To ensure safe operation of your SONY BVM-F24U monitor, please follow these precautions:

• Operate the unit only with the power source specified in the “Specifications” section. The nameplate with operating voltage and power consumption details is located on the rear.

• If any solid object or liquid falls into the cabinet, unplug the unit immediately and have it checked by qualified personnel before further use.

• Do not drop or place heavy objects on the power cord. If the power cord is damaged, turn off the power immediately. It is dangerous to use the unit with a damaged power cord.

• Unplug the unit from the wall outlet if it will not be used for several days or more.

• To disconnect the power cord, grasp the plug itself, not the cord.

• The power socket-outlet should be installed near the equipment and be easily accessible.

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your SONY BVM-F24U. Please observe the following guidelines:

Ventilation:

• Allow for adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat buildup. Do not place the unit on soft surfaces like rugs or blankets, or near materials like curtains that may block ventilation holes.

Environment:

• Do not install the unit near heat sources such as radiators or air ducts.

• Avoid placing the unit in areas subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.

Rack Mounting:

• When rack-mounting, be aware that the temperature around the monitor may rise. To prevent damage, keep ventilation holes clear, install a ventilation fan, or take other measures to keep the temperature within the specified range: operating temperature of 0 to 35 °C (32 to 95°F), with an optimum range of 20 to 30°C (68 to 86°F).

Magnetism:

• Do not place the unit near objects that generate magnetism, such as magnets, speakers, or electric clocks. Magnetism can cause picture bounce, oscillations, or discoloration.

• The picture may also be affected by earth’s magnetism depending on the installation direction. This is not an equipment failure; simply degauss the unit to correct it.

To clean the cabinet of your SONY BVM-F24U, periodically use a mild detergent solution. Never use strong solvents like thinner or benzine, as they will damage the cabinet. Always unplug the unit before cleaning as a safety precaution.

For the CRT screen:

• Dust accumulates easily on the CRT. Clean it when necessary with a soft cloth.

• The surface of the CRT is easily scratched. Do not rub or touch the surface unnecessarily to avoid scratching the picture tube.

• If you touch the CRT surface, you might feel a weak electrical shock. This is static electricity and will not affect the human body.

The front panel of the SONY BVM-F24U has several indicators to show its operational status:

1. Tally lamp: With factory settings, this lamp lights when pins No. 8 and No. 9 of the REMOTE 2 connector on the rear panel are shorted. This can be reconfigured in the REMOTE menu.

2. POWER lamp: Lights when the monitor is put into operation mode from standby mode by pressing the POWER switch on the optional BKM-10R/11R control unit.

3. STANDBY lamp: Lights when the monitor is in standby mode. This occurs when the MAIN POWER switch on the rear is turned on (it will blink for a few moments first) or when changed to standby by an external control. Note: When this lamp is blinking, the monitor is initializing internal data and cannot be put into operation mode. Wait until the lamp is steadily lit.

4. OVER LOAD lamp: Lights to warn of CRT overload. If this lamp is lit, reduce the contrast or brightness.

The rear panel of the SONY BVM-F24U provides various connections:

• MAIN POWER switch: When turned on, the monitor enters operation mode. It can be configured to enter standby mode instead via the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION menu.

• AC IN socket (3-pin): Connects the monitor to an AC power source via the supplied power cord.

• Fuse: Use a T4AH fuse.

• RGB INPUT connectors (BNC type): For analog RGB and sync signals. The type of signal is set in the INPUT CONFIGURATION menu.

• HD-SDI I/O connectors (BNC type): For HD serial digital signals. The MONITOR OUT connectors provide a loop-through output of each input signal.

• REMOTE 1 connectors (D-sub 9-pin): RS-485 serial interface for connecting two or more monitors in a loop-through configuration for centralized control.

• REMOTE 2 connector (D-sub 9-pin): Forms a parallel switch to control the monitor externally. Pin assignments can be changed in the REMOTE menu.

• ISR (Interactive Status Reporting) connector (D-sub 9-pin): Connects to an ISR system.

• CONTROL UNIT connector (D-sub 9-pin): Connects the optional BKM-10R Monitor Control Unit.

The optional BKM-10R Monitor Control Unit provides comprehensive control over the SONY BVM-F24U. Here are its main functions:

• Monitor memory card insertion slot: Insert an optional BKM-12Y Monitor Memory Card here.

• SHIFT button: Toggles between two sets of functions for the function buttons. When off, the LEDs are green; when on, the LEDs are amber.

• Function buttons: Change the operation conditions for the monitor. Each button has two functions, selected by the SHIFT button.

• Menu operation buttons (UP, DOWN, MENU, ENTER): Used to navigate the on-screen display menus.

• POWER switch: Turns the monitor on or off. Can be used to control specific or all connected monitors via the ADDRESS menu.

• DEGAUSS button: Press to degauss the CRT. Wait for more than five minutes before degaussing again.

• Numeric keypad: Used to enter channel numbers or setting values in the menus.

• MANUAL adjustment buttons and knobs (PHASE, CHROMA, BRIGHT, CONTRAST): Press a button to enable its corresponding knob for manual adjustment. The knobs are also used for navigating menus.

When the SHIFT button on the optional BKM-10R/11R control unit is OFF, the function button LEDs are green and they perform the following primary functions:

• Underscan button: The picture is underscanned by 3%, showing the four ends of the raster. For computer RGB signals, this is fixed to ON.

• H delay button: The picture moves horizontally, showing the horizontal sync signal. Brightness is automatically increased for easier viewing.

• V delay button: The picture moves vertically, showing the vertical sync signal in the center. Brightness is automatically increased.

• MONO button: Displays a monochrome picture. This does not function with an RGB signal input.

• ADDRESS button: Displays the ADDRESS menu on screen for setting up control of multiple monitors.

• F2 button: If a short-cut is assigned, this button can directly access the MANUAL menu of the COLOR TEMP ADJ menu.

• F1 button: Hides the on-screen text characters in the MANUAL menu of some menus, making adjustments easier to see.

• COMB button: This function is not available for this unit.

• APT (aperture) button: This function is not available for this unit.

When the SHIFT button on the optional BKM-10R/11R control unit is ON, the function button LEDs are amber and they perform the following secondary functions:

• 16:9 button: This button is not available for this unit. For computer RGB signals, the aspect ratio is set to 5:4, and for other signals it is set to 16:9.

• SYNC button: When ON (EXT SYNC), the monitor synchronizes to the sync signal input to the COMP or HD/VD connectors. When OFF (INT SYNC), it synchronizes to the sync signal included in the monitored signal.

• BLUE ONLY button: This button is not available for this unit.

• R/G/B buttons: When pushed in (ON), the R (red), G (green), and B (blue) beams are cut respectively.

• SAFE AREA button: When pushed in (ON), a safe area is displayed on the screen. Note: This may not be shown in the correct position when EXT SYNC is selected.

• F4 button: For future expansion.

• F3 button: The MANUAL adjustment knobs are switched to normal (OFF) or precise (ON) adjustment mode for adjusting levels like contrast, brightness, and color temperature.

Follow these steps to insert and eject the optional BKM-12Y Memory Card into the control unit for your SONY BVM-F24U. Do not eject the card while data is being saved or loaded.

To insert the BKM-12Y Monitor Memory Card:

1. Locate the monitor memory card insertion slot on the control unit.

2. Hold the memory card, being careful not to touch the connectors on the front edge.

3. Push the memory card into the slot until the EJECT button comes out.

To eject the BKM-12Y Monitor Memory Card:

1. Press the EJECT button.

2. The monitor memory card will be ejected from the slot.

3. Take out the monitor memory card.

To navigate and make adjustments in the menus of your SONY BVM-F24U using the optional control unit, follow these steps:

1. Press the MENU button to display the main Menu List.

2. Use the UP/DOWN buttons or the PHASE knob to move the cursor to the desired menu item (e.g., SET UP).

3. Press the ENTER button or the Ent button on the numeric keypad to open the selected menu and display its Level 1 options.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to navigate deeper into the menu structure until you reach the desired setting.

To change a setting:

• Once an item is selected, its text will turn yellow, indicating it is in setting mode. Use the UP/DOWN buttons or PHASE knob to change the value.

• For list selections, move the cursor to the desired option and press ENTER.

• For numerical values, you can also use the numeric keypad to enter the value directly.

To exit or go back:

• Pressing the MENU button will take you back to the previous menu level. From the main Menu List, it will exit the menus entirely.

• To abort an operation in progress, press the MENU button. The setting or adjustment will be canceled.

Entering a numerical value:

1. Move the cursor to the item you wish to set and press ENTER. The value will turn yellow.

2. Set the value using one of three methods:

• Enter the value directly using the numeric keypad, then press ENTER.

• Use the UP/DOWN buttons to select the value.

• Turn the PHASE knob to select the value.

3. Press ENTER to confirm. The value will turn white.

Entering characters (e.g., for a channel name):

1. Navigate to the desired item (e.g., NEW NAME) and press ENTER.

2. A yellow question mark “?” will appear, indicating the character input position.

3. Use the UP/DOWN buttons or turn the PHASE knob to cycle through the available characters (A-Z, 0-9, symbols).

4. Press ENTER to set the selected character.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all characters.

6. When finished, press ENTER again to confirm the entire string. The display will return to the previous menu.

To correct a character, press the Del button on the numeric keypad to delete the character to the left of the yellow “?”.

The main menu of the SONY BVM-F24U provides access to all its settings. The primary options are:

• CONTROL PRESET ADJ: Sets the preset values for the input signal brightness and contrast.

• COLOR TEMP ADJ: Sets the color temperature.

• SET UP: A group of menus for performing monitor setup, including:

– INPUT CONFIGURATION: Sets the input channel.

– REMOTE: Sets the remote control functionality.

– PASSWORD: Sets passwords for menus.

– SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: Sets input channel selection method and power-up conditions.

– ON SCREEN SET: Sets data about the screen display.

– ALIGNMENT: Adjusts screen convergence and geometry.

– WHITE UNIFORMITY: Adjusts beam landing and color uniformity of the CRT.

– EXTEND MENU: Loads factory default data for installed boards.

• MEMORY CARD: Operates on data in the memory card (save, load, delete, format).

• COPY FROM: Copies set-up data from other connected monitors.

• STATUS: Displays information about the monitor or the current channel.

• KEY PROTECT: When set to ON, function buttons on the control unit (except menu buttons) are disabled.

When multiple monitors are connected via a serial remote connection, you can use the ADDRESS menu to select which monitor or group of monitors to control.

1. Press the ADDRESS button on the control unit. The ADDRESS Menu will appear on screen.

2. Use the UP/DOWN buttons to select a control mode:

• SINGLE: Controls only one specific monitor. You will be prompted to enter the monitor’s address number.

• GROUP: Controls a specific group of monitors. You will be prompted to enter the group address number.

• ALL: Controls all connected monitors simultaneously.

• ALL POWER ON / ALL POWER OFF: Turns all connected monitors on or off.

3. Press the ENTER or Ent button. Serial remote operation for the selected monitor(s) becomes active.

To cancel the remote control mode, press the ADDRESS button again. To exit the menu, press the ADDRESS or MENU button.

Address Short-cut Function:

• SINGLE mode: Press ADDRESS, then enter the monitor’s address number on the numeric keypad.

• GROUP mode: Press ADDRESS, then press the F1 button, then enter the group number.

• ALL mode: Press ADDRESS, then press the F2 button.

The SONY BVM-F24U supports a variety of HD-SDI and analog RGB signal formats.
