The MELITTA PASSIONE OT is designed for preparing beverages from coffee beans, as well as heating milk and water. It is intended for use in private households.

Any other use is considered improper and may lead to personal injury and material damage. The manufacturer accepts no liability for damage that arises from improper use of the appliance.

If the MELITTA PASSIONE OT or its power cable is damaged, there is a risk of fatal electric shock. Observe the following safety instructions:

• Do not use a damaged power cable.

• A damaged power cable may only be replaced by the manufacturer, its customer service, or a service partner.

• Do not open any covers firmly screwed onto the appliance housing.

• Only use the appliance when it is in a technically flawless condition.

• A defective appliance may only be repaired by an authorized workshop. Do not repair the appliance yourself.

• Do not make any changes to the appliance, its components, or its accessories.

• Do not immerse the appliance in water.

Escaping fluids and steam from the MELITTA PASSIONE OT can be very hot, and parts of the appliance can also become very hot. To avoid scalds and burns, please observe the following:

• Avoid escaping fluids and steam coming into contact with your skin.

• Do not touch the nozzles on the outlet during and immediately after dispensing a beverage. Wait until the components have cooled down.

To avoid personal injury and material damage while using your MELITTA PASSIONE OT, follow these safety instructions:

• Do not reach into the interior of the appliance during operation.

• Keep the appliance and its power cable out of the reach of children under 8 years of age.

• This appliance may be used by children over 8 years of age and by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or a lack of experience and knowledge, if they are supervised or have been instructed in using the appliance safely and understand the resulting risks.

• Children must not play with the appliance.

• Cleaning and maintenance must not be undertaken by children younger than 8 years of age. Children over 8 years of age must be supervised during cleaning and maintenance.

• Disconnect the appliance from the power supply when left unsupervised for a long time.

Check the completeness of your MELITTA PASSIONE OT delivery using the following list:

• Screw-in aid for the water filter

• Long milk hose

• Cleaning brush

• Fully automatic coffee makers cleaner

• Milk system cleaning agent

• Fully automatic coffee makers descaling agent

• Water filter

• Test strip for determining the water hardness.

Depending on the version, a milk container with a short milk hose may also be included.

For proper installation of your MELITTA PASSIONE OT, please observe the following instructions:

• Do not install the appliance in damp rooms.

• Install the appliance on a stable, flat, and dry surface.

• Do not install the appliance in the vicinity of sinks or similar.

• Do not install the appliance on hot surfaces.

• Install the appliance at a sufficient distance (approx. 10 cm) from walls and other objects. The space above the appliance should be at least 20 cm.

• Route the power cable so it cannot be damaged by edges or hot surfaces.

When switching on the MELITTA PASSIONE OT for the first time, you will set the language, time, and water hardness. It is recommended to pour away the first two cups of coffee after initial start-up. If you plan to use a water filter, insert it only after this initial setup.

1. Place a vessel beneath the outlet.

2. Press the ON/OFF button. The display will show a welcome message and a prompt to “Please set up the machine.”

3. Confirm with “menu/ok”. The “Language” menu will appear.

4. Select your language with the arrow buttons and confirm with “menu/ok”. The “Water hardness” menu will appear.

5. Select the determined water hardness range with the arrow buttons or confirm the default value with “menu/ok”. The request “Please refill and insert water tank” will appear.

6. Remove the water tank, rinse it with clean water, fill it with fresh water, and insert it back into the appliance. The appliance will heat up and perform an automatic rinse. The ready symbol will appear on the display.

7. Fill coffee beans into the bean container. If required, a water filter can now be inserted.

Your MELITTA PASSIONE OT performs an automatic rinse when switched on and off. Rinsing water is conducted into the drip tray.

Switching on the appliance:

1. Place a vessel beneath the outlet.

2. Press the ON/OFF button. The welcome display appears, the appliance heats up, and performs an automatic rinse. The ready symbol will then appear on the display.

Switching off the appliance:

1. Place a vessel beneath the outlet.

2. Press the ON/OFF button. The appliance performs an automatic rinse and then switches off.

The appliance also switches off automatically when not operated for a long time. The off time can be set in the “Auto OFF” menu. No rinsing occurs if no beverage has been prepared or if the water tank is empty.

You can use the menu on your MELITTA PASSIONE OT to set individual beverages and perform maintenance.

Calling up the menu and confirming selection:

Press the “menu/ok” button for longer than 2 seconds to call up the menu. Briefly press the “menu/ok” button to confirm a selection.

Navigating or changing a numerical value:

Use the up and down arrow buttons to navigate in the menu or to increase/decrease a numerical value. Press and hold an arrow button to move quickly.

Exiting a menu:

Select the “Exit” command with the arrow buttons and confirm with “menu/ok” to exit a menu.

Calling up submenus:

To reach certain programs, you will need to navigate through several submenus. For example, to reach the Descaling programme:

1. Press the “menu/ok” button for 2 seconds.

2. Use the arrow buttons to select “Care” and confirm with “menu/ok”.

3. Use the arrow buttons to select “Descaling” and confirm with “menu/ok”.

Roasted coffee beans lose their aroma over time. Only fill the bean container with as many coffee beans as you will consume over the next 3 to 4 days.

ATTENTION: The use of unsuitable types of coffee can lead to clogging of the grinder. Do not use freeze-dried or caramelized coffee beans. Do not use any coffee powder or instant products.

1. Open the lid of the bean container.

2. Fill coffee beans into the bean container.

3. Close the lid of the bean container.

For optimum coffee enjoyment, use only fresh, cold water without carbon dioxide and change the water daily. The quality of the water largely determines the flavor of the coffee, so using a water filter is recommended.

1. Open the lid of the water tank and pull the water tank upwards out of the appliance by the handle.

2. Fill the water tank with water.

3. Insert the water tank into the appliance from above and close the lid.

For the best coffee enjoyment, use cooled milk. Depending on your version of the MELITTA PASSIONE OT, you can use the supplied milk hose or milk container.

Connecting the Milk Container:

1. Connect the milk hose to the connection at the outlet.

2. Connect the free end of the milk hose to the milk container.

Store the filled milk container in the refrigerator.

Connecting a Commercial Milk Pack:

1. Connect the long milk hose to the connection at the outlet.

2. Insert the free end of the milk hose into a commercial milk pack.

After dispensing several beverages, the drip tray and coffee grounds container of your MELITTA PASSIONE OT may become full. The projecting float indicates the filling level of the drip tray. The appliance will also display a message when the containers are full. Always empty both at the same time.

1. Pull the drip tray forwards out of the appliance.

2. Remove the coffee grounds container and empty it.

3. Empty the drip tray.

4. Insert the coffee grounds container.

5. Push the drip tray into the appliance up to the stop.

If you empty the containers while the appliance is switched off, the machine will not register this action and may still request you to empty them.

Preparing Cappuccino:

1. Ensure the display shows the ready symbol and milk is connected.

2. Place a vessel beneath the outlet.

3. Press the “Cappuccino” direct key. The grinding and coffee dispensing will start, followed by milk dispensing. The process ends automatically.

4. After removing the vessel, the display will show: “Easy Cleaning? (OK for start)”. You can either execute the Easy Cleaning programme immediately or prepare more beverages and run it later.

Preparing Latte Macchiato:

1. Ensure the display shows the ready symbol and milk is connected.

2. Place a vessel beneath the outlet.

3. Press the “Latte Macchiato” direct key. Milk dispensing will begin and end automatically, followed by the grinding and coffee dispensing process.

4. After removing the vessel, the display will prompt for “Easy Cleaning?”. You can run the program then or later.

Preparing Milk Foam or Warm Milk:

1. Ensure the ready symbol is on the display and milk is connected. Place a vessel beneath the outlet.

2. Press the “Milk foam/Warm milk” direct key.

– For Milk foam: briefly press the button.

– For Warm milk: press the button for longer than 2 seconds.

3. Milk dispensing will begin and end automatically. After preparation, the machine will prompt for “Easy Cleaning?”.

Preparing Hot Water:

1. Ensure the ready symbol is on the display. Place a vessel beneath the outlet.

2. Press the “Hot water” direct key.

3. Hot water dispensing will begin and end automatically. Remove the vessel.

You can change beverage settings on your MELITTA PASSIONE OT for the current preparation only. These changes are not saved permanently.

Changing beverage settings before preparation:

• Before selecting a beverage, use the arrow buttons to set the desired beverage amount.

• Before selecting a beverage, use the “Coffee strength” button to set the desired coffee strength.

If a beverage is not prepared within 1 minute, the appliance will switch back to the default settings.

Changing beverage settings during preparation:

• During beverage dispensing, use the arrow buttons to adjust the beverage amount.

• During the grinding process, use the “Coffee strength” button to adjust the coffee strength.

The “Two cups” button on your MELITTA PASSIONE OT allows you to prepare two beverages simultaneously. This feature is only possible for pure coffee drinks like Espresso, Café Crème, and Ristretto. It is not available for hot water, hot milk, or any mixed beverages.

1. Place two vessels beneath the outlet.

2. Press the “Two cups” button.

3. Continue as described for the preparation of the relevant beverage (e.g., press the Espresso button).

This setting only applies to the single beverage being prepared. If a beverage is not started within 1 minute, the appliance switches back to single-cup dispensing.

You can permanently change the default settings for your MELITTA PASSIONE OT to customize your beverages. These settings will remain until changed again. The following can be adjusted:

• Coffee amount: 25 ml to 220 ml

• Milk amount or milk froth amount: 25 ml to 220 ml

• Hot water amount: 25 ml to 220 ml

• Coffee strength: Very mild, mild, normal, strong, very strong

• Temperature: Low, normal, high

The process is similar for all beverages. As an example, here is how to change the coffee strength for an Espresso:

1. Ensure the ready symbol appears on the display.

2. Press the “menu/ok” button for longer than 2 seconds to open the menu.

3. Navigate to the “Direct keys > Espresso > Coffee strength” menu.

4. Use the arrow buttons to select the desired coffee strength and confirm with “menu/ok”.

5. Repeatedly select the “Exit” command to exit the menu.

The newly selected coffee strength will be used the next time an Espresso is prepared.

To avoid damage to the appliance, it is recommended to clean the brewing unit of your MELITTA PASSIONE OT once a week.

Removing the brewing unit:

1. Ensure the appliance is switched off.

2. Open the side cover. To do this, reach into the recess on the right of the appliance and push the cover off backwards. Take off the cover.

3. Press and hold the red lever on the brewing unit handle and turn the handle clockwise until it engages at the stop.

4. Pull the brewing unit out of the appliance by the handle.

Cleaning and Re-inserting:

1. Rinse the brewing unit thoroughly from all sides under running water until it is free of coffee remains.

2. Allow the brewing unit to drip dry.

3. Use a soft, dry cloth to remove coffee residues from the surfaces inside the appliance.

4. Insert the brewing unit back into the appliance. Press and hold the red lever on the brewing unit handle and turn the handle counter-clockwise until it engages at the stop.

5. Close the cover by inserting it and moving it forwards until it engages.

The MELITTA PASSIONE OT has several automated cleaning programs to maintain hygiene and performance.

“Easy Cleaning” Programme (Milk System Rinse):

This program rinses the milk system. The appliance requests you to run it after each milk beverage preparation. It can also be run manually from the “Care > Easy Cleaning” menu.

“Cleaning milk system” Programme:

This program deep cleans the milk system using a cleaning agent and should be run once a week. It takes approximately 3 minutes. Navigate to “Care > Cleaning milk system” menu to start.

“Cleaning coffee system” Programme:

This program removes coffee oil residues using a cleaning tablet. It is recommended every 2 months or as requested by the appliance. The program takes about 10 minutes and is started from the “Care > Coffee system cleaning” menu.

“Descaling” Programme:

This program removes limescale deposits using a descaling agent. It is recommended every 3 months or as requested. The program takes about 25 minutes. Navigate to “Care > Descaling” menu to start. If a water filter is installed, remove it before descaling.

Using a water filter extends the service life of your MELITTA PASSIONE OT and means you have to descale it less frequently.

Inserting the water filter:

1. Before inserting, place the new water filter in a vessel filled with fresh tap water for a few minutes.

2. The water filter is screwed into the thread on the base of the water tank using the provided screwing aid.

3. Press the “menu/ok” button for longer than 2 seconds.

4. Navigate to the “Care > Filter > Insert filter” menu.

5. Select “Start” and confirm with “menu/ok”. Follow the instructions on the display. The water hardness will automatically be set to “Soft”.

Changing the water filter:

Change the water filter when the appliance requests you to do so.

1. Press the “menu/ok” button for longer than 2 seconds.

2. Navigate to the “Care > Filter > Change filter” menu.

3. Select “Start” and confirm with “menu/ok”. Follow the instructions on the display.

Removing the water filter:

If you no longer wish to use the filter, you can remove it.

1. Navigate to the “Care > Filter > Remove filter” menu.

2. Select “Start” and follow the instructions. The water hardness will be reset to the previous setting.

3. You may need to re-adjust the water hardness setting manually.

Here are solutions for common issues with your MELITTA PASSIONE OT:

Coffee only emerges in drips from the outlet.

• Cause: Grinding fineness is too fine. Action: Set a coarser grinding fineness.

• Cause: Appliance is soiled. Action: Clean the brewing unit and run the cleaning programme.

• Cause: Appliance is covered inside with limescale. Action: Descale the appliance.

Coffee does not flow.

• Cause: Water tank is not filled or inserted incorrectly. Action: Fill the water tank and ensure it is positioned correctly.

• Cause: Brewing unit is clogged. Action: Clean the brewing unit.

“Fill beans” appears on the display although the bean container is full.

• Cause: Coffee beans do not drop into the grinder. Action: Press a direct key. Tap lightly on the bean container. Clean the bean container. If coffee beans are too oily, use different coffee beans.

Loud grinder noise.

• Cause: Foreign object in the grinder. Action: Contact the hotline.

Brewing unit cannot be inserted after removing.

• Cause: The handle for the locking mechanism is not in the correct position. Action: Check that the handle is correctly engaged.

• Cause: The drive is not in the correct position. Action: Press and hold the “Coffee strength” button, then also press the ON/OFF button. The appliance initialises. Release the buttons.

“System error” appears on the display.

• Cause: Software problem. Action: Switch the appliance off and on again. If the problem persists, contact the hotline.

Venting the Appliance:

It is recommended to vent the appliance when it is not used for a long period, prior to transport, and when there is a risk of frost. Venting removes residual water from the appliance.

1. Place a vessel beneath the outlet.

2. Press the “menu/ok” button for longer than 2 seconds.

3. Navigate to the “System > Venting” menu.

4. Select “Start” with the arrow buttons and confirm with “menu/ok”.

5. Follow the instructions on the display. The appliance will switch off.

Transporting the Appliance:

Before transporting the appliance, carry out the following activities:

1. Vent the appliance.

2. Empty the drip tray and the coffee grounds container.

3. Empty the water tank.

4. Empty the bean container.

5. Clean the appliance.

6. Secure loose parts (like the cup plate) with suitable adhesive tape.

7. Package the appliance, preferably in its original packaging, to avoid damage in transit.
