How should I unpack and install my MORSO S11-43 stove?
The MORSO S11-43 stove weighs between 70 to 110 kg (150 to 240 pounds). It is recommended that two people unpack and install the stove to avoid damage.
When shipped, the stove is prepared for installation with a top flue exit. The cast-iron flue collar and ball stop are included and should be installed with the chimney pipe. It is important to observe all national and local regulations regarding the installation of wood-burning stoves, chimney connections, and chimney installation. You, your technical adviser, or workman are responsible for complying with all applicable regulations.
It is wise to consult your local chimney sweep before installing the MORSO S11-43. The chimney sweep must be notified once the stove is installed. They will inspect the installation and schedule sweeping intervals. If the chimney has not been used for some time, it must be inspected for cracks, bird nests, etc., before use.
What are the minimum distance requirements for the MORSO S11-43 stove from flammable materials?
Distance requirements apply only if the MORSO S11-43 is placed near flammable materials. The minimum distances are specified on the certificate of approval on the back of the stove. The general requirements are as follows:
| Type of stove pipe | Behind the stove (A) | To the sides of the stove (B) | To furniture |
| Uninsulated flue pipe | 240 mm | 320 mm | 800 mm |
| Insulated flue pipe | 150 mm | 300 mm | 800 mm |
Additionally, the distance to flammable material in front of the stove is 800 mm. It is also recommended to install the stove at least 10-15 cm from masonry to allow heat to circulate and to facilitate cleaning. A layer of wallpaper on a brick wall is normally regarded as non-flammable material.
What are the floor and chimney requirements for the MORSO S11-43 stove?
Floor Requirements:
If the stove is installed on a flammable floor, national and local regulations must be observed regarding the size of the non-flammable underlying surface that must cover the floor beneath the stove. The underlying surface must be able to bear the weight of the stove and, if applicable, the steel chimney.
Chimney Requirements:
An efficient, modern stove like the MORSO S11-43 places great demands on the chimney. Have a chimney sweep check its condition. The chimney aperture must comply with national and local regulations, generally measuring at least 175 cm² (150 mm diameter) for wood-burning stoves. An overly large chimney will require too much energy to heat, so an insulating chimney liner of the proper diameter is recommended to increase draught and improve fuel economy.
For a satisfactory draught, the chimney should extend 4 metres above the stove and at least 80 cm above the spine of the roof. The chimney and flue pipe must have cleaning doors and be accessible for external inspection.
Important: The wood-burning stove must never be connected to a chimney to which a gas-burning stove is already connected.
How do I connect the flue pipe to my MORSO S11-43 stove?
Mounting the flue collar pointing upwards (Top Exit):
From the factory, the MORSO S11-43 is prepared for a top exit flue collar. To facilitate installation, take the baffle plates out of the stove. Fasten the enclosed cast-iron flue collar to the top of the stove with the included screws. The 160 mm long rod (ball stop) should also be fitted when installing the chimney to prevent the chimney sweep from damaging the baffle plates.
Mounting the flue collar to the rear:
Take the baffle plates out of the stove. Remove the knockout cover from the rear heat shield and rear convector plate with firm taps of a hammer. Unscrew the round cover from the back panel and reinstall it in the hole in the top panel. Fasten the enclosed cast-iron flue collar to the back of the stove with the included screws. The ball stop is not used for a rear flue collar installation. Finally, place the enclosed cover plate in the top panel to cover the flue exit hole.
Ensure the baffles are correctly assembled before lighting the stove.
Connecting to a brick chimney:
Securely brick a flue bushing into the wall and insert the flue pipe into it. The pipe should only go to the inside of the chimney aperture, not extend into the opening. Seal the joints between the stove/pipe and pipe/wall bushing with glass tape.
Connecting to a steel chimney:
If installing a chimney straight up through the ceiling, you must comply with all building regulations concerning clearances to combustible materials. The stove must not bear the weight of the chimney system. The chimney must be properly supported at the ceiling and roof levels. Excessive weight on the stove can cause damage not covered by the guarantee.
What should I do if my MORSO S11-43 has insufficient draught?
If smoke comes out of the MORSO S11-43 when the fire door is opened, it is likely due to poor draught in the chimney. This stove requires at least 12 PA of chimney draught for satisfactory combustion. If in doubt, have your chimney sweep measure the draught.
The draught will be reduced when:
• The temperature difference between the chimney and the outside is too low (e.g., a poorly insulated chimney).
• The chimney is cold. It may help to light a rolled-up newspaper in the chimney’s cleaning door before lighting the stove.
• The outside temperature is too high, such as during the summer.
• There is no wind.
• The chimney is not tall enough and sits in the lee of the roof or tall trees.
• Air is entering the chimney through cracks, leaks, or unsealed, unused fireplaces.
• The flue pipe and chimney are clogged with soot.
• The house is too tightly sealed. A fresh air supply may be needed. If the house is very tightly sealed, it may be necessary to install an air grate in the room to provide enough air for combustion.
A good draught is achieved when:
• There is a big temperature difference between the chimney and outside.
• The weather is clear and there is a good wind.
• The chimney is the proper height (minimum 4 metres above the stove) and clear of the spine of the roof.
How do I operate the air supplies on the MORSO S11-43 stove?
The MORSO S11-43 is constructed with three air supplies, regulated with the handle beneath the door.
• Closed Position: When the handle is in the centre position, the air supply for combustion is closed.
• Firing with Wood: Only the secondary air supply is used. Turn the handle towards the right to supply preheated secondary air.
• Firing with Solid Fuel: Primary air is used for approved manufactured smokeless fuel. Supply primary air by turning the handle towards the left.
If the chimney draft is poor, a small amount of primary air can facilitate kindling, but this may cause temporary soot formation on the bricks and glass.
A third, continuous, preheated air supply cannot be regulated. It feeds air to the combustion right above the fire to ensure all gases from the wood are burned.
What type of fuel should I use in my MORSO S11-43 stove?
The MORSO S11-43 is approved for burning wood. You should not fire with wet or unseasoned wood. Wood should be stored under a roof for at least 1 year, and preferably 2 years, with free access to wind. Use wood once the moisture content is less than 20%.
• Never use bituminous house coal.
• Never use driftwood, as its high salt content damages the stove and chimney.
• Never use impregnated wood, painted wood, or chipboard, as they emit poisonous smoke and fumes.
• Liquid fuel must not be used in the stove.
Pieces of wood with a diameter exceeding 10 cm should always be chopped. The maximum length of fuel in the stove is 30 cm. The maximum quantity of fuel is approx. 2 kg/hour (max. 2 pieces of wood each time you re-stoke).
What is the correct procedure for lighting and fuelling the MORSO S11-43 stove?
First Firing:
The first few times you light the MORSO S11-43, the fire should be moderate so that the heat-resistant paint can harden. During this phase, the paint may develop obnoxious smoke and smell, which is normal. Ensure the room is well-ventilated.
Lighting Instructions:
1. A layer of embers is formed quickly when lit with 2 kindling tablets (or similar) and approx. 1-1.5 kg of dry kindling. Place the kindling sachets evenly under the top layer of kindling.
2. Open the secondary air supply completely by turning the regulation handle beneath the door fully to the right. (Primary air is not used when firing with wood).
3. After the kindling has caught fire, leave the fire door ajar so that the chimney draws well.
4. After 5-10 minutes, when the chimney is hot enough to draw, close the door. A thick layer of embers will form after another 15-20 minutes.
Refuelling/Re-stoking:
5. Re-stoking should be done while embers still remain. Distribute the embers in the bottom, with most at the front of the stove.
6. Place 2 pieces of wood (0.5 kg each, approx. 20-22 cm long) over the embers in a single layer, with about 1 cm distance between them.
7. Open the air supply to maximum and close the door. The fresh wood will ignite within a couple of minutes.
8. Once the wood is burning well, reduce the amount of combustion air to the desired position for optimal combustion.
Important: It is crucial that the fresh quantity of wood starts to burn quickly. If the wood only smoulders, a strong build-up of smoke can occur, which may cause an explosive ignition of flue gases. Always ensure there is enough air (oxygen) to maintain clear, lasting flames.
What are the best practices for operating my MORSO S11-43 stove safely?
• Refuelling on a low fire bed: Refuelling must be carried out onto a sufficient quantity of glowing embers and ash to ensure the new fuel charge ignites in a reasonable period. If there are too few embers, add suitable kindling to prevent excessive smoke.
• Fuel overloading: Do not exceed the maximum amount of fuel specified (approx. 2 kg/hour). Overloading can cause excess smoke.
• Operation with door left open: The appliance must not be operated with the door left open except as directed in the lighting instructions, as this can cause excess smoke.
• Overnight Burning: It is strongly recommended not to leave your MORSO S11-43 lit at night. It harms the environment and is poor use of wood, as the gases settle as soot in the chimney and stove. Extreme conditions could cause an explosive ignition.
• Summer Firing: When firing in the summer with minimal heat need, combustion will be poor. The stove provides too much heat, so combustion should be reduced. Always ensure there are lasting flames until the wood becomes charcoal. For a weaker fire, stoke up using less wood.
How can I compare the energy content of wood to oil for my MORSO S11-43?
The following table shows the number of cubic metres of different types of wood (with 20% moisture content) required to equal the energy content of 1000 litres of oil.
| Type of wood (moisture content 20%) | No. of cubic metres per 1000 litre oil |
| Oak | 7.0 |
| Beech | 7.0 |
| Ash | 7.2 |
| Sycamore | 7.5 |
| Birch | 8.0 |
| Elm | 8.9 |
| Common spruce | 10.4 |
| Silver fir | 10.9 |
How do I perform routine maintenance on my MORSO S11-43 stove?
External Maintenance:
The cast surface is painted with heat-resistant Senotherm paint. Maintain it by vacuuming with a soft brush attachment or wiping it with a dry, dust-free cloth. If the stove is used too vigorously, the surface may turn a greyish tinge. It can be freshened up with Morsø spray paint, available from your local retailer.
Internal Maintenance (Glass Window):
If used correctly, little or no soot will be deposited on the ceramic glass. If soot forms during lighting, it will burn away once normal combustion begins. For heavy soot due to incorrect operation, use Morsø Glass Cleaner on cold glass. Avoid stoking the stove with wood so long that it presses against the glass when the door is closed.
Internal Maintenance (Wearing Parts):
The baffles and other components in direct contact with the fire are wearing parts. When used correctly, they will last for many years, but vigorous use will accelerate burn-through. These parts are easily replaced. If damaged baffles are not replaced, the top plate may be exposed to high temperatures and become damaged.
Gaskets:
Over time, door gaskets will wear and should be replaced as needed to prevent wild combustion. Use the original Morsø gasket kit.
What causes sooty glass or rapid wear of internal parts on my MORSO S11-43?
Reasons for a sooty glass window:
• The fuel is too wet.
• The pieces of fuel are too big/uncut wood.
• The combustion temperature is too low.
• Insufficient air for the combustion.
Reasons for overly rapid wear of internal parts:
• The stove is fired too vigorously.
• Use of very dry wood (e.g., from old furniture).
• Too much soot on top of the baffles.
• Too much ash in the ash pan.
How should I clean my MORSO S11-43 stove and handle the ash?
Cleaning the Stove:
Layers of ash and soot will form on the topside of the baffle plates as a result of the chimney draft and after a sweep. For normal cleaning, the baffle plates may be taken out of the stove, giving access to the flue chamber above. Clean the baffle plates before reinserting them, ensuring they are put back in place properly. The chimney sweep must remove soot from the stove in addition to sweeping the chimney and cleaning the flue pipe.
Handling Ash:
There should be a layer of approx. 1 cm of insulating ash in the bottom of the combustion chamber for a high combustion temperature. If the layer is too thick, brush it down into the ash pan. Empty the ash pan before it gets completely full to prevent insulation around the grate, which can speed up burn-through.
Ash will need to be taken away by a waste disposal company. Embers can be concealed in the ash for several days, so store the ash in a container made of non-flammable material before pouring it into a rubbish bag. Ash from a wood-burning stove is not beneficial for your garden as fertiliser and may contain heavy metals if you have burned items like colour brochures or treated wood.

What is the summary for heating safely with the MORSO S11-43?
To heat safely for the environment and yourself with your MORSO S11-43, follow these key steps:
• Use only dry wood: Use only dry (max. 20% moisture content) and untreated wood. The fuel must be split and 8 – 12 cm thick.
• Light correctly: Light with dry kindling (use 1 – 2 kg). Leave the door ajar and stay close to the stove during the lighting phase.
• Maintain a good layer of embers: Be certain to have a good layer of embers before refilling. The wood should light within 2 minutes. If the logs do not ignite it may, in an extreme case, cause the flue gases to ignite which may pose a risk to material damage or personal injury.
• Refuel properly: When refuelling use 2 – 3 pieces of wood – no more than 2 – 2.5 kg.
• Ensure adequate air: Maintain clear and yellow flames.
• Never burn overnight: Do not leave the stove burning overnight.
