The GARMIN NUVI 1440 has the following features based on the series model comparison:

Your GARMIN NUVI 1440 has several key components:

Power button: Press to turn the nüvi on and off.

The Main Menu of your GARMIN NUVI 1440 displays several icons with specific functions:

3. Usage mode: Touch this to select a usage mode (e.g., Automobile, Pedestrian).

6. Fit the bottom of your nüvi into the cradle.

7. Tilt your nüvi back until it snaps into place.

WARNING: This product contains a lithium-ion battery. To prevent damage, remove the unit from the vehicle when exiting or store it out of direct sunlight.

To acquire satellite signals with your GARMIN NUVI 1440, follow these steps:

1. Go outdoors to an open area, away from tall buildings and trees.

2. Turn on your nüvi.

Acquiring satellite signals can take a few minutes. The bars on the screen indicate satellite strength. When at least one of the bars is green, your nüvi has acquired satellite signals.

To change the usage mode (e.g., Automobile, Pedestrian, Bicycle) on your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. From the Main menu, touch the usage mode icon on the upper-left corner.

2. Select a mode, and touch OK.

3. Touch Yes, and follow the on-screen instructions to configure your settings.

If you are not following roadways as you navigate, use the Off Road mode on your GARMIN NUVI 1440. To enable it, touch Tools > Settings > Navigation > Route Preference > Off Road > OK.

Press and quickly release the Power button on your GARMIN NUVI 1440 to view additional options:

• Touch the brightness icons to adjust the screen brightness.

• Touch Lock Screen to prevent accidental screen touches.

• Touch Power Off to turn off your nüvi.

You can also turn off the nüvi by holding the power button for approximately three seconds.

If your GARMIN NUVI 1440 stops functioning, you can reset it by pressing and holding the Power button.

From the Main menu of your GARMIN NUVI 1440, touch Volume. Touch the plus and minus icons to adjust the volume. Touch the box next to Mute to mute all audio.

To find a destination using the “Where To?” menu on your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. From the main menu, touch Where To?.

2. Select a category, such as Address, Points of Interest, or Go Home.

3. If applicable, select a subcategory (e.g., under Points of Interest, select Food, Hotels, etc.).

4. Select a destination from the list that appears.

5. Touch Go! to begin navigation.

To add a stop while navigating a route on your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. Touch the back arrow > Where To?.

2. Search for the extra stop.

3. Touch Go!.

4. Touch Add as Via Point to add this stop before your final destination.

To change your destination while navigating a route on your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. Touch the back arrow > Where To?.

2. Search for the new destination.

3. Touch Go!.

4. Touch Set as New Destination to make this your final destination.

To calculate a detour while navigating a route on your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. From the map screen, touch the detour icon (a road sign with an arrow).

2. Touch one of the available detour options.

If the route you are currently taking is the only reasonable option, the nüvi might not calculate a detour.

To stop navigating the current route on your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. With a route active, touch Menu.

2. Touch Stop.

To find a specific address on your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. Touch Where To? > Address.

2. If necessary, change the state, country, or province.

3. Touch Search All. If you know the city, touch Spell City, enter the city/postal code, and touch Done. Select it from the list.

4. Enter the number of the address, and touch Done.

5. Enter the street name, and touch Done.

6. Select the correct street from the list, if necessary.

7. Touch the address, if necessary, to begin navigation.

To set your home location for the place you return to most often with your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. Touch Where To? > Go Home.

2. Select an option:

• Enter your address.

• Use your current location.

• Choose from a list of recently found locations.

Once set, you can navigate home by touching Where To? > Go Home.

After you have selected a location, the Go! page on your GARMIN NUVI 1440 opens with several options:

1. Information Box: Touch to view more information for the location.

2. Zoom Icons (+ and -): Touch to zoom in and out on the map.

3. Call: Touch to call this location (if a phone is connected).

4. Save: Touch to save this location to your Favorites.

5. Go!: Touch to create a turn-by-turn route to this location.

6. Back Arrow: Touch to return to the previous page. Touch and hold to return to the Main menu.

You can provide feedback on POIs directly from your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. On the Go! page for a location, touch the white information box.

2. Touch Feedback for the following options:

• Edit Rating: Touch a circle to give the POI a rating from 1 to 5 stars.

• Report Error: The item will be removed from future searches. Reports will be sent to Garmin when your nüvi is connected to a computer.

• Edit Phone Number: Use the keyboard to change the phone number.

To find a destination by spelling its name on your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. Touch Where To? > Points of Interest > Spell Name.

2. Using the on-screen keyboard, enter letters of the name of your destination.

3. Touch Done.

To search near another location on your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. Touch Where To? > Near.

2. Select an option:

• Where I Am Now: Search near your current location.

• A Different City: Search near a city you enter.

• A Recent Destination: Search near a recently found place.

• A Favorite Destination: Select a destination from your Favorites.

• My Current Route: Search along your active route.

• My Destination: Search near your current destination.

Saving a Place You Find:

1. From the Go! page for a location, touch Save.

2. Touch OK. The place is saved in Favorites.

Editing a Saved Place:

1. Touch Where To? > Favorites.

2. Select the category and the location you want to edit.

3. Touch Edit.

4. Touch an item to edit:

• Change Name: Enter a new name and touch Done.

• Attach Photo: Select a picture to assign to the location.

• Change Map Symbol: Touch a new symbol to mark this location on the map.

• Change Phone Number: Enter a phone number and touch Done.

• Change Categories: Select another category for the location.

• Delete: Touch Yes to remove this item from the Favorites list.

On some models, like the GARMIN NUVI 1440, you can create and save routes with multiple stops:

1. Touch Where to? (or Tools) > Routes > New.

2. Touch Add New Start Point.

3. Find a location for your starting point and touch Select.

4. Touch Add New End Point.

5. Find a location for your ending point and touch Select.

6. Touch the plus icon (+) to add another location to your route. Touch the minus icon (-) to remove a location.

7. Touch Next to calculate your route and view it on the map.

8. Touch Save to save the route and exit.

If you know the geographic coordinates of your destination, you can use your GARMIN NUVI 1440 to navigate there:

1. Touch Where To? > Coordinates.

2. Touch the coordinate you want to adjust.

3. Touch Format to select the correct coordinate format for the type of map you are using.

4. Enter the coordinates and touch Next.

The navigation map page on your GARMIN NUVI 1440 has several interactive areas:

1. Next Turn Indicator: Touch to view the next turn in detail.

2. Turn List: Touch the text bar at the top of the map to view the full turn list for your route.

3. Zoom Controls: Touch to zoom in and out.

4. Back Arrow: Touch to return to the Main menu.

5. Data Field: Touch to display a different data field (e.g., arrival time, distance to destination).

6. Vehicle Icon: Touch to view the Where Am I? page.

7. Speed/Arrival Field: Touch to view the trip computer.

The GARMIN NUVI 1440 also includes Lane Assist, which tells you which lane you should be in for your next maneuver, and Junction View, which displays a view of upcoming junctions.

To view the trip computer on your GARMIN NUVI 1440, touch the Speed field on the map.

To reset trip computer information from the map, touch the Speed field, then touch Reset. You can choose from the following options:

• Reset Trip Data: Resets the information on the trip computer.

• Reset Max: Resets the maximum speed.

• Reset Fuel Price: Resets the fuel price.

The GARMIN NUVI 1440 features Junction View, which displays a view of some upcoming junctions and indicates which lane you should be driving in. To view the Junction View page, touch the upper-left corner of the Map page. To access the Junction View page from the Next Turn page, touch Junction View.

To connect your GARMIN NUVI 1440 to your computer:

1. Insert a memory card (optional). Press it in until it clicks.

2. Connect the mini-USB connector to the back of the nüvi.

3. Connect the larger end of the cable to an available USB port on your computer.

Your nüvi and memory card will appear as removable drives in My Computer (Windows) or as mounted volumes (Mac).

Transferring Files:

1. Connect your GARMIN NUVI 1440 to the computer.

2. Browse your computer for the file you want to copy.

3. Highlight the file and click Edit > Copy.

4. Open the “Garmin” or memory card drive/volume.

5. Click Edit > Paste. The file appears in the list of files in the nüvi memory or on the memory card.

6. When finished, safely eject the device from your computer and unplug it.

Deleting Files:

1. Connect the nüvi to your computer, and open the nüvi or memory card drive/volume.

2. Highlight the file you want to delete.

3. Press the Delete key on the computer keyboard.

CAUTION: If you do not know the purpose of a file, do not delete it. Your nüvi memory contains important system files that should not be deleted.

The ecoRoute feature on your GARMIN NUVI 1440 calculates your vehicle fuel economy, carbon footprint, and the fuel price of navigating to a destination. To access it, touch Tools > ecoRoute. The first time you access the feature, you will be asked to enter fuel and mileage information about your vehicle. You can view fuel reports, calibrate fuel economy, adjust fuel prices, and take the Driving Challenge to improve your driving habits.

When you are receiving traffic information on your GARMIN NUVI 1440, a traffic icon appears on the Map page. The color indicates the severity of traffic conditions:

To manually avoid a traffic delay on your route with the GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. On the Map page, touch the traffic icon.

2. Touch Traffic On Route.

3. Touch the arrows to view other traffic delays on your route, if necessary.

4. Touch Avoid to avoid the traffic delay.

To change system settings on your GARMIN NUVI 1440, touch Tools > Settings > System. You can adjust the following:

• GPS Simulator: Turn on to simulate navigation and save battery, or turn off for live GPS mode.

• Usage Mode: Specify navigation optimization for Automobile, Pedestrian, or Bicycle.

• Keyboard: Touch QWERTY for a standard layout or ABCDE for an alphabetical layout.

• Units: Change units of measure to Kilometers or Miles.

• About: Display software version, unit ID, and other information.

• Restore: Restore the system settings to factory defaults.

To change navigation settings, touch Tools > Settings > Navigation on your GARMIN NUVI 1440. You can change:

• Route Preference: Select Faster Time, Shorter Distance, Off Road, or Less Fuel for route calculation.

• Avoidances: Select the road types you want to avoid on your routes.

• Transit Types: Select which mode of public transit to avoid when using cityXplorer maps.

To change map settings, touch Tools > Settings > Map. You can customize the following:

• Map Detail: Adjust the amount of detail shown on the map.

• Map View: Select a map perspective: Track Up (2D), North Up (2D), or 3D.

• Vehicle: Touch Change to change the icon used to display your position on the map.

• Trip Log: Show or hide the log of your travels.

• Map Info: View the maps loaded on your nüvi and enable or disable them.

• Restore: Restore the original map settings.

Cleaning the Unit: Clean the outer casing (not the touchscreen) using a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution, and then wipe it dry. Avoid chemical cleaners and solvents.

Cleaning the Touchscreen: Clean the touchscreen with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Use water, isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglass cleaner, if needed. Apply the liquid to the cloth, and then gently wipe the touchscreen.

Protecting Your nüvi:

• Do not store the nüvi where prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can occur.

• Do not expose the nüvi to water.

• Never use a hard or sharp object to operate the touchscreen as damage might result.

To calibrate the touchscreen of your GARMIN NUVI 1440:

1. Turn off the nüvi.

2. Hold the upper-left corner of the screen while turning on the nüvi.

3. Release the Power button when the Garmin screen appears.

4. Continue to hold the upper-left corner of the touch screen for 30 seconds until a white screen with “Press dot” appears.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to press the dots as they appear.

To clear all user-entered information from your GARMIN NUVI 1440, which restores original settings and erases saved items:

1. Hold your finger on the lower-right corner of the nüvi screen while turning on the nüvi.

2. Keep your finger pressed until the pop-up window appears.

3. Touch Yes to clear all user data.

Charge your GARMIN NUVI 1440 for at least 4 hours before using on battery power. You can charge it by using one of the following methods:

• Connect the vehicle power cable.

• Connect the USB cable (included in some packages) to a computer.

• Connect an AC adapter (optional accessory).

To increase the accuracy of the battery gauge, fully discharge the battery and then fully charge it. Do not unplug the nüvi until it is totally charged.

If your GARMIN NUVI 1440 is not acquiring satellite signals, take it out of parking garages and away from tall buildings and trees. Remain stationary for several minutes to allow it to locate the satellites.

Clean the suction cup and windshield with rubbing alcohol. Dry with a clean, dry cloth. Mount the suction cup as described in the setup instructions.

If your GARMIN NUVI 1440 is not charging, check the fuse in the vehicle power cable. Also, ensure the vehicle is turned on and is supplying power to the power outlet. Your nüvi can only charge between 32°F and 113°F (0°C and 45°C). If the nüvi is placed in direct sunlight or in a hot environment, it cannot charge.

To maximize the time between charges on your GARMIN NUVI 1440, turn down the backlight brightness. Touch Tools > Settings > Display > Brightness.

To improve the accuracy of the battery gauge on your GARMIN NUVI 1440, allow the unit to fully discharge, and then fully charge it without interrupting the charge cycle.

If the touchscreen is unresponsive, you should calibrate the touchscreen on your GARMIN NUVI 1440. This can be done by turning the device off, then holding the upper-left corner of the screen while turning it back on and following the prompts.

If your computer does not detect your GARMIN NUVI 1440, follow these steps:

1. Unplug the USB cable from your computer.

2. Turn off the nüvi.

3. Plug the USB cable into a USB port on your computer and into your nüvi. The nüvi should automatically turn on and go into USB mass storage mode. Ensure your nüvi is connected to a USB port on the computer and not a USB hub.
