Please observe the following safety warnings when using your HAIER BD-318A chest freezer:

WARNING: Keep ventilation openings, in the appliance enclosure or in the built-in structure, clear of obstruction.

WARNING: Do not use mechanical devices or other means to accelerate the defrosting process other than those recommended by the manufacturer.

WARNING: Do not damage the refrigerant circuit.

WARNING: Do not use electrical appliances inside the food storage compartment of the appliance, unless they are of the type recommended by the manufacturer.

Additionally, if the power cable is damaged, an approved cable provided by a manufacturer or a service agent must be used for replacement. After installation, ensure the plug is easily accessible.

If you have bought your new HAIER BD-318A in exchange for an old refrigerator/freezer, it is essential to destroy any existing latch or bolt locks on the old appliance before you put it aside. This prevents playing children from locking themselves in.

Please have the old appliance ecologically disposed of by a company specialized in environmental protections, as the appliance may contain harmful components in the coolant which have to be sucked off with special equipment.

To ensure proper performance of your HAIER BD-318A, follow these installation guidelines:

1. Place your appliance in a cool, well-aired, dry room. Strictly avoid high ambient temperatures and direct sunlight.

2. Avoid installing the freezer near a heat source like a heating unit, oven, or cooker, as this increases power consumption.

3. If installation near a heat source is unavoidable, use a suitable insulation plate (not asbestos) and maintain the following minimum distances:

– From a gas or electric cooker: 3 cm

– From a radiator or oven: 5 cm

– From a wall, piece of furniture, or another appliance: 2 cm

4. Never obstruct the ventilation grille (if equipped).

5. For freezers without a ventilation grille, leave sufficient space between the rear of the appliance and the wall to allow warm air to escape.

6. The appliance must be placed horizontally on a level base to ensure an unimpeded refrigerant circuit and optimum function.

It is important to leave the HAIER BD-318A standing in its final position for at least 2 hours before switching it on. This allows the refrigerant circuit to stabilize and prevents operating problems.

Before connecting the appliance, make sure the inner area, especially the corners, is absolutely dry.

To remove the typical odor of a new appliance, thoroughly clean the interior compartment with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar. Do not use washing liquids, sharp or granular cleaning implements, or any cleaning products containing soda.

The refrigerant in your HAIER BD-318A is easily inflammable. The refrigerant circuit is hermetically sealed. An improper intervention can cause an acute fire hazard. Therefore, it is important to follow these precautions:

1. Omit any mechanical influence on the cooling system, especially on accessible parts like the rear wall condenser, compressor, capillary tube, or drying filter.

2. Interventions on the cooling system must be carried out by professional and authorized personnel only.

3. Escaping refrigerant can injure your eyes. In the event of eye contact with the refrigerant, wash your eyes instantly under plenty of running water and consult an eye specialist immediately.

Connection to Power Supply:

Your appliance must be connected to a power socket with a grounded connection, which conforms to respective standards and has been installed by an authorized specialist. Before you connect the plug, make sure that the voltage (V) on the appliance’s rating plate corresponds with that of your mains. If the voltage differs, contact your dealer and do not connect the appliance.

Temperature Selection (Thermostat):

The temperature control switches the appliance on and off and sets the cooling temperature. The control is intentionally resistant to turning to prevent accidental changes; use a coin or screwdriver to vary the setting.

The temperature can be adjusted between:

• Min. / minimum number (slight cooling)

• Max. / maximum number (lowest temperature)

Turning the control panel marking to “0” or “OFF” will stop the compressor (not all models have this function).

Temperature settings should be adjusted according to:

• Ambient temperature of the appliance

• Quantity of stored foodstuff

• Frequency of opening

A medium setting is recommended.

The layout of indicator lights on your HAIER BD-318A may vary, but the following always applies:

• green = CONTROL/OPERATING: This light indicates the appliance is connected to power and operating. The green control light must always be on when the appliance is connected to the mains and switched on.

• red = ALARM: This light indicates the interior temperature is too high. It is normal for the red light to go on during the first start-up, after defrosting, or when filling the freezer with fresh food. It will go off automatically when the temperature reaches approximately -15°C. If the red light stays on for more than 12 to 24 hours, there may be a serious problem.

• yellow = SUPER FREEZE: This light indicates the SUPER FREEZE switch is on and the thermostat function is disabled. The compressor will continue cooling until the switch is turned off.

Control Panel Versions:

1st version with two lights:

• A: Temperature control (Thermostat)

• B: SUPER FREEZE (yellow light)

• C: CONTROL (green light)

2nd version with three lights:

• A: Temperature control (Thermostat)

• B: SUPER FREEZE (yellow light)

• C: ALARM (red light)

• D: CONTROL (green light)

If your HAIER BD-318A is equipped with a buzzer, it will sound when the red indicator light (ALARM) goes on, signaling that the internal temperature is too high. The buzzer is silenced automatically when you turn on the SUPER FREEZE switch.

Follow these steps to start your HAIER BD-318A:

1. Fully unpack the appliance.

2. Remove the polystyrene parts in the compressor chamber (if supplied).

3. Remove documents and any accessories from the inside of the appliance.

4. Clean the interior with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar, and dry thoroughly with a cloth.

5. Close the appliance.

6. Insert the plug in the socket.

7. Switch on the appliance by turning the temperature control to the right. For the time being, turn the controller fully to the right to the Max position (the green and red lights will go on).

8. If equipped with a SUPER FREEZE SWITCH, turn it on (the yellow light will go on too).

9. Do not open the appliance for about 4 hours, or for as long as the red light is on, to allow the internal temperature to drop to the necessary level.

10. You can now fill the appliance with any amount of deep-frozen food (purchased ready-frozen goods).

11. Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH again after 24 hours at the latest.

12. If you wish to freeze fresh, unfrozen food, proceed according to the instructions for freezing fresh food.

Follow these guidelines for freezing and storing fresh food in your HAIER BD-318A:

Preparation and Labeling:

• Almost all fresh products are suitable for freezing.

• Pack fresh products in portions suitable for your household to prevent defrosting quantities that are too large for one day’s consumption.

• Label the portions clearly with at least the following information:

– Product name (e.g., beef fillet)

– Weight of portion

– Quantity (total of pieces)

– Freezing date

– Use by date (see storage table for guidelines)

Freezing Procedure:

a) Place fresh foods in the pre-freezing compartment at the side (if equipped) or on the bottom of the freezer, which is the coldest part. Avoid putting fresh foods in direct contact with already frozen food.

b) Only fill fresh food quantities suitable for the freezing capacity of your appliance (see rating plate for XX kg/24h) within a 24-hour period.

c) If available, switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH.

d) After 24 hours, move the now deep-frozen goods to a hanging basket so the bottom area is free for freezing additional fresh foods.

e) Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (the yellow light will go off).

f) Set the temperature control according to the filling capacity.

g) Keep the storage temperature at -18°C or colder. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature.

To ensure correct storage of frozen food in your HAIER BD-318A, never fill the storage shelf up to the edge. Always allow space between the lid and the frozen foods. The “Stacking mark (S)” on the interior wall indicates the maximum fill level.

To save energy in normal ambient temperatures (+18 to +22°C), you can set the temperature control based on the filling capacity:

• Whenever cleaning or defrosting, remove the power plug.

• After closing the freezer lid, do not open it immediately or force it open. A vacuum seal is created which will release after 1 or 2 minutes, allowing the lid to be opened normally.

• To prevent condensation and ice formation, allow cooked food to cool to ambient temperature before storage.

• Leave the freezer lid open as briefly as possible to save energy and prevent excessive ice build-up.

• If the red indicator light (ALARM) comes on unexpectedly, do not open the lid and take appropriate measures immediately.

• Do not use a screwdriver or other metal objects to remove ice. The interior walls are delicate. Use only plastic or wooden scrapers.

• Do not store bottles containing liquids, as they can explode when frozen.

• Never keep containers with explosive substances (gas lighters, petrol, ether, etc.) in the freezer.

• Deep-frozen ice cream and ice lollies should be eaten only a few minutes after removal to avoid injury to lips and tongue (danger of skin detachment).

• Avoid touching the inner walls with wet hands.

For external appearance, occasionally clean with furniture polish or an enamel protecting product. Never use these products on the inside. Clean the lid seal (B) with warm water now and again without using any cleaning product.

If your appliance has a condenser (R) in the rear, from time to time remove dirt and dust with a light brush or duster. Dust and dirt impede heat release and increase energy consumption.

If you leave your appliance out of use for an extended period, leave it open to prevent odors from building up. For appliances with locks, when the lid is open, set the lock in the “closed” position and keep the key away from children.

Ice and frost layers must be removed from time to time as they act as insulation and prevent coldness from being released effectively. To remove ice, use a plastic or wood scraper without sharp edges. Cover the frozen food with a cloth to help collect the scraped ice.

Under normal conditions, the HAIER BD-318A should be defrosted once or twice a year. Never use electrical appliances like hair dryers or devices with a naked flame (e.g., candles) to defrost.

Proceed as follows:

1. Provide a suitable non-metallic container (e.g., plastic container or wash-basket).

2. Make absolutely sure that you remove the plug from the power socket.

3. Dry your hands thoroughly to prevent skin damage from contact with ice (use gloves).

4. Remove all frozen food, roll it firmly in newspaper, place it in the container, and put the container in a cool, dry room.

5. Cover the container all around with a thick blanket.

6. Lift the divider (H) (if equipped) out of the guide rail.

7. Use the divider as a defrosting dish and push it under the freezer where the defrosting water drain-plug is located.

8. Pull the plug (if provided) out of the freezer bottom.

9. Scrape the thickest ice carefully from the inside and put it in the kitchen sink.

10. To speed up defrosting, you can place a large pot of warm (not too hot) water on the freezer bottom.

11. In freezers without a drain plug, continuously wipe up the water with a sponge.

12. Thoroughly clean the inside with a mixture of warm water and vinegar, then rinse with clear water.

13. Wipe the freezer dry with an absorbent cloth and allow it to air for about 3 to 4 minutes.

14. Replace the drain-plug (if provided).

15. Empty the defrosting water dish and slide it back as a divider into the guide rails.

16. Close the chest and plug it back into the socket.

17. Set the temperature control to the maximum setting (green and red lamps go on) and switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if provided) (yellow lamp lights additionally).

18. Now refill the frozen food, placing the oldest items at the top. Carry out steps 1 to 17 within a maximum of two hours.

19. When the red lamp goes off, reset the temperature control to a setting suitable for the filling capacity.

20. Switch off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if provided) after about 8 to 12 hours, or latest after 24 hours (the yellow light goes off).

The compressor (motor) of your HAIER BD-318A does not operate continuously. It is controlled by the thermostat and switches on automatically when the set temperature is exceeded and off when it is reached.

Noise can be heard from every compressor-cooling system when it is switched on. This noise is produced by the motor operating and by the refrigerant flowing in the cooling system circuit. These noises are normal and do not indicate any functional trouble.

In unheated rooms and in cold weather, condensation can build up on the outer walls of the appliance. This is not a sign of trouble and will disappear when the weather becomes warmer.

In the event of a power failure, the insulation of the appliance walls provides 10 to 12 hours of storage time for frozen food. If it takes longer to eliminate a problem, the food will begin to defrost. Take prompt action to eliminate the problem and, if necessary, shift the food to another freezer.

If you are experiencing cooling issues with your HAIER BD-318A, check the following possible causes and remedies:

• Appliance not stood for 2 hours before switching on: Did you let the appliance stand for at least 2 hours before switching it on to stabilize the refrigerant circuit? If not, unplug the freezer, lift it for a brief moment, then put it back down. After 2 hours, plug it back in. Do not open the chest during this period and for a further 12 hours afterwards, or until the red light goes off.

• Power connection issue: Is the plug in good condition and properly plugged into the socket? Is the socket under current? (Test by connecting a small appliance like a hand-mixer).

• Lid not closing properly: The lid of the appliance does not close properly, and the seal does not press firmly. Test the seal by placing a piece of writing paper between the seal and the edge of the chest and closing the lid. It should be difficult to pull the paper out from any side. If you can pull the paper out without resistance from one or more sides, notify your after-sales service.

• Heavy ice formation: Heavy ice on the inner walls can impede cooling. (See “cleaning and maintenance” for defrosting instructions).

• Proximity to heat source: The appliance is exposed to direct sunlight or is installed near a heat source (oven, radiator, etc.). Protect the appliance from direct sunlight and check the distance to the heat source.

• Overfilling: The amount of food added does not correspond with the freezing capacity of your appliance (see rating plate: XXkg/24h), or you have filled it with too much warm food.

The storage time for purchased deep-frozen products varies and depends on the product type and packaging. Always observe the producer’s instructions on the packaging. For fresh food that you freeze, consult the table below for approximate storage times. After being defrosted, food must be consumed immediately, but latest within the next 24 hours.
