If your carrier prohibits the downloading of unauthorized software and you attempt to do so, you will be notified on the screen that unauthorized software has been detected. You should power down the SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 and contact your carrier to restore the device to the carrier-authorized settings.

To play purchased DivX VOD movies on your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4, the device must be registered. To obtain your registration code, locate the DivX VOD section in your device’s setup menu by following these steps:

1. Tap Apps > Settings > MORE tab > About device.

2. Tap Legal information > License settings > DivX® VOD > Register.

The front of your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 has several important features:

Back: Tap to return to the previous screen, or to close a dialog box, menu, or keyboard.

Earpiece: Listen to a call.

Front camera: Take self-portraits and record videos of yourself.

Home key: Tap to return to the Home screen.

Light sensor: Lets you use the ambient light level to adjust the screen brightness/contrast.

Menu: Displays a list of options available for the current screen.

Power/Lock key: Press and hold to turn the device on or off. Press to lock or wake up the screen. Press and hold to turn the device off or restart it, or for quick access to Airplane Mode.

Proximity and gesture sensors: Detects the presence of objects near the device.

Status light: Displays red when charging or the battery is low, blue when a notification has arrived or you are voice recording, and green when fully charged.

Volume key: Press to adjust the volume of your device’s sounds and audio.

The back and top of your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 have several important features:

Camera: Take pictures and record videos.

Flash: Illuminate subjects in low-light environments when taking a photo or recording video.

Headset jack: Connect an optional headset (not included).

Infrared transmitter: Controls external devices using infrared light.

Microphone: Records audio and detects voice commands.

Speaker: Plays music and other sounds.

USB charger / Accessory port: Connect the Charger/USB cable (included), and other optional accessories (not included).

Remove the Back Cover

1. Remove the back cover using the slot on the top left of your phone.

2. Lift the cover up and to the right of the phone.

Install the SIM Card

1. Carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card slot until the card locks into place.

2. Make sure that the card’s gold contacts face into the phone and that the upper-left angled corner of the card is positioned correctly.

Install the Battery

1. Insert the battery into the opening on the back of the phone, making sure the connectors align.

2. Gently press down to secure the battery.

Replace the Back Cover

1. Place the back cover onto the back of the phone and press down.

2. Press along the edge of the back cover until you have a secure seal.

You can install an optional microSD or microSDHC memory card in your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 to expand available memory space. A memory card can be installed at any time; it is not necessary to install it prior to using the device. For detailed steps, see the instructions on how to remove the back cover and replace it in the assembly instructions.

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion battery. A Wall/USB Charger is included for charging from any standard outlet. A fully discharged battery requires up to four hours of charge time. You can use the device while it is charging.

1. Insert the USB cable into the port on the phone.

2. Connect the USB cable to the charging head, and then plug the charging head into a standard outlet.

3. When charging is complete, unplug the charging head from the outlet and remove the USB cable from the device.

Turn the Device On

Press and hold the Power/Lock key until the device vibrates and starts up.

Turn the Device Off

1. Press and hold the Power/Lock key until the device vibrates and the Device options menu displays.

2. Tap Power off.

Lock the Device

By default, the device locks automatically when the screen times out. To lock the device manually, press the Power/Lock key.

Unlock the Device

The default Screen lock on your device is Swipe. To unlock your device, press the Power/Lock key or Home key, and then touch and drag your finger across the screen.

Google Account

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 uses a Google Account for features like Gmail, Google Hangouts, and the Google Play Store. You can set up an account when you first turn on the device, or at any time using the Accounts settings.

From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > ACCOUNTS tab > Add account > Google.

Samsung Account

A Samsung account provides access to Samsung content and apps. You can set one up during the initial device configuration or later.

From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > ACCOUNTS tab > Add account > Samsung account.

Set Up Your Voice Mail

1. From the Home screen, tap Phone, then tap Voicemail.

2. Follow the tutorial to create a password, record a greeting, and record your name.

Access Your Voice Mail from Your Device

1. From the Home screen, tap Phone, then tap Voicemail.

2. You may be prompted to enter a password.

3. When connected, follow the voice prompts from the voice mail center.

Access Your Voice Mail from Another Phone

1. Dial your wireless phone number.

2. When you hear your voicemail greeting, press the asterisk key on the phone you are using.

3. Enter your password and you are connected to your Voice Mail.

App shortcuts: Shortcuts to your favorite applications.

Apps screen: Allows quick access to all of your applications.

Home screen indicator: Indicates which Home screen is presently displayed.

Notification icons: Display new messages and emails, notifications, available software updates, and so on.

Status Bar: Displays device status icons (right) and notification icons (left).

Status icons: Display information about the device, such as the network signal strength, battery level, the time, and so on.

Widget: Self-contained application that runs on the Home screen (not a shortcut).

You can manage the multiple Home screens on your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 to add, remove, or reorder them.

1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen or tap Menu. Alternatively, touch and hold an empty space on the screen.

2. Use these options to manage screens:

Add a screen: Swipe to the end of the screens, and then tap Add.

Remove a screen: Touch and hold on a screen, and then drag it to Remove.

Set a screen as the main Home screen: Tap Main Home screen at the top of a screen. This screen displays when you press the Home key.

Change the order of screens: Touch and hold on a screen, and then drag to a new position.

Tap Home screen settings: Tap an option to customize, such as the transition effect when swiping between screens.

Add a Shortcut to a Home Screen

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps.

2. Touch and hold an app shortcut, drag it to a Home screen and release it.

Remove a Shortcut

1. Touch and hold a shortcut to release it.

2. Drag the icon to Remove and release it.

Add a Widget to a Home Screen

1. Touch and hold an empty space on the screen, and then tap Widgets.

2. Touch and hold a widget, drag it to a Home screen and release it.

Remove a Widget

1. From a Home screen, touch and hold a widget to release it.

2. Drag the widget to Remove and release it.

Add a Folder to a Home Screen

1. From a Home screen, touch and hold an app shortcut.

2. Drag the shortcut onto Create folder and release.

3. Enter a folder name.

4. Tap Add application to place additional apps in the folder.

5. Tap DONE.

Use Folders

1. Tap a folder to open it and access the shortcuts inside.

2. To add shortcuts to a folder, touch and hold the shortcut, and then drag it onto the folder and release.

3. Tap More options to change the folder’s color scheme.

4. To delete a folder, touch and hold the folder until it detaches, and then drag it to Remove and release.

You can change the look of the Home and Lock screens with a new wallpaper.

1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen, or touch and hold an empty space.

2. Tap Wallpapers, and then choose Home screen, Lock screen, or Home and lock screen.

3. Tap a wallpaper to see a sample, and then tap SET AS WALLPAPER.

The Status Bar on your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 displays various icons to provide information about your device’s status and notifications.

You can use a variety of gestures to navigate your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4:

Tap: Lightly tap items to select or launch them, such as tapping the onscreen keyboard to enter text or tapping an app icon to launch it.

Touch and Hold: Activate onscreen items with a touch and hold gesture, like holding a widget to move it or holding a text field to display a pop-up menu.

Swipe or Slide: Lightly drag your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen to unlock the device or scroll through menus and Home screens.

Drag: Touch and hold an item, then move it to a new location, such as dragging an app shortcut to the Home screen.

Pinch and Spread: Use your thumb and forefinger to pinch or spread the screen to zoom in or out when viewing a picture or a web page.

The Notification Panel provides quick access to notifications, calendar events, device status, and more.

1. Swipe down on the Status Bar to display the Notification Panel.

2. Scroll down the list to see notification details.

– Tap an item to open it.

– To clear a single notification, drag it left or right. Tap CLEAR to clear all notifications.

3. To close the Notification Panel, swipe upward from the bottom of the screen or tap the Back key.

The panel also contains Quick Settings for functions like Wi-Fi. To view additional Quick settings, swipe left or right across the visible icons or tap “View all”.

Multi Window allows you to multi-task by using multiple applications at the same time.

Activate Multi Window

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab > Display.

2. Tap Multi window to activate it. You can also activate it from the Notification Panel.

Use Multi Window

1. Touch and hold the Back key to display the Multi Window tray.

2. Drag apps from the tray onto the main screen to use multiple apps at once.

Window Controls

Tap the control button in the middle of the window to access these controls:

Switch windows: Switch the positions of the two applications.

Move content: Share items by dragging them between windows (if supported).

Expand: Open the selected window in full screen view.

Close application: Close the selected app.

Customize the Multi Window Tray

1. Touch and hold the Back key to display the tray.

2. Tap Tray Controls > Edit to add, remove, or relocate apps in the tray.

You can type text using the QWERTY Samsung Keyboard. Touch and hold the Options key (microphone icon) to access special functions:

To customize the Samsung Keyboard:

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab > Language and input.

2. Tap Samsung keyboard for options such as Predictive text.

Instead of typing, you can speak your text input using Google Voice Typing.

Enable Google Voice Typing:

1. On the Samsung Keyboard, tap the Google Voice Typing icon. You may need to touch and hold the Options key (left of the Space key) to find it.

2. Speak your text.

Configure Google Voice Typing:

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab > Language and input.

2. Tap Google voice typing for options.

Make a Call

1. From a Home screen, tap Phone.

2. Enter a number and tap Dial.

Quickly Dial from Contacts

While viewing your contact list, swipe your finger across a contact to the right to call them.

Answer or Reject a Call

When a call comes in, touch and drag the Answer icon in any direction to answer, or touch and drag the Reject icon in any direction to reject the call and send it to voicemail.

End a Call

When you are ready to end your call, tap End call.

Adjust Call Volume: Press the Volume Key up or down. For a quick boost, tap Extra volume on the screen.

Speaker or Bluetooth: Tap Speaker to use the speakerphone, or tap Bluetooth to use a connected Bluetooth headset.

Personalize Call Sound: Tap Personalize call sound to adjust the audio with an equalizer.

Place a New Call (Add Call):

1. From the active call, tap Add call.

2. Dial the new number and tap Dial.

3. When the new call is answered, you can tap Swap to switch between calls or tap Merge for a conference call.

Call Waiting: If another call comes in while you are on a call:

1. Slide the Answer icon to answer the new call.

2. You can choose to put the first caller on hold or end the first call to answer the new one.

To create a Speed Dial:

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts.

2. Tap Menu > Speed dial.

3. Tap an unused number (1 is for voicemail).

4. Tap a contact to assign to that number.

To make a call using Speed Dial:

1. From a Home screen, tap Phone.

2. Tap the Keypad tab.

3. Touch and hold the speed dial number. If the number is more than one digit, enter the first digits, then hold the last digit.

To remove a Speed Dial assignment:

1. Go to Apps > Contacts.

2. Tap Menu > Speed dial.

3. Find the contact and tap Remove.

Make an Emergency Call without a SIM Card

1. From the Lock screen, tap Emergency call and drag upward.

2. Tap EMERGENCY CALL to display the Emergency dialer.

3. Enter 911 and tap Dial.

Make an Emergency Call with a SIM Card

1. From a Home screen, tap Phone.

2. Enter the emergency number (e.g., 911), then tap Dial.

Uninstall or Disable Apps

You can uninstall apps you have downloaded. Preloaded apps cannot be uninstalled but can often be disabled.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps.

2. Tap Menu > Uninstall/disable apps.

3. Tap the Uninstall/Disable icon on the app you wish to remove and follow the prompts.

Organize Your Apps

You can change the order in which apps are listed.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps.

2. Tap Menu > View as.

3. Choose an option: Custom (touch, hold, and drag to arrange) or Alphabetical order.

Take Pictures

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Camera.

2. Use the display screen as a viewfinder to compose your shot. You can pinch or spread two fingers to zoom in or out, and tap the screen to focus on a specific area.

3. Before taking the photo, you can tap onscreen icons to access various camera options and settings.

4. Tap Capture to take the picture.

Shooting Modes

Tap MODE to select from various options like Auto, Beauty face, Best photo, Panorama, and Night mode to enhance your photos.

Dual Camera Mode

Tap the Dual Camera icon to take pictures and record videos using the front and rear cameras at the same time.

Camera Settings

Tap the Settings icon to configure options like Photo size, Burst shot, Face detection, ISO, Anti-shake, and more.

Create an Alarm

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Clock.

2. Tap Create alarm to configure the alarm settings:

– Time: Set a time for the alarm.

– Days: Choose the days to use this alarm.

– Alarm type: Choose sound, vibration, or both.

– Alarm tone: Choose a sound to play.

– Volume: Drag the slider to set the volume.

– Snooze: Allow snoozing and set the interval/repeats.

– Smart alarm: Enable a gentle, gradually increasing alarm tone before the set time.

– Name: Enter a name for the alarm.

3. Tap DONE.

Delete an Alarm

1. From the Clock app, touch and hold an alarm.

2. Tap Delete.

Add a Contact

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts.

2. Tap Create contact and enter information into the fields.

3. You can choose a storage location (device, SIM, or a synced account), assign a photo, add multiple fields, and set a custom ringtone.

4. Tap SAVE.

Edit a Contact

1. In the Contacts app, tap a contact to display it.

2. Tap Edit.

3. Tap any of the fields to add, change, or delete information.

4. Tap SAVE.

Delete Contacts

1. In the Contacts app, touch and hold a contact to select it, then tap Delete.

2. To delete multiple contacts, tap Menu, tap Delete, select the desired contacts, and tap DONE.

Create a Group

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts.

2. Tap the Groups tab, then tap Create group.

3. Enter a group name, choose a ringtone, and select other options.

4. Tap Add member to select contacts for the group, then tap DONE.

5. Tap SAVE.

Send a Message or an Email to a Group

1. In the Contacts app, go to the Groups tab and tap a group.

2. Tap Menu > Send message or email.

3. Select the contacts you wish to include and tap DONE.

4. Choose an account and follow the prompts.

View Images and Videos

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Gallery.

2. Tap an album to open it.

3. Tap an image or video to view it in full screen mode. Scroll left or right to view other items.

Edit Images

While viewing an image, tap Menu for options:

Edit: Use basic tools to edit your picture.

Favorite/Unfavorite: Mark the photo or video as a favorite.

Slideshow: Start a slideshow of the images and videos in the current folder.

Details: View information about the picture or video.

Set as: Set the image as a wallpaper or a contact’s photo.

Delete Images and Videos

When viewing a single image or video, tap Delete. To delete multiple items, tap Menu > Select item from within a folder, select the files, and then tap Delete.

NFC (Near Field Communication) allows data exchange when you touch your device with another compatible device.

Activate NFC

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > CONNECTIONS tab > NFC.

2. Tap the ON/OFF switch to turn NFC on.

Use S Beam

S Beam uses NFC to quickly share files like images, videos, and music.

1. Go to Apps > Settings > CONNECTIONS tab.

2. Tap S Beam.

3. Tap the ON/OFF switch to turn S Beam on.

4. Touch the back of your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 with another NFC-capable device and the content will be transferred.

You can share your phone’s mobile data connection with other devices by using it as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot.

Turn Wi-Fi Hotspot On or Off

1. From a Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > CONNECTIONS tab > More networks > Tethering and Mobile hotspot > Mobile Hotspot.

2. Tap the ON/OFF switch to turn Mobile Hotspot on or off.

Configure Mobile Hotspot Settings

1. With the hotspot enabled, tap Menu > Configure.

2. You can change the Network SSID (name), set the security level (e.g., WPA2 PSK), and change the password.

Connect a Device to Your Hotspot

1. Turn on the Mobile Hotspot on your SAMSUNG GALAXY S4.

2. On the other device, turn on Wi-Fi and scan for available networks.

3. Select your hotspot’s network name from the list.

4. Enter the hotspot password to connect.

You can choose from several methods for unlocking your screen, each with a different level of security.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab.

2. Tap Lock screen.

3. Tap Screen lock to select a screen lock type:

Swipe: Swipe the screen to unlock. This option provides no security.

Pattern: Create a pattern by connecting dots to unlock your device. This offers medium security.

PIN: Select a numeric PIN for unlocking the screen. This provides medium to high security.

Password: Create an alphanumeric password for unlocking the screen. This provides high security.

None: Do not use a lock screen.

To configure sounds and vibrations, go to Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab > Sounds and notifications.

Adjust the Volume: Drag the sliders to set the default volume for Ringtone, Media, Notifications, and System.

Sound Mode: Tap Sound mode and choose from:

Sound: Uses the sounds and vibrations you have chosen.

Vibrate: The device only vibrates for notifications and alerts.

Mute: The device plays no sounds or vibrations.

Ringtones: Tap Ringtones to choose a preset ringtone or tap ADD to use your own audio file.

Vibrations: Tap Vibrations to choose from preset vibration patterns or tap CREATE to make a new one.

Other Sounds: Tap Other sounds to enable or disable sounds for screen locks, dialing keypad, touch sounds, and more.

Easy Mode provides a simpler screen layout with larger text and icons, making for a more straightforward visual experience.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab.

2. Tap Easy mode to enable this feature.

3. When Easy mode is enabled, you can scroll down the page and select which apps you want to appear on the Home screens by tapping the checkbox next to them.

4. When finished, tap DONE.

Auto Reject Calls

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab > Call > Call rejection.

2. Tap Auto reject mode and choose an option: Off, All incoming calls, or Auto reject numbers.

3. If you chose Auto reject numbers, tap Auto reject list. Tap Add to manually add numbers, or tap Unknown to automatically reject calls from unknown numbers.

Manage Rejection Messages

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab > Call.

2. Tap Rejection messages.

3. Tap Add to create a new rejection message, or tap one of the pre-written messages to edit it.

4. Tap SAVE to save the message.

When enabled, Hands-Free mode will read incoming calls and new notifications aloud.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab > Hands-free mode.

2. Tap the ON/OFF switch to turn the feature on and configure these options:

Incoming call: Read out callers’ information when receiving incoming calls.

Air call-accept: Wave your hand over the screen to accept incoming calls.

Messages: Read out senders’ information when receiving incoming calls.

Alarm: Read out alarm information when alarms sound.

Calendar event info: Read out scheduled alarm information when alarms sound.

Power Saving Mode helps conserve battery power by adjusting screen brightness, limiting CPU performance, and other activities.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab.

2. Tap Power saving mode.

3. Tap the ON/OFF switch to turn the feature on.

4. Tap the following options to select them and conserve power:

CPU performance: Limit the maximum performance of the CPU.

Screen output: Lower the screen power level.

Turn off haptic feedback: Turn off vibration when you tap or touch the screen.

For even greater power savings, use Ultra power saving mode, which applies a gray scale theme and limits the number of usable apps.

Smart Screen features make the screen more responsive and easier to use.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MY DEVICE tab.

2. Tap Smart screen.

The following options display:

Smart stay: Disables the screen timeout if your phone detects that your face is watching the screen. Tap to enable.

Smart rotation: Disables the auto screen rotation by checking the orientation of your face and the device. Tap to enable.

Smart pause: Pauses videos when your device detects that your head has moved away from the screen. Tap to enable.

Backup and Restore to Google Servers

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > ACCOUNTS tab.

2. Tap Backup and reset for options:

Back up my data: Enable back up of application data, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings to Google servers.

Backup account: Select a Google account to be used as your backup account.

Automatic restore: Enable automatic restoration of settings from Google servers when you reinstall an application.

Factory Data Reset

This action permanently erases ALL data from the device.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > ACCOUNTS tab.

2. Tap Backup and reset > Factory data reset.

3. Tap RESET DEVICE and follow the prompts to perform the reset.

You can manage downloaded and preloaded applications using the Application manager.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > MORE tab > Application manager.

2. Swipe across the screen to view tabs for DOWNLOADED, SD CARD, RUNNING, or ALL applications.

3. Tap an application to view and update information, including memory usage, default settings, and permissions. The following options are available:

FORCE STOP: Stop an app that is misbehaving.

INSTALL/UNINSTALL UPDATES: Delete the application or uninstall its updates.

DISABLE: Disable apps that cannot be uninstalled.

MOVE TO SD CARD: Move this app to your microSD card.

CLEAR DATA: Clear application data from memory.

CLEAR CACHE: Clear an application’s temporary memory storage.

PERMISSIONS: View information about the application’s access to your device and data.

To manage your optional memory card, go to Apps > Settings > MORE tab > Storage.

Mount a Memory Card

If you unmounted the card without removing it, you will need to mount it again to access it. Tap Storage > Mount SD card.

Unmount a Memory Card

To prevent data damage, always unmount the card before removing it. Tap Storage > Unmount SD card.

Format a Memory Card

Formatting an SD card deletes all the data stored on it. Be sure to back up your files first. Tap Storage > Format SD card and follow the prompts.
