The front of your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB S has several keys and sensors with specific functions:

Back: Tap to return to the previous screen, or to close a dialog box, menu, or keyboard.

Front Camera: Take pictures and videos of yourself.

Home Key/Finger Print Scanner: Tap to return to the home screen. Activate the Fingerprint security feature to use as a fingerprint reader.

Power/Lock: Press and hold to turn the device on or off, or press to lock or wake up the screen. Press and hold to turn the device off or restart it, or for easy access to Airplane or Emergency Mode, and to Mute, Vibrate, and Sound modes.

Proximity and Gesture Sensors: Detects the presence of objects near the device.

Recent Apps: Tap to display recent apps, or touch and hold for home screen options.

Volume: Press to adjust the volume of your device’s sounds.

The back of your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB S has several ports and features:

3.5 mm Headset Jack: Connect an optional headset (not included).

Camera: Take pictures and record videos.

Flash: Illuminate subjects in low-light environments when taking a photo or recording video.

Infrared Blaster: Controls external devices using infrared transmissions.

Microphone: Records audio and detects voice commands.

Speaker: Plays sounds, notifications, and audio.

USB Charger/Accessory Port: Connect the Charger/USB cable (included), and other optional accessories (not included).

Your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB S is powered by a rechargeable Li-Ion battery. The battery comes partially charged, and you must fully charge it before first use. A full charge takes up to 4 hours.

1. Insert the USB cable into the port on the device.

2. Connect the USB cable to the charging head, then plug the charging head into a standard AC power outlet.

3. When charging is complete, unplug the charging head from the power outlet and remove the USB cable from the device.

When the battery on your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB S is weak, the battery icon will blink and the device will sound a warning tone. In this state, the device conserves power by entering a dimming mode. When the battery level becomes too low, the device turns off automatically.

You can check the battery level by looking at the battery charge indicator in the upper-right corner of the display. You can also display a percentage value for a more precise reading by going to the Battery settings.

Turning the Device On:

Press and hold the Power/Lock key until the device vibrates and starts up.

Turning the Device Off:

1. Press and hold the Power/Lock key until the device vibrates and the Device Options menu displays.

2. At the prompt, tap Power off.

Lock the Device:

By default, the device locks automatically when the screen times out. You can also lock it manually by pressing the Power/Lock key.

Unlock the Device:

Press the Power/Lock key, and then drag your finger across the screen. You can set up more secure screen lock options in the device settings.

You can set up new accounts or log into existing ones on your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB S to access various features.

From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Accounts.

From here, you can choose to add a Google Account to use Android features like Gmail and the Play Store, or a Samsung Account for access to Samsung content and apps. Follow the on-screen prompts for the account you wish to set up.

App Shortcuts: Shortcuts to your favorite applications on the Home screen.

Apps Screen: Allows quick access to all of the Applications available.

Home Screen Indicator: Indicates which Home screen is presently displayed.

Status Bar: Displays device status icons (right) and notification icons (left).

Notifications Icons: Displays new messages and emails, notifications, available software updates, and so on.

Status Icons: Displays information about the device, such as the network signal strength, battery level, the time, and so on.

Widgets: Self-contained onscreen applications (not shortcuts). These can be placed onto any of the available screens (Home or extended).

1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen, or touch and hold an empty space on the screen.

2. Use these options to manage your screens:

Add a screen: Scroll to the end of the screens, and then tap + Add.

Remove a screen: Touch and hold on a screen, and then drag it to the Remove icon.

Set a screen as the main home screen: Tap the Main Home Screen icon at the top of a screen. This screen will be displayed when you press the Home Key.

Change the order of screens: Touch and hold on a screen, and then drag it to a new position.

Add a Shortcut to a Home Screen:

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps.

2. Touch and hold an app shortcut, and then drag it to a home screen and release it.

Remove a Shortcut or Widget:

1. Touch and hold a shortcut or widget to release it.

2. Drag the icon to the Remove icon and then release it.

Add a Widget to the Home Screen:

1. Touch and hold an empty space on the screen, and then tap Widgets.

2. Touch and hold a widget, and then drag it to a home screen and release.

Adding Folders:

1. From a Home screen, touch and hold on an app shortcut.

2. Drag the shortcut onto Create folder and release.

Enter a folder name, tap + Add to place additional apps in the folder, and tap Done on the keyboard.

Using Folders:

Open: Tap the folder to open it and access the shortcuts inside.

Add shortcuts: To add more shortcuts to the folder, touch and hold a shortcut, and then drag it onto the folder and release.

Delete: To delete a folder, touch and hold the folder until it detaches, and then drag it to Remove and release.

Customize: Tap Menu to change the folder’s color scheme.

1. From a Home screen, pinch the screen, or touch and hold an empty space on the screen.

2. Tap Wallpapers, and then choose Home screen, Lock screen, or Home and lock screens.

3. Tap a wallpaper to see a sample, and then tap Set wallpaper. You can also tap More images for additional options.

Tap: Lightly tap items to select or launch them.

Tap and Hold: Activate on-screen items by a touch and hold gesture, such as moving a widget or opening a pop-up menu.

Swipe or Slide: Lightly drag your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen to unlock it or scroll through menus.

Drag: Touch and hold an item, and then move it to a new location, like adding a shortcut to the home screen.

Pinch and Spread: “Pinch” the screen using your thumb and forefinger, or “spread” by moving your fingers apart to zoom in or out on pictures or web pages.

To enable Motions and Gestures, go to the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Motions and gestures. From there, you can enable the following:

Mute/pause: When on, you can mute incoming calls and pause playback by turning the device screen-side down, or by covering the screen with your hand. You can also use Smart pause to have the device pause video playback when you look away from the screen.

Palm swipe to capture screen: When on, you can create a copy of the current screen by swiping the side of your hand across the screen, from left to right or right to left. The screen shot is saved to the clipboard and to the Screenshots folder.

Notification Icons:

New Gmail has arrived.

New email has arrived.

Connected to a computer using a USB cable.

Device Status Icons:

Battery is fully charged.

Battery is charging.

Battery is Low.

GPS is enabled.

Vibrate mode is enabled.

Mute mode is enabled.

Wi-Fi is active.

A Wi-Fi network is available.

Wi-Fi Direct is active.

1. Swipe down on the Status Bar to display the Notification Panel.

2. Scroll down the list to see notification details.

Tap an item to open it.

To clear a single notification, drag the notification left or right. Tap X Delete all to clear all notifications.

3. To close the Notification Panel, swipe upward from the bottom of the screen or tap Back.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Device tab. Alternatively, from the Notification panel, tap View all > Edit.

2. Tap Notification panel for options:

Brightness and volume: Toggle the ability to adjust screen brightness and volume from the Notification Panel.

Customize Quick setting buttons: Tap and drag buttons to reorder them. Tap Reset to use the default layout.

Recommended apps: Tap ON/OFF to show recommended apps on the Notification Panel after certain actions, such as connecting earphones. Tap Recommended apps to configure which apps to show.

Activate Multi Window:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Device tab > Multi window.

2. Tap ON/OFF to activate.

You can also tap Open in multi window view to automatically view content in Multi window when you open files from My Files or Video player, or attachments from email.

Using Multi Window:

1. Swipe the right edge of the screen toward the center to display the Multi window panel. After a few seconds, the panel will be hidden again.

2. Tap the Multi window tab to display the tray, and then drag apps to the windows.

Change the Order of Apps:

1. Tap the Multi window tab to display the tray.

2. Tap and hold an app, drag it to a new position in the tray and then drop it.

Choose Apps to Display:

1. Tap the Multi window tab to display the tray.

2. Tap Panel Controls > Edit for options:

To remove an app: Tap and drag it off of the panel and place it in the storage area.

To add an app: Tap and drag it from the storage area to the panel.

To relocate an app: Tap and drag it to a new location.

Create a Window Group:

If you often use two apps together, you can create a window group for quick access. Open the two apps in Multi window, then tap Panel Controls > Create.

Instead of typing, you can speak your text input.

1. On the Samsung Keyboard, tap the Google Voice Type icon (microphone).

2. Speak your text.

To customize Google Voice Typing settings, refer to the “Language and Input Settings” section of your device’s settings menu.

You can uninstall or disable apps you download and install. Pre-loaded apps cannot be uninstalled.

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps.

2. Tap Menu > Uninstall/disable apps. Apps that can be uninstalled will show a minus icon.

3. Tap the minus icon on an app and then follow the prompts to uninstall it.

Choosing a View:

1. From a Home screen, tap Apps.

2. Tap Menu > View type.

3. Tap an option:

Customizable grid: The default view, which allows you to touch and hold on apps to move them from screen to screen.

Alphabetical grid: Icons are arranged in a grid, in A-Z order.

Apps Screen Options:

From the Apps screen, tap Menu for these options:

Edit: Touch and hold an app icon then drag it to create a folder, create a new page, or view app info.

Create folder: Create a new folder to hold app icons.

Set wallpaper: Set the Home screen, Lock screen, or Home and lock screens wallpaper.

Uninstall/disable apps: Remove an app that you downloaded.

Show disabled apps: Display disabled apps and make them visible again.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Camera.

2. Use the display screen as a viewfinder to compose your shot.

3. Press the Volume key up or down to zoom in or out, or pinch/spread two fingers on the screen to zoom.

4. Tap the screen to focus on a specific area.

5. Tap the camera icon to take the picture.

While in the Camera app, tap MODE, and then scroll up or down the screen at the right side to select a mode. Available modes include:

Auto: Allows the camera to evaluate the surroundings and determine the ideal mode for the photo.

Beauty face: Take a photo with lightened faces for gentler images.

Panorama: Take a photo composed of many photos strung together.

Dual camera: Take pictures and record videos using the front and rear cameras at the same time.

Shot & more: Take a quick burst of photos and apply effects to them.

Best photo: Take a series of photos, and then save the best one.

Best face: Take multiple group shots at the same time and combine them to create the best possible image.

Eraser: Erase the movements of moving subjects in the background.

Drama: Take a series of photos and combine them to create an image that shows trails of the movement.

Panning shot: Use this setting for fast-moving subjects.

Sound & shot: Take a photo with a few seconds of sound.

Rich tone (HDR): Take photos without losing details in bright and dark areas.

Manage modes: Select which shooting modes to display when you tap Modes.

Download: Download additional shooting modes from the Samsung Apps store.

In the Camera app, tap the settings icon to configure options. Available options vary depending on the mode used.

Still Camera Settings:

Picture size: Select a resolution.

Burst shot: Take a series of photos of moving subjects.

Tap to take pics: Tap the image on the preview screen to take photos.

Picture stabilization: Activate or deactivate anti-shake.

Face detection: Set the device to recognize people’s faces.

ISO: Control camera light sensitivity.

Metering modes: Select a method to calculate light values (Center-weighted, Spot, Matrix).

Video Recorder Settings:

Video size: Select a resolution.

Recording mode: Select Normal, Limit for email, or Fast motion mode.

Video stabilization: Activate or deactivate anti-shake.

General Settings:

Flash: Activate or deactivate the flash.

Timer: Use for delayed-time shots.

Location tag: Attach a GPS location tag to the photo.

Storage location: Select memory location for storage.

Review pics/videos: Show photos or videos after taking them.

White balance: Select an appropriate white balance for true-to-life color.

Exposure value: Change how much light the camera’s sensor receives.

Guidelines: Display viewfinder guides.

Voice control: Set the camera to take photos with voice commands.

Reset settings: Reset the camera settings.

Adding an Account:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Accounts > Add account.

2. Select an account provider, then follow the prompts to enter your credentials and sign in.

Managing Accounts:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Accounts.

2. Select an account, then tap a setting to enable synchronization.

Finding a Contact:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts.

2. Tap the Search field and enter characters to find matching contacts.

Adding a Contact:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts.

2. Tap Add, and then tap contact fields to enter information. You can choose a storage location, assign a photo, and enter various details.

3. Tap Save to save the new contact.

Editing a Contact:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts.

2. Tap the contact to display it, and then tap Edit.

3. Tap any of the fields to add, change, or delete information.

4. Tap Save.

Create a Group:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Contacts.

2. Tap the Groups tab, and then tap Add.

3. Enter a group name and choose where to save it.

4. Tap Add member and select contact(s) to add to the new group, then tap Done.

5. Tap Save.

Add Contacts to a Group:

1. Go to the Groups tab and tap a group.

2. Tap Add, and then tap the contact(s) you want to add.

3. Tap Done.

Rename a Group:

1. Go to the Groups tab and tap a group.

2. Tap Menu > Edit group and enter a new name.

3. Tap Save.

Basic Operation:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Calculator.

2. Enter the first number using the numeric keys.

3. Tap the appropriate arithmetic function key.

4. Enter the next number.

5. To view the result, tap the = (equals) key.

Additional Functions:

Tap C to clear the current entry.

To clear the calculator history, tap Menu > Clear history.

Scientific Calculator:

Turn the device to landscape orientation to use advanced arithmetic functions, such as sin, cos, and tan.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Clock.

2. Tap Menu > Create alarm, to configure:

Time: Choose a time for the alarm.

Days: Choose the days to use this alarm.

Repeat weekly: When enabled, the alarm repeats every week.

Alarm type: Choose whether the alarm will use sound, vibration, or both.

Alarm tone: Choose a sound to play for the alarm.

Volume: Drag the slider to set the volume of the alarm.

Smart alarm: When on, the alarm will start playing at a low volume and slowly increase.

Name: Enter a name for the alarm.

3. Tap Save.

Multi-task with Pop-Up Play, which transforms your video player into a movable, resizable pop-up window.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Video.

2. Tap a video to view it.

3. Tap the Pop-Up Play icon to continue playing the video in a floating window.

Drag the window to any location on the screen.

Use two fingers to pinch or spread to resize the floating window.

There are two ways to access the Settings menu on your SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB S:

Method 1: From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings.

Method 2: From the Home screen, drag down from the Status bar to display the Notification panel, and then tap the Settings icon.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Connections tab.

2. Tap Wi-Fi > Add Wi-Fi network.

3. Enter information about the Wi-Fi network:

Tap Network SSID to enter the name of the Wi-Fi network.

Tap the Security field and select a security option. If secured, you will also need to enter your WAP’s password.

Tap Show advanced options, if you need to add advanced options such as Proxy settings or IP settings.

4. Tap Connect to store the new information and connect to your target WAP.

Wi-Fi Direct allows direct device-to-device connections via Wi-Fi, without needing a Wi-Fi network.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Connections tab.

2. Tap Wi-Fi, and then turn Wi-Fi on.

3. Tap Menu > Wi-Fi Direct. Your device automatically scans for nearby Wi-Fi Direct devices, or you can tap Scan to start scanning.

4. After scanning for devices, select a device, and then follow the prompts to complete the connection.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Connections tab.

2. Tap Bluetooth, and then turn on Bluetooth.

3. Make sure the target device is discoverable. Refer to the instructions that came with that device.

4. Tap Scan. Your device will start to scan for Bluetooth devices within range.

5. When you see the name of the target device displayed, tap the name. Your device will then automatically try to pair. If automatic pairing fails, enter the passcode supplied with the target device.

Disconnect a Paired Device:

Disconnecting breaks the connection but retains the pairing information for easy reconnection later.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Connections tab.

2. In the Bluetooth settings, tap the previously paired device.

3. Tap OK to confirm disconnection.

Delete a Paired Device (Unpairing):

Unpairing removes the connection information completely.

1. Verify your Bluetooth is active.

2. From the Bluetooth settings page, tap the settings icon next to the previously paired device, and then tap Unpair to delete the paired device.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Connections tab > Data usage for options:

Mobile data: Enable mobile data.

Limit mobile data usage: When enabled, your mobile data connection will be disabled when the specified limit is reached. Drag the red limit line to set the data usage limit.

Alert me about data usage: Receive an alert when mobile data usage reaches the warning limit you set. Drag the orange warning line to set the data usage warning limit.

Data usage cycle: Tap the menu, and then choose a time period for data usage.

2. Tap Menu for other options:

Auto sync data: When enabled, your device will synchronize with accounts automatically.

Mobile hotspots: Select Wi-Fi networks that are mobile hotspots and restrict apps from using them.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Connections tab > Screen Mirroring.

2. Tap ON/OFF to enable Screen Mirroring. Available devices are listed.

Tap Scan to find more devices.

3. Tap a device and follow the prompts to connect.

You can switch between sound modes while preserving the individual sound settings you’ve made.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings.

2. Tap Sound > Sound mode, and then choose a mode:

Sound: Your device uses the sounds, vibrations, and volume levels you’ve chosen in Sound settings.

Vibrate: Your device vibrates for notifications and alerts.

Mute: Your device plays no sounds or vibrations. On-screen reminders will still occur.

Tip: You can also access sound modes by pressing and holding the Power/Lock key, then choosing Mute, Vibrate, or Sound from the Device options menu.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Device tab.

2. Tap Screen lock to select a screen lock and level of security:

Swipe: Swipe the screen to unlock it. This option provides no security.

Pattern: A screen unlock pattern is a tap gesture you create and use to unlock your device. This option provides medium security.

Fingerprint: Use fingerprint recognition to unlock the screen. This option provides medium to high security.

PIN: Select a PIN to use for unlocking the screen. This option provides medium to high security.

Password: Create a password for unlocking the screen. This option provides high security.

None: Do not lock the screen.

Blocking Mode allows you to turn off notifications for selected features.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Device tab.

2. Tap Blocking mode. Tap ON/OFF to enable.

3. Configure options:

Tap Turn off notifications to block all notifications.

Tap Turn off alarm to block all alarms.

The Set time option allows you to set Blocking mode for a specific time range or always.

Set Up User Profiles:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Device tab.

2. Tap Users. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up a new user profile.

Use User Profiles:

To access the device with a user profile, select a profile at the top right of the locked screen. You can also switch between users by sliding down the Notification Panel and touching the current User icon.

Deleting a User or Profile:

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Device tab.

2. Tap Users.

3. Tap Delete next to a User profile to delete it. Only the Device Owner can delete other User accounts.

Use fingerprint recognition as an alternative to entering passwords in certain apps.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Device tab.

2. Tap Fingerprint Scanner to configure options:

Fingerprint manager: Register up to three fingerprints.

Change alternative password: Modify the password you set to back up your fingerprints.

Screen lock: Select a screen lock.

Verify Samsung account: Choose to verify your identity using your fingerprints when logging in to your Samsung account.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General tab.

2. Tap Accounts > (Account Type).

3. Tap the account, and then tap the delete icon to remove it.

This action permanently erases ALL data from the device, including Google or other account settings, system and application data and settings, downloaded applications, as well as your music, photos, videos, and other files.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General tab.

2. Tap Backup and reset > Factory data reset.

3. Tap Reset device and follow the prompts to perform the reset.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General tab.

2. Tap Battery for options:

Show battery percentage: Display the battery charge percentage next to the battery icon on the Status bar.

Battery Chart: The battery level displays as a percentage. The amount of time the battery has been used also displays.

Apps and OS Usage: Battery usage displays in percentages per application. Tap an item to view how it is affecting battery use.

Tap Refresh to update the listing.

Install a Memory Card:

1. Open the memory card slot cover.

2. With the gold contacts facing down, carefully slide the memory card into the slot, pushing gently until it clicks into place.

3. Close the memory card slot cover.

Unmount an SD Card:

To prevent damage to information, always unmount the card before removing it.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General tab.

2. Tap Storage > Tap Unmount SD card.

Remove a Memory Card:

1. Unmount the SD card first.

2. Open the memory card slot cover.

3. Gently press inward on the memory card so that it pops out from the slot, and carefully pull the card out.

4. Close the memory card slot cover.

Formatting an SD Card:

Formatting deletes all stored data on the card.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General tab.

2. Tap Storage > Format SD card and follow the prompts.

Encryption requires a numeric PIN or password to decrypt your tablet or memory card data each time it is powered on or connected. Ensure your battery is charged more than 80 percent before starting, as encryption can take an hour or more.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General tab.

2. Tap Security for options:

Tap Encrypt device and follow the prompts to encrypt all data on your device.

Tap Encrypt external SD card to enable the encryption on SD card data.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > General tab.

2. Tap About Device > Software update for options:

Update: View your current software version. Tap Check for new software update to check for available software updates to download and install.

Auto update: Check for software updates automatically.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Applications tab > Application manager.

2. Tap DOWNLOADED to view a list of all the downloaded applications on your device.

3. Tap an application to view and update information about it. The following options may be displayed:

Force stop: Stop an app that is misbehaving.

Uninstall: Delete the application from the device.

Move to SD card: Move this app to your microSD card.

Clear data: Clear application data from memory.

Clear cache: Clear an application’s temporary memory storage.

Clear defaults: Clear an application’s customization.

Permissions: View information about the application’s access to your device and data.

1. From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Applications tab > Default Applications.

2. Tap an app to set it as the default application for a specific action.

Alternatively, tap the clear icon next to an app to remove it as the default application.
