What are important tips for handling and maintaining ink cartridges and the printhead?

• The instructions in the user guide are for replacing ink cartridges, not first-time installation (follow setup poster for that).

• When you turn the printer off, always use the (Power) button. This allows the printer to cap the printhead and protect it from damage.

• Do not clean the printhead unnecessarily. This wastes ink and shortens the life of the cartridges.

• Handle ink cartridges carefully. Dropping, jarring, or rough handling during installation can cause temporary printing problems.

• If you are transporting the printer:

— Make sure you turn off the printer using the (Power) button and wait until all sounds of internal motion stop before unplugging.

— The printer must be transported sitting flat; it should not be placed on its side, back, front, or top.

CAUTION: HP recommends that you replace any missing cartridges as soon as possible to avoid print quality issues and possible extra ink usage or damage to the ink system. Never turn off the printer when ink cartridges are missing.

How can I check the estimated ink levels?

What should I do if the printer is not responding (nothing prints)?

There are print jobs stuck in the print queue: Open the print queue, cancel all documents, and then reboot the computer. Try to print after the computer reboots. Refer to the Help system for the operating system for more information.

Check the HP software installation: If the printer is turned off when printing, an alert message should appear on your computer screen; otherwise, the HP software might not be installed correctly. To resolve this, uninstall the HP software completely, and then reinstall the HP software.

Check the cable connections: Make sure both ends of the USB cable or Ethernet cable are secure. If the printer is connected to a network, check the Link light on the back of the printer and ensure you are not using a phone cord.

Check any personal firewall software installed on the computer: A firewall might block communication. Try temporarily disabling the firewall. If the problem persists, the firewall is not the source. Re-enable the firewall.

Restart the printer and the computer: If the printer is still not responding, turn off the printer and the computer, and turn them back on.

What should I do if something on the page is missing or incorrect?

• Try the solutions in ‘Print quality is not acceptable’.

• Check the printer location and length of USB cable: High electromagnetic fields (like those from USB cables) can cause slight distortions. Move the printer away from the source. Use a USB cable less than 3 meters (9.8 feet) long.

How can I improve print quality if it’s not acceptable?

1. Make sure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges.

2. Check the ink levels; cartridges might have insufficient ink. Replace if necessary, though you don’t need to replace until quality becomes unacceptable. CAUTION: Leaving cartridge slots empty for extended periods may lead to print quality problems or damage the printhead. If a cartridge has been out for a while or you had a recent paper jam and poor quality, clean the printhead.

3. Check the paper loaded in the input tray. Ensure it’s loaded correctly (print side down for glossy photo paper), not wrinkled, or too thick. Ensure it lays flat.

4. Check the paper type. Use HP papers or paper with ColorLok technology appropriate for the printer.

5. Always ensure paper is flat. Store specialty paper (like HP Advanced Photo Paper) in its original packaging inside a resealable plastic bag on a flat surface in a cool, dry place. Return unused photo paper to the bag after printing.

6. Check the print settings via the Properties dialog box (button may be called Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer Properties, Printer, or Preferences):

• Check color settings (e.g., ensure it’s not set to print in grayscale, check advanced settings like saturation, brightness, color tone).

• Check the print quality setting and ensure it matches the paper type loaded. Choose a lower quality if colors run together, or a higher setting for high-quality photos (ensure appropriate photo paper is loaded).

7. Print and evaluate a print quality diagnostic report.

What should I check if I’m having problems using HP ePrint?

• Make sure the printer is connected to the Internet using an Ethernet or wireless connection. (NOTE: You cannot use web features if connected via USB).

How do I clean the exterior of the printer?

WARNING! Before cleaning, turn the printer off using the Power button and unplug the power cord from the electrical socket. Use a soft, damp, lint-free cloth to wipe dust, smudges, and stains off the case. Keep fluids away from the interior and the control panel.

How and when should I maintain the printhead and ink cartridges?

Perform these procedures only when directed for resolving print quality issues. Unnecessary cleaning or aligning wastes ink and shortens cartridge life.

Clean the printhead if your printed output is streaked or has incorrect or missing colors. There are two stages of cleaning, each lasting about two minutes and using increasing amounts of ink. Review print quality after each stage; only initiate the next stage if quality is still poor. If quality remains poor after both stages, try aligning the printer. If problems persist after cleaning and aligning, contact HP support.

Align the printhead: The printer aligns automatically during initial setup. You might want to align if the printer status page shows streaking or white lines through color blocks, or if you have print quality issues.

Clean page smears when printed output has smearing on the back, indicating possible ink buildup inside the printer.

NOTE: Cleaning uses ink, so clean only when necessary. Turning the printer off improperly can cause print quality problems.
