Menu item details:

• Display Name: Input a name for the FTP server (max 8 characters: letters, numbers, symbols).

• Destination Settings:

– Host Name: The host name or IP address of the server (max 255 characters: letters, numbers, and symbols `- .` only).

– Secure Protocol: Set whether to execute secure FTP transfers ([Off], [On: FTPES], [On: SFTP]).

– Root Certificate Error: Recommended to set to [Does Not Connect]. If a certificate error is displayed, update the root certificate.

– Port: The port number of the FTP server (max 5 numbers, 0 to 65535).

• Directory Settings:

– Specify Directory: Set the destination folder on the server (max 128 characters).

– Directory Hierarchy: Choose [Standard] to transfer to the specified directory, or [Same as in Camera] to replicate the memory card’s folder structure.

– Same File Name: Choose whether to overwrite files with the same name at the destination ([Does Not Overwrite] adds a number to the filename).

• User Info Settings: Input a [User] and [Password] to log on to the FTP server (max 64 characters).

• Passive Mode: Select whether to use passive mode ([On]/[Off (Active Mode)]). This is disabled for SFTP.

Note:

• It is recommended to set [Secure Protocol] to [On: FTPES] or [On: SFTP] to prevent data interception.

• When [Secure Protocol] is set to [On: SFTP], you cannot select [Root Certificate Error].

To select the server to be used for transfer, navigate to:

MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Server Setting] → desired server.

First, connect the camera to a network using a wired LAN, wireless LAN, or USB tethering.

Then, enable the FTP transfer function by navigating to:

MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [FTP Function] → [On].

If [Secure Protocol] is set to [On: SFTP], a fingerprint confirmation message will be displayed on the camera the first time you connect. Make sure the fingerprint matches that of the server before connecting.

• Once the connection has been established, the FTP (FTP connection) icon will appear in the recording standby screen or the playback screen.

• If connection fails, the FTP! (FTP connection error) icon will appear. To check the error, select MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Display FTP Error Info.] and check the displayed error details.

Batch Transfer: You can narrow down the transfer target, such as protected images or non-transferred images, and transfer the applicable images together as a batch. If two memory cards are inserted, the slot set in [Play Set of Multi. Media] will be the target.

Auto Transfer: You can automatically transfer images during shooting. Auto Transfer targets the slot set by the recording media setting.

One Image Transfer: You can transfer only the image being played back.

You can transfer images from the camera in the following formats:

• Still images: JPEG, HEIF, or RAW format

• Movies: XAVC HS, XAVC S, or XAVC S-I format

First, set MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [FTP Function] to [On] in advance.

1. MENU → (Playback) → [Playback Target] → [Play Set of Multi. Media] → desired slot. (This is not required if only one memory card is inserted).

2. MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [FTP Transfer].

3. Specify the FTP transfer target:

• Target Group: Select from [This Date]/[This Folder]/[This Media]/[All Media]/[All Filtered].

• Still Images/Movies: Select from [All]/[Only Still Images]/[Only Movies].

• Target Img (Rating): Select a star rating or [★OFF].

• Target Movie (Shot Mark): Select from [All] or [Only Shot Mark Mov.].

• Target Img (Protect): Select from [All] or [Only Protected Img.].

• Transfer Status: Select from [All]/[Only Non-transfer] or [Only Failed Transfer].

4. Select [OK] and press the center of the control wheel. You can select only certain images to transfer from the filtered images by pressing the Fn (Function) button (up to 100 files can be selected).

5. Select [OK] and press the center. Image transfer starts.

You can check the image transfer status on the playback screen by looking for these icons:

• FTP (transfer underway, normal): An icon indicating a standard FTP transfer is in progress.

• FTP (transfer underway, priority): An icon indicating a priority FTP transfer is in progress.

• FTP (transfer complete): An icon indicating the FTP transfer is complete.

• FTP (transfer failed): An icon indicating the FTP transfer has failed.

You can automatically transfer images to an FTP server while shooting. First, set MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [FTP Function] to [On].

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Auto FTP Transfer] → [On].

2. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Auto FTP Target].

3. Specify the target for automatic transfer:

• Still Image: You can select from [All] or [Protect Only].

• Movie: You can select from among [All], [Only Shot Mark], or [Protect Only].

When [Auto FTP Transfer] is set to [On], but a connection with the FTP server could not be established for some reason, the images to be transferred will be transferred automatically when the connection with the FTP server is recovered.

You can transfer a single image by assigning the function to a custom key. First, ensure MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [FTP Function] is set to [On].

1. Go to MENU → (Setup) → [Operation Customize] → [Custom Key Setting] → Set the [FTP Trans. (This Img.)] or [FTP Trans. (This Img.)] function to the desired key.

• FTP Trans. (This Img.) (with priority): Even if there are other images being transferred, the one image will be transferred with priority.

• FTP Trans. (This Img.): If there are other images being transferred, the one image will be transferred after the reserved transfers are completed.

2. Display the image to be transferred and press the custom key to which the function was assigned.

Note: You cannot transfer group view images or images not registered in the image database.

You can check the transfer results for still images or movies for a selected slot.

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Display FTP Result] → desired slot.

The transfer results will be displayed, showing:

• No. of Scs. Trn. Img.: Number of FTP transfer successful files.

• No. of Fail. Trn. Img.: Number of FTP transfer failed files.

To delete the transfer results, select [Reset] on the [Display FTP Result] screen. This will delete the entire transfer history of the selected slot.

You can select which file formats to transfer when images are recorded in RAW & JPEG or RAW & HEIF format.

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [RAW+J/H Transfer Target] → desired setting.

Menu item details:

• JPEG & HEIF: If images were shot in [RAW & JPEG], JPEG images are transferred. If shot in [RAW & HEIF], HEIF images are transferred.

• RAW: Transfers only RAW images to an FTP server.

• RAW+J & RAW+H: Transfers both RAW and JPEG images (or both RAW and HEIF images) to an FTP server.

When [Recording Media] is set to [Sort Recording] and JPEG/HEIF images of different sizes are recorded to each slot, you can select the size to transfer.

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Transfer JPEG Size] or [Transfer HEIF Size] → desired setting.

Menu item details:

• Large Size: Transfers large-sized JPEG/HEIF images.

• Small Size: Transfers small-sized JPEG/HEIF images.

Set whether to transfer the low-bit-rate proxy movies or the high-bit-rate original movies.

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Px Transfer Target] → desired setting.

Menu item details:

• Proxy Only: Transfers the proxy movies only.

• Original Only: Transfers the original movies only.

• Proxy & Original: Transfers both the proxy movies and the original movies.

Set whether to automatically protect still images or movies when transferring them to an FTP server.

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Protect Image in FTP transfer].

Menu item details:

• On: Automatically protects still images or movies stored on the camera when executing an FTP transfer.

• Off: Does not automatically protect still images or movies stored on the camera when executing an FTP transfer.

You can cut off the network connection when not executing an FTP transfer to avoid running down the battery.

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [FTP Power Save] → desired setting.

Menu item details:

• On: Connects to the network only during FTP transfer. When FTP transfer is not executed for a certain time, the network connection is automatically cut off.

• Off: Always connects to the network.

FTP Power Save mode is canceled and the network is re-established when the following operations are performed:

• The setting of the FTP server to be used is changed.

• The connection is switched between wired LAN and wireless LAN.

• The LAN connection setting is changed.

• Image transfer is executed using [FTP Transfer].

• [Auto FTP Transfer] is executed.

• [FTP Function] is set to [Off].

When executing FTP transfers with [Secure Protocol] set to [On: FTPES], a root certificate is needed to verify the server. To update the root certificate:

1. Save a root certificate to a memory card. Save the certificate to the root directory of the memory card in the PEM format, and name it “cacert.pem.”

2. Insert the memory card to which the root certificate has been saved into Slot 1 on the camera.

3. Go to MENU → (Network) → [Network Option] → [Import Root Certificate] → [FTP Function] → [OK].

The root certificate saved to the memory card is read by the camera, and then the root certificate on the camera is updated.

Note:

• Do not remove the memory card from the camera during read operations.

• When the network settings are reset, the root certificate on the camera is reset as well.

• The maximum size of a root certificate that can be loaded is 1 MB per certificate.

To reset all the network settings to default settings:

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [Network Option] → [Reset Network Set.] → [Enter].

You can save FTP settings to a memory card and load them to a camera. This is useful for connecting multiple cameras of the same model to an FTP server.

1. Go to MENU → (Network) → [FTP Transfer] → [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Save/Load FTP Settings] → desired item.

Menu item details:

• Load: Loads the settings for the FTP transfer function from a memory card to the camera. Select a setting file, enter the password, and select [OK] to restart the camera and apply settings.

• Save: Saves the current FTP settings to a memory card. Select [Save New], enter a file name, select [Save], set a [Password], and select [OK] to save the settings.

• Delete: Deletes the FTP settings saved on a memory card.

Note:

• You can save up to 10 settings per memory card. If 10 files are already saved, you must delete or overwrite existing settings.

• Only Slot 1 is used for saving or loading data.

• You cannot load settings from a camera of a different model, and settings from a camera with a different software version may fail to load.

• For security, it’s recommended to set a password of 16 to 32 alphanumeric characters/symbols when saving settings.

If your camera fails to acquire an IP address, the DHCP server may have frozen or is down. Try restarting the DHCP server.

• When using a wired LAN: Restart the DHCP server on the network. (Contact the network administrator.)

• When using Wi-Fi: Check that the DHCP server of the wireless LAN access point used is enabled, or restart the access point. (Contact the network administrator.)

If you see an error about creating a directory, check the following:

• Write Permission: Write permission may not be granted by the FTP server permissions settings. Change the FTP server settings. (Contact the FTP server administrator.)

• Invalid Characters: The specified folder name contains one or more characters that cannot be used by the OS which the FTP server is running. Check the FTP server settings registered in the camera, and change the characters entered to [Specify Directory] of [Directory Settings].

If you cannot connect to the FTP server, try these remedies:

• Confirm the details of the FTP server settings.

• The FTP server name (host name) registration may contain an error. Correct [Host Name] of [Destination Settings] in the FTP server settings of the camera.

• The FTP server has frozen or is down. Restart the FTP server. (Contact the FTP server administrator.)

If transfers fail, check the following:

• Full Disk: The FTP server disk is full. Delete the data stored in the FTP server. (Contact the FTP server administrator.)

• Permissions Changed: Write permission may not be granted for some reason, such as the FTP server permissions settings being changed during transfer operations. Change the FTP server settings. (Contact the FTP server administrator.)

If you have trouble acquiring an IP address and suspect a DNS issue, check these settings:

• The FTP server name (host name) registration contains an error. Correct [Host Name] of [Destination Settings] in the FTP server settings of the camera.

• When the IP address was set manually in the LAN connection settings of the camera, the DNS server IP address contained an error. Set [LAN IP Address Setting] to [Manual] on the camera, and then re-enter the IP address for the DNS server.

• When [LAN IP Address Setting] is set to [Auto] in the LAN connection settings of the camera, the DNS server information is not notified. Find the DHCP server on the network and correct the DNS server notification setting. (Contact the network administrator.)

• The DNS server has frozen or is down. Restart the DNS server on the network. (Contact the network administrator.)
