Physical Components:

• Power button: Press to turn the GARMIN NUVI 1400 on and off.

• Speaker: Provides audio prompts and sounds.

• Mini-USB connector: For charging and connecting to a computer.

• microSD™ card slot: For additional maps and data.

• Microphone: For hands-free calling on compatible models.

Main Menu Icons:

1. GPS satellite strength: Shows the strength of the GPS signal.

2. Bluetooth technology status: Shows if Bluetooth is connected.

3. Usage mode: Touch to select a usage mode (e.g., Automobile, Pedestrian).

4. Current time: Touch to change time settings.

5. Battery status: Shows the remaining battery life.

6. Where To?: Touch to find a destination.

7. View Map: Touch to view the map.

8. Phone: Touch to make a call when connected to a compatible mobile phone.

9. Volume: Touch to adjust the volume.

10. Tools: Touch to use tools such as settings and Help.

Before mounting the GARMIN NUVI 1400, see the Important Safety and Product Information guide for information about laws pertaining to windshield mounting.

Mounting Your nüvi:

1. Remove the clear plastic from the suction cup. Place the suction cup on the windshield.

2. Flip the lever back toward the windshield to secure the mount.

3. Snap the cradle onto the suction cup arm.

4. Plug the vehicle power cable into the back of your GARMIN NUVI 1400.

5. Plug the other end of the vehicle power cable into a power outlet in your vehicle. Your unit should turn on automatically if it is plugged in and the vehicle is running. Follow the on-screen instructions.

6. Fit the bottom of your GARMIN NUVI 1400 into the cradle.

7. Tilt your GARMIN NUVI 1400 back until it snaps into place.

WARNING: This product contains a lithium-ion battery. To prevent damage, remove the unit from the vehicle when exiting or store it out of direct sunlight.

1. Go outdoors to an open area, away from tall buildings and trees.

2. Turn on your GARMIN NUVI 1400.

Acquiring satellite signals can take a few minutes. The bars on the main screen indicate satellite strength. When at least one of the bars is green, your GARMIN NUVI 1400 has acquired satellite signals.

Your GARMIN NUVI 1400 offers several usage modes for different navigation methods, such as Automobile, Pedestrian, and Bicycle. Routing is calculated differently based on your usage mode.

To change your usage mode:

1. From the Main menu, touch the usage mode icon on the upper-left corner.

2. Select a mode, and touch OK.

3. Touch Yes, and follow the on-screen instructions to configure your settings.

Press and quickly release the Power button to view additional options:

• Touch the brightness icons to adjust the screen brightness.

• Touch Lock Screen to prevent accidental screen touches.

• Touch Power Off to turn off your GARMIN NUVI 1400. You can also turn off the device by holding the power button for approximately three seconds.

Resetting Your nüvi:

If your GARMIN NUVI 1400 stops functioning, reset it by pressing and holding the Power button until it restarts.

The Where To? menu provides several categories to search for addresses, cities, and other locations. To perform a search:

1. Touch Where To?.

2. Select a category (e.g., Address, Points of Interest).

3. Select a subcategory if necessary.

4. Select a destination from the list.

5. Touch Go! to begin navigation.

Adding a Stop (Via Point):

1. While navigating, touch the map, then touch > Where To?.

2. Search for the extra stop.

3. Touch Go!.

4. Touch Add as Via Point to add this stop before your final destination.

Changing Destinations:

1. While navigating, touch the map, then touch > Where To?.

2. Search for the extra stop.

3. Touch Go!.

4. Touch Set as New Destination to make this your final destination.

Taking a Detour:

1. While navigating a route, touch the map.

2. Touch the detour icon. If the route you are currently taking is the only reasonable option, the nüvi might not calculate a detour.

Stopping the Route:

1. With a route active, touch Menu.

2. Touch Stop.

Setting a Home Location:

1. Touch Where To? > Go Home.

2. Select an option:

• Enter your address.

• Use your current location.

• Choose from a list of recently found locations.

Going Home:

To navigate home after you have set your home location, touch Where To? > Go Home.

Changing Your Home Location:

1. Touch Tools > My Data > Set Home Location.

2. Select an option to set the new location.

Your route is marked with a magenta line. As you travel, your GARMIN NUVI 1400 guides you with voice prompts and arrows on the map. A checkered flag marks your destination.

Map Page Icons:

• Next Turn Indicator: Touch to view the next turn.

• Turn List: Touch the text bar at the top of the map to view the turn list.

• Zoom Icons (+/-): Touch to zoom in and out.

• Back Arrow: Touch to return to the Main menu.

• Data Field: Touch to display a different data field (e.g., arrival time, distance).

• Vehicle Icon: Touch to view the Where Am I? page.

• Trip Computer: Touch the Speed field to view the trip computer.

Lane Assist and Junction View:

On some models, the turn indicator includes Lane Assist, which tells you which lane to be in for your next maneuver. The Junction View page displays a view of upcoming junctions and which lane you should be in. To view it, touch the upper-left corner of the Map page.

On some models, you can create and save up to 10 routes.

Creating a Saved Route:

1. Touch Where to? > Routes > New.

2. Touch Add New Start Point, find your starting location, and touch Select.

3. Touch Add New End Point, find your ending location, and touch Select.

4. Touch the + icon to add another location to your route. Touch the – icon to remove a location.

5. Touch Next to calculate your route and view it on the map.

6. Touch Save to save the route and exit.

Taking a Saved Route:

Touch Where to? > Routes. Select the route you want to take and touch Go!.

NOTE: Bluetooth wireless technology is available on some nüvi models.

Pairing Using the nüvi Settings:

1. From the Main menu, touch Tools > Settings > Bluetooth > Add.

2. Enable the Bluetooth component on your phone, and enable Find Me/Discoverable/Visible mode.

3. Touch OK on the GARMIN NUVI 1400.

4. Select your phone from the list, and touch OK.

5. Enter the nüvi Bluetooth PIN (1234) in your phone.

Receiving a Call:

When you get a call, the Incoming Call window opens. Touch Answer to answer or Ignore to decline.

In a Call:

During a call, touch the In Call icon, then touch > Call Options for the following:

• Touch Tones: Displays a keypad.

• Transfer Audio To Phone: Switches audio to your phone for privacy.

• Mute Microphone.

To end a call, touch the In Call icon, then touch > End Call.

Connecting to Your Computer:

1. Insert a memory card (optional).

2. Connect the mini-USB connector to the back of the GARMIN NUVI 1400.

3. Connect the larger end of the cable to an available USB port on your computer.

Your GARMIN NUVI 1400 and memory card will appear as removable drives in My Computer (Windows) or as mounted volumes (Mac).

Transferring Files:

1. Browse your computer for the file you want to copy.

2. Highlight the file and click Edit > Copy.

3. Open the “Garmin” or memory card drive/volume.

4. Click Edit > Paste. The file appears in the list of files on the device.

5. When finished, safely eject the device from your computer and unplug it.

Deleting Files:

1. Connect the GARMIN NUVI 1400 to your computer and open the device’s drive/volume.

2. Highlight the file you want to delete.

3. Press the Delete key on your computer keyboard.

CAUTION: If you do not know the purpose of a file, do not delete it. Your GARMIN NUVI 1400 memory contains important system files that should not be deleted.

Touch Tools > ecoRoute. The ecoRoute feature calculates your vehicle fuel economy, carbon footprint, and the fuel price of navigating to a destination. The first time you access it, you will be asked to enter fuel and mileage information about your vehicle.

• Fuel Report: Touch Tools > ecoRoute > Fuel Report to view your average fuel economy, carbon footprint, and cost of fuel consumed.

• Calibrate Fuel Economy: For more accurate reports, go to Tools > ecoRoute > Fuel Report > Calibrate. Calculate your miles per gallon and enter the result.

• Adjust Fuel Price: Touch Tools > ecoRoute > Fuel Price and enter the current fuel price.

• Driving Challenge: Touch Tools > ecoRoute > Driving Challenge > Start to score your driving habits on acceleration, deceleration, and speed to help you maximize fuel economy.

• Adjust Vehicle Profile: Touch Tools > ecoRoute > Vehicle Profile to enter Fuel Type, City Fuel Efficiency, and Hwy Fuel Efficiency.

Your GARMIN NUVI 1400 can receive FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) content with an integrated traffic receiver. Garmin is not responsible for the accuracy of the traffic information.

Receiving Traffic Information:

The following conditions must be met:

• The traffic receiver must be connected to the GARMIN NUVI 1400.

• The traffic receiver and GARMIN NUVI 1400 must be connected to an external power source.

• The devices must be in data range of an FM station transmitting traffic information.

Traffic in Your Area:

When receiving traffic, an icon appears in the upper-left corner of the Map page. The color indicates severity:

• Green: Low severity, traffic is flowing normally.

• Yellow: Medium severity, traffic is slightly congested.

• Red: High severity, traffic is heavily congested or stopped.

Manually Avoiding Traffic on Your Route:

1. On the Map page, touch the traffic icon.

2. Touch Traffic On Route.

3. Touch the arrows to view other traffic delays on your route, if necessary.

4. Touch Avoid to avoid the traffic delay.

1. Touch Tools > Settings.

2. Touch the category you want to change (e.g., System, Navigation, Display).

3. Touch the button under the setting name to change it.

Common Settings:

• System: Change Usage Mode, Keyboard layout (QWERTY/ABCDE), Units (Miles/Kilometers), and view software version in About.

• Navigation: Change Route Preference (Faster Time, Shorter Distance, Less Fuel, Off Road), and set Avoidances (e.g., U-Turns, Highways).

• Display: Change Color Mode (Day/Night/Auto), turn on Screen Shot mode, and adjust Brightness.

• Time: Select time format (12-hour, 24-hour) and set the current time (or set to Automatic).

• Language: Change Voice Language and Text Language.

• Map: Adjust Map Detail, Map View (Track Up/North Up/3D), Vehicle icon, and Trip Log settings.

• Security: Turn on Garmin Lock™ with a 4-digit PIN and a security location.

Cleaning the Unit:

Clean the outer casing (not the touchscreen) using a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution, and then wipe it dry. Avoid chemical cleaners and solvents that can damage plastic components.

Cleaning the Touchscreen:

Clean the touchscreen with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Use water, isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglass cleaner, if needed. Apply the liquid to the cloth, and then gently wipe the touchscreen.

Protecting Your nüvi:

• Do not store the GARMIN NUVI 1400 where prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can occur, because it can cause permanent damage.

• Do not expose the GARMIN NUVI 1400 to water. Contact with water can cause the unit to malfunction.

• Never use a hard or sharp object to operate the touchscreen because damage might result.

Charge your GARMIN NUVI 1400 for at least 4 hours before using on battery power.

• Connect the vehicle power cable.

• Connect the USB cable (included in some packages) to a computer.

• Connect an AC adapter (optional accessory).

To increase the accuracy of the battery gauge, fully discharge the battery and then fully charge it. Do not unplug the GARMIN NUVI 1400 until it is totally charged.

1. Turn off the GARMIN NUVI 1400.

2. Hold the upper-left corner of the screen while turning on the GARMIN NUVI 1400.

3. Release the Power button when the Garmin screen appears.

4. Continue to hold the upper-left corner of the touch screen for 30 seconds until a white screen with “Press dot” appears. Follow the on-screen instructions.

IMPORTANT: This deletes all user-entered information.

1. Hold your finger on the lower-right corner of the GARMIN NUVI 1400 screen while turning on the device.

2. Keep your finger pressed until the pop-up window appears.

3. Touch Yes to clear all user data.

All original settings are restored. Any items that you have saved are erased.

Take your GARMIN NUVI 1400 out of parking garages and away from tall buildings and trees. Remain stationary for several minutes to allow the device to acquire a signal.

Clean the suction cup and windshield with rubbing alcohol. Dry with a clean, dry cloth. Mount the suction cup as described in the setup instructions.

Check the fuse in the vehicle power cable. Ensure the vehicle is turned on and is supplying power to the power outlet. Your GARMIN NUVI 1400 can only charge between 32°F and 113°F (between 0°C and 45°C). If the GARMIN NUVI 1400 is placed in direct sunlight or in a hot environment, it cannot charge.

To maximize the time between charges, turn down the backlight. Touch Tools > Settings > Display > Brightness.

Allow the GARMIN NUVI 1400 to fully discharge, and then fully charge it without interrupting the charge cycle. This will recalibrate the battery gauge.

Calibrate the touchscreen. Turn the device off, then press and hold the upper-left corner of the screen while turning it back on. Continue holding until the “Press dot” screen appears and follow the instructions.

When your GARMIN NUVI 1400 is in USB mass storage mode, a picture of a nüvi connected to a computer is shown. Also, you should see two new removable disk drives listed in My Computer.

1. Unplug the USB cable from your computer.

2. Turn off the GARMIN NUVI 1400.

3. Plug the USB cable into a USB port on your computer and into your GARMIN NUVI 1400. The device automatically turns on and goes into USB mass storage mode. Ensure your GARMIN NUVI 1400 is connected to a USB port and not a USB hub.

If you have several network drives mapped on your computer, Windows can have trouble assigning drive letters to your GARMIN NUVI 1400 drives. See your operating system Help file to learn how to map or assign drive letters.

First, save the hotel in your Favorites. You can then search near the hotel for restaurants.

1. Touch Where To? > Near.

2. Select A Favorite Destination.

3. Select the hotel from your Favorites.

4. Touch Points of Interest > Food and Drink.

5. Select a category. Your GARMIN NUVI 1400 searches for locations near the hotel.

6. Select a restaurant.

Ensure your GARMIN NUVI 1400 model supports Bluetooth. Touch Tools > Settings > Bluetooth. Verify that the Bluetooth field is set to Enabled. Ensure your phone is turned on and is less than 33 feet (about 10 meters) away from your GARMIN NUVI 1400.
