The GARMIN NUVI 1200 model includes the “Speaks Street Names” feature. For other features such as Bluetooth Technology, Lane Assist, Junction View, or Speed Limits on Map, please refer to the specific model number as these features vary across the nüvi 1100/1200/1300/1400 series.

The main menu on your GARMIN NUVI 1200 has several icons and status indicators:

1. GPS satellite strength: Shows the current strength of the satellite signal.

2. Bluetooth technology status: (On some models) Indicates if Bluetooth is active.

3. Usage mode: Touch to select a usage mode like Automobile or Pedestrian.

4. Current time: Touch to change time settings.

5. Battery status: Shows the remaining battery life.

6. Where To?: Touch to find a destination.

7. View Map: Touch to view the map.

8. Phone: (On some models) Touch to make a call when connected to a compatible mobile phone.

9. Volume: Touch to adjust the volume.

10. Tools: Touch to use tools such as settings and Help.

Follow these steps to mount your GARMIN NUVI 1200:

1. Remove the clear plastic from the suction cup. Place the suction cup on the windshield.

2. Flip the lever back toward the windshield to secure it.

3. Snap the cradle onto the suction cup arm.

4. Plug the vehicle power cable into the back of your nüvi.

5. Plug the other end of the vehicle power cable into a power outlet in your vehicle. The unit should turn on automatically if it is plugged in and the vehicle is running.

6. Fit the bottom of your nüvi into the cradle.

7. Tilt your nüvi back until it snaps into place.

WARNING: This product contains a lithium-ion battery. To prevent damage, remove the unit from the vehicle when exiting or store it out of direct sunlight.

1. Go outdoors to an open area, away from tall buildings and trees.

2. Turn on your nüvi.

Acquiring satellite signals can take a few minutes. The bars on the main menu indicate satellite strength. When at least one of the bars is green, your nüvi has acquired satellite signals.

Your GARMIN NUVI 1200 offers several usage modes (e.g., Automobile, Pedestrian, Bicycle) for different navigation methods. To change the mode:

1. From the Main menu, touch the usage mode icon on the upper-left corner.

2. Select a mode, and touch OK.

3. Touch Yes, and follow the on-screen instructions to configure your settings.

Press and quickly release the Power button to view additional options:

Adjust brightness: Touch the sun icons to adjust screen brightness.

Lock Screen: Touch Lock Screen to prevent accidental screen touches.

Power Off: Touch Power Off to turn off your nüvi. You can also turn off the device by holding the power button for approximately three seconds.

If your GARMIN NUVI 1200 stops functioning, you can reset it by pressing and holding the Power button.

1. Touch Where To? on the main menu.

2. Select a category (e.g., Address, Points of Interest).

3. Select a subcategory if necessary.

4. Select a destination from the list.

5. Touch Go! to begin navigation.

Adding a Stop:

1. While navigating, touch the menu icon > Where To?.

2. Search for the extra stop.

3. Touch Go!.

4. Touch Add as Via Point to add this stop before your final destination.

Changing Destinations:

1. While navigating, touch the menu icon > Where To?.

2. Search for the new destination.

3. Touch Go!.

4. Touch Set as New Destination.

Taking a Detour:

1. While navigating, touch the menu icon.

2. Touch the detour icon. If the current route is the only reasonable option, the nüvi might not calculate a detour.

Stopping the Route:

1. With a route active, touch Menu.

2. Touch Stop.

Setting a Home Location:

1. Touch Where To? > Go Home.

2. Select an option: Enter your address, Use your current location, or Choose from a list of recently found locations.

Going Home:

To navigate home after you have set your home location, touch Where To? > Go Home.

Changing Your Home Location:

Touch Tools > My Data > Set Home Location and select an option.

After you have selected a location, the ‘Go!’ page opens with the following options:

1. Information Box: Touch to view more information for the location.

2. Zoom: Touch the plus (+) and minus (-) symbols to zoom in and out.

3. Call: (On some models) Touch to call this location when connected to a phone.

4. Save: Touch to save this location to your Favorites.

5. Go!: Touch to create a turn-by-turn route to this location.

6. Back Arrow: Touch to return to the previous page. Touch and hold to return to the Main menu.

Saving a Place You Find:

1. From the ‘Go!’ page, touch Save.

2. Touch OK. The place is saved in Favorites.

Saving Your Current Location:

From the Map page, touch the vehicle icon. Then touch Save Location.

Editing Saved Places (Favorites):

1. Touch Where To? > Favorites.

2. Select the category and the location you want to edit.

3. Touch Edit.

4. Touch an item to edit, such as Change Name, Attach Photo, Change Map Symbol, or Change Phone Number.

Your route is marked with a magenta line. The map page includes several interactive areas:

1. Next Turn Indicator: Touch to view the next turn.

2. Turn List: Touch the text bar at the top to view the full turn list.

3. Zoom Controls: Touch to zoom in and out.

4. Back Arrow: Touch to return to the Main menu.

5. Data Field: Touch to display a different data field (e.g., Arrival Time, Distance to Next).

6. Vehicle Icon: Touch to view the ‘Where Am I?’ page.

7. Speed Field: Touch to view the trip computer.

To view the trip computer, touch the Speed field on the map. The trip computer displays your current speed and provides statistics about your trip.

To reset information:

1. From the map, touch the Speed field.

2. Touch Reset.

3. Select an option: Reset Trip Data, Reset Max (maximum speed), or Reset Fuel Price.

1. Insert a memory card (optional). Press it in until it clicks.

2. Connect the mini-USB connector to the back of the nüvi.

3. Connect the larger end of the cable to an available USB port on your computer.

Your nüvi and memory card will appear as removable drives in My Computer (Windows) or as mounted volumes (Mac).

Transferring Files:

1. Connect your nüvi to your computer.

2. Browse your computer for the file you want to copy.

3. Highlight the file and select Edit > Copy.

4. Open the “Garmin” or memory card drive/volume.

5. Select Edit > Paste.

6. When finished, safely eject the device from your computer before unplugging.

Deleting Files:

1. Connect your nüvi to your computer and open the nüvi or memory card drive/volume.

2. Highlight the file you want to delete.

3. Press the Delete key on your computer keyboard.

CAUTION: If you do not know the purpose of a file, do not delete it. Your nüvi memory contains important system files that should not be deleted.

The ‘Where Am I?’ page provides current location information, including nearby hospitals, police stations, and fuel stations. This is helpful if you need to tell emergency personnel your location.

1. From the Main menu, touch Tools > Where Am I?.

2. Touch a button on the right to view the nearest locations in that category (e.g., Hospitals).

3. Touch Save Location to save your current location.

Touch Tools > Settings > System to change the following:

GPS Simulator: Turn on to turn off the GPS mode, simulate navigation, and save battery power.

Keyboard: Touch QWERTY for a standard layout or ABCDE for an alphabetical layout (on some models).

Units: Change units of measure to Kilometers or Miles.

About: Display the nüvi software version, unit ID number, and other software information.

Restore: Restore the system settings to factory defaults.

Touch Tools > Settings > Navigation to change the following:

Route Preference: Select a preference for calculating your route.

Faster Time: Calculates routes that are faster to drive but can be longer in distance.

Shorter Distance: Calculates routes that are shorter in distance but can take more time to drive.

Off Road: Calculates point-to-point routes (without roads).

Less Fuel: Calculates routes that could use less fuel. Based on road speeds and vehicle acceleration data.

Avoidances: Select the road types you want to avoid on your routes (e.g., U-Turns, Highways).

Touch Tools > Settings > Display to adjust the following:

Color Mode: Select Day (light background), Night (dark background), or Auto to automatically switch between the two.

Screen Shot: Turn on Screen Shot mode. Touch the camera icon to take a screen shot.

Brightness: Adjust the backlight brightness level. Reducing brightness increases battery life.

Touch Tools > Settings > Time. You can select a time format (12-hour, 24-hour, or UTC) and manually set the current time. Select Automatic to have the nüvi set the time based on your location.

Touch Tools > Settings > Map to change the following:

Map Detail: Adjust the amount of detail shown on the map. More detail can cause the map to redraw slower.

Map View: Select a map perspective (Track Up 2D, North Up 2D, or 3D).

Vehicle: Touch to change the icon used to display your position on the map.

Trip Log: Show or hide the log of your travels.

Map Info: View the maps loaded on your nüvi and enable or disable them.

General Care: Your nüvi contains sensitive electronic components. To minimize risk of damage, avoid dropping your unit and operating it in high-shock and high-vibration environments.

Cleaning the Unit: Clean the outer casing (not the touchscreen) using a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution, then wipe it dry. Avoid chemical cleaners and solvents.

Cleaning the Touchscreen: Clean the touchscreen with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Use water, isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglass cleaner if needed. Apply the liquid to the cloth, and then gently wipe the touchscreen.

Protecting the Unit:

Do not store the nüvi where prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can occur, as it can cause permanent damage.

Do not expose the nüvi to water.

Never use a hard or sharp object to operate the touchscreen as damage might result.

1. Turn off the nüvi.

2. Hold the upper-left corner of the screen while turning on the nüvi.

3. Release the Power button when the Garmin screen appears.

4. Continue to hold the upper-left corner of the touch screen for 30 seconds until a white screen with “Press dot” appears. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete calibration.

IMPORTANT: This deletes all user-entered information.

1. Hold your finger on the lower-right corner of the nüvi screen while turning on the nüvi.

2. Keep your finger pressed until the pop-up window appears.

3. Touch Yes to clear all user data. All original settings are restored, and any items you have saved are erased.

Charge your nüvi for at least 4 hours before using on battery power. You can charge it by connecting the vehicle power cable, the USB cable (included in some packages), or an optional AC adapter.

To maximize the lifetime of the battery, do not leave your nüvi in direct sunlight, and avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat. To increase the accuracy of the battery gauge, fully discharge the battery and then fully charge it without interruption.

If your unit will not charge in your vehicle, you might need to replace the fuse.

1. Unscrew the black, round end piece of the adapter and remove it. You may need a coin to help unscrew it.

2. Remove the fuse (glass and silver cylinder).

3. Replace it with the appropriate fuse type, which can be found on the side of the vehicle adapter.

4. Ensure the silver tip is placed in the black end piece and screw the end piece back on.

Take your nüvi out of parking garages and away from tall buildings and trees. Remain stationary for several minutes to allow it to acquire signals.

Clean the suction cup and windshield with rubbing alcohol. Dry with a clean, dry cloth. Mount the suction cup as described in the setup instructions.

Check the fuse in the vehicle power cable. Ensure the vehicle is turned on and is supplying power to the power outlet. Your nüvi can only charge between 32°F and 113°F (0°C and 45°C). If the nüvi is placed in direct sunlight or in a hot environment, it cannot charge.

To maximize the time between charges, turn down the backlight. Touch Tools > Settings > Display > Brightness.

Allow the unit to fully discharge, and then fully charge it without interrupting the charge cycle to improve the accuracy of the battery gauge.

Calibrate the touchscreen. Turn the device off, then press and hold the upper-left corner of the screen while turning it back on. Continue to hold until the “Press dot” screen appears and follow the instructions.

When your nüvi is in USB mass storage mode, a picture of a nüvi connected to a computer is shown on the screen. Also, you should see two new removable disk drives listed in My Computer on your PC.

1. Unplug the USB cable from your computer.

2. Turn off the nüvi.

3. Plug the USB cable into a USB port on your computer and into your nüvi. The nüvi should automatically turn on and go into USB mass storage mode. Ensure your nüvi is connected to a USB port on the computer and not a USB hub.
