To install the EPPENDORF 5417 C, follow these steps:

1. Remove the transport safety devices according to the instructions on the pack insert and save them for future transport. Only tilt the device slightly; do not place it on its side.

2. Place the centrifuge onto a stable, vibration-free, horizontal surface. Ensure the centrifuge is not exposed to direct sunlight.

3. Ensure sufficient ventilation by maintaining a clearance of 15 cm on both sides of the centrifuge to the wall or other devices. According to EN 61010-2-020, a safety distance of 30 cm should be observed around the centrifuge during operation.

4. Check that the main voltage and frequency correspond to the specifications on the identification plate. The main connection must be connected to a socket with a protective conductor.

5. Connect the centrifuge to the main supply and press the main switch located on the rear of the device.

6. Open the centrifuge lid by pressing Open, insert the rotor, and tighten it.

7. Remove the protective strip from the display.

When using the EPPENDORF 5417 C, observe the following safety regulations:

• The rotor and the rotor cover must always be securely fastened. Do not begin centrifugation before the rotor has been securely fastened.

• The rotor must be loaded symmetrically. Opposing tubes should be of the same type and filled equally.

• Do not use buckets and rotors showing clear signs of corrosion or mechanical defects.

• Only use original rotors and spare parts recommended by Eppendorf.

• Do not use rotors, lids, or buckets that have been subjected to chemical or mechanical damage or have exceeded their maximum operating life.

• Close test tube lids before centrifuging to prevent them from ripping off and damaging the centrifuge.

• A liquid density of 1.2 g/ccm must not be exceeded at the maximum rotational speed.

Mounting:

1. Clean the motor axle and rotor bores with a cloth.

2. Ensure the temperature of the rotor and motor axle is between 10 °C and 30 °C.

3. Mount the rotor onto the motor axle and tighten the rotor nut by turning it clockwise using the supplied hexagonal key.

Dismounting:

1. Turn the rotor nut counterclockwise using the hexagonal key.

2. For aerosol-tight rotors, if the lid is closed, insert the hexagonal key into the opening in the lid screw to remove the rotor.

Rotors and buckets must always be loaded symmetrically. Adapters may only be loaded with the recommended test tubes. Differences in the weight of filled sample tubes should be minimized to prolong drive life and reduce noise.

For swing-bucket rotors, all positions must be loaded with buckets of the same type for mechanical stabilization. Ensure grooves are clean before inserting buckets, and verify that buckets swing freely. Plastic buckets should not be lubricated.

1. Switch on the mains supply. The nominal values of the last run will appear in the display.

2. Load the rotor symmetrically and close the lid. The green lamp in the Open key will light up. If “LID” appears in the display, close the lid again.

3. To modify rotational speed/rcf, time, or temperature, use the arrow keys. The new nominal value will appear in the display.

4. To switch between “rpm” (rotational speed) and “rcf” (relative centrifugal force), press both arrow keys under the Speed section simultaneously.

5. Set the run time using the arrow keys under the Time section. The remaining time is displayed in minutes, with the last minute counted down in seconds.

6. Press Start/Stop to begin the run. The key will flash while the rotor is spinning.

7. Press Start/Stop to end the run. The rotor is braked, and the time display flashes during braking.

8. Press Open to open the lid when the control lamp in the key is lit.

Set the time above 99 minutes or below 10 seconds using the Time arrow keys until “oo” appears in the time display. This indicates continuous operation. Press Start/Stop to start or end the run. If the centrifuge runs for longer than 99 minutes, “99” will flash in the display.

Hold down the Short key for the intended duration of the run. The elapsed time is displayed in seconds. A run interrupted by releasing the key can be restarted by pressing it again before the centrifuge stops.

Runs with a duration of 10, 20, or 30 seconds can be set. If the Short key is pressed when the lid is open, status displays such as “10 t”, “14 t”, or “16 t” appear. Holding the key for longer than three seconds switches the status. The meanings are:

• “10 t”: Swing-bucket rotor runs to max 10,500 rpm (5417 R).

• “14 t”: 30-position fixed-angle rotor runs to max 14,000 rpm.

• “16 t”: 24-position fixed-angle rotor runs to max 16,400 rpm.

The Soft start/stop function extends the acceleration and braking phases to approximately 60 seconds. To activate it, press the Soft key before or during acceleration. The control lamp in the key will light up to indicate it is active. The Soft mode cannot be switched off after acceleration has finished.

Press both Time arrow keys simultaneously while the lid is open. The total run time of the centrifuge in hours will appear in the display.

If the magnetic lid latch cannot be activated due to power failure:

1. Turn off the main switch and wait for the rotor to come to a standstill.

2. Pull out the plastic knob located at the left front edge of the base plate (labeled E in the manual diagrams) and pull it downwards.

3. Disengage the lid latch by pressing the lid down slightly while activating the emergency release.

4. Open the lid carefully.

5. Reinsert the plastic knob after use.

The red fuse holder is located next to the main cable port in the connection unit. Remove the fuse holder and replace the two fuses. Ensure you use fuses with the nominal values printed on the device’s identification plate.

Device: Clean the outside and the rotor chamber regularly with a neutral detergent (e.g., Extran neutral, RBS neutral, or 70% isopropanol/water). Use a moist cloth for the rotor chamber. Rinse rubber seals well with water and lubricate with glycerine.

Rotors: Clean rotors and buckets regularly with a neutral cleaning liquid to prevent corrosion and residue. Check rotor bores monthly. The message “CLEAn ro” appears every 200 runs as a reminder.

Aerosol-tight Rotors: Replace lids if they show excessive wear. Maintain sealing rings regularly. Do not fasten the lid tightly during storage.

Sterilization: All rotors are autoclavable at 121 °C for 20 minutes. Replace aerosol-tight rotor lids after a maximum of ten autoclaving cycles.

Note: Never use aggressive chemicals like concentrated acids, alkalis, or chlorinated hydrocarbons.

In the event of glass breakage, carefully remove all splinters and ground glass from the rotor, buckets, adapters, and rotor chamber. You may need to replace rubber plates and adapters. Fine glass splinters can scratch surfaces and reduce chemical resistance, while air eddies can cause abraded metal clouds that damage the system.
