How do I lubricate the UNION SPECIAL 56300VG?
Use a straight mineral oil with a Saybolt viscosity of 90 to 125 seconds at 100 degrees F. Before operating, fill the machine with oil at the plug screw. While filling, check the gauge. When the proper oil level is reached, the gauge needle will register on the black line marked FULL. Oil must be added when the gauge needle registers on the black line marked LOW. Do not overfill the machine.
What is the procedure for calibrating the oil gauge on the UNION SPECIAL 56300VG?
To recalibrate the oil gauge, follow these steps in sequence:
Step 1. Place the machine upright on a level surface.
Step 2. Remove the plug screw and tip the machine forward to drain all oil from the reservoir.
Step 3. Remove the lower crank chamber cover on the back of the machine.
Step 4. Fill the reservoir until the oil is even with the bottom of the knee press shaft bushing.
Step 5. Loosen the locknut and rotate the calibrating screw as required until the gauge needle registers on the black line marked LOW.
Step 6. Tighten the locknut, then replace the plug screw and the lower crank chamber cover.
Step 7. Fill the machine with oil until the gauge needle registers on the black line marked FULL.
How do I synchronize the looper and needle motions on the UNION SPECIAL 56300VG?
Insert the looper into the looper rocker, pushing it all the way down and tightening the screw against the flat on the shank of the looper. Turn the handwheel in the operating direction until the point of the looper, moving to the left, is even with the left side of the needle. Note the height of the eye of the needle with respect to the looper point. Turn the handwheel in the reverse direction until the point of the looper moving to the left is even with the left side of the needle. If the height of the eye of the needle with respect to the looper point is the same, the looper and needle motions are synchronized. A variation of .005 inch is allowable.
How is the needle bar height set on the UNION SPECIAL 56300VG?
The height of the needle is correct when the top of its eye is 1/64 inch below the underside of the looper, with the looper point flush with the left side of the needle. If adjustment is necessary, loosen the needle bar screw and move the needle bar up or down as required, then retighten the screw.
How can I change the stitch length on the UNION SPECIAL 56300VG?
Set the stitch to the required length by loosening the locknut on the end of the stitch regulating stud by 1/2 turn. It has a left hand thread. Turn the stitch adjusting screw located under the left end of the cloth plate. Turning the screw clockwise shortens the stitch, while turning it in a counterclockwise direction lengthens the stitch. Retighten the locknut securely. To prevent damage, the key screw must engage the U shaped key slot in the ferrule.
How do I set the presser bar height for the UNION SPECIAL 56300VG?
The height of the presser bar is set correctly if it is possible to remove the presser foot when the foot lifter lever is fully depressed. There should also be approximately 1/16 inch clearance between the lower surface of the presser bar connection and guide and the bottom surface of the head opening in the bed when the foot lifter lever is released and the presser foot is resting on the throat plate, with the feed dog down below the throat plate.
How do I adjust the presser foot pressure on the UNION SPECIAL 56300VG?
Adjust the presser spring regulating screw so that it exerts only enough pressure on the presser foot to feed the work uniformly when a slight tension is placed on the fabric. This is the knurled screw located directly behind the needle bar in the head of the machine. Turning it clockwise increases the pressure, while turning it counterclockwise decreases the pressure.
How do I align the mainshaft to the crankshaft on the UNION SPECIAL 56300VG?
Spot screws in the couplings must align with the spots on the looper drive crank and set screws must align with the flats on the crankshaft and mainshaft. The mainshaft must be positioned laterally with .045 inch clearance between the right side of its head and the bed casting. The looper drive crank must be positioned laterally with 1/32 inch clearance between it and the mainshaft. Once these settings are made, it is important that the couplings are tightened. Torque spot screws and set screws to 19 to 21 inch pounds.
