The main components of the SIEMENS TE501 are:

1. Bean container

Please follow these safety instructions when using the SIEMENS TE501:

Danger of electric shock!

Connect and operate the appliance only according to the type plate specifications. To avoid potential hazards, repairs such as replacing a damaged cable must only be carried out by customer service personnel. Never immerse the appliance or mains cable in water. Use only if the power cord and appliance show no signs of damage. Should a fault occur, pull the plug or disconnect from the mains immediately.

General Usage

This appliance can be used by children aged 8 years and above and by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities if they have been given supervision or instruction. Keep children under 8 years of age away from the appliance and connecting cable. Children shall not play with the appliance. Cleaning and maintenance shall not be made by children unless they are older than 8 years and supervised.

Magnetic Fields

The appliance contains permanent magnets that may influence electronic implants such as pacemakers or insulin pumps. Persons with electronic implants should keep a minimum of 10 cm away from the front of the appliance.

Risk of suffocation!

Do not allow children to play with packaging material. Store small parts safely as they can be easily swallowed.

Risk of injury!

Do not reach into the grinding unit. Misuse of the appliance can potentially lead to injury.

Risk of burns!

The milk frother gets very hot. After use, allow it to cool down first before touching. The heating element surfaces and warming plate can also be subject to residual heat.

Power on/off switch O/I (9): This switch is used to turn the appliance on or to switch it off completely (power supply off). To switch off, it is important to use the service button (12).

Service button (12): When pressed briefly, the appliance rinses and switches off. If the service button flashes, the service programme needs to be run. Press and hold the service button to start the service programme. The button flashes while the programme is running and turns off when it has ended.

Steam button (11): Press this button to generate steam for frothing milk.

Start button (10): Press this button to start preparing a drink. Press it again during preparation to stop the dispensing process early.

The LEDs on your SIEMENS TE501 light up and flash to indicate the following:

• Water tank LED lights up: The water tank is empty and needs to be refilled.

• Water tank LED flashes: The water filter is exhausted and needs to be replaced. (Note: When first starting the appliance, this flashing light does not signify “Change filter”).

• Bean container LED lights up: The bean container is empty and needs to be refilled.

• Steam valve LED lights up: The steam valve needs to be opened or closed.

• Steam valve LED flashes: Depending on the setting, steam or hot water is coming out of the milk frother.

• Ground coffee LED lights up: When ground coffee is selected, this symbol lights up while coffee is being dispensed.

• Drip tray LED lights up: The drip tray is missing or has not been inserted correctly.

• Drip tray LED flashes: The trays are full. Empty the trays and reinsert them.

• Brewing unit door LED lights up: The brewing unit door is open. Close the door.

• Brewing unit door LED flashes: Remove and clean the brewing unit.

“Coffee strength” rotary knob (13): This knob is used to adjust the coffee strength from Very mild to Strong, or to select the setting for pre-ground coffee.

“Drink selection” rotary knob (14): This knob is used to select the required beverage and quantity. It can be used to select:

• Small espresso

• Espresso

• Small café crème

• Café crème

• Large café crème

• 2 small espresso

• 2 espresso

• 2 small café crèmes

• 2 café crèmes

• 2 large café crèmes

This knob is also used to change user settings.

To set up your SIEMENS TE501 for the first time, follow these steps:

1. Remove the protective film.

2. Place the machine on a flat, water-resistant surface that can take its weight. Ensure ventilation slots are not covered.

3. Pull out the mains plug from the cable compartment (20) and plug it in. Adjust cable length as needed.

4. Assemble the milk frother (6) completely and ensure it is fitted.

5. Lift the water tank lid (17).

6. Remove and rinse the water tank (16) and fill it with fresh cold water, not exceeding the max mark.

7. Replace the water tank (16) and push it firmly down into place.

8. Close the water tank lid (17).

9. Fill the bean container (1) with coffee beans.

10. Press the power on/off switch (9) to switch on the appliance. The water tank LED will flash and the steam valve LED will light up.

11. Place a container under the milk frother outlet (6).

12. Carefully pull out the milk frother (6) to open it. The appliance will rinse the frother with water, and the steam valve LED will flash.

13. When the steam valve LED lights up constantly, push the milk frother (6) in to close it.

The appliance will then heat up and rinse, with some water running out of the coffee outlet. When the service, steam, and start buttons (12, 11, and 10) light up, the appliance is ready for use.

Note: If the appliance is being used for the first time, or after a long period of non-use, the first beverage will not have full aroma and should not be consumed. A stable “crema” will be achieved after the first few cups.

A new water filter must be rinsed before it can be used. To do this, proceed as follows:

1. Press the water filter firmly into the empty water tank with the aid of the measuring spoon (18).

2. Fill the water tank (16) with water up to the max mark.

3. Turn the rotary knob (13) to the ground coffee position.

4. Press and hold the steam button (11) and service button (12) simultaneously for at least 5 seconds. Either “off” or “on” will light up.

5. Press the start button (10) to select “on”.

6. Press and hold the start button (10) for at least 5 seconds to confirm. All LEDs will light up briefly.

7. The water tank LED will flash and the steam valve LED will light up.

8. Place a container with a capacity of 0.5 litres under the milk frother outlet (6).

9. Pull out the milk frother (6) to open it. The steam valve LED will flash.

10. Water will now flow through the filter to rinse it.

11. When the steam valve LED lights up constantly, press the milk frother (6) in to close it.

12. Empty the container. The appliance is ready to use again.

Rinsing the filter also activates the setting for the change filter display, causing the water tank LED to flash when replacement is needed.

It is important to set the water hardness correctly so the machine can accurately indicate when to run the descale process. The factory setting is 4. Use the provided test strip to check your water hardness: dip it briefly in water, shake it, and check the result after one minute.

The hardness levels correspond to the following values:

To change the setting, proceed as follows:

1. Turn the “Coffee strength” rotary knob (13) to the mildest bean setting.

2. Press and hold the steam button (11) and service button (12) simultaneously for at least 5 seconds. The currently set water hardness will be indicated by the number of lit LEDs.

3. Press the start button (10) repeatedly until the required number of LEDs light up to match your water hardness level (e.g., for hardness level 3, three LEDs will light up).

4. Press and hold the start button (10) for at least 5 seconds to confirm. The set number of LEDs will light up to indicate the selection has been saved.

You can set the period of time after which the SIEMENS TE501 should automatically switch off after the last drink preparation. A time between 15 minutes and 4 hours can be set.

1. Turn the “Coffee strength” rotary knob (13) to the medium bean strength setting.

2. Press and hold the steam button (11) and service button (12) simultaneously for at least 5 seconds. The current switch-off time is indicated by the number of LEDs that light up.

3. Press the start button (10) repeatedly until the required number of LEDs light up to indicate the desired switch-off time:

• 1 LED = 15 minutes

• 2 LEDs = 30 minutes

• 3 LEDs = 45 minutes

• 4 LEDs = 1 hour

• 5 LEDs = 2 hours

• 6 LEDs = 4 hours

4. Press and hold the start button (10) for at least 5 seconds to confirm. The set number of LEDs will light up, indicating the selected time has been saved.

To set the brewing temperature on your SIEMENS TE501:

1. Turn the “Coffee strength” rotary knob (13) to the strong bean setting.

2. Press and hold the steam button (11) and service button (12) simultaneously for at least 5 seconds. The current brewing temperature setting is indicated by the number of LEDs that light up.

3. Press the start button (10) repeatedly until the required number of LEDs light up to indicate the desired temperature:

• 1 LED = low

• 2 LEDs = medium

• 3 LEDs = high

4. Press and hold the start button (10) for at least 5 seconds to confirm. The set number of LEDs will light up to indicate the selected temperature has been saved.

The selector (3) for grind setting adjusts the grind from coarse to fine.

Warning! Adjust the grinding unit only while it is running! Otherwise, the appliance may be damaged. Do not reach into the grinding unit.

With the grinding unit running, adjust the selector (3) from fine (turn anticlockwise) to coarse (turn clockwise).

Information: The effects of the new grind setting will not become apparent until after the second cup of coffee.

Tip: Choose a finer grind for dark roasted beans and a coarser grind for lighter beans.

To prepare coffee using fresh beans with your SIEMENS TE501, ensure the appliance is ready for use and follow these steps:

1. Place pre-warmed cup(s) under the coffee outlet (7). For a small espresso, it is recommended to preheat the cup with hot water.

2. Select the required coffee and quantity by turning the upper “Drink selection” rotary knob (14).

3. Select the required coffee strength by turning the lower “Coffee strength” rotary knob (13).

4. Press the start button (10).

The coffee will be brewed and poured into the cup(s). You can press the start button (10) again to stop the brewing process early.

To prepare coffee using ground coffee with your SIEMENS TE501:

1. Open the drawer (4).

2. Put ground coffee into the drawer (maximum two level measuring spoons). Caution: Do not use whole beans or instant coffee.

3. Close the drawer (4).

4. Turn the bottom “Coffee strength” rotary knob (13) to the ground coffee symbol.

5. Press the start button (10).

The coffee is then brewed and poured into the cup.

Risk of burns! The milk frother gets very hot. Hold it by the plastic part only.

The milk frother must be cleaned before drawing hot water. Ensure the appliance is ready for use.

1. Place a pre-heated cup or glass under the milk frother outlet (6).

2. Pull out the milk frother (6) to open it. The appliance will heat up, and hot water will run out of the milk frother outlet for about 40 seconds.

3. Stop the process by pushing in the milk frother (6).

Risk of burns! The milk frother gets very hot. Hold the milk frother by the plastic part only.

To prepare milk froth, ensure the appliance is ready for use:

1. Press the steam button (11). The button will flash and the appliance will heat up for approximately 20 seconds.

2. As soon as the button and the steam valve LED light up, immerse the milk frother so that it reaches the bottom of a cup or glass that is one-third filled with milk.

3. Pull out the milk frother (6) to open it.

Risk of burns! Escaping steam is very hot and may cause liquids to sputter. Do not touch the metal sleeve or aim it at anyone.

4. Froth the milk.

5. Push the milk frother (6) in to close it.

Tip: For optimal milk froth, use cold milk with a fat content of at least 1.5%. Clean the milk frother with lukewarm water immediately after use, as dried milk residue is difficult to remove.

Risk of electric shock: Unplug the appliance before cleaning it. Never immerse it in water. Do not use a steam cleaner.

• Wipe the housing with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cloths or cleaning agents.

• Always remove any traces of limescale, coffee, milk, and descaler immediately to prevent corrosion.

• New sponge cloths may contain salts which can cause rust film on stainless steel; wash them thoroughly before use.

• Pull the drip tray (8c) with the coffee grounds container (8b) forwards and out. Remove the panel (8a) and grate (8d). Empty and clean the drip tray and coffee grounds container.

• Remove the drawer (4) and clean.

• Remove the float (8e) and clean with a damp cloth.

• Wipe out the inside of the appliance (tray holders and drawer).

Important: The drip tray (8c) and coffee grounds container (8b) should be emptied and cleaned daily to prevent mould.

Do NOT put the following items in the dishwasher:

• Panel (8a)

• Float (8e)

• Drawer (4)

• Brewing unit (5a)

The following items ARE dishwasher-safe:

• Drip tray (8c)

• Coffee grounds container (8b)

• Grate (8d)

• Aroma cover (2)

• Measuring spoon (18)

The milk frother (6) must be cleaned after each use. Let it cool down before removing it.

Dismantle the milk frother for cleaning:

1. To remove, take hold of the metal sleeve and pull it downwards and off.

2. Twist the steam nozzle (6d) anticlockwise and remove it.

3. Remove the frothing tube (6c).

4. Clean the individual parts with a detergent solution and a soft brush. If necessary, soak them in a warm detergent solution. Clean the air hole (6e) thoroughly.

5. Rinse all parts with clean water and dry.

6. Fit the steam nozzle (6d) and frothing tube (6c) back into the metal sleeve.

7. Twist the steam nozzle clockwise until the marks are aligned.

8. Attach the milk frother to the steam valve. Check that the red mark on the steam valve is covered.

Risk of scalding! Only use the appliance when the milk frother (6) is completely assembled and fitted.

In addition to the automatic cleaning programme, the brewing unit (5a) should be removed regularly for cleaning.

1. Press the power on/off switch (9) to switch off the appliance. All lights will go off.

2. Open the door (5b) to the brewing unit.

3. Slide the red lock (5d) on the brewing unit completely to the left.

4. Press the eject lever (5c) down fully. The brewing unit is released.

5. Grasp the brewing unit (5a) by the recessed grips and remove it carefully.

6. Remove the cover (5e) of the brewing unit and rinse the brewing unit (5a) thoroughly under running water.

7. Thoroughly clean the brewing unit sieve under the running water.

Important: Do not clean with detergent or other cleaning agents and do not put it in the dishwasher.

8. Wipe out the inside of the appliance thoroughly with a damp cloth and remove any coffee residues.

9. Allow the brewing unit (5a) and the interior of the appliance to dry.

10. Replace the cover (5e) on the brewing unit and reinsert the brewing unit (5a) fully into the appliance.

11. Press the eject lever (5c) up fully.

12. Slide the red lock (5d) fully to the right and close the door (5b).

The service programme cleans and descales the appliance. It takes approximately 35 minutes. If the service button (12) flashes, the programme should be run immediately. Caution: Never interrupt the service programme. Do not drink the liquids.

Important: If a water filter is in the water tank, it must be removed before starting. Clean the brewing unit before starting.

To start, press and hold the service button (12) for at least 5 seconds. The button will flash while the programme is running.

1. Drip tray LED lights up: Empty the drip tray (8) and reinsert it. The appliance rinses twice.

2. Ground coffee LED lights up: Open the drawer (4), drop a Siemens cleaning tablet into the drawer, and close it. Press the start button (10).

3. Water tank LED lights up: Pour lukewarm water into the empty water tank (16) up to the 0.5l mark and dissolve 1 Siemens descaling tablet (TZ80002) in it. Press the start button (10). The programme will run for approximately 10 minutes.

4. Steam valve LED lights up: Place a container (at least 0.5 litres) under the milk frother outlet (6). Pull out the milk frother to open it. The programme will run for approximately 12 minutes.

5. Water tank LED lights up: Rinse the water tank (16) and refill it with fresh water up to the max mark. Press the start button (10). The appliance will rinse for approximately 30 seconds.

6. Steam valve LED lights up: Push the milk frother (6) in to close it. The programme will run for approximately 8 minutes.

7. Drip tray LED lights up: Empty the drip tray (8) and reinsert it.

If you were using a filter, reinsert it now. The appliance is cleaned, descaled, and ready for use again.

To avoid damage caused by frost, the appliance must be completely emptied first. Ensure the appliance is ready for use and the water tank (16) is filled.

1. Place a large container under the milk frother outlet (6).

2. Press the steam button (11). The steam valve LED will flash and the appliance will heat up for approximately 20 seconds.

3. If the steam valve LED lights up, open the milk frother (6) by pulling it out and release steam for about 15 seconds.

4. Press the power on/off switch (9) to switch off the appliance.

5. Empty the water tank (16) and the drip tray (8).
