What are the minimum distance requirements for installing the MORSO S11-44 stove near flammable materials?

Distance requirements only apply if the MORSO S11-44 stove is placed near flammable materials. The minimum distances are specified on the certificate of approval on the back of the stove.

Type of stove connection Behind the stove (A) To the sides of the stove (B) To furniture
MORSO S11-44 with uninsulated flue pipe 240 mm 320 mm 800 mm
MORSO S11-44 with insulated flue pipe 150 mm 300 mm 800 mm

The distance to flammable material in front of the stove is 800 mm. It is also recommended that the stove be installed at least 10-15 cm from masonry to allow heat to circulate and to facilitate cleaning.

What are the chimney requirements for the MORSO S11-44 stove?

An efficient, modern stove like the MORSO S11-44 places great demands on the chimney. It is recommended to have a chimney sweep check the condition of your chimney.

Aperture: The chimney aperture must comply with national and local regulations. Generally, the aperture area should be at least 175 cm² (150 mm diameter) for wood-burning stoves.

Height: The chimney must be tall enough to provide a good draught. A satisfactory draught is typically achieved if the chimney extends 4 metres above the stove and at least 80 cm above the spine of the roof.

Connections: The MORSO S11-44 must never be connected to a chimney to which a gas-burning stove is already connected. If local regulations permit, it may be connected to a chimney already serving another fireplace (like an oil-burning stove).

Cleaning: The chimney and flue pipe must be fitted with cleaning doors, which must be at least the same size as the chimney’s aperture area. The chimney must be accessible for external inspection and cleaning.

How do I light my MORSO S11-44 stove for the first time?

The first few times you light the MORSO S11-44, the fire should be moderate so that the heat-resistant paint can harden before firing more vigorously. During this hardening phase, the paint may develop obnoxious smoke and smell, which is normal. Ensure the room is well ventilated during this period.

To build up an insulating layer of ashes, it is recommended that you burn 1-1.5 kg (2-3 pounds) of kindling wood the first time you use the stove. Thereafter, always keep a 1 cm layer of ashes in the bottom of the combustion chamber.

What are the step-by-step instructions for lighting and fuelling the MORSO S11-44?

1. A layer of embers is formed quickly when lit with 2 kindling tablets or similar, along with approx. 1-1.5 kg of dry kindling. Place the kindling sachets evenly under the top layer of kindling.

2. Open the secondary air supply completely with the regulation handle beneath the door by turning it completely towards the right. Note: Primary air is not used when firing with wood.

3. After the paper/solid alcohol tablets have caught fire, leave the fire door ajar so that the chimney draws well.

4. When you see that the chimney is hot enough to draw (after 5-10 minutes), close the door. A thick layer of embers will have been formed in the combustion chamber after another 15-20 minutes.

5. Re-stoking should normally be carried out while embers still remain. Distribute the embers in the bottom, ensuring most of them are at the front of the stove.

6. Place 2 pieces of wood of 0.5 kg each and approx. 20-22 cm long over the embers in a single layer, with a distance of approx. 1 cm.

7. Open the air supply to maximum and close the door; the fresh wood will then ignite within a couple of minutes.

8. Reduce the amount of combustion air to the desired position. Optimal combustion will continue until there are glowing embers in the bed. Make sure there is always enough air (oxygen) to maintain clear, lasting flames.

9. A new portion of wood can be added by repeating steps 5 and 6.

What kind of fuel should I use in my MORSO S11-44 stove?

The MORSO S11-44 is EN-approved for burning wood. You should not fire with wet or unseasoned wood. Wood should be stored under a roof for at least 1 year (preferably 2 years) with free access to wind, and have a moisture content of less than 20%.

The stove is also capable of burning other solid fuels such as approved manufactured smokeless coal or good quality anthracite (stove nuts).

IMPORTANT:

• BITUMINOUS HOUSE COAL SHOULD NEVER BE USED IN YOUR STOVE.

• Never use driftwood, as its high salt content damages the stove and chimney.

• Do not use impregnated wood, painted wood, or chipboard as they emit poisonous smoke and fumes.

• Liquid fuel may not be used in the stove.

The maximum quantity of fuel is approx. 2 kg/hour (max. 2 pieces of wood each time you re-stoke). The maximum length of fuel is 30 cm.

How do I operate the air supplies on the MORSO S11-44?

The MORSO S11-44 has three air supplies, regulated with the handle beneath the door.

Closed Position: When the handle is in the centre position, the air supply for combustion is closed.

Firing with Wood: Only the secondary air supply is used. This preheated air is supplied when the handle is turned towards the right.

Firing with Solid Fuel: Primary air is used for approved manufactured smokeless fuel. This is supplied when the handle is turned towards the left.

Continuous Air Supply: A third, continuous preheated air supply cannot be regulated. It feeds air to the combustion right above the fire to ensure all gasses from the wood are burned.

If the chimney draft is poor, a certain amount of primary air can facilitate kindling, but this may cause temporary soot formation on the bricks and glass.

What causes poor draught in the chimney for my MORSO S11-44 and how can I improve it?

Poor draught can cause smoke to come out of the stove when the fire door is opened. The draught in the chimney is the result of the difference between the high temperature in the chimney and the cooler temperature outside.

The draught will be reduced when:

• The temperature difference is too low (e.g., a poorly insulated chimney).

• The outside temperature is too high (e.g., during the summer).

• There is no wind.

• The chimney is not tall enough.

• Air is entering the chimney in undesired places (e.g., through cracked joints).

• Unsealed, unused fireplaces are connected to the chimney.

• The flue pipe and chimney are clogged with soot.

• The house is too tightly sealed.

A good draught is achieved when:

• There is a big difference between the temperature in the chimney and outside.

• The weather is clear and there is a good wind.

• The chimney is of the proper height (Minimum 4 metres above the stove, and clear of the spine of the roof).

If the chimney is cold, it may help to light (burn up) a rolled-up newspaper in the chimney’s cleaning door to improve draught.

How do I clean and maintain my MORSO S11-44 stove?

External Maintenance:

The cast surface is painted with heat-resistant Senotherm paint. Maintain it by vacuuming with a soft brush attachment or wiping it with a dry, dust-free cloth. If the painted surface becomes greyish, it can be freshened up with Morsø spray paint.

Internal Maintenance (Glass Window):

If used correctly, little or no soot will be deposited on the ceramic glass. If soot forms, it will burn away during normal combustion. For heavy sooting due to incorrect operation, use Morsø Glass Cleaner when the glass is cold. Avoid stoking the stove with wood long enough to press against the glass.

Cleaning the Stove Internally:

Layers of ash and soot will form on the topside of the baffle plates. The baffle plates can be taken out for normal cleaning, which provides access to the flue chamber above. Clean the baffle plates before reinserting them, ensuring they are properly put in place.

Ash Removal:

There should be a layer of approx. 1 cm of insulating ash in the bottom of the combustion chamber. If the layer is too thick, brush it down into the ash pan. Empty the ash pan before it gets completely full. Embers can be concealed in the ash for several days, so store it in a non-flammable container before disposal.

Gaskets:

Over time, the gaskets in the door will wear and should be replaced as needed to prevent wild combustion. Use the original Morsø gasket kit.

What are the reasons for a sooty glass window on my MORSO S11-44?

If the glass window on your MORSO S11-44 becomes thoroughly covered in soot, it may be due to one of the following reasons:

• The fuel is too wet.

• The pieces of fuel are too big/uncut.

• The combustion temperature is too low.

• There is insufficient air for the combustion.

Why are the internal parts of my MORSO S11-44 wearing out too quickly?

The baffles and other components in direct contact with the fire are wearing parts. Overly vigorous use will accelerate the burn-through. The reasons for overly rapid wear of internal parts include:

• The stove is fired too vigorously.

• Use of very dry wood (e.g., wood from old furniture).

• Too much soot on top of the baffles.

• Too much ash in the ash pan.

If the baffles are damaged and not replaced, the top plate will be exposed to high temperatures that may damage it as well.

What are the safe heating practices for the MORSO S11-44?

To heat safely for the environment and yourself, follow these guidelines:

Use only dry wood: Use only dry (max. 20% moisture content) and untreated wood. The fuel must be split and 8 – 12 cm thick.

Light correctly: Light with dry kindling (use 1 – 2 kg). Leave the door ajar and stay close to the stove during the lighting phase.

Maintain a good layer of embers: Be certain to have a good layer of embers before refilling. The wood should light within 2 minutes. If the logs do not ignite it may, in an extreme case, cause the flue gases to ignite which may pose a risk to material damage or personal injury.

Refuel properly: When refuelling, use 2 – 3 pieces of wood – no more than 2 – 2.5 kg.

Ensure adequate air: Maintain clear and yellow flames.

Never burn overnight: Leaving your stove lit overnight harms the environment and constitutes very poor use of the wood as the gases do not ignite at low temperature, but settle as soot in the chimney and stove.
