What are the key safety precautions when using the PROMATE PM4400IO generator?

Failure to follow safety guidelines may cause personal injury. Always read and observe all warnings on the generator and in the operator manual.

Exhaust Precautions:

• Never inhale exhaust gasses. They contain carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, and extremely dangerous gas that can cause unconsciousness or death.

• Never operate the generator indoors or in a poorly ventilated area, such as a tunnel or cave. Use extreme care when operating near people or animals. Keep the exhaust pipe free of unwanted objects.

Refueling Precautions:

• Refueling should be done outside or in a well-ventilated area. Before refilling, turn off the generator.

• DO NOT overfill the tank. If fuel is spilled, wipe it away carefully before starting the engine.

Other Safety Precautions:

Hot Parts: The muffler and other engine parts become very hot. Operate the engine in a safe area and keep children away while it is in use.

Location: DO NOT use near flammables. Use it at least 1 meter away from buildings or other facilities. Avoid using on soft ground.

During Use: DO NOT tip or move the generator while it’s running. DO NOT cover it with a box or fence it off. DO NOT unscrew the oil dipstick while running. Avoid touching the generator in the rain or with wet hands.

Electrical Safety: To prevent electric shock, ground the generator from the ground terminal. Never connect the generator to the wiring of your utility provider. Connections to a building’s electrical system must use an authorized transfer switch installed by an accredited electrician.

How do I prepare the PROMATE PM4400IO for its first use?

Before starting the generator, you must add the correct type and amount of engine oil and fuel.

Adding Engine Oil:

The PROMATE PM4400IO is equipped with a low oil shut-off and will stop if the oil level is too low. We recommend using SAE 10W-30 APISJ oil for best performance.

1. Place the generator on a flat, level surface.

2. Wipe the area around the oil fill and remove the yellow oil fill cap/dipstick (A).

3. Clean the dipstick.

4. Using an oil funnel, slowly pour oil into the oil filler neck (B) up to the “H” mark on the dipstick. Be careful not to overfill.

5. Fully tighten the oil fill cap/dipstick (A).

6. The oil level should be checked prior to each use.

Break-In Period: The first 5 hours of runtime is the break-in period. During this time, keep the load at or below 50% of the running watt rating and vary it occasionally to allow stator windings to heat and cool.

Adding Fuel:

Fuel and its vapor are extremely flammable and explosive. Add fuel in a well-ventilated area away from sparks or open flames.

• Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum 87 octane.

• DO NOT use E85 or E15 fuel.

• DO NOT mix oil with gasoline.

• Do not overfill the tank; allow space for fuel expansion.

How do I start the PROMATE PM4400IO generator?

1. Before starting, check for any loose or missing parts and any shipping damage.

2. Disconnect all electrical loads from the generator. Never start or stop the generator with electrical devices plugged in or turned on.

3. Turn the Engine Switch to the “ON” position.

4. Turn the Fuel Switch to the “ON” position.

5. Move the engine choke lever to the “START” position.

6. For Recoil start, firmly grasp the recoil handle and pull slowly until increased resistance is felt. Then, pull rapidly up and away to avoid kickback.

7. Allow the generator to operate at zero load for a few minutes after starting to let the engine and generator stabilize.

Tip: Keep the choke lever in the “START” position for only one pull. After the first pull, move the choke lever to “RUN” for subsequent pulls to avoid flooding the engine.

How do I connect electrical loads and stop the PROMATE PM4400IO generator?

Connecting Electrical Loads:

Do not exceed the maximum wattage or amperage rating of the generator or any single receptacle.

1. Let the engine stabilize and warm up for a few minutes after starting.

2. Ensure the circuit breaker on the control panel is in the ON position.

3. Plug in and turn on the desired 230V AC, single phase, 60Hz electrical loads. It is best to plug in the item with the largest load first, allow the engine to stabilize, then add the next item.

Stopping the Generator:

1. Turn off and remove any electrical loads. Never start or stop the generator with equipment connected or turned on.

2. Let the generator run at no-load for two minutes to stabilize internal temperatures.

3. Move the ON/OFF switch to the “OFF” position.

4. Close the fuel valve.

What should I do if the PROMATE PM4400IO shuts down due to low oil?

The PROMATE PM4400IO is equipped with a low oil shutdown sensor. If the oil level drops below the threshold, an oil switch will shut down the engine. You must check the oil level with the dipstick.

If the oil level is between the LOW and HIGH marks on the dipstick:

1. DO NOT try to restart the engine.

2. Contact an Authorized Promate Service Center.

3. DO NOT operate the engine until the oil level is corrected.

If the oil level is below the LOW mark on the dipstick:

1. Add the correct type of oil to bring the level to the HIGH mark.

2. Restart the engine. If the engine stops again, a low oil condition may still exist. DO NOT try to restart it again.

3. Contact Promate Service.

4. DO NOT operate the engine until the oil is at the right level.

What is the recommended maintenance schedule for the PROMATE PM4400IO?

How do I perform basic engine maintenance on the PROMATE PM4400IO?

Before performing any service, remove and ground the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.

Engine Oil Level Check:

1. Place the generator on a level surface and let the engine cool.

2. Clean around the oil dipstick, then remove it.

3. Wipe the dipstick clean, insert it fully, then remove it again to check the level.

4. If the level is low, add the recommended oil until the reading is between the L and H marks. Do not overfill.

5. Replace the oil dipstick and hand tighten.

Spark Plug Maintenance:

1. Remove the spark plug cap and clean any dirt from around the base of the spark plug.

2. Remove the spark plug using the provided wrench.

3. Inspect the spark plug for damage and clean it with a wire brush. Replace if the insulator is cracked or chipped.

4. Measure the plug gap. The correct gap is 0.028-0.031 in. (0.7-0.8 mm). Adjust if necessary.

5. Reinstall the spark plug, threading it by hand first to prevent cross-threading, then tighten with a wrench.

Air Filter Maintenance:

1. Unscrew the maintenance cover knob and remove the cover.

2. Remove the air cleaner cover and take out the sponge-like air filter element.

3. If the filter is dirty, clean it with warm, soapy water. Dry it with a clean cloth (do not twist). Apply a light coat of engine oil to the element.

4. If the filter element is damaged, replace it.

5. Reinstall the air filter element, air filter cover, and maintenance cover.

How do I store the PROMATE PM4400IO generator?

Proper storage is essential for maintaining your generator. Store it on a flat, level surface in a clean, dry environment.

Short Term Storage:

1. Fill the tank with fresh gasoline and add a correctly formulated fuel stabilizer.

2. Run the engine for 10-15 minutes to circulate the stabilizer.

3. Allow the generator to cool for at least 30 minutes, then drain the fuel tank.

4. Clean the generator and store it in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Shut off the fuel valve.

Long Term Storage (over one year):

For long term storage, gasoline must be drained from both the fuel tank and the carburetor.

1. Turn the fuel tank valve to the OFF position.

2. Place an appropriate gasoline container under the carburetor’s float bowl drain screw.

3. Loosen the float bowl drain screw and allow the fuel to drain completely.

4. Tighten the float bowl drain screw (not too tight).

5. Store the generator in a well-ventilated area, away from any open flames, heat sources, or spark-producing equipment.
