The TEXAS INSTRUMENTS TI-NSPIRE CX II handhelds perform calculations in one of three modes, depending on the specific model:

Numeric mode: Supports results in terms of floating point numbers, integers, and stacked fractions only.

Exact Arithmetic mode: Supports results in terms of floating point numbers, integers, stacked fractions, π, e, radicals, and other constants such as ln(5) and sin(2).

Before using your TEXAS INSTRUMENTS TI-NSPIRE CX II for the first time, you need to charge the battery.

Charging the Handheld

Using one of the following options, charge the battery for at least four hours to ensure optimum performance.

• Connect the handheld to a computer using a standard A to mini-B USB cable.

• Connect to a wall outlet using a TI wall adapter (sold separately).

• If in a classroom setting, place the handheld in a TI-Nspire™ CX Docking Station.

Turning On the Handheld for the First Time

After charging the battery, press the on key to turn on the handheld. A progress bar is displayed while the operating system loads. You will then be prompted to choose your preferences for language and font size.

Choosing a Language

1. Press the right arrow on the Touchpad to open the drop-down list.

2. Press the down arrow to scroll through the languages, and then press the center of the Touchpad or enter to select a language.

3. Press tab to highlight the OK button, and then press the center of the Touchpad or enter to save the language selection.

Choosing a Font Size

1. After selecting the language, the Handheld Setup screen appears. Press the right arrow to open the Font Size drop-down list.

2. Press the down arrow to highlight the font size, and then press the center of the Touchpad or enter to select it.

3. Press tab to highlight the OK button, and then press the center of the Touchpad or enter.

The Welcome! screen opens. Press enter to select OK and open the Home screen.

You can manage the power on your TEXAS INSTRUMENTS TI-NSPIRE CX II handheld to prolong battery life.

Turning the Handheld Off

To turn the handheld off, press ctrl then on. The settings and memory contents are retained.

Using Automatic Power Down™ (APD™)

To prolong battery life, the APD feature turns off the handheld after three minutes of inactivity. To turn the handheld back on, press on. To change the default setting, press on, then 5, then 3 to access the Handheld Setup screen where you can change the Power Standby setting.

Using Deep Sleep Mode

The handheld has a Deep Sleep feature to maximize battery life during extended storage. To put the handheld in Deep Sleep mode, press and hold down the blue reset button on the back of the handheld for at least 4 seconds. To wake the handheld from Deep Sleep mode, press on for at least 4 seconds or apply USB power.

Adjusting the Brightness of the Backlighting

The screen is backlit, and the brightness can be adjusted for different lighting conditions.

• Dimmer: Press and hold ctrl and tap – (minus).

• Brighter: Press and hold ctrl and tap + (plus).

Using the TI-Nspire™ Touchpad

You can use the Touchpad to navigate in two ways:

• Use it like a computer touchpad by moving your fingertip in a sliding motion on the center area to move the mouse pointer. Click or tap the center of the Touchpad to select an item.

• Press the arrow keys on the outside edge of the Touchpad to move the mouse pointer up, down, left, or right, and then click the center of the touchpad or press enter to complete an action.

The Home screen is the starting point for all activities. Press the on key to toggle between the Home screen and the current document. The main options are:

The Scratchpad lets you quickly evaluate math expressions and graph functions without affecting your open documents.

Opening and Closing the Scratchpad

• From the Home screen, press the Scratchpad key to open it.

• Press the Scratchpad key again to alternate between the Calculate and Graph pages.

• Press esc to close the Scratchpad.

Calculating with Scratchpad

1. On the Scratchpad Calculate page, enter a math expression on the entry line.

2. Press enter to evaluate the expression. The result appears on the right side of the page.

3. To force a decimal approximation, press ctrl + enter instead of enter.

Inserting Items from the Catalog

1. Press the catalog key (k) to open the Catalog.

2. The first tab lists all functions alphabetically. Press a letter key to jump to that section of the list.

3. Use the arrow keys to highlight an item and press enter to insert it.

4. You can also click the numbered tabs to list functions by category (math, symbols, templates, etc.).

Using an Expression Template

1. Press the template key (t) to open the Template palette.

2. Use the arrow keys to select a template (e.g., fraction, integral, matrix) and press enter.

3. The template appears on the entry line. Use the arrow keys to move between the entry fields and type a value or expression for each element.

4. Press enter to evaluate.

Managing the History

• Viewing: Press the up or down arrow keys to scroll through the history of expressions and results.

• Copying: Select an expression or result from the history and press enter to copy it to the entry line for editing or re-evaluation.

• Clearing: Press menu, select 1. Actions, then 5. Clear History. All expressions and results are removed, but variables retain their values.

Graphing a Relation

1. Press the Scratchpad key until the Scratchpad Graph page is open.

2. By default, the entry line is displayed for a function, f1(x)=. If the entry line is not shown, press ctrl + G.

3. To change the graph type (e.g., equation, parametric, polar), press menu > Graph Entry/Edit and select the desired type.

4. Type an expression for the relation.

5. Press enter to graph the relation. The entry line disappears. Press the up arrow to add another relation.

Exploring the Graph

• Trace a Plot: Press menu > Trace > Graph Trace. Use the left and right arrow keys to move along the plot. The coordinates are displayed. Type a number and press enter to jump to that x-value.

• Find Points of Interest: Press menu > Analyze Graph. Select a tool to find a zero, minimum, maximum, intersection, etc. Click the graph to set the lower and upper bounds for the search.

• View a Table of Values: Press menu > Table > Split-screen Table. A table of values corresponding to the plot is displayed. To hide the table, press menu > Table > Remove Table.

• Adjust Window/Zoom: Press menu > Window/Zoom to adjust the viewing area using options like Zoom – In, Zoom – Out, or Window Settings to manually enter axis values.

Saving or Clearing Scratchpad Contents

• Save: To save your work, press doc and select A. Save to Document. You can save the Calculate page, Graph page, or both to a new or existing document.

• Clear: To delete all work from the Scratchpad, press doc and select B. Clear Scratchpad.

All work on the TEXAS INSTRUMENTS TI-NSPIRE CX II is contained in documents, which can have multiple problems and pages.

Opening a Document

1. From the Home screen, select Browse (or press 2).

2. The file manager opens. Use the arrow keys to highlight a document or folder.

3. Press the center of the Touchpad or enter to open the selected item.

Creating a New Document

1. From the Home screen, select New (or press 1). You can also press ctrl + N.

2. A new document opens with a list of applications.

3. Use the arrow keys to highlight an application (e.g., Calculator, Graphs) and press enter to add it to the first page of the new document.

Saving Documents

1. Press doc to open the Documents menu, and then select File > Save. You can also press ctrl + S.

2. The Save As dialog box opens. The default folder is My Documents.

3. To save in a different or new folder:

• Use shift + tab and the arrow keys to navigate to the folder list.

• To create a new folder, press tab until the New Folder icon is highlighted and press enter. Type a name for the new folder and press enter.

4. Type a name for the document in the File Name field.

5. Click Save or navigate to the Save button and press enter.

You can add multiple pages and split a single page to use up to four applications simultaneously.

Adding a Page to a Problem

• Press ctrl + doc or ctrl + I to insert a new page. Select an application for the new page.

• Alternatively, from the Home screen, point to an application icon and click or tap. A new page with that application is added to the current problem.

Using Multiple Applications on a Page (Page Layout)

1. Press doc, then 5 (Page Layout).

2. Select a layout from the list (e.g., Layout 2 for a two-pane vertical layout).

3. The screen splits into panes. Bold lines indicate the active pane. Press ctrl + tab to move between panes.

4. In an empty pane, press menu and select an application to add.

Managing Problems and Pages

• Add a Problem: Press doc > 4. Insert > 1. Problem. This allows you to reuse variable names without conflict.

• View Pages (Page Sorter): Press ctrl + up arrow to open the Page Sorter. This shows all pages in a thumbnail view.

• Reorder Pages: In the Page Sorter, select a page thumbnail. Press and hold the center of the Touchpad until the grab cursor appears. Use the arrow keys to move the page to a new position and press enter.

• Copy and Paste Pages: In the Page Sorter, select a page and press ctrl + C to copy. Navigate to a new location and press ctrl + V to paste.

• Delete a Page: In the Page Sorter, select a page and press del.

Moving Through Pages

• Use ctrl + left arrow to go to the previous page.

• Use ctrl + right arrow to go to the next page.

My Documents is a file manager for organizing your work.

Browsing Files

1. Press on then 2 to open My Documents.

2. Use the up and down arrows to navigate files and folders.

3. To expand a folder, point to it and press ctrl + right arrow. To collapse, press ctrl + left arrow.

Renaming Folders or Documents

1. Highlight the item you want to rename.

2. Press menu then 2. The name will be highlighted.

3. Type a new name and press enter.

Creating Folders

From the My Documents screen, press menu then 1. Type a name for the new folder and press enter.

Deleting Documents and Folders

1. Highlight the item you want to delete.

2. Press del or press ctrl + menu and select 6. Delete.

3. A confirmation dialog box appears. Select Yes to confirm.

Recovering Deleted Documents

Most operations in My Documents can be undone. Press ctrl + Z (Undo) to cancel the last operation, which can restore a deleted document.

You can use images in applications like Graphs & Geometry, Data & Statistics, and Notes. You can copy, resize, reposition, and delete images that are already in a document. However, you cannot add or insert a new image file into a document directly from the handheld; you must transfer a document containing an image from your computer.

Copying an Image

1. Open the document with the image you want to copy.

2. Select the image. A border will appear around it.

3. Press ctrl + menu and click Copy, or press ctrl + C.

4. Open the destination document or page.

5. Press ctrl + V to paste the image.

Repositioning an Image

1. Select the image.

2. In Graphs & Geometry or Data & Statistics applications:

• Press and hold the center of the touchpad until the cursor changes to a four-sided arrow.

• Move your finger over the Touchpad to move the image. Press the center of the touchpad or enter to place the image.

Resizing an Image

1. Select the image.

2. Move the cursor to one of the corners. The cursor changes to a four-sided directional arrow.

3. Press the center of the touchpad.

4. Move your finger over the Touchpad to resize the image. A dashed line indicates the new size.

5. Press the center of the touchpad or enter to accept the new size.

Deleting an Image

1. Select the image.

2. Press ctrl + menu and then select Delete. In Notes, you can also press the del key.

Checking Battery Status

1. Press on to go to the Home screen.

2. Press 5 (Settings) then 4 (Status).

3. The Handheld Status dialog box opens, showing the battery percentage.

4. Alternatively, from any document, look for the battery icon at the top right of the screen. Hover over it to see the percentage.

Recharging the Handheld

To recharge the TI-Nspire™ Rechargeable Battery, connect it to one of the following power sources:

• A standard USB cable connected to a computer.

• A TI USB wall charger (sold separately).

• A TI-Nspire™ CX Docking Station (in a classroom setting).

Charging normally takes about six hours. The handheld can be used normally while it is charging.

You can customize various settings from the Settings menu on the Home screen.

Changing Handheld Setup Options (Font size, Power, etc.)

1. From the Home screen, press 5 (Settings) then 3 (Handheld Setup).

2. In the Handheld Setup dialog box, press tab to move between categories (Font Size, Power Standby, Hibernate, Pointer Speed, Auto Dim).

3. Press the right arrow to view options for a category.

4. Use the down arrow to highlight the desired setting and press enter to select it.

5. When finished, press tab until OK is highlighted, then press enter.

Changing Document Settings (Display Digits, Angle, Calculation Mode, etc.)

These settings control how information is displayed and interpreted in documents and the Scratchpad.

1. From an open document, press on > 5 > 2 (Settings > Document Settings).

2. Use tab to move through the list of settings.

3. Press the right arrow to open the drop-down list for a setting.

4. Use the arrow keys to highlight the desired option, then press enter to select it.

5. Click OK to apply the new settings to the open document and set them as the default for new documents.

Restoring Factory Defaults

1. From the Home screen, press 5 > 8 (Settings > Restore Factory Defaults).

2. The Restore Defaults dialog box opens.

3. Click OK to restore Document Settings, Graphs & Geometry Settings, and Handheld Setup to their original factory settings.

Follow these steps to replace the TI-Nspire™ Rechargeable Battery:

1. Use a small screwdriver to release the panel from the back of the handheld.

2. Remove the panel.

3. Remove the old battery.

4. Insert the new rechargeable battery into its compartment.

5. Replace the back panel and fasten it with a screwdriver.

Please follow these precautions when using and replacing rechargeable batteries:

• Do not expose batteries to temperatures above 140°F (60°C).

• Do not disassemble or mistreat batteries.

• Use only the charger recommended for the battery, or the one provided with the original equipment.

• Replace only with a TI approved battery.

• Remove the battery from the charger when not in use or being charged.

• Using the battery in other devices may result in personal injury or damage.

• Do not mix brands or types of batteries. There is a risk of explosion if a battery is replaced by the wrong type.

Disposing of Batteries

Do not mutilate, puncture, or dispose of batteries in fire. The batteries can burst or explode, releasing hazardous chemicals. Discard used batteries according to local regulations.

You can send documents, Operating System (OS) files, and folders between two handhelds using a mini-A to mini-B USB cable.

Connecting Two Handhelds

1. Firmly insert one end of the mini-USB cable into the USB port at the top of the sending handheld.

2. Insert the other end of the cable into the receiving handheld’s USB port.

Sending a Document or Folder

1. On the sending handheld, open the My Documents file browser (on key, then 2).

2. Use the arrow keys to highlight the file or folder you want to send.

3. Press doc > 1. File > 6. Send.

4. The file transfer begins. A progress bar shows the status. At the end of a successful transmission, a “transferred as” message is displayed.

Receiving a Document or Folder

No action is required by the user of the receiving handheld. The handheld automatically powers on when the cable is attached. At the end of the transfer, a “received” message is displayed.

Rules for Transferring Files:

• If a document with the same name already exists on the receiving unit, the new file will be renamed (e.g., MyData will become MyData(2)).

• Operating systems are not interchangeable between CAS and non-CAS handhelds.

• Transmissions will time out after 30 seconds.

You can update the OS using a computer with TI-Nspire™ software or by transferring the OS from another handheld.

Before You Begin:

• Ensure batteries are at least 25 percent charged. To check, go to Home > 5. Settings > 4. Status.

• OS upgrades do not delete user documents, but it is good practice to back up important files before updating.

Updating from a Computer

1. Download the latest OS file from the Texas Instruments website to your computer.

2. Open the TI-Nspire™ software and connect your handheld to the computer with a USB cable.

3. In the software, open the Content Explorer and select your handheld.

4. Go to Tools > Install Handheld/Lab Cradle OS.

5. The Select Handheld OS File dialog box opens. Browse to and select the OS file you downloaded (e.g., TI-Nspire.tco2).

6. Click Install OS and then click Yes to confirm. Do not disconnect the handheld during the installation.

7. When the download is complete, click OK. The handheld will reboot and install the new OS.

Transferring the OS from Another Handheld

1. Ensure any open documents on the receiving handheld are closed.

2. Connect the two handhelds with a USB cable.

3. On the sending handheld, go to the Home screen and select Browse.

4. Press menu, then select Send OS.

5. On the receiving handheld, a message will appear asking if you want to continue. Select Yes to receive the OS upgrade.

6. The upgrade will proceed. Do not unplug the cable during the transfer.

The following table describes common messages that can appear during an OS upgrade.

TI-Nspire™ CX II Connect is a web-based application for connecting your calculator to a computer (Chromebook, Windows, or Mac) to capture screens, transfer files, and update the OS.

Getting Started

1. Using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser, go to nspireconnect.ti.com.

2. If prompted, accept the terms and conditions.

3. After the “Let’s Get Started” page loads, connect your TEXAS INSTRUMENTS TI-NSPIRE CX II calculator to your computer with a USB cable.

4. Click CONNECT TO CALCULATOR.

5. In the popup window, click the name of your calculator and then click Connect.

Capturing the Calculator Screen

1. Navigate to the SCREEN CAPTURE page on the website.

2. Click the CAPTURE SCREEN button. The current calculator screen will be displayed.

3. You can click the copy button to copy the image to your clipboard or the download button to save it as a file.

Transferring Files

1. Navigate to the FILE TRANSFER page.

2. Click either CALCULATOR TO COMPUTER or COMPUTER TO CALCULATOR.

3. When prompted, click View files.

4. Select the .tns file(s) you want to transfer and click SEND FILE(S). Files are transferred to or from the Downloads folder on your computer.

Updating the OS

1. Navigate to the OS UPDATE page.

2. The application will check the OS version on your calculator. If a newer version is available, you will be prompted to update.

3. Click the UPDATE OS button. A confirmation message will appear when the update is finished.
