Before removing the battery cover, ensure the device is switched off. To turn the device off, press and hold the Power/End key until the power-off image displays, then tap Power off. Do not bend or twist the back cover excessively as this may damage it.

2. Place your fingernail in the opening and firmly “pop” the cover off the device.

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 SM-S975L supports an optional microSD memory card up to 64GB for storing media like music, pictures, and videos. Be sure to align the gold contact pins on the card with the device’s contact pins.

2. Locate the microSD card slot on the inside of the device.

3. Orient the card with the gold strips facing down.

4. Carefully slide the microSD card into the card socket until it clicks into place.

To install the battery:

1. Slide the battery into the compartment so that the tabs on the end align with the slots at the bottom of the phone, ensuring the connectors align.

2. Gently press down to secure the battery.

To remove the battery:

Grip the battery at the top end and lift it up and out of the battery compartment.

Position the battery cover over the battery compartment and press down until you hear a click. Do not apply pressure to the screen (“squeeze”) when replacing the cover, as this can damage the screen.

Your device is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Before using your device for the first time, you must fully charge the battery. Verify that the battery is installed before connecting the charger.

1. Connect the USB cable to the charging head.

2. Locate the Charger/Accessory jack on your device.

3. Insert the USB cable into the device’s Charger/Accessory jack.

4. Plug the charging head into a standard AC power outlet. The device will turn on with the screen locked and indicate its charge state and percentage.

5. When charging is finished, first unplug the charger’s power plug from the AC wall outlet, then disconnect the charger’s connector from the phone.

Warning: While the device is charging, if the touch screen does not function due to an unstable power supply, unplug the USB power adapter from the power outlet or unplug the USB cable from the device.

Active applications, light levels, Bluetooth usage, and GPS functionality all drain your battery. Here are some tips to conserve battery power:

• Reduce your backlight on time.

• Turn Bluetooth off when not in use.

• Turn Wi-Fi off when not in use.

• Deactivate GPS when not needed.

• Do not wait until your battery is completely depleted before charging. Repeated full discharge and recharge cycles can reduce the storage capacity of the battery over time.

• Use the Power Saving feature to deactivate some hardware and interface functions.

• Check the Battery use screen to review what features are consuming battery resources.

• Use the Task Manager to end background applications.

• Change animated Live Wallpapers to a non-animated wallpaper.

To turn the device on:

Press and hold the Power/End key until the device switches on. The device will search for your network.

To turn the device off:

1. Press and hold the Power/End key until the Device options screen appears.

2. Tap Power off and then tap OK.

By default, the device screen locks when the backlight turns off.

To unlock, place your finger on the screen and swipe the glass in any direction.

You can also configure more advanced lock settings to prevent unauthorized use of your device. For more information, refer to the “Security” section of your user manual.

It is important to always use a password to protect against unauthorized access. Voicemail setup may differ depending on your network.

1. From the Home screen, tap the Phone icon and then touch and hold the 1 key until the device dials voicemail. You may be prompted to enter a password.

2. Follow the tutorial to create a password, a greeting, and a display name.

To access Voice Mail using the menu:

1. From the Home screen, tap the Phone icon and then touch and hold the 1 key until the device dials voicemail.

2. When connected, follow the voice prompts from the voicemail center.

To access your voicemail from another phone:

1. Dial your wireless phone number.

2. When you hear your voicemail greeting, press the asterisk (*) key on the phone you are using.

3. Enter your passcode.

The front of your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 SM-S975L includes the following:

1. Indicator light: Illuminates with different colors and patterns for notifications like Charging (red), Low battery (red blinks), Fully Charged (green), and Missed Notification (blue blinks).

2. Light (RGB) Sensor: Adjusts screen brightness based on ambient light.

3. Menu key: Displays options for the current screen. Touch and hold to launch Google search.

Back View:

• microSD Card Slot (internal): Allows you to expand the memory.

• External speaker: For ringers, music, and other sounds.

• Flash: For taking photos in low-light conditions.

• Headset jack: To connect a hands-free headset.

• Camera lens: For taking photos.

• IR Transmitter: Emits infrared signals for controlling external devices with WatchON.

Side Views:

• Volume key: Adjusts ringer or in-call volume. Pressing down during an incoming call mutes the ring tone.

• Power/End key: Turns the phone on/off. Press and hold to toggle Silent mode, Airplane mode, or to Restart.

The Notification area at the top of the screen indicates new events like messages, calls, etc.

To View Notifications:

1. Touch the Status bar and drag it down to open the Notifications panel.

2. Tap a notification entry to open the associated application.

To Clear Notifications:

1. Touch and drag the Status bar down to open the Notifications panel.

2. Tap Clear. The notifications are cleared from the panel.

Your phone can have up to seven Home screens. You can add, delete, and rearrange them.

To delete a screen:

1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key and then tap Edit page.

2. Touch and hold the screen you want to delete, then drag it up to the Remove tab.

3. Press the Home key to return to the main Home screen.

To add a screen:

1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key and then tap Edit page.

2. Tap the plus icon (Add screen). The new screen appears as the last page.

3. Press the Home key to return to the main Home screen.

To rearrange screens:

1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key and then tap Edit page.

2. Touch and hold a screen and then drag it into its new location.

2. Tap the Home icon at the top of the screen you wish to set as the new Home screen. The icon will highlight to indicate it is now the Home screen.

To add a shortcut from the Applications screen:

1. From the Home screen, scroll to the screen where you want to place the shortcut.

2. Tap the Apps icon to view all your applications.

3. Scroll to find your desired application.

4. Touch and hold the application’s icon. The icon will appear hovering over the Home screen.

5. Position the icon on the screen and release it to lock it in place.

To delete a shortcut:

1. From the Home screen, touch and hold the desired shortcut.

2. Drag the shortcut over the Remove tab and release it.

To add a Widget:

1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon, then tap the Widgets tab.

2. Scroll across the Widget pages to locate the desired Widget.

3. Touch and hold the Widget until it detaches from the screen.

4. While still holding it, scroll to the desired screen and release the Widget to place it.

To remove a Widget:

1. Touch and hold a Widget until it unlocks from the current screen.

2. Drag the widget over the Remove tab and release it. This action does not delete the Widget, it only removes it from the screen.

You can change the wallpaper for your Home screen, Lock screen, or both.

To change the Home screen wallpaper:

1. Navigate to any Home screen panel.

2. Touch and hold an empty area of the screen.

3. From the window that appears, tap Set wallpaper, then Home screen.

4. Select a wallpaper type: Gallery, Live wallpapers, or Wallpapers.

5. Choose an image and tap Set wallpaper or Done.

To change the Lock screen wallpaper:

1. Touch and hold an empty area on any Home screen panel.

2. Tap Set wallpaper, then Lock screen.

3. Select a wallpaper type and choose your image, then tap Set wallpaper or Done.

By activating motion and gesture features, you can access time-saving functions. To learn how to properly control motions, tap Apps -> Settings -> My device tab -> Motions and gestures. Each entry has an on-screen tutorial.

To activate a gesture type (Air gesture, Motion, Palm motion):

1. From the main Settings page, tap My device tab -> Motions and gestures.

2. Touch and slide the slider for the desired gesture type (e.g., Air gesture) to the right to turn it on.

3. Read the on-screen notification and tap OK.

4. In a single motion, slide a specific feature’s activation slider to the on position. Note that at least one feature must be activated for the gesture type to be active.

The Multi Window feature allows you to run two applications on the screen at the same time.

To activate Multi Window:

1. Drag the Status bar down to open the Notifications panel.

2. Tap the Open Grid view icon, then tap the Multi window entry to activate it (the icon turns green).

To display the Multi Window tab:

Press and hold the Back key. The Multi window tab will appear on the side of the screen. Tap the tab to open the application panel.

To run two apps at once:

1. Open one application.

2. Open the Multi window panel.

3. Touch and hold the desired second app from the panel, then drag and drop it onto the top or bottom half of the screen.

To manage the split screen:

Tap the Border bar between the two apps to show icons for:

• Switch app location: Swaps the position of the two apps.

• Maximize the app: Makes the selected app full screen.

• Close the app: Closes the selected app and maximizes the other.

You can also drag the Border bar to resize the app windows.

To rearrange apps:

1. Activate Multi Window and open the Apps panel.

2. Touch and hold a desired app until it detaches from the panel, then drag it to a new location in the list.

To remove an app:

1. Open the Apps panel.

2. Tap the Edit button at the bottom of the list to reveal a staging area.

3. Drag apps from the panel to the staging area to remove them.

4. Tap Done when finished.

To restore an app:

1. Open the Apps panel and tap Edit.

2. Touch and hold an app from the staging area and drag it back into the list.
