Before you switch on your NEFF K46, please read the operating and installation instructions carefully. They contain important information on how to install, use, and maintain the appliance. Retain all documents for subsequent use or for the next owner.

The NEFF K46 contains a small quantity of environmentally-friendly but flammable R600a refrigerant. If the tubing of the refrigerant circuit is damaged during transportation or installation, leaking refrigerant may cause eye injuries or ignite. If damage has occurred, follow these steps:

■ Keep naked flames and/or ignition sources away from the appliance.

■ Thoroughly ventilate the room for several minutes.

■ Switch off the appliance and pull out the mains plug.

■ Inform customer service.

■ Never use electrical appliances inside the NEFF K46 (e.g., heater, electric ice maker, etc.). Risk of explosion!

■ Never use a steam cleaner to defrost or clean the appliance. The steam may penetrate electrical parts and cause a short-circuit. Risk of electric shock!

■ Do not use pointed or sharp-edged implements to remove frost or layers of ice. You could damage the refrigerant tubing.

■ Do not store products which contain flammable propellants (e.g., spray cans) or explosive substances in the appliance. Risk of explosion!

■ Do not stand on or lean heavily against the base of the appliance, drawers, or doors.

■ Before defrosting and cleaning, pull out the mains plug or switch off the fuse. Do not pull out the mains plug by tugging the cable.

■ Bottles with a high percentage of alcohol must be sealed and stored upright.

■ Keep plastic parts and the door seal free of oil and grease to prevent them from becoming porous.

■ Never cover or block the ventilation openings for the appliance.

■ People (including children) with limited physical, sensory, or mental abilities must not use this appliance unless supervised or given meticulous instructions.

■ Do not store bottled or canned drinks (especially carbonated drinks) in the freezer compartment as they may explode.

■ Never put frozen food straight from the freezer into your mouth to avoid low-temperature burns.

■ Avoid prolonged touching of frozen food, ice, or the evaporator pipes to prevent low-temperature burns.

■ Keep children away from packaging and its parts to avoid danger of suffocation from folding cartons and plastic film.

■ Do not allow children to play with the appliance.

■ If the appliance features a lock, keep the key out of the reach of children.

Old appliances are not worthless rubbish. To dispose of a redundant NEFF K46 safely:

1. Pull out the mains plug.

2. Cut off the power cord and discard it with the mains plug.

3. Do not take out the trays and receptacles; this prevents children from climbing in.

4. Do not allow children to play with the appliance once it has spent its useful life. Danger of suffocation!

Refrigerators contain refrigerant and gases in the insulation which must be disposed of professionally. Ensure that the tubing of the refrigerant circuit is not damaged prior to proper disposal.

The NEFF K46 is designed for a specific climate class, which can be found on the rating plate. The appliance can be operated at the following temperatures depending on its class:

Note: The appliance is fully functional within the room temperature limits of the indicated climatic class. If an appliance of climatic class SN is operated at colder room temperatures, the appliance will not be damaged up to a temperature of +5 °C.

Install the NEFF K46 in a dry, well-ventilated room. The location should not be exposed to direct sunlight or be near a heat source like a cooker or radiator. If installation next to a heat source is unavoidable, use a suitable insulating plate or observe the following minimum distances:

■ 3 cm to electric or gas cookers.

■ 30 cm to an oil or coal-fired cooker.

Also, ensure the ventilation openings on the rear panel of the appliance are never covered or blocked, as this increases power consumption.

After installing the appliance, wait at least 1 hour before switching it on. Before the first use, clean the interior.

The socket must be near the appliance and freely accessible. The appliance complies with protection class I. Connect it to a 220-240 V/50 Hz alternating current via a correctly installed socket with a protective conductor. The socket must be fused with a 10 to 16 A fuse.

Warning: Never connect the appliance to electronic energy saver plugs. The appliance can be used with mains and sine-controlled inverters.

The NEFF K46 includes the following parts:

A – Freezer section

B – Refrigerator compartment

1-4 – Controls/light

5 – Light switch

6 – Glass shelf in the refrigerator compartment

7 – Vegetable container

8 – Shelf for tubes and small tins

9 – Egg rack

10 – Shelf for large bottles

The controls have the following functions:

1. Main On/Off switch: Switches the whole appliance on and off.

2. “super” button: Switches on super cooling (refrigerator) and super freezing (freezer).

3. Temperature display refrigerator compartment: Shows the set temperature in °C.

4. Refrigerator compartment temperature selection button: Sets the temperature in the refrigerator compartment.

Switching the appliance on:

Switch on the appliance with the main On/Off switch (1). The temperature display (3) will flash until the set temperature is reached. The appliance starts to cool and the light switches on when the door is open. It may take several hours to reach the set temperature, so do not put any food in beforehand.

Setting the refrigerator compartment temperature:

The temperature can be set from +2 °C to +8 °C. Keep pressing the temperature setting button (4) until the desired temperature is set. The value last selected is saved. A factory setting of +4 °C is recommended. Perishable food should not be stored above +4 °C.

Freezer compartment temperature:

The temperature in the freezer compartment depends on the temperature set in the refrigerator compartment.

The air circulation in the refrigerator compartment creates different chill zones:

■ The coldest zone is between the arrow stamped on the side and the glass shelf situated below. Store perishable food like fish, sausage, and meat in this zone.

■ The warmest zone is at the very top of the door. Store items like cheese and butter here. When served, the cheese will not have lost its flavour and the butter will be easy to spread.

Super cooling sets the refrigerator to the coldest temperature setting for approximately 2 days, after which it automatically switches back to the previously set temperature. Use super cooling mode in situations such as:

■ Before placing large quantities of food in the refrigerator compartment.

■ For the fast cooling of drinks.

To switch it on or off, press the “super” button (2). The button is lit when super cooling is switched on.

The freezer compartment is for:

■ Storing deep-frozen food.

■ Making ice cubes.

■ Freezing small quantities of food.

Ensure the freezer compartment door is closed properly. If the door is open, frozen food will thaw, and the compartment will become covered in thick ice, leading to high power consumption. The door engages audibly. Some models have a “close” display to indicate if the door is properly shut (white display = closed, red display = open).

Freeze only fresh and undamaged food. To retain the best nutritional value, flavour, and colour, vegetables should be blanced before freezing (except for aubergines, peppers, zucchini, and asparagus).

Foods suitable for freezing:

Cakes and pastries, fish and seafood, meat, game, poultry, vegetables, fruit, herbs, eggs without shells, dairy products (cheese, butter, quark), ready meals, and leftovers.

Foods not suitable for freezing:

Vegetables usually consumed raw (lettuce, radishes), eggs in shells, grapes, whole apples, pears, peaches, hard-boiled eggs, yoghurt, soured milk, sour cream, crème fraîche, and mayonnaise.

Packing frozen food:

To prevent food from losing flavour or drying out, place it in airtight containers.

1. Place food in packaging.

2. Remove air.

3. Seal the wrapping.

4. Label packaging with contents and date of freezing.

Suitable packaging includes plastic film, tubular film made of polyethylene, aluminium foil, and freezer containers. Unsuitable packaging includes wrapping paper, greaseproof paper, cellophane, bin liners, and used shopping bags.

At a temperature of -18 °C, the storage duration depends on the type of food:

■ Fish, sausage, ready meals and cakes and pastries: up to 6 months

■ Cheese, poultry and meat: up to 8 months

■ Vegetables and fruit: up to 12 months

Food should be frozen solid as quickly as possible to retain vitamins, nutritional value, appearance, and flavour. Several hours before placing fresh food in the freezer compartment, switch on super freezing to prevent an unwanted temperature rise.

If the maximum freezing capacity is to be used, super freezing must be switched on 24 hours before the fresh produce is placed in the freezer. Set the refrigerator temperature to 2 °C. Smaller quantities of food can be frozen without super freezing.

To switch on/off, press the “super” button (2). If super freezing has been switched on, the button is lit. The function automatically switches off after approximately 2 days.

Depending on the type and application, select one of the following options:

■ at room temperature

■ in the refrigerator

■ in an electric oven, with/without fan assisted hot-air

■ in the microwave

Caution: Do not refreeze thawing or thawed food. Only ready meals (boiled or fried) may be refrozen. No longer store the frozen produce for the maximum storage period.

You can reposition the shelves inside the appliance and the door shelves as required:

■ Shelves: Pull the shelf forwards, lower it, and swing it out to the side.

■ Door shelves: Raise the door shelf and remove it.

■ Vario shelf (not all models): To store tall items, the front part of the Vario shelf can be taken out and pushed under the rear part.

■ Drawer for sausage and cheese: The drawer can be removed for adding and removing food. Lift the drawer and pull out. The drawer holder can be adjusted.

■ Bottle shelf: Bottles can be stored securely on the bottle shelf. The holder can be adjusted.

■ Bottle holder: Prevents bottles from falling over when the door is opened and closed.

■ For long-term storage of vegetables, salads, and fruit, slide the regulator all the way to the right. This opens the ventilation opening and the temperature drops.

■ For short-term storage, slide the regulator to the left. This closes the ventilation opening, creating high air humidity, and the temperature rises.

1. Fill the ice cube tray 3/4 full of water and place it in the freezer compartment.

2. If the ice tray is stuck to the freezer compartment, loosen it with a blunt implement only (e.g., a spoon handle).

3. To loosen the ice cubes, twist the ice tray slightly or hold it briefly under flowing water.

Switching the appliance off:

Press the main On/Off switch (1). The red circle becomes visible, the temperature display goes out, and the fridge and light are switched off.

Disconnecting the appliance (for a prolonged period):

1. Switch off the appliance.

2. Pull out the mains plug or switch off the fuse.

3. Clean the appliance.

4. Leave the appliance door open.

Refrigerator Compartment:

The refrigerator compartment defrosts fully automatically. While the unit is running, condensation or hoarfrost forms on the back panel. This is normal. The rear panel defrosts automatically, and the condensation runs into the condensation channel and is conveyed to the refrigerating unit where it evaporates. Keep the condensation channel and drainage hole clean.

Freezer Compartment:

The freezer compartment does not defrost automatically. A layer of hoarfrost will impair refrigeration and increase power consumption. Regularly defrost the freezer compartment.

Caution: Do not scrape off hoarfrost or ice with a knife or pointed object, as this could damage the refrigerant tubes.

Proceed as follows to defrost the freezer:

1. Approx. 4 hours before defrosting, switch on super freezing so the food drops to a very low temperature.

2. Remove the frozen food and place it temporarily in a cool location.

3. Switch the appliance off.

4. Pull out the mains plug or remove the fuse.

5. To accelerate defrosting, place a pan of hot water on a trivet in the freezer compartment.

6. Wipe up condensation with a cloth or sponge.

7. Wipe the freezer compartment dry.

8. Switch the appliance on again.

9. Put the frozen food back in the freezer compartment.

Caution:

■ Do not use abrasive, chloride or acidic cleaning agents or solvents.

■ Do not use scouring or abrasive sponges as the metallic surfaces could corrode.

■ Never clean shelves and containers in the dishwasher, as the parts may become deformed.

Cleaning procedure:

1. Before cleaning, switch the appliance off.

2. Pull out the mains plug or switch off the fuse.

3. Take out the frozen food and store it in a cool location.

4. Clean the appliance with a soft cloth, lukewarm water, and a little pH-neutral washing-up liquid. Rinsing water must not run into the light.

5. Wipe the door seal with clear water only and then wipe it dry thoroughly.

6. Ensure rinsing water does not run through the drainage hole into the evaporation area.

7. After cleaning, reconnect and switch the appliance back on.

8. Put the frozen food back into the freezer compartment.

Cleaning Interior Fittings:

All variable parts can be taken out for cleaning. To remove glass shelves, lift them, pull them forwards, lower, and swivel out to the side. To remove door shelves, lift them upwards and take them out. Regularly clean the condensation channel and drainage hole with a cotton bud or similar implement.

■ Install the appliance in a dry, well-ventilated room, not in direct sunlight or near a heat source.

■ If required, use an insulating plate.

■ Allow warm food and drinks to cool down before placing them in the appliance.

■ Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator compartment and use the low temperature of the frozen food to cool refrigerated food.

■ Open the appliance as briefly as possible.

■ Regularly defrost the freezer compartment to remove the layer of frost.

■ Ensure that the freezer compartment door has been closed properly.

■ Occasionally clean the rear of the appliance to prevent an increased power consumption.

Quite normal noises:

■ Droning: Motors are running (e.g., refrigerating units, fan).

■ Bubbling, humming or gurgling noises: Refrigerant is flowing through the tubing.

■ Clicking: Motor, switches or solenoid valves are switching on/off.

Preventing noises:

■ If the appliance is not level: Align the appliance with a spirit level. Use the height-adjustable feet or place packing underneath them.

■ If the appliance is not free-standing: Move the appliance away from adjacent units or appliances.

■ If containers or storage areas wobble or stick: Check the removable parts and re-insert them correctly if required.

■ If bottles or receptacles are touching each other: Move the bottles or receptacles slightly away from each other.

In some cases, it is adequate to switch off the appliance for 5 minutes. If the temperature is too high, wait a few hours and check if it has approached the set value. If the temperature is too low, check the temperature again the next day.

This could be due to a defective bulb or a jammed light switch.

If the bulb is defective:

1. Switch the appliance off.

2. Pull out the mains plug or switch off the fuse.

3. Slide the cover forwards and remove.

4. Change the bulb. (Replacement bulb: 220-240 V a.c., E14 bulb holder, see defective bulb for wattage.)

If the light switch is jammed:

Check whether the light switch can move.

Loosen the frozen food with a blunt object. Do not use a knife or a pointed object.

A thick layer of frost can be caused by the freezer door not being closed properly. Defrost the freezer compartment and always ensure the door is closed properly afterwards.

This indicates that the condensation channel or drainage hole is blocked. Clean the condensation channel and the drainage hole as described in the cleaning section of the manual.

This could be due to several reasons:

■ Freezer compartment door is open: Close the freezer compartment door until it engages audibly.

■ Temperature has been set too low: Increase the temperature setting.

■ Super freezing is switched on: Switch off super freezing.

This may be because:

■ The appliance was opened frequently: Do not open the appliance unnecessarily.

■ The ventilation openings have been covered: Remove any obstacles.

The display may be flashing for the following reasons:

■ Appliance opened frequently: Do not open the appliance unnecessarily.

■ Too much food was placed in the compartment: Before placing large amounts of food in the freezer, press the “super” button.

■ The ventilation openings have been covered: Remove obstacles.

If there is no refrigeration, check the following:

■ Is the appliance switched off? Press the main On/Off switch.

■ Is there a power failure? Check whether the power is on.

■ Has the fuse been switched off? Check the fuse.

■ Is the mains plug inserted properly? Check the plug connection.

This is not a fault. It occurs if the ambient temperature is below 20 °C or if super freezing has been switched on. The interior light will go out again at ambient temperatures above 20 °C or after super freezing has been switched off.
