How does the OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214 calculate body composition?

The OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214 measures the body fat percentage by the Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) method. Muscles and blood vessels are body tissues with a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The HBF-214 sends an extremely weak electrical current of 50 kHz and less than 500 µA through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. This weak electrical current is not felt while operating the HBF-214.

In order for the scale to determine body composition, it uses the electrical impedance, along with your height, weight, age and gender information to generate results based on OMRON’s body composition data.

When is the recommended time to take a measurement with the OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214?

Understanding the normal changes in your body fat percentage can help you in preventing or reducing obesity. Being aware of the times when the body fat percentages shift in your own daily schedule will assist you in obtaining an accurate trending of your body fat. It is recommended to use this unit in the same environment and daily circumstances.

Recommended times are:

After waking up

Before breakfast: About 2 hours or more after waking up.

Afternoon: About 2 hours or more after lunch.

Evening: About 2 hours or more after dinner or a bath. Before going to bed and about 2 hours or more after eating or taking a bath.

Under what conditions should I avoid taking measurements with the OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214?

If measurement is taken under the following physical conditions, the estimated body fat percentage may differ significantly from the actual one because the water content in the body is changing.

Avoid taking measurements:

Please wait for 2 hours or more

• after vigorous exercise

• after taking a bath or sauna

• after drinking alcohol

• after drinking a lot of water

• after eating a meal

What is BMI (Body Mass Index) on the OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214?

BMI uses the following simple formula to indicate the ratio between weight and height of a person.

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m) / height (m)

The OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214 calculates your BMI classification using the height information stored in your Personal Profile Number or when entered in Guest Mode.

What is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage refers to the amount of body fat mass in regard to the total body weight expressed as a percentage.

Body fat percentage (%) = {Body fat mass (kg) / Body weight (kg)} × 100

This unit uses the BI method to estimate the body fat percentage.

Depending on where fat is distributed in the body, it is classified as visceral fat or subcutaneous fat.

What is Visceral Fat Level?

Visceral fat is the fat surrounding internal organs. Too much visceral fat is thought to be closely linked to increased levels of fat in the bloodstream, which can lead to common diseases such as hyperlipidemia and diabetes, which impairs the ability of insulin to transfer energy from the bloodstream and using it in cells. In order to prevent or improve conditions of common diseases, it is important to try and reduce visceral fat levels to an acceptable level. People with high visceral fat levels tend to have large stomachs. However, this is not always the case and high visceral fat levels can lead to metabolic obesity. Metabolic obesity (visceral obesity with normal weight) represents fat levels that are higher than average, even if a person’s weight is at or below the standard for their height.

What is Subcutaneous Fat?

Subcutaneous fat is fat below the skin. Subcutaneous fat not only accumulates around the stomach but also around the upper arms, hips and thighs, and can cause a distortion of the body’s proportions. Although not directly linked to increased risk of disease, it is thought to increase pressure on the heart and other complications. Subcutaneous fat is not displayed in this unit, but is included in the body fat percentage.

What is Skeletal Muscle?

Muscle is divided into two types, muscle in internal organs, such as the heart, and skeletal muscle attached to bones that is used to move the body. Skeletal muscle can be increased through exercise and other activity. Increasing the ratio of skeletal muscle means that body can burn energy more easily, which means that it is less likely to turn to fat, and makes it easier to lead an energetic lifestyle.

What is Resting Metabolism?

Regardless of your activity level, a minimum level of caloric intake is required to sustain the body’s everyday functions. Known as the resting metabolism, this indicates how many calories you need to intake to provide enough energy for your body’s functioning organs.

What is Body Age?

Body age is based on your resting metabolism. Body age is calculated by using your weight, body fat percentage and skeletal muscle percentage to produce a guide to judge whether your body age is above or below your actual age. To know your body age is useful to improve your health condition.

Why might the calculated results on my OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214 differ from my actual body fat percentage?

The body fat percentage measured by this unit may differ significantly from the actual body fat percentage in the following cases:

• Elderly people / People with a fever / Body builders or professional athletes / Patients undergoing dialysis / Patients with osteoporosis who have very low bone density / Pregnant women / People with swelling / Children in the growth stage.

These differences may be related to the changing rate of body fluid and/or body composition.

Why is the weight value displayed on my OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214 abnormally high or low?

This could be due to an incorrect measurement posture, or measuring on a soft surface like a carpet or an uneven floor. Please measure with a correct posture on a hard and flat floor.

Why are the body composition values displayed on my OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214 abnormally high or low?

The measurement posture is incorrect, which prevents the measurement. Please measure with a correct posture. Also, ensure you are measuring on a hard and flat floor, not a soft or uneven surface.

Why do the body composition measurement values on my OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214 vary significantly each time?

This can happen if the soles of your feet or your body are cold, leading to poor blood circulation. Try to restore normal blood circulation by warming yourself before taking a measurement.

Why are some measurement results shown as dashes (—-) on my OMRON KARADA SCAN HBF-214?

This can occur for several reasons:

• The electrodes are cold. Wait for a while in a warm room until the electrodes are warm, then measure again.

• The soles of your feet are too dry. Slightly moisten the soles of your feet with a wet towel and try again.

• The unit cannot measure body composition beyond the measurable range, even if age, gender, and height are set correctly. Check the settings of your personal data and change them if necessary, then take a measurement again.

• You are measuring without setting a Personal Profile Number or using Guest Mode. Enter personal data for a Personal Profile Number or use Guest Mode.
