The brake test must be performed on a single-axle roller dynamometer. The maximum test speed must not exceed 6 km/h.

The brake test should be performed on a single-axle roller dynamometer with contra-rotating rollers. Contra-rotating means that the dynamometer rollers are driven forwards on one side and backwards on the opposite side. The forward rotating wheel is measured during the test, meaning two brake tests per axle must be performed. The maximum test speed must not exceed 6 km/h.

If no such test rig is available, follow these steps:

1. Drive the vehicle forwards onto the rollers.

2. Switch the engine off and wait for 2 seconds.

3. Carry out the front brake test.

4. Start the engine and wait for approximately 5 seconds until sufficient vacuum has been built up.

5. Drive the vehicle forwards until the rear wheels are positioned on the rollers.

6. Switch the engine off and wait for 2 seconds.

7. Carry out the rear brake test.

8. Start the engine and wait for approximately 5 seconds until sufficient vacuum has been built up.

If the brake pad warning lamp does not go out 3 seconds after the ignition is switched on, or it comes on during vehicle operation, the fault may be that the brake pads are worn, in which case you must check and renew the pads on the front and rear axles. Alternatively, there may be a wiring fault that requires diagnosis.

Every time after changing pads, depress the brake pedal firmly several times with the vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position. Always check the brake fluid level after changing brake pads.

New adjustment is only necessary after renewing handbrake cables and brake calipers.

1. Depending on the equipment version of the centre console, remove the cup holder, rear cover, or complete centre console.

2. Depress the foot brake hard at least three times.

3. Firmly pull on and then release the handbrake three times.

4. Below the first notch, the handbrake lever must return to its released position.

5. Tighten the adjusting nut until the lever on the brake caliper lifts off its stop.

6. The total distance to the stops on the left and right brake calipers must not exceed 1.5 mm.

7. Check that both wheels turn freely.

The brake system must be operating properly and free of leaks. Remove the bleeder valve at one of the front brake calipers, connect a pressure gauge (V.A.G 1310 A), and bleed. Apply pressure to the brake pedal until the gauge indicates a pressure of 50 bar. The pressure must not drop by more than 4 bar within the test period of 45 seconds. Renew the brake master cylinder if the drop in pressure exceeds this specification.

Only use new brake fluid conforming to US standard FMVSS 116 DOT 4. Brake fluid is poisonous and corrosive, so it must not come into contact with paintwork. It is also hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air and should be stored in air-tight containers. Wash away any spilt brake fluid using plenty of water.

Use brake filling and bleeding equipment (VAS 5234 or V.A.G 1869). The bleeding sequence is as follows:

1. Bleed the front left and front right brake calipers simultaneously.

2. Bleed the rear left and rear right brake calipers simultaneously.

Leave the bleeder valves open with the brake fluid hoses connected until brake fluid free from air bubbles flows out.
