To operate the STIHL SR 430, you must be rested, in good physical condition, and in good mental health. If you have any condition that may be aggravated by strenuous work, you should check with your doctor before operating the power tool.

If you have a pacemaker: The ignition system of the STIHL SR 430 produces an electromagnetic field of very low intensity. This field may interfere with some pacemakers. To reduce health risks, it is recommended that persons with pacemakers consult their physician and the pacemaker manufacturer before operating this tool.

You must not operate the STIHL SR 430 if you are under the influence of any substance, such as drugs or alcohol, which might impair vision, dexterity, or judgment.

The STIHL SR 430 is suitable for applying fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides at ground level. Typical areas of application include fruit, vegetable, wine, and crop growing, as well as plantations, flower growing, grassland, and forestry.

Spraying overhead is possible with the STIHL SR 430 if it is equipped with a pressure pump. Only use plant protection products that are specifically approved for use in portable mistblowers.

Proper protective clothing and equipment must be worn when using, filling, and cleaning the STIHL SR 430:

Clothing must be snug-fitting but allow complete freedom of movement. For some chemicals, impermeable coveralls are necessary.

If spraying overhead, wear impermeable head covering.

To reduce the risk of eye injuries, wear close-fitting safety glasses in accordance with European Standard EN 166. Ensure they are a snug fit.

Wear a suitable respirator to protect against breathing plant control chemicals.

Wear personal sound protection, such as ear defenders.

Wear impermeable gloves resistant to plant control chemicals.

Wear impermeable safety boots with a non-slip sole resistant to plant protection products. Do not wear sandals or go barefoot.

Avoid clothing, scarves, neckties, or jewelry that could get into the air intake. Long hair must be tied up and confined above the shoulders.

When handling chemicals with the STIHL SR 430, follow these safety guidelines:

Read the user manual supplied with the plant protection chemical prior to use.

Mixing of the spray solution should be done strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Incorrect mixtures may produce toxic fumes or explosive solutions.

Never spray liquid plant control chemicals undiluted.

Mix the solution outdoors only or in well-ventilated locations.

Only prepare sufficient solution for the job on hand so that nothing is left over.

Do not mix different plant protection products unless the mixture is approved by the manufacturer.

Follow these steps to fill the container of the STIHL SR 430:

Step 1. Fill the container outdoors only or in well-ventilated locations.

Step 2. Stand the STIHL SR 430 on a level surface. Do not fill the container above the maximum mark (14 liters).

Step 3. To reduce the risk of injury, do not fill the power tool while wearing it on your back.

Step 4. Before filling, close the valve lever.

Step 5. When filling from a central water supply, do not immerse the end of the hose in the solution to prevent the solution from being sucked back into the water supply.

Step 6. After filling, fit the filler cap and tighten it down firmly.

Step 7. Before filling with spray solution, carry out a test run with fresh water to check all parts for leaks.

To reduce the risk of damage to the environment and plants, do not operate the STIHL SR 430:

In windy conditions.

At temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius in the shade.

In direct sunlight.

Never operate the tool with flammable liquids, viscous or sticky liquids, caustic or corrosive chemicals, or liquids hotter than 50 degrees Celsius.

When storing the STIHL SR 430, observe the following:

During work breaks, do not leave the tool in the hot sun or near any heat source.

Do not store spray solution in the container for longer than one day.

Store and transport chemicals only in approved containers. Never use containers intended for food, drinks, or animal feed.

Keep chemicals out of reach of children and animals.

Store the STIHL SR 430 empty and clean in a dry place protected from frost and secured against unauthorized use.

Refueling the STIHL SR 430 requires extreme caution as gasoline is highly flammable:

Always shut off the engine before refueling and do not fuel a hot engine.

Always remove the power tool from your back and put it on the ground before refueling.

Fuel the unit only when it is standing securely on the ground.

Open the fuel cap carefully to allow any pressure buildup to release slowly and avoid spillage.

Only refuel in a well-ventilated place. If fuel is spilled, clean the machine immediately. If fuel splashes on your clothes, change them at once.

After fueling, tighten the screw-type fuel cap as securely as possible to reduce the risk of it loosening from engine vibrations.

Check that the STIHL SR 430 is properly assembled and in good condition:

Check the fuel system for leaks, especially the fuel cap, hose connections, and manual fuel pump.

The setting lever must move easily to STOP or 0.

The throttle trigger must move freely and spring back to the idle position.

Check that the spark plug boot is secure; a loose boot may cause sparking that could ignite fumes.

Check the condition and tightness of the container, hose, and metering unit.

Check the condition of the harness straps and replace them if they are damaged or worn.

To start the STIHL SR 430:

Step 1. Start the engine at least 3 meters from the fueling spot, outdoors only.

Step 2. Place the machine on level ground and ensure you have secure footing.

Step 3. Ensure the setting lever is on the run position (I).

Step 4. Press the manual fuel pump bulb at least five times, even if it is already filled with fuel.

Step 5. For a cold engine start, press in the choke knob and turn it to the cold start symbol. For a warm engine start, press in the choke knob and turn it to the warm start symbol.

Step 6. Hold the unit with your left hand on the housing and put one foot against the base plate.

Step 7. Pull the starter grip slowly with your right hand until it engages, then give it a brisk strong pull. Do not pull the rope to its full length.

Step 8. Once the engine runs, pull the throttle trigger to automatically return the choke knob to the run position.

Carry the STIHL SR 430 on your back with both harness straps; do not hang it over one shoulder. Hold and control the blower tube with your right hand on the control handle, even if you are left-handed.

Work slowly, moving in a forward direction. Always observe the discharge area of the blower tube and do not move backward to avoid the risk of tripping. Keep the power tool and container upright and do not bend forward to avoid chemical leakage.

After completing work with the STIHL SR 430:

Step 1. Close the valve lever.

Step 2. Always shut off the engine before taking the tool off your back.

Step 3. Put the tool down on a level, non-flammable surface. Do not place it near flammable materials like dry grass or wood chips.

Step 4. Drain and clean the solution container and hose system with clear water.

Step 5. Check all parts for leaks.

Step 6. Wash your hands, face, and clothes thoroughly.

Step 7. Keep other persons and animals away from sprayed areas until the chemical has dried.

Follow these steps for the STIHL SR 430:

Step 1. Push the wide hose clamp, with marks facing right, onto the blower tube.

Step 2. Push the ring seal (wide lip facing left) onto the stub on the blower tube.

Step 3. Push the pleated hose over the ring seal.

Step 4. Push the hose clamp onto the pleated hose.

Step 5. Line up the marks on the hose clamp and the blower tube.

Step 6. Secure the hose clamp with the screw. The blower tube must still be able to rotate.

Follow these steps for the STIHL SR 430:

Step 1. Push the narrow hose clamp, with marks facing left, onto the elbow.

Step 2. Push the pleated hose onto the elbow.

Step 3. Push the hose clamp onto the pleated hose.

Step 4. Line up the marks on the hose clamp and the elbow.

Step 5. Secure the hose clamp with the screw.

Adjustment should only be done when the STIHL SR 430 is completely and properly assembled:

Step 1. Set the throttle trigger to the full throttle position as far as the stop.

Step 2. Carefully rotate the screw in the throttle trigger in the direction of the arrow until you feel initial resistance.

Step 3. Rotate the screw another full turn.

To adjust the harness of the STIHL SR 430, pull the ends of the straps downwards until the backplate fits snugly and securely against your back.

To loosen the harness, lift the tabs of the sliding adjusters.

The STIHL SR 430 requires a mixture of high-quality gasoline and two-stroke engine oil. The recommended mixing ratio is 1:50 (1 part oil to 50 parts gasoline) when using STIHL two-stroke engine oil. If using other high-performance oils, ensure they are classified as JASO FB, FC, FD, or ISO-L-EGB, EGC, or EGD.

The following table provides mixing examples for a 1:50 ratio:

For the STIHL SR 430, use high-quality gasoline with an octane rating of at least 90 ROC. Gasoline with an alcohol component exceeding 10 percent can cause impaired engine performance in engines with manually adjustable carburetors. For engine oil, STIHL specifies STIHL HP Ultra or an equivalent high-performance oil to maintain emission limits over the machine’s life.

Fuel mixture for the STIHL SR 430 deteriorates with age. Mix only as much as needed for a few weeks and do not store it for longer than 30 days. Store fuel in approved safety canisters in a dry, cool, and secure place protected from light and sunlight. STIHL MotoMix can be stored for up to 5 years without problems.

The setting lever on the STIHL SR 430 control handle has several positions:

Run position (I): The engine runs or is ready to start. The throttle trigger can be moved to any position.

Stop position (0): Ignition is interrupted and the engine stops. The lever springs back to the run position after being moved to 0.

Throttle trigger limiter (if equipped): Limits the travel of the throttle trigger in two stages (typically 1/3 and 2/3 throttle).

Throttle lock (if equipped): Allows the throttle trigger to be locked in any required position.

To stop the engine of the STIHL SR 430, move the setting lever in the direction of the 0 position. The engine will stop, and the setting lever will spring back to the on (run) position.

If the engine of the STIHL SR 430 does not start, check the following:

Ensure all settings (choke, setting lever) are correct.

Check for fuel in the tank and refuel if necessary.

Check that the spark plug boot is properly connected.

If the fuel tank was run until dry, press the manual fuel pump bulb at least five times after refueling.

Repeat the starting procedure. If it still won’t start, the engine may be flooded; check the spark plug.

For ground crops, multiply the length of the field by its width to find the square meters. For high-growing plants, calculate the area by measuring the length of the rows and the average height of the foliage, then multiply by the number of rows (and by two if treating both sides).

To obtain the area in hectares (ha), divide the number of square meters by 10,000. For example, a field 120m long by 30m wide is 3,600 square meters, or 0.36 ha.

Carry out a trial run with the STIHL SR 430 fueled and the container filled with water. Determine the distance walked in one minute while swinging the spray tube back and forth. For example, if you cover 10 meters in one minute, your walking speed is 10 meters per minute (m/min).

The valve lever (1) on the STIHL SR 430 starts and stops the solution feed:

Position A (vertical, up): The valve is open, and solution feed is active.

Position B (horizontal, down): The valve is closed, and solution feed is stopped.

The STIHL SR 430 can be used with different dosage pieces to allow for various discharge rates:

Standard dosage piece (A): Features positions 1 to 6.

Pressure pump dosage piece (B): Features positions 1 to 2.3 (available as a special accessory).

ULV (Ultra Low Volume) dosage piece (C): Features positions 0.5 to 0.8 (available as a special accessory).

To change the dosage piece on the STIHL SR 430:

Step 1. Pull the existing dosage piece up and out of its seat.

Step 2. Push the new dosage piece into its seat as far as it will go.

The discharge rate (liters per minute) for the STIHL SR 430 depends on the dosage piece setting and the spray tube angle:

Follow these steps to check the flow rate of the STIHL SR 430:

Step 1. Place the machine on the ground and fill the container with water up to the 10-liter mark.

Step 2. Set the standard dosage piece to position 6.

Step 3. Start the engine and hold the blower tube horizontally.

Step 4. Run at full throttle and spray until the water reaches the 5-liter mark. Note the time taken.

The time required to spray 5 liters of fluid should be between 110 and 150 seconds. If it takes longer, check for contamination in the hoses or dosage piece.

To remove the nozzle on the STIHL SR 430:

Step 1. Insert a screwdriver into the tab of the hose clamp on the control handle.

Step 2. Turn the screwdriver clockwise to loosen the clamp and pull the hose off the stub.

Step 3. Rotate the nozzle until the lugs are covered.

Step 4. Pull the nozzle off the blower tube.

The STIHL SR 430 can use different baffle screens to alter the spray shape:

Without deflector screen: Used for long distances and high plants.

Fan jet baffle screen: Broadens and softens the spray for close-range plants (under 1.5m).

45 degree deflector screen: Diverts the jet for under-leaf treatment or treating low-growing crops.

Dual deflector screen: Splits the spray jet in two directions to treat two rows simultaneously.

To clean the STIHL SR 430 after work:

Step 1. Close the valve lever and shut off the engine.

Step 2. Turn the dosage piece to position 6 or E and collect remaining solution in a suitable container.

Step 3. Rinse the container and hose system with clear water.

Step 4. Dispose of rinsing liquid according to local environmental regulations.

Step 5. If the strainer is dirty, remove it using a screwdriver in the recesses and clean it with clear water and a brush.

Step 6. Allow the machine to dry with the cap removed.

For long-term storage of the STIHL SR 430:

Step 1. Drain and clean the fuel tank in a well-ventilated area.

Step 2. Dispose of fuel properly.

Step 3. Press the manual fuel pump at least 5 times.

Step 4. Start the engine and run it at idling speed until it stops to clear the carburetor.

Step 5. Thoroughly clean the machine, cylinder fins, and air filter.

Step 6. Do not expose the solution container to direct sunlight for long periods, as UV rays can make the material brittle.

To replace the air filter of the STIHL SR 430 if there is a loss of engine power:

Step 1. Turn the choke knob to the cold start position.

Step 2. Loosen the screws and remove the filter cover.

Step 3. Remove the filter element.

Step 4. Replace the dirty filter with a new one and fit it into the housing.

Step 5. Reinstall the filter cover and tighten the screws.

The STIHL SR 430 carburetor is factory-set for optimum fuel-air mixture. If adjustment is needed:

High speed screw (H): Turn counterclockwise as far as stop (no more than 3/4 turn).

Low speed screw (L): Turn clockwise as far as stop, then turn it back 3/4 turn.

Idle speed screw (LA): If the engine stops while idling, turn LA slowly clockwise until the engine runs smoothly.

For the STIHL SR 430, fit a new spark plug after about 100 operating hours. Use only suppressed spark plugs of the type approved by STIHL (NGK BPMR 7 A or Bosch WSR 6 F). The electrode gap should be 0.5 mm. Ensure the adapter nut is properly tightened to prevent arcing.

The STIHL SR 430 has the following blowing capacities:

Air speed: 90 m/s

Maximum air flow rate without blower tube: 1300 cubic meters per hour

Air throughput with nozzle: 920 cubic meters per hour

The STIHL SR 430 has an unfilled weight of 12.2 kg. The maximum operating weight when fueled and filled with solution is 27.5 kg. The fuel tank capacity is 1700 cubic centimeters (1.7 liters), and the solution container capacity is 14 liters.

The following maintenance schedule applies to the STIHL SR 430 for normal operating conditions:

Before starting work: Visual inspection of the complete machine for leaks; test control handle function; check fuel system for leaks.

At the end of work/daily: Clean the machine; check the air intake port for cooling air.

Weekly: Clean the fuel tank.

Monthly: Check the spark plug; clean or replace the air filter.

Annually: Have the fuel pickup body replaced by a dealer.

Every 100 hours: Replace the spark plug.

Improper disposal of the STIHL SR 430 can be harmful to health and the environment. Take STIHL products, including packaging, to a suitable collection point for recycling in accordance with local regulations. Do not dispose of the unit with domestic waste.
