When setting up your PEAVEY ESCORT 5000, safety should be your first concern. Follow these guidelines:

• Always use grounded outlets and three-wire extension cords.

• Run sound system cables in a way that prevents the danger of tripping. If necessary, tape them down.

• Place the speaker stands and mixer on a solid, level surface.

Following these guidelines will help prevent personal injury and equipment damage, ensuring years of trouble-free use.

Follow these steps to set up the mixer and speakers for your PEAVEY ESCORT 5000:

1. Place the closed unit so the speakers are facing upward. Release the latches by lifting them up until they disengage, then remove the speakers from the case.

2. It is recommended to close the latches after the speakers are removed to avoid interference and damage.

3. Remove the speaker stands from the case. Fully extend the legs on the stand to provide a stable base and position them on a level surface. Tighten the thumbscrew on the base until snug, but do not overtighten.

4. Raise the speaker stands to the desired height, tighten the thumbscrew, and install the safety pin.

5. Place the speakers on the stands and position them to face the audience and away from the microphones.

6. Connect the included speaker cables from the jack on the lower front of the speaker to the speaker outputs on the back of the mixer. Connect the left speaker to the LEFT OUTPUT and the right speaker to the RIGHT OUTPUT.

WARNING! Only connect the included speakers to the PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 mixer. The Escort speakers provide the optimal load for the powered mixer, and using other speakers may result in equipment damage.

The PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 features a line-level Sub-Woofer output that is internally crossed over at 100Hz. To connect it, follow these steps:

1. Ensure the power for both your PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 and your sub-woofer is turned OFF.

2. Insert a 1/4″ speaker cable into the Sub-Woofer Output on the back of the Escort.

3. Insert the other end of the cable into your POWERED Sub-Woofer or power amplifier input. This connection is necessary because the output is line level and requires an amplifier to drive passive subs.

The PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 has a full-range, line-level Monitor output. To use monitors, you will need POWERED Monitors or a separate power amplifier for passive monitors. Follow these steps:

1. Turn off the power to your PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 and your monitors.

2. Insert a 1/4″ speaker cable into the Monitor Output on the back of your Escort.

3. Insert the other end of the cable into the input on your POWERED Monitors or power amplifier.

4. The level of the monitor mix can be controlled by the master monitor control knob. This output can also be used to send a full-range signal to another mixer or recording device.

The PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 mixer is designed to work with any good-quality, balanced, dynamic, or condenser microphone.

For Microphones: Connect the microphone cable to the XLR (three-pin) input connector on the mixer.

For Line-Level Devices (e.g., keyboards): Use a 1/4″ instrument cable and insert it into the center of the XLR-1/4″ combo connector on the mixer.

If you are using multiple microphones, connect them in the order they will appear on stage for easier adjustment of each microphone.

The PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 accepts various media playback devices:

• CD Player or Record Player: Use the CHANNEL 8 RCA Left and Right connections. Ensure the input selector button is in the raised position.

• MP3 Player or Smartphone: Use the 3.5mm stereo connector on CHANNEL 8. This requires a stereo 3.5mm cable. When a device is connected to the 3.5mm jack, the RCA jacks are automatically disabled. The input selector button must be in the raised position.

• USB Memory Stick: Insert the memory stick into the USB connector on CHANNEL 8. Press the input selector button “in” to the down position to activate the USB input. Use the screen and controls in the master section to navigate and play back audio files.

Note: The Escort does not allow playback through multiple media inputs simultaneously.

Before turning on your PEAVEY ESCORT 5000, follow these steps:

1. Make sure the power switch is in the OFF position.

2. Connect the IEC power cord to the receptacle on the back panel of the unit and then to a suitable electrical outlet. If using an extension cord, ensure it is a three-wire cord with an intact ground pin.

3. Ensure all speakers, microphones, and other input devices are connected.

4. Set the Master section controls to the 12 o’clock position.

5. Turn all other controls all the way down (rotated fully to the left).

6. Turn the power on by flipping the ON/OFF switch on the back of the mixer to the ON position.

Adjusting Gain and Volume Controls:

The optimal setting for the MASTER LEVEL control is marked on the control with open circles. Adjust the CHANNEL LEVEL control until you achieve the desired volume. If the volume is too loud with the channel level low, turn down the MASTER LEVEL. If the channel level is near maximum and you need more volume, raise the MASTER LEVEL so you can lower the CHANNEL LEVEL.

Adjusting Tone Controls:

For each active channel, you can adjust the HIGH, MID-MORPH, and LOW controls. Use moderation, as extreme settings can cause distortion or feedback.

• HIGH: This is a shelving EQ that varies treble frequencies (+/-15dB at 12kHz). It can remove noise or add brilliance.

• MID-MORPH: This control works at two frequencies. Turned to the left, it cuts at 250 Hz to reduce muddy sounds. Turned to the right, it boosts at 4 kHz to add intelligibility to vocals.

• LOW: This is a shelving EQ that varies bass frequencies (+/-15dB at 80Hz). It can add depth or clean up muddy sounds.

The PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 has built-in digital effects that can be adjusted in the MASTER section:

1. Select an Effect: Turn the EFFECTS SELECT knob left or right until the desired effect is shown on the display.

2. Activate the Effect: Once the effect is displayed, push the knob in to select and activate it.

3. Adjust Effect Parameter: Press the PARAMETER ADJUST button. The available parameter and its adjustments will appear on the display. Turn the EFFECTS SELECT knob to adjust the parameter.

4. Exit Parameter Adjust Mode: Press the PARAMETER ADJUST button or the EFFECTS SELECT knob again to return to the effects selection screen.

5. Adjust Channel Effect Level: On any given channel, turn the CHANNEL EFX knob to the right to hear more of the effect or to the left for less.

6. Mute Effects: The EFX MUTE button in the master section will mute the effects on all channels. There are no effects on the media channels.

The PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 has a footswitchable effects defeat feature, allowing you to mute the effects on all channels using a single-button footswitch (such as the Peavey Momentary Single-Button Switch, part number 03050680). To use it, insert the 1/4″ plug from the footswitch into the EFFECTS DEFEAT jack on the rear of the Escort mixer. Once connected, pressing the footswitch button will toggle the EFX MUTE function on and off.

The PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 supports the following audio file types for playback from a USB memory device:

Using the Graphic Equalizer:

The seven-band graphic equalizer adjusts the tonal balance of all signals going through the PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 powered mixer. It is a powerful tool for adjusting the overall sound and can help reduce or eliminate acoustic feedback. Use moderation when making adjustments.

Using the FLS® (Feedback Locating System):

The FLS LED indicators help reduce feedback (loud howling or squealing). To use this feature:

1. Start by setting all graphic EQ sliders to 0.

2. Before the audience arrives, increase the MASTER LEVEL and/or a CHANNEL LEVEL until feedback occurs.

3. Note which FLS LED illuminates above the EQ sliders.

4. Slightly lower the corresponding slider for that frequency. This reduces the gain at the feedback frequency.

5. This process can be repeated if necessary to improve gain before feedback. Only adjust the sliders a small amount to avoid adversely affecting the sound quality.

When you encounter feedback, first check the placement of microphones and speakers before using equalization (EQ). Here are some tips:

• Make sure the speakers are positioned to direct sound toward the audience and away from the microphones.

• Position microphones as close to the sound source as is reasonable. Moving a mic closer increases the volume of the sound source through the system without having to turn up the gain, which reduces the chance of feedback.

When practical, using a single microphone is preferred, as additional microphones pick up more sound from the speakers and can increase the potential for feedback. However, if you have difficulty balancing levels or cannot get sufficient gain, using more mics can be advantageous. For example, giving several singers their own microphone allows for closer placement to each singer. This increases the volume at the mic, which far outweighs the detrimental effect of using multiple mics, and allows the volume of each mic to be adjusted separately for a proper balance.

To pack the entire PEAVEY ESCORT 5000 sound system into its transportable case, follow these steps:

1. Begin by folding the speaker stands.

2. Secure the folded stands into their storage compartment using the two straps.

3. Place any optional microphone(s) in their storage compartment.

4. Put the cables in the other compartment or with the speaker stands.

5. Lay the speakers face down on top of the bottom tray.

6. Secure the four latches.

The Escort is now ready to be carried or pulled on its built-in, luggage-style wheels.

The optional mixer stand consists of two pairs of legs and the stand cross-members. To assemble it:

1. Remove the mixer stand from the case.

2. Hold the stand cross-member with the leg sockets together.

3. Fully insert one set of legs into the cross-members.

4. While still holding the cross-members together, set the legs on the floor and insert the second pair of legs.

WARNING: For safety, be sure to fully open the mixer stand and place it on a stable, level surface.
