The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the user’s guide for your BROTHER DCP-L2600D:

Before using your BROTHER DCP-L2600D, please consider the following:

• Not all models are available in all countries.

• Before giving your machine to anyone else, replacing it, or disposing of it, we strongly recommend resetting it to its factory settings to remove all personal information.

• The screens or images in the User’s Guide are for illustration purposes only and may differ from those of the actual products.

• The contents of the document and the specifications of this product are subject to change without notice.

If your computer is protected by a firewall and you are unable to network print or scan, you may need to configure the firewall settings. If you are using the Windows Firewall and you installed the drivers using the steps in the installer, the necessary firewall settings have been already set. If you are using any other personal firewall software, refer to the user’s guide for your software or contact the software manufacturer.

The control panel of your BROTHER DCP-L2600D has several buttons with specific functions:

1. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD):

Displays messages to help you set up and use the machine. In Ready or Copy Mode, it shows:

• Type of copy

• Number of copies

• Quality

• Contrast

• Copy ratio

2. Menu Buttons:

• Menu: Press to access the menu for programming your machine’s settings.

• Clear: Press to delete entered data or cancel the current setting.

• OK: Press to store your machine’s settings.

• Up or Down Arrows (▲ or ▼): Press to scroll up or down through menus and options.

3. Function Buttons:

• Copy/Scan Options: Press to access temporary settings for scanning or copying.

• Wi-Fi (for wireless models): Press and hold to launch the wireless installer on your computer. The light indicates the wireless connection status.

• Scan: Press to switch the machine to Scan Mode.

• 2 in 1 (ID) Copy: Press to copy both sides of an identification card onto a single page.

• 2-sided (for certain models): Press to copy on both sides of a sheet of paper.

4. Stop/Exit:

• Press to stop an operation.

• Press to exit from a menu.

5. Start:

• Press to start copying.

• Press to start scanning documents.

6. Power On/Off (Power Button):

• Turn the machine on by pressing.

• Turn the machine off by pressing and holding. The LCD displays [Shutting Down] before turning off.

When text entry is required on your BROTHER DCP-L2600D, you can enter characters using the control panel buttons:

1. Hold down or repeatedly press the up or down arrow to select a character from the list: 0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ(space)!”#$%&'()*+,-./:;<=>?@[\]^_‘{|}~

2. Press OK when the character or symbol you want is displayed, and then enter the next character.

3. Press Clear to delete characters entered incorrectly.

To load paper into the standard paper tray of your BROTHER DCP-L2600D, follow these steps:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you are using. Press the green release levers to slide the guides.

3. Fan the stack of paper well to prevent jams.

4. Load paper in the paper tray with the printing surface facing down.

5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▼▼▼). Overfilling the paper tray can cause paper jams.

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the output tray.

When using preprinted paper for 2-sided printing on your BROTHER DCP-L2600D, you need to change the machine’s settings. First, ensure you orient the paper correctly in the tray:

• For 1-sided printing: face down, top edge towards the front of the paper tray.

• For automatic 2-sided printing: face up, bottom edge towards the front of the paper tray.

To change the settings:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Printer]. Press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [2-sided]. Press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Single Image]. Press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [2-sided Feed]. Press OK.

6. Press Stop/Exit.

To print on special media like plain paper, thin paper, recycled paper, or bond paper using the manual feed slot of your BROTHER DCP-L2600D, follow these instructions:

1. Lift the support flap on the output tray to prevent paper from sliding off.

2. Open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the paper you are using.

4. Using both hands, place one sheet of paper in the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up, until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in.

5. Send your print job to the machine. Change your print preferences in the Print screen as needed.

6. After the printed page comes out, load the next sheet of paper. Repeat for each page you want to print.

To print on thick paper or labels with your BROTHER DCP-L2600D, you must use the manual feed slot and the face-up output tray.

1. Open the machine’s back cover (the face-up output tray).

2. On the front of the machine, open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the paper.

4. Using both hands, place one sheet of paper in the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up, until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in.

5. Send your print job to the machine, ensuring you’ve selected the correct media type in your print preferences.

6. After the printed page comes out from the back of the machine, load the next sheet.

7. When finished, close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

Before loading, press the corners and sides of the envelopes to make them as flat as possible. Follow these steps to print envelopes on your BROTHER DCP-L2600D:

1. Open the machine’s back cover (the face-up output tray).

2. Pull down the two green levers as shown in the illustration (if your model has them).

3. On the front of the machine, open the manual feed slot cover.

4. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the envelope.

5. Using both hands, put one envelope in the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up, until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in.

6. Send your print job to the machine. In the Print dialog box, change your print preferences for envelopes (Paper Size: Com-10, DL, C5, Monarch; Media Type: Envelopes, Env. Thick, Env. Thin).

7. After the printed envelope comes out, put in the next envelope. Repeat for each envelope.

8. When you finish printing, return the two green levers to their original position.

9. Close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

When you change the size or type of paper in the tray, you must also update the settings on the BROTHER DCP-L2600D’s LCD.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [General Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Tray Setting] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Type] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Thin Paper], [Plain Paper], [Thick Paper], or [Recycled Paper] option, and then press OK.

6. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Size] option, and then press OK.

7. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the option you want, and then press OK.

8. Press Stop/Exit.

When the ‘Check Paper’ setting is On, a message appears on the LCD asking if you want to change the paper size and type when you pull the paper tray out. The default setting is On.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [General Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Tray Setting] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Check Paper] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [On] or [Off] option, and then press OK.

6. Press Stop/Exit.

To get the best print quality with your BROTHER DCP-L2600D, we recommend using the following paper types:

Use the scanner glass on your BROTHER DCP-L2600D to scan one page at a time. The supported document sizes are up to 300 mm in length, 215.9 mm in width, and 2kg in weight.

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Place the document on the scanner glass face down.

3. Place the corner of the page in the upper left corner of the scanner glass.

4. Close the document cover. If the document is thick, like a book, gently press on the document cover.

Always test paper samples before purchasing them to ensure desirable performance. Store paper in its original packaging, sealed, flat, and away from moisture, direct sunlight, and heat.

IMPORTANT: Some types of paper may not perform well or may cause damage to your machine. DO NOT use paper that is:

• Highly textured

• Extremely smooth or shiny

• Curled or warped

• Coated or has a chemical finish

• Damaged, creased, or folded

• Exceeds the recommended weight specification

• With tabs and staples

• Multipart or carbonless

• Designed for inkjet printing (this may cause a paper jam or damage your machine)

Damage caused by using these types of paper is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.

Follow these steps to print from a Windows application:

1. Load the correct paper in the paper tray.

2. In your application, select the print command.

3. Select “BROTHER DCP-L2600D” as the printer, and then click the printer’s properties or preferences button.

4. In the printer driver window, make your selections:

• Paper Size: Select your paper size from the drop-down list.

• Orientation: Select Portrait or Landscape.

• Copies: Enter the number of copies (1-999).

• Media Type: Select the type of paper you are using.

• Multiple Page: Select options for printing multiple pages on one sheet or one page on multiple sheets.

• 2-sided / Booklet: Select your 2-sided printing option.

5. Change any other printer settings if needed.

6. Click OK.

7. Complete your print operation in the application.

To perform 2-sided (duplex) printing from a Windows computer to your BROTHER DCP-L2600D, follow these steps:

1. Select the print command in your application.

2. Select your model’s name, and then click the printer’s properties or preferences button.

3. In the Orientation field, select Portrait or Landscape.

4. Click the 2-sided / Booklet drop-down list, and then select the 2-sided or 2-sided (Manual) option.

5. Click the 2-sided Settings button.

6. From the 2-sided Type menu, select one of the four available binding options for your chosen orientation (e.g., Long Edge (Left), Short Edge (Top)).

7. Select the Binding Offset checkbox if you want to specify an offset for binding.

8. Click OK.

9. Click OK again to complete your print operation. For automatic 2-sided printing, the job will complete. For manual 2-sided printing, follow the on-screen instructions to reinsert the paper.

To change print settings for all Windows applications, you must configure the printer driver properties:

1. Hold down the Windows key and press the ‘R’ key on your keyboard to launch the Run dialog box.

2. Type “control printers” in the Open: field and click OK.

3. Right-click your BROTHER DCP-L2600D’s icon, and then select Printer properties.

4. Click the General tab, and then click the Printing Preferences… or Preferences… button.

5. In the printer driver dialog box, select the print settings you want to use as default for all your Windows programs.

6. Click OK.

7. Close the printer properties dialog box.

To change the print settings for the type of document you want to print:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Printer] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Print Settings] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Graphics] or [Text] option, and then choose the option you want.

5. Press OK.

To cancel a print job currently in progress, press the Stop/Exit button on the control panel. To cancel multiple print jobs, press and hold Stop/Exit for four seconds.

If you are experiencing problems with print quality, you can print a test page by following these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Printer] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Test Print] option, and then press OK.

4. Press Start. The machine will print a Test Print page.

5. Press Stop/Exit.

To send scanned photos or graphics directly to your computer from the machine’s control panel:

1. Load your document on the scanner glass.

2. Press the (Scan) button.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [to PC] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Image] option, and then press OK.

5. If connected over a network, press ▲ or ▼ to select the destination computer.

6. Press OK.

7. To change scan settings for this document, press Copy/Scan Options, use the arrows to select an option like [Colour Setting], [Resolution], or [File Type], and then press OK. Skip this step to use default settings.

8. Press Start. The machine will begin scanning.

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Pull the jammed document out to the right. If the document rips or tears, be sure you remove any debris or scraps to prevent future jams.

3. Close the document cover.

4. Press Stop/Exit.

If you experience frequent paper jams, try these steps to prevent them:

• Always remove the remaining paper from the paper tray, fan the stack, and straighten it before adding new paper.

• Clean the paper pick-up rollers and the separator pad of the paper trays.

• Ensure paper is loaded correctly in the tray.

• Set the correct paper size and paper type on both the machine and your computer.

• Use recommended paper.

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Slowly pull out the jammed paper. Pulling the paper downwards with both hands may make it easier to remove.

3. Fan the stack of paper to prevent further jams, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size, and load the paper back into the tray.

4. Ensure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▼▼▼).

5. Put the paper tray firmly back into the machine.

1. Use both hands to open the scanner.

2. Remove the jammed paper.

3. Push the scanner down with both hands to close it.

WARNING: The machine’s internal parts will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them.

1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes for the internal fan to cool the hot parts inside.

2. Open the back cover.

3. Pull the blue tabs at the left and right sides towards you to release the fuser cover.

4. Use both hands to gently pull the jammed paper out of the machine.

5. Close the fuser cover.

6. Close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

WARNING: The machine’s internal parts will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them.

1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to allow the internal fan to cool the hot parts.

2. Open the front cover.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

4. Pull out the jammed paper slowly.

5. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

3. Push down the green lock lever and take the old toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

4. Unpack the new toner cartridge and remove its protective cover.

5. Hold the new toner cartridge by the handle and shake it from left to right several times to distribute the toner evenly.

6. Push the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until it locks into place.

7. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back again several times. Ensure the tab is returned to the home position (▲).

8. Reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

9. Close the front cover of the machine. Do not turn the machine off until it returns to Ready Mode.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

3. Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the old drum unit.

4. Unpack the new drum unit.

5. Push the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until it locks into place.

6. Reinsert the toner cartridge and new drum unit assembly back into the machine.

7. Close the front cover.

8. After installing the new drum unit, you must reset the drum counter.

After replacing the drum unit with a new one, you must reset the drum counter. Do not reset the counter unless you are replacing the drum unit.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and the cover is closed.

2. Press OK and the ▲ arrow key at the same time.

3. Press OK to select [Drum].

4. Press ▲ to reset the drum counter.

1. Press and hold the power button to turn the machine off.

2. Lift the document cover (1). Clean the white plastic surface (2) and the scanner glass (3) underneath it with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

3. Close the document cover.

4. Press the power button to turn the machine on.

If you have print quality problems, clean the corona wire:

1. Open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

3. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times.

4. Be sure to return the tab to the Home position (▲). The arrow on the tab must be aligned with the arrow on the drum unit.

5. Reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover of the machine.

If your printout has dots or repeating marks at 94 mm intervals, the drum surface may have foreign material on it. Follow these steps to clean it:

1. Make sure the machine is in Ready mode and print the Drum Dot Check Sheet:

a. Press Menu.

b. Press ▲ or ▼ to display [Print Reports], then press OK.

c. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Drum Dot Print], then press OK.

d. Press Start.

2. Press and hold the power button to turn the machine off. Open the front cover.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly. Push the green lock lever to take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

4. Turn the drum unit over. Make sure the drum unit gear is on the left side.

5. Use the numbered markers next to the drum roller to find the mark on the drum, corresponding to the column with the dot on your check sheet.

6. Turn the drum unit edge towards you while looking at the surface to find the mark.

7. Wipe the drum unit surface gently with a dry cotton swab until the mark or foreign material comes off. IMPORTANT: DO NOT touch the surface of the drum unit with anything other than the cotton swab.

8. Reinstall the toner cartridge into the drum unit, then reinstall the assembly into the machine.

9. Close the front cover and turn the machine on.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Machine Info.] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Parts Life] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Toner] or [Drum] option, and then press OK.

5. The LCD displays the approximate remaining toner or drum life.

6. Press Stop/Exit.

If you need to ship your machine, follow these steps to pack it safely:

1. Press and hold the power button to turn the machine off. Leave it off for at least 10 minutes to cool down.

2. Disconnect all cables and unplug the power cord from the electrical socket.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly. Place them in a plastic bag and seal it. Do not put this bag in the box with the machine, but pack it separately.

4. Remove the paper tray and any paper from the manual feed slot.

5. Put the machine into the bag it originally came in.

6. Pack the machine and the printed materials in the original carton with the original packing material.

7. Close the carton and tape it shut.

If you forget your password, you must reset your machine to its factory default settings. This will reset the password to the default password. The default password to manage the machine’s settings is located on the back of the machine and is marked “Pwd”.

You can reset some or all of your machine’s settings. Unplug any interface cables before performing a reset.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Initial Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Reset] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to choose the type of reset you want to perform (e.g., Machine Reset, Network Reset, All Settings, Factory Reset), and then press OK.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions. The machine will reboot to complete the reset process.

Note: Factory Reset resets all settings to the ones originally set at the factory and takes longer than other resets. We strongly recommend performing this operation when you dispose of the machine.
