Are there any special considerations for storing the WATSON-MARLOW 323S pump?
The WATSON-MARLOW 323S pump has an extended shelf life. However, after storage, care should be taken to ensure all parts function correctly. The pump contains a battery with an unused life of seven years. Long-term storage is not recommended for peristaltic pump tubing. Please observe the storage recommendations and use-by dates for any tubing you plan to use after storage.
How does the WATSON-MARLOW 323S peristaltic pump work?
The WATSON-MARLOW 323S is a peristaltic pump, which is the simplest type of pump with no valves, seals, or glands to clog or corrode. The fluid only contacts the bore of the tube, eliminating contamination risks.
Here is how it works:
1. A compressible tube is squeezed between a roller and a track, creating a seal.
2. As the roller moves along the tube, the seal advances. After the roller passes, the tube returns to its original shape, creating a partial vacuum that draws fluid from the inlet port.
3. Before the first roller reaches the end of the track, a second roller compresses the tube at the start, isolating a packet of fluid.
4. As the first roller leaves the track, the second roller continues to advance, pushing the fluid packet out through the discharge port. At the same time, a new vacuum is created behind the second roller, drawing in more fluid.
This process prevents backflow and siphoning, and the pump effectively seals the tube when it is inactive, eliminating the need for valves.

What are the best practices for installing the WATSON-MARLOW 323S pump?
For good pump installation practice and to promote long tube life, follow these recommendations:
• Position: Site the pump on a flat, horizontal, rigid surface, free from excessive vibration. Allow air to flow around the pump for heat dissipation and ensure the ambient temperature does not exceed 40C.
• Emergency disconnection: The mains plug is the disconnecting device. Do not position the pump where it is difficult to unplug. The STOP key on the keypad will always stop the pump, but a suitable local emergency stop device fitted into the mains supply is recommended.
• Valves: Peristaltic pumps are self-priming, so no valves are needed in inlet or discharge lines. Any valves in the process flow must be open before the pump operates. A pressure relief device is advised between the pump and any discharge side valve to protect against accidental operation with the valve closed.
• Tubing materials run-in advice: Sta-Pure and Marprene tubing are hard to compress when new. When using these materials, the pump should be run at a speed of 10 rpm or greater for the first 30 seconds. Running slower may cause the safety system to stop the pump and display an over-current error message.
What are the do’s and do not’s for operating the WATSON-MARLOW 323S pump?
Do:
• Observe precautions for reducing electrostatic charge, such as ESD protective workwear.
• Operate the pump on a flat horizontal surface with free airflow for cooling. Do not block air vents.
• Use only single phase mains electricity supplies.
• Keep delivery and suction tubes as short and direct as possible (ideally not shorter than 1m). Use bends with a large radius (at least four times the tubing diameter).
• Ensure connecting pipework and fittings are suitably rated for the predicted pressure.
• When pumping viscous fluids, use pipe runs with a bore several times larger than the pump tube.
• Ensure at least 1m of smooth bore flexible tubing is connected to the inlet and discharge ports to minimize pulsation, especially with viscous fluids or rigid pipework.
• Site the pump at or just below the fluid level to ensure flooded suction.
• Keep the pumphead track and moving parts clean.
• Run at slow speed when pumping viscous fluids.
• Recalibrate after changing pump tubes, fluid, or connecting pipework.
• When using Marprene or Bioprene continuous tubing, re-tension the tube after the first 30 minutes of running.
Do not:
• Do not stack pumps more than three high.
• Do not block air vents beneath the pump or at the rear.
