What are the critical safety warnings for using SPD-SL pedals, shoes, and cleats?

SPD-SL pedals are designed to be used only for road riding.

Use only SHIMANO cleats (SM-SH10/SM-SH11/SM-SH12) with your pedals and shoes, and tighten the cleat mounting bolts securely to the shoes.

Before you attempt to ride with these pedals and shoes, be sure to adjust the pedal spring tension. If the spring tension is weak or the cleat is not firmly engaged, the pedal may release unexpectedly. If the spring tension is too strong, it may be difficult to release from the pedal. The tension should be set so that the cleat is securely held in the pedal, but can be released without undue force. Check the tension by repeatedly engaging and disengaging. Start with the weakest setting and increase it gradually until the desired tension is reached. If you have any trouble, have a professional bicycle dealer carry out the adjustment.

Make sure you understand the operation of the engagement/disengagement mechanism for your pedals and cleats. Practice engaging and disengaging until you become accustomed to the action. It is highly recommended to practice on level ground until you are proficient at engaging and disengaging your cleats from the pedals.

Read these Technical Service Instructions in conjunction with the service instructions for your SPD-SL pedals and shoes before use. Loose, worn, or damaged parts may cause you to fall, which could result in severe injury. It is recommended that only genuine Shimano replacement parts be used. If adjustments are not carried out correctly, the pedals may not release when you intend or they may release unexpectedly, which may result in a fall.

What are some important notes regarding the use and maintenance of SPD-SL cleats?

When walking in cycling shoes, be aware that the cleats and pedal bindings can wear out. It is recommended that the cleats be replaced periodically. Cleats should be replaced when it becomes difficult to release, or it begins to require much more effort than it did when it was new.

If the colored portions (yellow or red) of the cleats wear out, replace the cleats with new ones. For blue cleats, the colored portion is not designed to wear out with the cleat. If this part becomes worn, replace the cleat.

For cleaning the cleats and pedal bindings, consult a professional bicycle dealer.

What types of SPD-SL cleats are available and what are their differences?

There are three types of SPD-SL cleats, each with different characteristics:

Cleat Model Color Float Angle Mode Pivot Point
SM-SH10 Red Fixed mode Center of cleat
SM-SH11 Yellow Self-aligning mode Center of cleat
SM-SH12 Blue Self-aligning mode Front of the cleat

How do I attach the SPD-SL cleats to my cycling shoes?

To attach the cleats, use the provided cleat washer and cleat mounting bolt. You will need a 4 mm hexagon wrench to tighten the bolts.

First, temporarily tighten the cleat mounting bolts. After you have determined the best cleat position through adjustment, securely tighten the cleat mounting bolts using the hexagon wrench.

The recommended tightening torque is 5 – 6 N·m {44 – 52 in. lbs.}.

How can I adjust the position of the SPD-SL cleats on my shoes?

The cleat position can be adjusted to suit your preferences. The cleat has a forward/backward adjustment range of 11 mm and a left/right adjustment range of 5 mm.

To adjust, first attach the cleats but only tighten them temporarily. Make adjustments to the cleat position. Once you have determined the best position for your foot, use a 4 mm hexagon wrench to tighten the cleat mounting bolts securely.

How do I engage the SPD-SL cleats with the pedals?

Press the cleat on your shoe into the pedal with a forward and downward motion to engage.

How do I disengage the SPD-SL cleats from the pedals?

To disengage, twist your heel outward. This will release the cleat from the pedal binding.
