Step 9. At arm’s length away, turn the gas control knob counter clockwise to the full ON position.

Step 10. Set the thermostat to the desired setting.

Turn the water temperature dial clockwise to decrease the temperature, or counter clockwise to increase the temperature. The mark of HOT is indicative of approximately 120 degrees Fahrenheit. A is approximately 130 degrees Fahrenheit, B is approximately 140 degrees Fahrenheit, C is approximately 150 degrees Fahrenheit, and VERY HOT is approximately 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

Condensation can occur when a new water heater is filled with cold water for the first time, when gas burns and produces water vapor, or when large amounts of hot water are used in a short time. Moisture from the products of combustion condenses on the cooler tank surfaces and forms drops of water. This is common at the time of startup after installation and when incoming water is cold. Do not assume the water heater is leaking until there has been enough time for the water in the tank to warm up.

Step 1. Turn the gas control knob to the OFF position.

Step 2. Close the cold water inlet valve to the water heater.

Step 3. Open a nearby hot water faucet and leave it open to allow for draining.

Step 4. Connect a hose to the drain valve and terminate to an adequate drain.

Step 5. Open the water heater drain valve to allow for tank draining.

Step 6. When finished, close the drain valve and follow the instructions in the manual to refill the water heater.

Soot build up indicates a problem that requires correction before further use.
