What are the essential safety warnings for installing the OMRON F3SJ-B?
When installing the OMRON F3SJ-B, adhere to the following warnings to prevent serious injury:
• After installation, always check that the OMRON F3SJ-B operates as intended before the machine is operated. If it is not set as intended, a person may not be detected, leading to serious injury.
• Ensure a proper safety distance between the OMRON F3SJ-B and the hazardous part of the machine. The machine may not stop before a person reaches the hazardous part, resulting in serious injury.
• Install a protective structure around the machine so that a person can reach the hazardous part of the machine only by passing through the detection zone. Install the OMRON F3SJ-B so that part of the person’s body always remains in the detection zone when performing operations in the hazardous part of the machine, and so that no dead space is created. If a person can get between the hazardous part of the machine and the detection zone of the OMRON F3SJ-B, create an interlocked system to prevent the machine from restarting.
• Install the interlock reset switch in a location that provides a clear view of the entire hazardous area and where it cannot be operated from within the hazardous area.
• The OMRON F3SJ-B cannot protect a person from flying objects. Provide a separate cover or fence.
• Install the OMRON F3SJ-B so that it will not be affected by reflective surfaces. Failure to do so may result in detection being disabled, leading to serious injury.
• When using multiple sets of the OMRON F3SJ-B, install them to avoid mutual interference, for example, by using light-shielding plates.
• Be sure to tighten the main unit and the cord connectors securely.
• Do not use the OMRON F3SJ-B in a retro-reflective configuration as shown in the diagram. Doing so may disable detection. It is acceptable to bend the detection zone 90 degrees using a mirror.
• Perform all the checks described in “Chapter 5 Checklist” in the User’s Manual for all OMRON F3SJ-B units.
What are the critical wiring precautions for the OMRON F3SJ-B?
To ensure safe operation and prevent serious injury, follow these wiring precautions for the OMRON F3SJ-B:
• Connect the load between the output and the 0V line (PNP output). Connecting the load between the output and the +24V line by mistake will reverse the operating mode to “ON when blocked”, which is dangerous.
• Do not short the output line to the +24V line. This will keep the output ON at all times, which is dangerous. Also, ground the 0V side of the power supply so that a ground fault of the output line will not cause the output to turn ON.
• Configure the system using the appropriate number of control outputs to satisfy the requirements for the required safety category.
• Do not connect any of the OMRON F3SJ-B lines to a DC power supply that exceeds DC24V +20%. Also, do not connect to an AC power supply. This is dangerous because it could cause electric shock or destruction of the product.
• Be sure to turn OFF the power before wiring.
• Do not use the auxiliary output for a safety application. A person may not be detected if the OMRON F3SJ-B fails, leading to serious injury.
• All I/O lines must be insulated from hazardous voltages by double or reinforced insulation. This is dangerous because it could cause electric shock.
• Keep the cord extension within the specified length. The safety function may not work properly, resulting in danger.
What are the requirements for the DC power supply unit used with the OMRON F3SJ-B?
For the OMRON F3SJ-B to comply with IEC61496-1 and UL508, the DC power supply unit must satisfy all of the following items:
• Within the rated power supply voltage (DC24V ±20%).
• A margin must be provided for the total rated current of each device if it is connected to multiple devices.
• Conforming to EMC directives (for industrial environments).
• Double or reinforced insulation between primary and secondary circuits.
• Automatic recovery overcurrent protection characteristics.
• Output holding time of 20 ms or more.
• Must satisfy the output characteristic requirements for a Class 2 circuit or limited voltage current circuit as defined in UL508.
• Must comply with laws and regulations, regarding EMC and electrical equipment safety, in the country or region where the OMRON F3SJ-B is used. (Example: In the EU, the power supply must conform to the EMC Directive and Low Voltage Directive.)
What are the general safety warnings for using the OMRON F3SJ-B?
To ensure safe operation, adhere to the following warnings:
• To use the OMRON F3SJ-B in PSDI mode (restart by cycle operation with the sensor), an appropriate control circuit must be configured between the OMRON F3SJ-B and the machine. For details on PSDI, refer to OSHA1910.217, IEC61496-1, and other relevant standards and regulations.
• Do not disassemble, repair, or modify the product. The original safety functions will be lost, which is dangerous.
• Do not use the OMRON F3SJ-B in a flammable or explosive gas atmosphere. An explosion may occur.
• Be sure to perform daily and 6-month inspections for the OMRON F3SJ-B. The system may fail to work properly, resulting in serious injury.
• Do not use a mobile phone or transceiver in the immediate vicinity of the OMRON F3SJ-B.
What are the environmental precautions for installing and storing the OMRON F3SJ-B?
To prevent malfunction, failure, or adverse effects on product performance, observe the following precautions:
• Do not store or install in the following locations:
– Locations subject to storage or use for long periods at temperatures or humidity levels that exceed the specifications.
– Locations subject to direct sunlight, or strong ambient light.
– Locations with high humidity where condensation may occur.
– Locations with oil mist or corrosive gas.
– Locations where vibration or shock that exceeds the specifications is transmitted to the main unit.
– Locations where water may splash.
– Locations with a pollution degree of 3 or more.
– Locations where the product may come into contact with water.
– Locations where oil that may dissolve the adhesive may splash on the product.
• This is a class A product. In residential areas it may cause radio interference, in which case the user may be required to take adequate measures to reduce interference.
• Do not use the OMRON F3SJ-B at an altitude higher than 1000m.
What are the wiring and installation guidelines for the correct use of the OMRON F3SJ-B?
Follow these guidelines for proper wiring and installation:
• Make sure to perform wiring while the power supply is OFF. Otherwise, the OMRON F3SJ-B may fail to operate due to the diagnosis function.
• Do not short the output line to the +24V line. This may cause the OMRON F3SJ-B to fail.
• If extending communication lines using cables other than the dedicated cables (Model F39-JD), use cables with performance equal to or better than the dedicated cables (twisted-pair cables). Connect the shield to the 0V line.
• Check the signal name of all terminals and wire correctly.
• Check that there is nothing in the detection zone and the stable indicator is ON after power is turned ON.
• The control system must be activated 2 seconds or more after the OMRON F3SJ-B is turned ON.
• When using a commercially available switching regulator power supply, make sure to ground the FG terminal (frame ground terminal).
• When using a detection width of 1105mm or more, use the intermediate brackets in the number and at the positions described in the User’s Manual. If they are not used, the ratings and performance cannot be met.
• Install the product away from devices that generate strong high-frequency noise, or take sufficient shielding measures.
• Sharing the power supply with other devices may cause the OMRON F3SJ-B to be affected by noise or voltage drop. It is recommended that the F3SJ-B use a dedicated power supply that is not shared with other devices.
• Install the emitter and the receiver so that their top and bottom parts are on the same side.
• Tighten the cord connectors securely.
• Do not run the I/O lines of the OMRON F3SJ-B in the same conduit as high-voltage or power lines.
• In an environment where spatter, etc. may adhere, attach a cover to protect the OMRON F3SJ-B from the spatter.
What types of objects cannot be detected by the OMRON F3SJ-B?
The OMRON F3SJ-B cannot detect transparent and/or translucent objects.
