Unplug the product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.

Do not use this product near water, for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool.

Slots and openings in the cabinet and the back or bottom are provided for ventilation. To protect it from overheating, these openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings should never be blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator or heat register. This product should not be placed in a built-in installation unless proper ventilation is provided.

Please adhere to the following battery safety precautions:

• Use only size AAA (R03) batteries (4 pieces).

• Do not dispose of the batteries in a fire, as the cell may explode. Check with local codes for possible special disposal instructions.

• Do not open or mutilate the batteries. Released electrolyte is corrosive and may cause damage to the eyes or skin. It may be toxic if swallowed.

• Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to short the battery with conducting materials such as rings, bracelets, and keys. The battery or conductor may overheat and cause burns.

• Do not attempt to recharge or rejuvenate the batteries provided with or identified for use with this product.

• Replace all batteries at the same time. Mixing fresh and discharged batteries could increase internal cell pressure and rupture the discharged batteries.

• Observe proper polarity when inserting batteries.

• Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.

• Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet locations.

• Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.

• Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.

Step 1. Slide open the battery compartment cover located at the bottom of the answering machine.

Step 2. Insert four size AAA (R03) batteries. Make sure the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on the batteries match the markings in the battery compartment.

Step 3. Slide the cover back until it snaps into place.

The supplied manganese batteries provide backup power if an AC power failure occurs. The backup duration is approximately 7 hours.

The POWER indicator flashes. The indicator also flashes when no batteries are inserted while the answering machine is connected to an AC outlet.

Step 1. Connect the supplied AC power adaptor to the DC IN 12V jack on the answering machine and to an AC outlet. When you connect the adaptor, the answering machine takes about 10 seconds to reset. Observe the message counter; when it shows a flashing “P”, the answering machine is ready for use.

Step 2. Connect your telephone. First, unplug your telephone from the telephone outlet. Then connect the telephone to the TEL jack on the SONY TAM-2000. Skip this step if you do not want to connect a telephone to the answering machine.

Step 3. Connect the supplied telephone line cord to the LINE jack on the SONY TAM-2000 and to a telephone outlet.

The AC power adaptor polarity is center-negative, meaning the center pin is negative and the outer ring is positive.

If you have 2 phone lines on a single RJ-14 phone jack with 4 wires, the answering machine will only answer the first phone line on the center pair of wires. Please consult your telephone company for rewiring if you need to answer the second phone line which uses the outer pair of wires.

Step 1. Insert the cords into the grooves on the answering machine.

Step 2. Attach the supplied screws to the wall, leaving them spaced 10 cm (4 inches) apart vertically.

Step 3. Hook the answering machine to the screws.

Step 1. Press SET/REC. You will hear the recorded instructions.

Step 2. Press TIME. You will hear the recorded instructions.

Step 3. Set the current day of the week by pressing SKIP or REPEAT. Press SKIP to advance the day, or REPEAT to go back. Each time you press SKIP or REPEAT, the answering machine announces the day of the week.

Step 4. Press SET/REC.

Step 5. Set the hour from which you want to start, by pressing SKIP or REPEAT. Press SKIP to increase the hour, or REPEAT to decrease it.

Step 6. Press SET/REC.

Step 7. Set the minute from which you want to start, by pressing SKIP or REPEAT. Press SKIP to increase the minute, or REPEAT to decrease it.

Step 8. Press SET/REC at the day and time you have set. The answering machine announces the day and time and starts counting time.

If more than 20 seconds elapse between pressing buttons (or more than 60 seconds when setting the minute), the operation will be canceled and you must start over again.

Press TIME. The answering machine will announce the current day and time.

When playing back recorded incoming messages, you will not hear a time stamp. If you try to check the current time, you will hear five short error beeps.

Step 1. Press SET/REC. You will hear the recorded instructions.

Step 2. Press ANSWER ON/OFF. You will hear the recorded instructions, and three horizontal bars appear in the message counter.

Step 3. Set a one-digit number between 0 and 9 by pressing SKIP or REPEAT. Press SKIP to increase the number, or REPEAT to decrease. The selected number is displayed on the message counter.

Step 4. Press SET/REC. The security code is set, and you hear a long confirmation beep.

Set any other one-digit security code by following the standard setup steps, and the old security code will be cleared automatically.

Step 1. Press SET/REC.

Step 2. Press ANSWER ON/OFF. Three horizontal bars appear in the message counter.

Step 3. Press SET/REC again. You hear a long confirmation beep, and the security code already set is erased.

• Normal Mode: Used when you want to play a greeting to ask the caller to leave a message. The pre-recorded greeting is: “Hello, I’m unable to answer your call right now. Please leave your name, number and message after the tone.”

• Announcement Only Mode: Used when you want to make an announcement to the caller without accepting incoming messages (for example, when you are away on a long vacation). The pre-recorded greeting is: “Hello, I’m unable to answer your call right now. Please call again. Thank you.”

To select the announcement only mode, set the AUDIBLE IND/ANNOUNCE ONLY switch to ANNOUNCE ONLY.

To turn on the beep, set the AUDIBLE IND/ANNOUNCE ONLY switch to AUDIBLE IND ON.

The answering machine can record messages up to about 15 minutes in its memory. If the remaining portion of the memory becomes less than a minute, the answering machine is automatically switched to the announcement only mode.

Step 1. Press SET/REC. You hear the recorded instructions.

Step 2. Press GREETING. You hear the recorded instructions.

Step 3. After you hear the tone, start recording. Speak about 30 cm (12 inches) away from the microphone. The greeting must be between 2 seconds and 4 minutes. If it is less than 2 seconds, you will hear five short error beeps and must start over.

Step 4. Press SET/REC to stop recording. The SONY TAM-2000 automatically replays the greeting you recorded.

Press GREETING. The answering machine replays the greeting. If no greeting has been recorded, the pre-recorded factory message is heard instead.

Record a new greeting. The new greeting automatically replaces the old one.

Step 1. Press GREETING.

Step 2. While the greeting is being replayed, press ERASE. Note that the pre-recorded factory greeting messages themselves cannot be erased.

• If there are fresh batteries in the answering machine, the recorded greeting will be retained in the memory for about 7 hours during a power failure.

• If the batteries are dead or not installed, the recorded greeting will be cleared. In this case, “P” will appear on the message counter when power is restored, and you must record the greeting and set the day and time again.

Press ANSWER ON/OFF so that the ANSWER ON indicator lights up.

• If the remaining time for recording messages is less than 4 minutes, the answering machine announces the remaining time in minutes when you turn on the answering function.

• If the remaining time is less than a minute, “F” flashes in the message counter. The answering machine instructs you to erase the messages in memory when you try to turn on the answering function. You cannot turn on the answering function unless you erase the messages.

You can speak to the caller even after the answering machine starts answering the incoming call. Pick up the handset of your telephone connected to the answering machine. The SONY TAM-2000 stops playback of the greeting, and you can speak to the caller. If playback does not stop, press PLAY/STOP.

Press ANSWER ON/OFF so that the ANSWER ON indicator goes off.

Press PLAY/STOP. Messages are played back in the order they were recorded. The sequence is indicated on the message counter. When all the messages are played back, the message counter returns to zero and playback stops. If there are no new recordings, the old ones will be played back instead.

When all new messages are played back, press PLAY/STOP again to listen to old messages.

During playback of a message, press REPEAT. Playback resumes from the beginning of the current message.

Press REPEAT within the first three seconds of the current message. The SONY TAM-2000 jumps back to the previous message.

During playback of a message, press SKIP. The SONY TAM-2000 plays back the next message.

During playback, use SKIP or REPEAT as follows:

• To play back 50% faster than the normal speed: Press and hold SKIP.

• To play back 30% slower than the normal speed: Press and hold REPEAT.

• To return to the normal speed: Release SKIP or REPEAT.

Press PLAY/STOP to stop playback.

During message playback, press ERASE. You will hear a confirmation beep and then the next message is played back.

When the SONY TAM-2000 is not playing back any messages, press ERASE. The answering machine announces that all of your messages have been erased. Note that if there are any new messages you have not played back yet, the operation will be canceled.

Step 1. Press MEMO. You will hear the recorded instructions.

Step 2. Record a message. Speak about 30 cm (12 inches) away from the microphone. A message must be between 2 seconds and 4 minutes. If the 4-minute limit is exceeded, recording stops automatically.

Step 3. To stop recording, press MEMO again. The message counter reading increases by one.

The telephone connected to the answering machine will ring while recording continues. To answer the call, stop recording by pressing MEMO.

• If the memory becomes full during recording, the “F” indicator flashes in the message counter, and recording stops automatically.

• If the remaining memory space is less than one minute, the “F” indicator flashes in the message counter. The SONY TAM-2000 instructs you to erase the messages recorded in the memory when you press MEMO. You cannot record a memo message unless you erase the recorded messages.

Step 1. Call your phone number from a pushbutton (tone) phone.

Step 2. When you hear the greeting, press #, then enter your security code. The security code must be entered within two seconds.

Step 3. You hear a long confirmation beep, and the greeting stops. The number of recorded messages is announced. If there are new messages, they play back automatically. If there are only old messages or no messages, the system stands by for a control code.

Step 4. Enter a control code within 20 seconds to continue with other operations, or hang up when finished.

If you left home and forgot to turn the answering function on, you can turn it on by calling the SONY TAM-2000 and letting it ring for 10 rings. The answering machine will automatically answer the call after 10 rings even if the answering function is off. The answering function will remain on for all subsequent calls.

If any new messages are recorded, the SONY TAM-2000 will answer after three rings. If no new messages are recorded, it will answer after five rings. When calling from a remote phone, if you hear more than three rings, you will know there are no new messages and can hang up, saving the cost of the call. This feature is available in normal answering mode only.

The control codes for remote operations are shown in the table below. Each command begins with pressing the # button followed by the corresponding numeric code.

Do not expose the SONY TAM-2000 to:

• Heat sources such as radiators or air ducts.

• Extremely low temperatures.

• Direct sunlight.

• Excessive dust.

• Moisture or rain.

• Mechanical vibration or shock.

• Sloping surfaces (do not place the answering machine on a sloping surface).

Clean the cabinets with a soft cloth slightly moistened with water or a mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine as they may damage the finish of the cabinet.

When the power is restored after a power interruption, if the batteries are not installed or are dead, the “P” indicator will flash in the message counter. This means that the greeting message, any recorded messages, and the current day and time have all been cleared. In this case, you must set and record all of these again.

• Make sure the answering function is turned on.

• Make sure the AUDIBLE IND/ANNOUNCE ONLY switch is not set to the leftmost position (ANNOUNCE ONLY ON).

• Make sure the memory is not full. If the memory is full, erase some or all of the messages.

This indicates that the answering machine is connected to an AC power line for the first time, or that all memory contents (messages and settings) have been cleared due to a power interruption. Press any button to turn off the flashing “P” indicator.
