What can I do with the BLUETOOTH function on the WH-H900N headset?

The headset uses BLUETOOTH® wireless technology, allowing you to:

Listening to music: You can receive audio signals from a smartphone or music player to enjoy music wirelessly.

Talking on the phone: You can make and receive calls hands-free, while leaving your smartphone or mobile phone in your bag or pocket.


What voice guidance messages does the headset provide?

You hear the following voice guidance messages via the headset in these situations:

When powering on: “Power on”

When powering off: “Power off”

When entering pairing mode: “BLUETOOTH pairing”

When establishing a BLUETOOTH connection: “BLUETOOTH connected”

When disconnecting a BLUETOOTH connection: “BLUETOOTH disconnected”

When checking the remaining battery charge: “Battery level high” / “Battery level medium” / “Battery level low”

When automatically turning off due to the low battery condition: “Please recharge headset”

When turning on the noise canceling function: “Noise canceling”

When turning on the Ambient Sound Mode: “Ambient sound”

How do I fold the headset?

You can fold the headset from either the right side or left side by rotating the earcup inwards.

What are the parts of the headset and their functions?

1. L mark: Indicates the left side.

2. Slider: Slide to adjust the length of the headband.

3. Left unit

4. Built-in antenna: A BLUETOOTH antenna is built into the headset.

5. N-mark: Used for NFC connection.

6. Headband

7. R mark: Indicates the right side.

8. Right unit

9. Tactile dot: The left unit has a tactile dot for identification.

10. Touch sensor control panel: Located on the right unit for controlling playback and calls.

11. (power) button: Press and hold to turn the headset on or off.

12. Indicator (blue/red): Lights up in red or blue to indicate the power or communication status of the headset. Lights up in red during charging.

13. NC/AMBIENT (noise canceling/Ambient Sound Mode) button: Press to cycle through noise canceling, Ambient Sound Mode, and off.

14. Indicator (green/yellow): Green shows the noise canceling status. Yellow shows the Ambient Sound Mode status.

15. Micro-USB port: Connect a computer to this port with the supplied micro-USB cable to charge the headset.

16. INPUT jack: Connect a music player, etc. to this jack by using the supplied headphone cable. Make sure that you insert the plug of the music player until it clicks. Otherwise, you may not hear the sound normally.

17. Microphone: Picks up the sound of your voice (when talking on the phone) and noise (when using the noise canceling function). Use both microphones of the left and right units when talking on the phone.


What do the indicator lights mean?

The indicators show various statuses: (Blue: , Red: , Green: , Yellow: , Off: -)

Indicator (blue/red) next to the power button:

Turning on: (flashes blue two times)

Turning off: (lights blue for about two seconds then turns off)

BLUETOOTH status indication:

Pairing mode: – (blue and red flash alternately)

Not connected: – – (blue flashes at about one-second intervals)

Connection process completed: (blue flashes quickly for about five seconds)

Connected: – – – (blue flashes at about five-second intervals)

Incoming call: (blue flashes rapidly)

Remaining battery charge indication (when powered on):

Hint: When the remaining battery charge becomes low, the power indicator turns from blue to red, except during pairing mode.


How do I charge the headset?

The headset contains a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Charge the headset using the supplied micro-USB cable.

1. Connect the supplied micro-USB cable to the headset’s micro-USB port.

2. Connect the other end of the micro-USB cable to a booted computer.

The indicator (red) of the headset lights up.

Charging is completed in about 6 hours (*) and the indicator (red) goes off automatically.

* Time required for charging the empty battery to its full capacity. The time may be different depending on the conditions of use.

After charging is complete, disconnect the micro-USB cable.

Hints:

You can use the headset by connecting the supplied headphone cable, even while charging the headset.

If charging starts while the headset is turned on, the headset will turn off automatically.

Notes:

If the headset is not used for a long time, the battery may be quickly depleted, however, after a few recharges, the battery life will improve.

If you store the headset for a long time, charge the battery to its full capacity once every 6 months to avoid over-discharge.

If the headset is not used for a long time, it may take longer to charge the battery.

If the computer enters hibernation mode while connected, charging will not complete properly. Check computer settings. The indicator (red) will go off if the computer enters hibernation. Charge again.

The headset cannot be operated (turning on, pairing, etc.) while charging or if kept connected after charging.

The noise canceling function cannot be used while charging or if kept connected after charging.

If the headset detects a problem (e.g., temperature outside 5 °C – 35 °C or battery issue), the indicator (red) may turn off. Charge again within the temperature range. If problems persist, consult your dealer.

If the headset isn’t used for a long time, the indicator (red) might not light up immediately. Wait a few minutes without disconnecting the cable.

If battery life drops significantly, it should be replaced. Consult your dealer.

Avoid exposure to extremes (temperature, sunlight, moisture, sand, dust, shock). Don’t leave it in a parked car.

Use only the supplied micro-USB cable and connect directly to a computer. Charging via a USB hub may not complete properly.


What is the available operating time?

The available operating times on a fully-charged battery are as follows:

How can I check the remaining battery charge?

You can check the remaining battery charge of the rechargeable battery.

Using the button and indicator:

When you turn on the headset or press the power button while the headset is on, the indicator (blue) flashes two times, then the indicator (red) flashes to indicate the remaining charge:

3 times (Red flash): High

2 times (Red flash): Medium

1 time (Red flash): Low (needs to charge)

Using voice guidance:

You also hear voice guidance of the remaining battery charge when turning on or pressing the power button:

“Battery level high”

“Battery level medium”

“Battery level low”

When the battery is almost empty:

The indicator turns red. When the battery becomes empty, the headset sounds a warning beep, you hear voice guidance “Please recharge headset”, and the headset turns off automatically.

Using an iPhone or iPod touch:

When the headset is connected to an iPhone or iPod touch (iOS 5.0 or later) that supports HFP (Hands-free Profile), it will show an icon on the screen that indicates the remaining battery charge of the headset.

The icon represents the following levels:

B: 100% to 70%

C: 70% to 50%

D: 50% to 20%

E: 20% or lower (needs to charge)

Note: If you connect the headset to an iPhone or iPod touch with “Media audio” (A2DP) only in a multi-point connection, the remaining battery charge will not be displayed correctly.

Hint: You can also check the remaining battery charge with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app. Android smartphones and iPhone/iPod touch support this app.


What are the system requirements for charging the headset using USB?

The headset should be charged before first use. A Personal Computer with a pre-installed compatible operating system and a USB port is required:

How do I turn on the headset?

Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds until the indicator (blue) flashes. You will hear the voice guidance “Power on”.

How do I turn off the headset?

Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds until the indicator (blue) turns off. You will hear the voice guidance “Power off”.

How do I make a wireless connection to BLUETOOTH devices?

You can enjoy music and hands-free calling wirelessly using your device’s BLUETOOTH function.

Device registration (pairing):

When using the BLUETOOTH function for the first time, you must pair the devices. If your device supports NFC, you can simply touch the devices together. If not, you need to perform manual pairing.

Connecting the headset to a registered (paired) device:

Once paired, you don’t need to pair again unless pairing information is deleted. Connect using the appropriate method for your device (NFC or manual connection).


How do I connect the headset using One-touch connection (NFC) with an Android smartphone (Android 4.1 or later)?

By touching the headset with an NFC-compatible smartphone (Android 4.1 or later), the headset turns on automatically, pairs, and establishes a BLUETOOTH connection.

1. Unlock the screen of the smartphone if it is locked.

2. Enable the NFC function on your smartphone. Typically found under [Setting] – [More] or similar connection settings.

3. Touch the smartphone to the N-Mark on the left unit of the headset. Keep touching until the smartphone reacts.

Refer to your smartphone’s operating instructions for the designated NFC touch location.

4. Follow any on-screen instructions to complete the pairing and connection.

When connected, the blue indicator on the headset starts flashing slowly, and you hear voice guidance “BLUETOOTH connected”.

To disconnect: Touch the smartphone to the N-Mark again.

To connect a paired smartphone: Perform step 3 again.

Hints:

If connection fails, unlock the screen and move the smartphone slowly over the N-Mark. Remove any case from the smartphone.

Touching an NFC smartphone to the headset while it’s connected to another device will switch the connection to the touched smartphone (One-touch connection switching).


How do I disconnect the smartphone using one touch (NFC)?

You can disconnect the headset from the connected smartphone by touching the headset with it.

1. Unlock the screen of the smartphone if it is locked.

2. Touch the smartphone on the N-Mark of the headset. You hear voice guidance “BLUETOOTH disconnected”.

Note: After disconnection, if no operation is performed for about 5 minutes, the headset turns off automatically. To turn it off sooner, press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds (“Power off” voice guidance).


How does switching devices by one touch (NFC) work?

When the headset is connected with a BLUETOOTH device, if you touch an NFC-compatible smartphone on the headset, the headset connects with the smartphone that touched it most recently (One-touch connection switching). However, you cannot switch if you are currently talking on a BLUETOOTH mobile phone connected to the headset.

When the headset is connected with an NFC-compatible smartphone, if you touch that smartphone to another NFC-compatible BLUETOOTH headset or speaker, the smartphone disconnects from the current headset and connects to the other device it touched.

Note: Unlock the screen of the smartphone if it is locked before touching.


How do I pair and connect the headset with an Android smartphone manually (without NFC)?

Before starting:

Ensure the smartphone is within 1 m (3 feet).

Ensure the headset is sufficiently charged.

Have the smartphone’s operating instructions available.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset:

If pairing for the first time or after initialization, turn on the headset; it enters pairing mode automatically.

To pair a second or subsequent device, turn off the headset, then press and hold the power button for about 7 seconds. Release the button when the indicator flashes blue and red alternately. You hear voice guidance “BLUETOOTH pairing”.

2. Unlock the screen of the Android smartphone if it is locked.

3. Search for the headset on the smartphone:

Go to [Setting] – [Bluetooth].

Turn on the BLUETOOTH function if it’s off.

4. Touch [WH-H900N (h.ear)] from the list of available devices.

If passkey input is required, enter “0000”.

The headset and smartphone will pair and connect. You hear voice guidance “BLUETOOTH connected”.

If connection fails, see “Connecting to a paired Android smartphone”. If [WH-H900N (h.ear)] doesn’t appear, retry from step 1.

Note: Pairing mode cancels after about 5 minutes if not completed. The headset can pair with up to 8 devices. Pairing a 9th device replaces the oldest pairing. If pairing info is deleted or the headset is initialized, re-pairing is necessary.


How do I connect to a previously paired Android smartphone?

1. Unlock the screen of the Android smartphone if it is locked.

2. Turn on the headset by pressing and holding the power button for about 2 seconds. The indicator (blue) flashes. You hear “Power on”.

If the headset automatically connects to the last connected device, you hear “BLUETOOTH connected”. Check the connection status on the smartphone.

If not automatically connected, proceed to step 3.

3. Display paired devices on the smartphone:

Go to [Setting] – [Bluetooth].

Ensure the BLUETOOTH function is on.

4. Touch [WH-H900N (h.ear)] from the list of paired devices.

You hear voice guidance “BLUETOOTH connected”.

Hint: If the smartphone was connected last time, an HFP/HSP connection is made on power-up. Double-tap the center of the right touch sensor control panel lightly (about 0.4-second interval) to make an A2DP connection (music playback).

Note: If the last connected device is nearby, the headset might connect automatically. If unwanted, turn off Bluetooth on that device or power it off. If connection fails, ensure pairing exists on the smartphone and try pairing again.


How do I pair and connect the headset with an iPhone?

Before starting:

Ensure the iPhone is within 1 m (3 feet).

Ensure the headset is sufficiently charged.

Have the iPhone’s operating instructions available.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset:

If pairing for the first time or after initialization, turn on the headset; it enters pairing mode automatically.

To pair a second or subsequent device, turn off the headset, then press and hold the power button for about 7 seconds. Release the button when the indicator flashes blue and red alternately. You hear voice guidance “BLUETOOTH pairing”.

3. Select the BLUETOOTH setting on the iPhone:

1. Resume computer from sleep mode.

2. Turn on the headset (press power button for 2 secs). Indicator (blue) flashes. Hear “Power on”. If it connects automatically, hear “BLUETOOTH connected”. Check connection on computer. If not connected, proceed to step 3.

3. Select the headset using the computer:

Right-click the volume icon on the Windows toolbar, click [Playback devices].

Right-click [WH-H900N (h.ear)]. (If not shown, right-click Sound screen, select [Show Disabled Devices]).

Click [Connect].

Connection is established.

Hint: If connected last time, double-tap right touch sensor center for A2DP (music playback).

Note: Low sound quality means A2DP function might not be available on computer. Auto-connection might occur if last device is near. If connection fails, try pairing again.


How do I pair and connect with a computer (Windows 8/Windows 8.1)?

Before starting:

Ensure computer has BLUETOOTH supporting music playback (A2DP).

Computer is within 1 m (3 feet).

Headset is charged.

Have computer’s instructions.

Turn on the computer’s built-in BLUETOOTH adapter if necessary.

1. Enter pairing mode on the headset: Press and hold power button for 7 seconds until indicator flashes blue/red. Hear “BLUETOOTH pairing”.

2. Resume computer from sleep mode.

3. Register the headset:

Move mouse pointer to top-right (or swipe from right edge), select [Settings] from Charm Bar.

2. Resume computer from sleep mode.

3. Search for the headset:

Click the [Start] button, then [Devices and Printers].

Click [Add a device].

Select [WH-H900N (h.ear)], then click [Next].

What should I do if the headset does not turn on?

Charge the battery.

The headset cannot be turned on while charging the battery.


What should I do if charging cannot be done?

Check that the micro-USB cable is connected firmly to the headset and the computer.

Check that the computer is turned on and not in standby, sleep or hibernation mode.

Check that the headset and the micro-USB cable are connected directly to the computer, not via a USB hub.

There may be a problem with the computer’s USB port. Try connecting to another USB port on the computer if available.

Try the charging procedure again.


Why is the charging time too long?

Check that the micro-USB cable is connected firmly to the headset and the computer.

Check that the headset and the micro-USB cable are connected directly to the computer, not via a USB hub.

The ambient temperature may be outside the charging temperature range (5 °C – 35 °C / 41 °F – 95 °F).


Why can’t the computer recognize the headset?

Check that the micro-USB cable is connected firmly to the headset and the computer.

Check that the headset and the micro-USB cable are connected directly to the computer, not via a USB hub.

There may be a problem with the computer’s USB port. Try connecting to another USB port on the computer if available.

Check the computer’s operating system compatibility and update it if necessary.


Why is the remaining battery charge not displayed on my iPhone or iPod touch screen?

The remaining battery charge is only displayed when connected via HFP (Hands-free Profile). Ensure your iPhone or iPod touch (iOS 5.0 or later) supports HFP and is connected using this profile.

If connected using “Media audio” (A2DP) only in a multi-point connection, the battery charge will not be displayed correctly.


What should I do if there is no sound?

Check if both the headset and the connected device (e.g., smartphone) are turned on.

Turn up the volume of the headset and the connected device.

Check if the connected device is playing back.

Check if the BLUETOOTH connection is established correctly.

If using the headphone cable, make sure it is inserted firmly until it clicks.

Try pairing the headset and the BLUETOOTH device again.

Make sure the correct profile (A2DP or HFP/HSP) is selected on the BLUETOOTH device.

If connected to a computer, make sure the computer’s sound output setting is set to the BLUETOOTH device.


Why is the sound level low?

Turn up the volume of the headset and the connected device.


Why is the sound quality low?

Turn down the volume of the connected BLUETOOTH device.

Keep the headset away from microwaves, Wi-Fi devices, etc.

Bring the headset closer to the BLUETOOTH device. Remove any obstacles between them.

Switch the BLUETOOTH connection to A2DP by operating the connected device if it’s connected via HFP/HSP.

If the connected device supports LDAC, changing the sound quality setting on the device might improve quality.

Check the “Sound quality mode” setting in the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app. Set it to “Priority on Sound Quality” if possible.

Touch the whole touch sensor control panel on the right earcup with your hand. The mode is active as long as you are touching the panel. The indicator (yellow) next to the NC/AMBIENT button flashes quickly.

Ensure your whole hand covers the panel; partial or incorrect touching may prevent activation.

To deactivate:

Move your hand off the touch sensor control panel.

Note:

– Ambient sound might not be heard depending on conditions and audio playback type/volume. Do not use where inability to hear surroundings is dangerous.

2. Priority on stable connection: Prioritizes connection stability over quality. Select this mode if the connection is unstable (e.g., intermittent sound).

Note:

– Playback time may be shorter depending on the sound quality mode and usage conditions.

– Intermittent sound may still occur in the “Priority on stable connection” mode depending on ambient conditions.


What audio codecs does the headset support?

The headset supports the following 5 codecs for music playback via an A2DP connection:

• SBC (Subband Codec): Standard codec supported by all BLUETOOTH devices.

• AAC (Advanced Audio Coding): Offers higher sound quality than SBC; mainly used by Apple products.

• aptX: Audio coding technology used by some Android smartphones, providing higher sound quality than SBC.

The DSEE HX function upscales compressed sound sources (like CD or MP3) to near High-Resolution Audio quality, reproducing clear high-range sounds often lost in compression. It is available when set via the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app under the following conditions:

How do I receive a phone call?

Ensure your smartphone/mobile phone supports HFP or HSP profile (set to HFP if both are supported) and is connected via BLUETOOTH. This headset only supports normal incoming calls, not calling apps.

1. Connect the headset to the smartphone/mobile phone beforehand.

2. When you hear a ring tone (from headset or phone, depending on settings) and the indicator (blue) flashes, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly (about 0.4-second interval) to receive the call. Music playback pauses automatically. Use the microphone on the left or right unit for talking.

3. Control the call volume using the touch sensor control panel on the right unit (swipe up to increase, down to decrease). Volume can only be adjusted during the call.

4. To end the call, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly again. If you were listening to music, playback resumes automatically (depending on the phone).

If no ring tone is heard via headset: Check HFP/HSP connection status on the phone. If playback doesn’t pause, pause it manually.

Hint: Some phones default to answering on the phone itself. You might need to switch the call to the headset by holding your finger on the touch sensor panel or using the phone’s menu.

Note: Keep the phone at least 50 cm (19 3/4 in.) away to avoid noise. Playback might not resume automatically after the call.

2. Connect the headset to the Android smartphone via BLUETOOTH.

3. When the smartphone is in standby or playing music, keep your finger touching the sensor panel on the right earcup to activate the Google App. You will hear a start-up sound.

4. Make a request to the Google App through the headset’s microphone.

Note: After activation, if no request is made for a certain time, a beep sounds and the Google App deactivates. The Google App cannot be activated by saying “OK Google” through the headset microphone, even if the phone setting is enabled.


How do I use the voice assist function (Siri) on iPhone?

1. Turn Siri on in iPhone settings: Go to [Settings] -> [Siri].

2. Connect the headset to the iPhone via BLUETOOTH.

3. When the iPhone is in standby or playing music, hold your finger to the touch sensor control panel on the right earcup to activate Siri. You will hear a start-up sound.

4. Make a request to Siri through the headset’s microphone.

5. To continue making requests before Siri deactivates, double-tap the touch sensor control panel lightly.

Note: After activating Siri, if no request is made for a certain time, a beep will sound and Siri will be deactivated. Siri cannot be activated by saying “Hey Siri” through the headset’s microphone, even if the iPhone’s [Allow “Hey Siri”] setting is on.

Static electricity accumulated in the body may cause mild tingling in your ears. To minimize the effect, wear clothes made from natural materials.

Are there any other precautions for using the headset?

• Pasting stickers on the touch sensor control panel may cause it to malfunction.

• Be careful not to catch your finger when folding.

• When using as wired headphones, use only the supplied cable, inserted firmly.

• Avoid humidity, dust, soot, steam, or direct sunlight. Do not leave in a car for long.

• BLUETOOTH function may not work on mobile phones depending on radio waves and location.

• High volume may affect hearing.

• For traffic safety, do not use while driving or cycling.
