If you smell gas, follow these steps immediately:

1. Do not try to light any appliance.

2. Do not touch any electrical switch and do not use any phone in your building.

3. Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone and follow their instructions.

4. If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.

To fill the water heater, follow these steps:

1. Close the water heater drain valve by turning the handle to the right (clockwise). The drain valve is on the lower front of the water heater.

2. Open the cold water supply valve to the water heater. The cold water supply valve must be left open when the water heater is in use.

3. To insure complete filling of the tank, allow air to exit by opening the nearest hot water faucet. Allow water to run until a constant flow is obtained. This will let air out of the water heater and the piping.

4. Check all new water piping for leaks and repair as needed.

Follow these lighting instructions:

1. Read the safety information on the appliance label.

2. Remove the outer door.

3. Set the thermostat to the lowest setting by turning the water temperature dial clockwise to its lowest setting.

4. Turn the gas control knob clockwise to the OFF position. The knob cannot be turned from PILOT to OFF unless the knob is depressed slightly. Do not force.

5. Wait five minutes to clear out any gas. If you then smell gas, stop and follow the safety information. If you do not smell gas, go to the next step.

6. Remove or open the inner door located below the gas control unit.

7. Locate the pilot, which is on the right hand side of the burner.

8. If you do not smell gas, turn the knob on the gas control counter clockwise to the PILOT position.

9. Push in the control knob all the way and hold down. Immediately light the pilot with a match. Continue to hold the control knob in for about one minute after the pilot is lit. Release the knob and it will pop back up. The pilot should remain lit. If it goes out, repeat steps 3 through 8.

10. Replace or close the inner door.

11. At arms length away, turn the gas control knob counter clockwise to the full ON position.

12. Set the thermostat to the desired setting.

13. Replace the outer door.

To adjust the temperature, turn the water temperature dial clockwise to decrease the temperature, or counter clockwise to increase the temperature. The temperature settings are as follows:

HOT: Approximately 120 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the preferred starting point.

A: Approximately 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

B: Approximately 140 degrees Fahrenheit (lowest setting for dishwashers).

C: Approximately 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

VERY HOT: Approximately 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

To drain the water heater, follow these steps:

1. Turn the gas control knob to the OFF position.

2. Close the cold water inlet valve to the water heater.

3. Open a nearby hot water faucet and leave open to allow for draining.

4. Connect a hose to the drain valve and terminate to an adequate drain.

5. Open the water heater drain valve to allow for tank draining.

6. Once finished, close the drain valve.

Smelly water is often caused by a reaction between the anode rod and certain water conditions, typically resulting in a rotten egg smell. This can sometimes be eliminated or reduced by replacing the anode rod with one of a less active material and then chlorinating the water heater tank and all hot water lines.

Possible noises due to expansion and contraction of metal parts during periods of heat up and cool down do not represent harmful or dangerous conditions. Condensation can also cause sizzling and popping noises within the burner area during heating and cooling periods, which is considered normal.

Before lighting the pilot, ensure the following:

1. Check the gas lines for leaks using a soapy water solution. Do not use a match or open flame.

2. Ensure the temperature pressure relief valve is properly installed and piped to an adequate drain.

3. Verify the cold and hot water lines are connected correctly.

4. Make sure the water heater is completely filled with water.

5. Confirm that a water leak will not damage anything.

6. Ensure there is proper clearance between the water heater and combustible materials.

7. Check for adequate ventilation and combustion air.

8. Verify the draft hood vent piping is properly secured.

9. Confirm proper clearance between the vent pipe and combustible materials.

10. Ensure the vent pipe is properly sloped and terminates outdoors.
