The SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB A includes several special features to enhance your experience:

Meet Bixby: Bixby is a virtual assistant that helps you understand your settings and set up your Samsung device.

Face recognition: Configure facial recognition to add an extra layer of security for unlocking your device.

Media volume limiter: Limit the maximum volume output of the device.

Multi window: Multitask by using two applications at the same time on a split screen.

Direct Share: Share content directly with specific people.

microSD card tray

You can install an optional microSD memory card (not included) to add more memory space to your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB A. It is not necessary to install it before using the device.

1. Insert the removal tool into the hole on the memory card tray, and then push until the tray pops out. Be careful when using the removal tool.

2. Place the memory card on the tray with the gold contacts facing down.

3. Slide the memory card tray back into the slot.

Warning: Small components such as memory cards can pose a choking risk. Handle these cards carefully to avoid damaging them.

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB A is powered by a rechargeable battery. Use the included charger (charging head and USB Type-C cable) to charge the battery from a standard outlet.

1. Insert the USB Type-C cable into the USB charger/Accessory port on the device.

2. Connect the USB cable to the charging head, and then plug the charging head into a standard outlet.

3. Unplug the charging head from the outlet and remove the USB cable from the device when charging is complete.

Note: You should dry the inside of the charging port before inserting a power connector. If the port is not fully dry, your device may operate abnormally, such as charging more slowly or overheating. The battery comes partially charged, and you can use the device while it is charging.

Caution: Use only Samsung-approved charging devices and batteries to maximize battery life. Using other charging devices may void your warranty and cause damage.

To turn the device on:

Press and hold the Power key until the device turns on.

To turn the device off:

1. Press and hold the Power key.

2. Tap Power off, and confirm when prompted.

By default, your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB A locks automatically when the screen times out.

To lock the device:

Press the Power key.

To unlock the device:

Press the Power key, and then drag your finger across the screen.

The default screen lock on your device is Swipe. To choose a more secure screen lock like a Pattern, PIN, or Password, see the instructions for setting a secure screen lock.

Add a Google Account:

1. From Settings, tap Cloud and accounts > Accounts.

2. Tap Add account > Google.

Note: When you sign in to a Google account, Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is activated, which requires your Google account information when resetting to factory settings.

Add a Samsung Account:

1. From Settings, tap Cloud and accounts > Accounts.

2. Tap Add account > Samsung account.

Add an Email Account:

1. From Settings, tap Cloud and accounts > Accounts.

2. Tap Add account > Email.

Use Smart Switch to transfer contacts, photos, and other content from your old device to your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB A.

To use Smart Switch:

1. From Settings, tap Cloud and accounts > Smart Switch.

2. Follow the prompts and select the content to transfer.

The touchscreen on your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB A responds best to a light touch from the pad of your finger or a capacitive stylus.

Tap: Lightly tap an item to select or launch it. For example, tap the keyboard to enter text or tap an app shortcut to launch the app.

Double-tap: Lightly tap an item twice to select or launch it. For example, double-tap an image to zoom in or out.

Touch and hold: Touch and hold an item to activate it. This might display a pop-up menu of options.

Swipe: Lightly drag your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen. For example, swipe the screen to unlock it or scroll through Home screens.

Drag: Touch and hold an item, and then move it to a new location. For example, drag an app shortcut to a Home screen.

The Navigation bar, located at the bottom of the screen, displays navigation keys.

Full Screen Mode:

To enter or exit full screen mode, double-tap the Hide/Show icon to the left of the navigation keys. In full screen mode, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to display the Navigation bar.

Navigation Bar Settings:

You can configure the Navigation bar background color and button layout.

From Settings, tap Display > Navigation bar for the following settings:

Show and hide button: Add a button on the left side of the navigation bar to show or hide it.

Background color: Choose a color for the background of the Navigation bar.

Button layout: Choose the order of the navigation keys.

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB A has multiple Home screens for app shortcuts and widgets. You can add, remove, and change the order of screens.

1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen to open the management options.

2. Use these options to manage screens:

Align shortcuts: Tap ‘Align top’ or ‘Align bottom’ to align shortcuts into a line at the top or bottom of a screen.

Remove a Home screen: Tap ‘Remove’.

Set the main Home screen: Tap ‘Main’. This screen is displayed when you tap the Home button.

Change screen order: Touch and hold a screen, then drag it to a new position.

Add a screen: Swipe to the end of the screens, and then tap ‘Add’.

Enable Bixby Home: Swipe right, and then tap On/Off.

Add an App Shortcut:

1. From Apps, touch and hold an app shortcut to open the options menu.

2. Tap ‘Add to Home’.

Remove a Shortcut:

1. Touch and hold an app shortcut on the Home screen to open the options menu.

2. Tap ‘Remove from Home’. This does not delete the app.

Move a Shortcut:

1. Touch and hold an app shortcut to release it.

2. Drag the app shortcut to a new Home screen, and then release it.

Use Folders:

You can organize app shortcuts in folders on an Apps list screen and Home screen. To create a folder, touch and hold an app shortcut, then drag it on top of another shortcut.

Change Wallpapers:

1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen.

2. Tap Wallpapers to customize.

3. Tap an image to choose it.

4. Tap ‘Set as wallpaper’, and confirm when prompted.

Add a Widget:

1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen.

2. Tap Widgets.

3. Touch and hold a widget, drag it to a Home screen, and release it.

Remove a Widget:

1. From a Home screen, touch and hold a widget to open the options menu.

2. Tap ‘Remove from Home screen’.

1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen.

2. Tap ‘Home screen settings’ to customize:

Home screen layout: Set your device to have separate Home and Apps screens, or only a Home screen where all apps are located.

Apps button: Add an apps button to the Home screen for easy access to the Apps screen.

App icon badges: Select how to show icon badges when apps receive notifications.

Add apps to Home screen: Automatically add newly downloaded apps to the Home screen.

Quick-open notification panel: Enable this feature to open the Notification panel from the Home screen by swiping down.

Hide apps: Select apps to hide.

About Home screen: View version information.

The Status bar provides device information on the right side and notification alerts on the left.

You can access the Notification panel from any screen.

1. Drag the Status bar down to display the Notification panel.

2. Swipe down the list to see notification details.

To open an item, tap it.

To clear a single notification, drag it left or right.

To clear all notifications, tap Clear.

3. Drag upward from the bottom of the screen or tap the Back button to close the Notification panel.

Quick Settings:

The Notification panel also provides quick access to device functions.

1. Drag the Status bar down to display the Notification panel.

2. Drag ‘View all’ downward to expand Quick settings.

Tap a setting to turn it on or off.

Tap ‘More options’ to reorder Quick settings or change the button layout.

3. Drag ‘View all’ upward to close Quick settings.

Use face recognition as an alternative to entering passwords in certain apps and to unlock the screen.

Register a face:

To use your face to unlock your device, you must first set a pattern, PIN, or password.

1. From Settings, tap Biometrics and security > Face recognition.

2. Follow the prompts to register your face.

Customize Face Recognition:

From Settings, tap Biometrics and security > Face recognition for the following options:

Remove face data: Delete existing faces.

Face unlock: Enable or disable face recognition security.

Screen-on face recognition: Unlock your device with face recognition as soon as the screen turns on.

Faster recognition: Turn on for faster face recognition. Turn off to increase security and make it harder to unlock using an image or video of your likeness.

Multitask by using two apps at the same time in a split screen view.

1. From any screen, tap Recent apps.

2. Tap the Multi window icon in the title bar of an app to launch it in split screen view.

Recently opened apps that support Multi window are displayed in the lower window. If you want to launch a different app, tap App list.

3. Tap an app in the lower window to add it to the split screen view.

Window Controls:

Tap the middle of the window border for these options:

Add app pair on Home screen: Add the open pair of apps as a shortcut to the Home screen.

Switch windows: Swap the two windows.

Open in pop-up view: Open the selected app in a pop-up window.

Close app: Close the selected app.

Text can be entered using the Samsung keyboard or your voice.

Tap a field to display the Samsung keyboard. From the keyboard toolbar, you can access helpful functions:

Clipboard: Access the clipboard.

Emojis: Insert an emoji.

GIF keyboard: Add animated GIFs.

Handwriting: Use your handwriting to enter text.

Modes: Select a keyboard layout.

Settings: Access keyboard settings.

Stickers: Add illustrated stickers.

Voice input: Use Google Voice typing.

Use Google Voice Typing:

1. From the Samsung keyboard, tap Voice input.

2. Tap the screen and speak your text.

Access Apps:

From a Home screen, swipe up or down to access Apps. Tap an app’s shortcut to launch it.

Uninstall or Disable Apps:

From Apps, touch and hold an app to open the options menu. Tap Uninstall or Disable. Note: Some preloaded apps can only be disabled, not uninstalled. Disabled apps are turned off and hidden from view.

Sort Apps:

From Apps, tap More options > Sort. You can choose ‘Custom order’ to arrange apps manually or ‘Alphabetical order’ to sort alphabetically.

Create and Use Folders:

From Apps, touch and hold an app shortcut, then drag it on top of another app shortcut to create a folder. You can then name the folder, change its color, and add more apps.

Take Pictures:

1. From Apps, tap Camera.

2. Use the display screen as a viewfinder. Tap the screen to focus the shot. A brightness scale will appear; slide the light bulb to adjust brightness.

To switch between front and rear cameras, swipe the screen up or down.

To change a setting, tap Settings.

3. Tap the ‘Take a picture’ button.

Record Videos:

1. From Apps, tap Camera and aim at your subject.

2. Tap Record to begin recording.

To temporarily stop recording, tap Pause. To continue, tap Resume.

3. Tap Stop when you are finished recording.

Use the Alarm tab in the Clock app to set one-time or recurring alarms.

Set an Alarm:

1. From Apps, tap Clock > Add alarm.

2. Configure the alarm settings: Date, Time, Repeat, Alarm name, Snooze, Alarm sound, and Read time aloud.

3. Tap Save to save the alarm.

Turn off an Alarm:

When the alarm sounds, tap Dismiss or swipe Dismiss to the left or right. To postpone the alarm, tap Snooze.

Delete an Alarm:

1. From Apps, tap Clock, and find the alarm in the alarm list.

2. Touch and hold the alarm to select it, then tap Delete.

Add a Contact:

1. From Apps, tap Contacts > Create contact.

2. Tap contact fields to enter information, such as name, phone number, and email. You can assign a picture, choose a storage account, and add more fields.

3. Tap Save.

Edit a Contact:

1. From Apps, tap Contacts, then tap a contact to open it.

2. Tap Edit.

3. Tap any field to add, change, or delete information.

4. Tap Save.

Share a Contact:

1. From Apps, tap Contacts, then tap a contact.

2. Tap Share.

3. Choose either vCard file (VCF) or Text, then select a sharing method and follow the prompts.

Delete a Contact:

From Apps, tap Contacts, then touch and hold a contact to select it. You can tap other contacts to select them for deletion as well. Tap Delete, and confirm when prompted.

To capture an image of your screen, press and hold the Power and Volume down keys simultaneously. The screenshot will be automatically saved to a Screenshots album in the Gallery app.

Screenshot Options:

You can enable additional screenshot features. From Settings, tap Advanced features and toggle the following:

Smart capture: Capture an image of any scrollable areas of the screen that are currently hidden, as well as the area that is visible. You can also crop and share the screenshot immediately.

Palm swipe to capture: Capture an image of the screen by swiping the edge of your hand across it, from side to side, keeping in contact with the screen.

1. From Settings, tap Connections > Wi-Fi, and then tap the toggle to turn on Wi-Fi.

2. When Wi-Fi is turned on, your device automatically scans for available networks and displays them.

3. Tap the network you want to connect to.

If you select an open network, you are automatically connected. Otherwise, enter a password to connect.

To Manually Connect to a Hidden Wi-Fi Network:

1. In the Wi-Fi settings screen, tap ‘Add network’ at the bottom of the list.

2. Enter the Network name and select the Security option. Enter your password.

3. Configure advanced options if needed, then tap Connect.

1. From Settings, tap Connections > Bluetooth, and then tap the toggle to turn on Bluetooth.

2. Your device scans for discoverable Bluetooth devices. To scan again, tap Scan.

3. Tap a device from the list and follow the prompts to connect.

Once a pairing is created, the devices will continue to recognize each other without needing to re-enter a passcode.

To Unpair from a Bluetooth Device:

1. In the Bluetooth settings screen, tap the Settings icon next to the paired device.

2. Tap Unpair to delete the paired device.

Sound Mode:

From Settings, tap Sounds and vibration > Sound mode, and choose a mode:

Sound: Use the sounds, vibrations, and volume levels you have chosen.

Mute: Set your device to make no sounds. You can set a temporary mute for a specific time limit.

Volume:

From Settings, tap Sounds and vibration > Volume, and drag the sliders for notifications and other audio. You can also use the physical Volume keys on the side of the device.

Sound Quality and Effects:

From Settings, tap Sounds and vibration > Sound quality and effects to customize your audio experience with options like Dolby Atmos, Equalizer, and Adapt Sound.

Device maintenance allows you to view the status of your device’s battery, storage, and memory, and to automatically optimize system resources.

Quick Optimization:

This feature improves performance by identifying apps that use excessive battery, deleting unnecessary files, closing background apps, and scanning for malware.

1. From Settings, tap Device maintenance.

2. Tap Optimize now.

Manage Battery, Storage, and Memory:

Within the Device maintenance screen, you can tap on individual categories (Battery, Storage, Memory) to view detailed usage and access specific management tools, such as power saving modes, cleaning storage, and clearing memory.

You can reset device settings or perform a full factory data reset.

Reset Settings:

This resets your device to its factory default settings, but does not affect personal data, security, language, or account settings.

1. From Settings, tap General management > Reset > Reset settings.

2. Tap Reset settings, and confirm when prompted.

Factory Data Reset:

This action permanently erases ALL data from the device, including account settings, system and application data, downloaded apps, music, photos, and other files. Data on an external SD card is not affected.

1. Before resetting, ensure you have backed up any important information.

2. From Settings, tap General management > Reset > Factory data reset.

3. Tap Reset and follow the prompts to perform the reset.

Warning: If you have a Google Account on the device, Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is active. You will need to enter your Google Account username and password after the reset to use the device.

From Settings, tap Software update for the following options:

Download updates manually: Check for software updates.

Download updates automatically: Update software automatically.

Scheduled software updates: Install software updates at a time you set.

Last update information: View information about the last software update.

The location is usually in the “About device” or “About phone” section. For example:

Alternatively, you can use the Search feature in Settings to search for “Legal”.
