When using your BREVILLE BKE420S kettle, please adhere to the following safety instructions:

• Carefully read all instructions before operation and save for future reference.

• Remove any packaging material and promotional stickers before using the kettle for the first time.

• This appliance is designed specifically for boiling quality drinking water only. Do not use it to boil any other liquids or foodstuffs.

• Do not place the kettle near the edge of a bench or table during operation. Ensure the surface is level, clean and free of water.

• Do not let the cord hang over the edge of a table or counter, touch hot surfaces or become knotted. Fully unwind the cord before use.

• Keep the kettle clear of walls, curtains and other heat or steam sensitive materials. A minimum distance of 200mm is required.

• Do not place the kettle on or near a gas burner, electric element or in or near a heated oven.

• To protect against electric shock, do not immerse the kettle base, switch area, power base, power supply cord or plug in water or allow moisture to come in contact with these parts.

• Always ensure the kettle switch is in the ‘off’ position, then turn the power off at the power outlet and remove the plug before moving the appliance, when not in use, and before cleaning or storing.

• Do not remove the kettle from the power base during operation. Ensure the kettle has switched to the ‘off’ position after boiling before removing it from the power base.

• Do not touch hot surfaces. Use the handle for lifting and carrying the kettle.

• This appliance is not intended for use by young children or infirm persons unless they have been adequately supervised by a responsible person to ensure they can use the appliance safely.

• Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with this appliance.

• It is recommended to regularly inspect the appliance. Do not use it if the power supply cord, plug or appliance becomes damaged in any way.

• Any maintenance other than cleaning should be performed at an authorised Breville Service Centre.

• This appliance is recommended for household use only. Do not use this appliance for other than its intended use. Do not use in moving vehicles or boats. Do not use outdoors.

• The installation of a residual current device (safety switch) is recommended for additional safety. A safety switch with a rated residual operating current not exceeding 30mA is advisable. See your electrician for professional advice.

• Do not operate the kettle on an inclined surface. Do not move the kettle while it is switched on.

Before using your BREVILLE BKE420S kettle for the first time, remove any packaging material or promotional stickers. It is recommended to fill the kettle to the maximum level with cold tap water, bring it to a boil, and then discard the water. Your kettle will only operate when positioned on the power base with the ON/OFF switch in the ON position. The kettle will automatically switch off once the water has boiled.

1. To fill the kettle with water, remove it from the power base and open the lid by pressing the lid release button. The lid will automatically open. Fill with the desired amount of water. Always fill the kettle between the maximum (MAX) and minimum (MIN) marks on the water window. Too little water will result in the kettle switching off early.

2. Ensure that the lid is closed and locked firmly into place. Place the kettle firmly onto the power base. Plug the power cord into the 230/240V power outlet and switch ‘ON’.

3. Press the ON/OFF switch down to the ‘ON’ position. The power ‘ON’ light will illuminate.

Note: Filling above the maximum mark may result in boiling water splashing from the kettle. Do not remove the kettle from the power base during operation. Ensure the kettle has switched to the ‘OFF’ position after the water has boiled before removing it from the power base.

The BREVILLE BKE420S kettle is fitted with 2 independent safety devices that protect against overheating if the appliance is operated with insufficient water. If this occurs, the kettle will stop heating. To reset it:

1. Switch ‘OFF’ at the power point and allow the kettle to cool.

2. Remove the kettle from the power base and add water.

3. Return it to the power base. The safety device will then automatically reset.

To clean the exterior of the BREVILLE BKE420S kettle, first switch off at the power outlet and unplug the appliance. The outside of the kettle may be wiped over with a damp cloth and polished with a soft dry cloth. Do not use chemicals, steel wool, or abrasive cleaners to clean the inside or outside of the kettle.

The BREVILLE BKE420S kettle features a removable mesh filter to remove scale deposits for cleaner water. To clean it:

1. Ensure the kettle is off and unplugged.

2. Remove the filter by opening the lid and sliding the filter up and out of the kettle.

3. The filter can be cleaned by running it under hot water and rubbing with a cleaning cloth or brush.

4. To replace the filter, simply slide it down into the slot behind the spout of the kettle.

Mineral deposits in tap water may cause the kettle interior and water gauge to discolour. This can be removed by using a proprietary kettle descaler available from most supermarkets, department stores, and hardware stores.

Alternatively, you can use a vinegar solution:

1. Fill the kettle until it is 2/3 full with 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water. Boil this solution and allow it to stand overnight.

2. Empty the solution from the kettle. Fill the kettle with clean water, bring it to a boil, and discard the water. Repeat this step, and the kettle will be ready for use.
