The DEFY DHG931 hob consists of the following components:

1. Pan support

Please adhere to the following general safety instructions when using your DEFY DHG931:

• Connect the appliance to an earthed outlet/line protected by a suitable fuse.

• If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified person.

• Do not operate the appliance if it is defective or has visible damage.

• Do not carry out any repairs or modifications on the appliance.

• Never wash down the appliance with water.

• The appliance must be disconnected from the mains during installation, maintenance, cleaning, and repair procedures.

• Be careful when using alcoholic drinks in your dishes as it may cause a fire.

• Do not use the appliance for heating closed tins and glass jars, as the pressure build-up may cause them to burst.

• Do not place flammable materials close to the appliance.

• Keep all ventilation slots clear of obstructions.

• The appliance gets hot during use. Do not touch hot burners or inner sections.

• Ensure function knobs are switched off after every use.

• When using gas, ensure the room is well-ventilated.

• Always keep children and infirm persons away from the appliance when in use.

• Only use the appliance for preparing food.

• Use a deep pan, large enough to cover the appropriate burner.

• Always dry food thoroughly before placing it in hot oil or fat.

• Never fill a pan more than one-third full of fat or oil.

• Never heat fat or fry with a lid on the pan.

• Do not fry too much food at once.

• Do not leave hot fat or oil unattended.

• Do not use or store inflammable products near the hob.

• If the surface is cracked, switch off the appliance to avoid electric shock.

• Electrical and/or gas appliances are dangerous to children. Keep children away from the DEFY DHG931 when it is operating and do not allow them to play with it.

• Accessible parts of the hob will become hot while in use. Children should be kept away until the appliance has cooled down.

• Do not place any items above the appliance that children may reach for.

• Packaging materials are dangerous for children. Keep packaging materials away from them and dispose of them responsibly.

• Any work on gas equipment must be done by authorized qualified persons who are registered LP Gas installers.

• Before installation, ensure local distribution conditions (gas nature and pressure) are compatible with the appliance’s adjustments.

• The appliance must be installed and connected according to current installation regulations, with particular attention to ventilation requirements.

• The use of a gas cooking appliance produces heat and moisture. Ensure the kitchen is well-ventilated by keeping natural ventilation holes open or installing a mechanical ventilation device (extractor hood).

• Gas appliances and systems must be regularly checked for proper functioning. The regulator, hose, and clamp must be checked and replaced as recommended by the manufacturer.

• Clean the gas burners regularly. Flames should be blue and burn evenly.

• Good combustion is required. Incomplete combustion can produce carbon monoxide (CO), which is a toxic gas.

In the event of a pan fire, follow these steps:

1. Switch off the Gas supply.

2. Smother the flames with a blanket or damp cloth.

3. Do NOT use water to extinguish an oil or fat fire.

Be aware that burns and injuries are often caused by picking up the burning pan and rushing outside with it.

If you smell gas, take the following actions immediately:

• Turn off all valves on gas appliances and the gas meter at the main control valve.

• Extinguish all naked flames.

• Do not operate any electrical appliances.

• Ventilate the area by opening doors and windows.

• Check all tubes and connections for tightness to check for leaks.

• If the odour persists, contact your nearest Defy Service Centre for assistance.

• If you still smell gas, leave the property and warn the neighbors.

• Call the fire-brigade using a telephone from outside the house.

• If you have electrically secured doors or gates, open them manually.

• Do not re-enter the property until you are told it is safe to do so.

A “burn back” is when the flame burns back into the jet. If this occurs:

1. Immediately turn off the control to the affected burner.

2. Wait a few minutes and relight the burner in the normal manner.

3. If the burn back occurs again, turn off the control knob to the affected burner and consult the nearest Defy service technician for advice.

For a safe installation of your DEFY DHG931, follow these requirements:

• A removable horizontal board must be fitted a minimum of 75mm below the hob’s worktop bottom face.

• The space between this board and the appliance must be empty.

• If installed next to a vertical kitchen cabinet, the distance between the appliance edge and the cabinet side must be at least 150mm.

• The distance between the back wall and the rear edge of the hob must be at least 55mm.

• A safety distance of at least 750mm must be left above the hob surface. If a cooker hood is installed, refer to its manual for installation height (min 650 mm).

• Surfaces, laminates, and adhesives used must be heat resistant (100 °C minimum).

• The worktop must be aligned and fixed horizontally.

• This appliance uses LPG and requires an operating pressure of 2.8-3.0 kPa. A suitable LPG regulator that complies with SANS 1237 must be used.

• Gas bottles should be located outdoors in a suitable ventilated lock-up.

• The connecting hose should not exceed 200 cm in length.

Good room ventilation is essential for the safe operation of your appliance. Air for combustion is drawn from the room and exhaust gases are emitted directly into it.

• All rooms require a window that can be opened, or equivalent.

• If there is no window or door available for room ventilation, extra ventilation must be installed.

• Do not install this appliance in a room below ground level unless it is open to ground level on at least one side.

The minimum ventilation opening requirements based on room size are:

Connecting the gas hose must be done by a registered LP installer. The general procedure is:

1. Ensure your appliance is connected close to the gas connection point and that there is no gas leakage.

2. Gas bottles should be located outdoors in a suitable ventilated lock-up.

3. The connecting hose must not be longer than 2 M.

4. Install the clamp to the hose.

5. Soak one end of the hose (15 mm inner diameter) into hot water for one minute to soften it.

6. Slip the softened end of the hose completely onto the sharp hose tip of your appliance.

7. Secure the hose by tightening the hose clamp.

8. Repeat the same procedure for the other end of the hose, securing it to the regulator on the gas bottle.

9. Always check for gas leaks after installation and whenever a new or refilled gas bottle is used for the first time.

1. Remove burners, burner caps, and grills from the hob.

2. Turn the hob upside down and place it on a flat surface.

3. Apply the supplied seal on the contours of the lower housing of the hob to prevent foreign substances and liquids from penetrating. Ensure the seal does not overlap.

4. Apply the seal by bending it around the corners as shown in the manual’s figure.

5. Turn the hob over again, align it, and place it into the cutout in the counter.

6. Secure the hob to the counter using the supplied clamp and screws. (Wooden spacers may be required depending on the counter thickness).

To check for gas leaks at the connection point:

1. Ensure that the control knobs on the hob are in the OFF position.

2. Open the valve on the Gas bottle.

3. Using a small paintbrush, apply some soapy water to all the connections.

4. If there is a leak, bubbles will appear. If this happens, close the valve on the gas bottle, check and tighten the connections immediately, then repeat the procedure to ensure there are no further leaks.

Caution: Never use a naked flame to check for gas leaks.

Gas conversion must only be carried out by a registered installer. The procedure is as follows:

1. Shut off the gas supply before starting.

2. Take off the burner cap and burner body.

3. Unscrew the injectors by turning them counterclockwise.

4. Fit the new injectors (refer to the Injector table for correct sizes).

5. Check all connections for secure fitting and tightness.

After changing injectors, the flame adjustment for all valves must be set at the reduced flow rate position.

To set the reduced gas flow rate for taps:

1. Ignite the burner to be adjusted and turn the knob to the reduced (minimum flame) position.

2. Remove the knob from the gas tap.

3. Use an appropriately sized screwdriver to adjust the flow rate adjustment screw.

• For LP (Butane – Propane) gas, turn the screw clockwise.

• For natural gas, turn the screw counter-clockwise once.

The normal length of a straight flame in the reduced position should be 6-7 mm.

4. If the flame is higher than desired, turn the screw clockwise. If it is smaller, turn it anticlockwise.

5. For the final check, bring the burner to both the high-flame and reduced positions and check whether the flame is on or off.

The following tips will help you use your appliance in an ecological way and save energy:

• Defrost frozen dishes before cooking them.

• Use pots/pans with a cover for cooking. If there is no cover, energy consumption may increase up to 4 times.

• Select the burner which is most suitable for the bottom size of the pot to be used. Always select the correct pot size for your dishes. Larger pots require more energy.

Your product is equipped with Precise flame which gives 9 specifically defined power levels. This allows for the flame size and heat to be adjusted with ease and reliability, giving better defined and more controlled cooking results.

Before initial use, clean your DEFY DHG931 as follows:

1. Remove all packaging materials.

2. Wipe the surfaces of the appliance with a damp cloth or sponge and dry with a cloth.

Important: The surface may be damaged by some detergents or cleaning materials. Do not use aggressive detergents, cleaning powder/cream, or any sharp objects.

• Before frying foods, always dry them well and gently place into the hot oil. Ensure complete thawing of frozen foods before frying.

• Do not cover the pot or pan you use when heating oil.

• Place pans and saucepans so their handles are not over the hob to prevent them from heating up.

• Do not place empty pots and saucepans on cooking zones that are switched on.

• Operating a cooking zone without a pot or pan on it will cause damage to the appliance. Turn off cooking zones after cooking is complete.

• As the hob surface can be hot, do not place plastic or aluminum vessels on it.

• Use flat-bottomed saucepans or cooking vessels only.

• Put only the appropriate amount of food in saucepans and pans to prevent overflowing.

• Place saucepans so that they are centered on the cooking zone.

• Adjust the gas flames so that they do not extend past the bottom of the cooking vessel.

The large flame symbol on the control knob indicates the highest cooking power and the small flame symbol indicates the lowest cooking power. In the turned-off position (top), gas is not supplied to the burners.

To ignite the gas burners:

1. Push the knob inwards and turn it counter-clockwise to ignite.

2. After the gas ignites, keep the knob pressed for 3-5 seconds more to engage the safety system.

3. If the gas does not ignite after you press and release the knob, repeat the same procedure, but keep the knob pressed in for 15 seconds.

Danger: Do not press the knob for longer than 15 seconds if there is no ignition. Wait for one minute and then repeat the ignition process to avoid the risk of deflagration from unburned gas.

To turn off a gas burner, turn the corresponding control knob to the off (upper) position.

The DEFY DHG931 is equipped with a gas shut-off safety system (thermic component). As a countermeasure against blowouts from fluid overflows or if the flame extinguishes for any reason, the flow of gas to the burner will automatically be terminated.

1. Carefully align the hole in the burner body with the flame failure sensor.

2. Gently lower the burner body into position.

3. Centralise and level the burner cap onto the burner body. The burner cap must be positioned so that it rests centrally on the burner body.

4. Ensure it is correctly seated. Refit the pot stands.

Important: Wrong centralizing of the burner caps may result in a flash back and cause burners to melt and deform. This is considered a user fault and is not covered by the warranty.

Regular cleaning will extend the service life of your appliance and reduce problems.

• Switch off the electricity before cleaning the appliance to avoid electric shock.

• Allow the appliance to cool down before you clean it to avoid burns.

• The condition of the gas hose and valve must be inspected for leaks every time the gas bottle is re-filled.

• Clean the appliance thoroughly after each use. Use warm water with washing liquid, a soft cloth or sponge, and then wipe with a dry cloth.

• Always ensure any excess liquid is thoroughly wiped off after cleaning and any spillage is immediately wiped dry.

• Do not use cleaning agents that contain acid or chloride to clean stainless or inox surfaces.

To clean the gas hobs:

1. Remove and clean the saucepan carriers and burner caps.

2. Clean the hob.

3. Install the burner caps and make sure that they are seated correctly.

4. When installing the upper grills (saucepan carriers), pay attention to place them so that the burners are centered.

Glass Ceramic Surfaces:

• Wipe the glass ceramic surface using a piece of cloth dampened with cold water, so as not to leave any cleaning agent on it. Dry with a soft and dry cloth.

• Dried residues should not be scraped with hook blades, steel wool, or similar tools. Remove calcium stains (yellow stains) with a small amount of lime remover such as vinegar or lemon juice.

• If the surface is heavily soiled, apply a suitable cleaning agent on a sponge and wait until it is absorbed well. Then, clean the surface of the hob with a damp cloth.

• Sugar-based foods such as thick cream and syrup must be cleaned promptly without waiting for the surface to cool down. Otherwise, the glass ceramic surface may be permanently damaged.

Cleaning the control panel:

• Clean the control panel and knobs with a damp cloth and wipe them dry.

• Do not remove the control buttons/knobs to clean the control panel, as the panel may get damaged.

Every six months, the gas jets on your hob should be cleaned to ensure continued efficient and safe operation. This can be done using a Gas Jet Cleaning Kit.

1. Fit the T-bar to the socket from the kit. Remove the pot stands, burner caps, and burner bodies.

2. Insert the socket into the central tube of the burner so that it locates over the brass gas jet at the bottom of the tube.

3. Gently loosen the brass gas jet by turning the socket in an anti-clockwise direction.

4. Carefully lift the socket and loosened brass gas jet from the central burner tube.

5. Insert the ‘Classic pin’ from the kit into the central hole of the jet and slide it up and down until the jet is free of accumulated dirt.

6. Re-assemble in reverse order.

7. Clean all the burner jets in the manner described above.
