What is required for the firmware update?
The following is required for the firmware update:
• Computer (Windows operating system or Mac OS) with Internet access and USB connection
• Empty USB stick (FAT32- or exFAT-formatted)
Note: The BERNINA USB stick (special accessory) is intended for use with all BERNINA machines that have a USB port. It is already formatted for FAT32. Many other USB sticks may also work but there is no guarantee that any particular USB stick will work. BERNINA recommends deleting any data that is saved on the USB stick before updating, or transferring this data to a different storage medium.
How do I format the USB stick on a Windows computer?
To ensure that the USB stick works with the BERNINA machine, the USB stick must be formatted in the FAT32- or exFAT file system.
Note: During formatting, all files on the USB stick are irretrievably deleted.
> Insert the USB stick into a computer with Windows operating system.
> Open Windows Explorer.
> Right-click on the USB stick and select «Format» from the context menu.
> If «FAT32» or «exFAT» has already been selected under «File system», close the window. The USB stick is already formatted accordingly.
> If «FAT32» or «exFAT» has not already been selected under «File system», select it.
> To format the USB stick, click on the «Start» button.
– Once the formatting is complete, the message «Format Complete» appears.
How do I download the firmware?
Please note: The “X” in the sample files stands for the machine and the firmware version.
> Open the Internet browser and enter the support address.
> Click on the «Search support info for models» tab and select the required model.
> To download the file, click on the link «Firmware BERNINA XXX Vxx.xx.xx».
> Normally, the file is downloaded to the «Downloads» directory.
> Once the download is complete click on the «Open folder» button.
How do I unpack the firmware on a Windows Computer?
Prerequisite:
• The USB stick is formatted to FAT32 or exFAT and inserted into the computer.
> Right-click on the ZIP file «Firmware_BERNINA_XXX_Vxx.xx.xx.zip» and select «Extract All…» from the context menu.
> If a security warning is displayed, allow the unpacking to continue and do not cancel. Otherwise, the folder will not be unpacked.
> Click on the «Browse…» button and select the USB stick as the target folder. When doing so, ensure that the unpacked file is saved directly onto the top level of the USB stick.
> Check the box for «Show extracted files when complete» and click on the «Extract» button.
– The USB stick with file «.swu» opens.
> Eject and remove the USB stick.
How do I unpack the firmware on a Mac Computer?
Prerequisite:
• The USB stick is formatted to FAT32 or exFAT and inserted into the Mac Computer.
> Unzip ZIP file «Firmware_BERNINA_XXX_Vxx.xx.xx.zip» by double-clicking on it.
– The contents of the ZIP file will be copied to a folder.
> Drag the «.swu» file from the unzipped folder onto the USB stick.
> Eject and remove the USB stick.
How do I start the firmware update automatically?
Prerequisite:
• The machine is switched on.
> Insert the USB stick with the new firmware version into the machine.
– When the new firmware version is recognized on the USB stick, a message appears.
> Update the firmware according to the instructions on the screen.
Note: The update can takes several minutes. During the update, do not switch the machine off and do not remove the USB stick.
