The following table outlines the normal service intervals for the MAZDA PROTEGE5 2003. Rotate tires every 7,500 miles or sooner if needed.

Key to Maintenance Codes:

A. Replace: Engine oil/replace filter.

B. Inspect: Cooling system, drive belts, fuel lines and hoses, idle speed, brake lines and hoses, disc and drum brakes, steering operation and linkages, front suspension ball joints, drive shaft dust boots, chassis and body bolts and nuts, exhaust system heat shields, refrigerant amount and compressor operation. Replace: Air filter, spark plugs.

C. Replace: Engine coolant.

D. Inspect: Engine valve clearance, hoses and tubes for emission system; inspect/replace engine timing belt.

The turn signal and lighting control lever is located on the steering column.

Lights:

OFF: Lights off.

First Notch: Tail, dashboard, and parking lights on. Rotate knob to the first notch.

Second Notch: Tail, dashboard, parking, and headlights on. Rotate knob to the second notch.

High Beams:

High beams on/off: Push the lever forward for high beams. Pull it back for low beams.

To flash high beams: Pull the lever back slightly and release.

Turn Signals:

Turn signals right/left: Move the lever up or down.

Fog Light Switch:

Push to activate/deactivate; functions only with headlight low beams on.

The wiper/washer control lever operates as follows:

Single wipe: Push the lever up.

Washer: Pull back. This also operates the wipers.

Intermittent wiper: One click down.

Normal wiper speed: Two clicks down.

High-speed wiper: Three clicks down.

To activate the rear interval wiper: Rotate the knob up to INT.

To activate the rear normal speed wiper: Rotate the knob up to ON.

To activate the rear washer: Rotate the knob to the washer symbol and release.

The cruise control system operates above 25 mph.

Turn System On/Off: Press MAIN (1) to turn the system on or off.

Set Speed: Accelerate to the desired speed and press SET/COAST (2).

Accelerate: Press and hold RESUME/ACCEL (3) and release the button at the desired speed. Alternatively, press and release (3); each tap equals plus 1 mph.

Decelerate: Press and hold SET/COAST (2) and release the button at the desired speed. Alternatively, press and release (2); each tap equals minus 1 mph.

Cancel: Press CANCEL (4) or MAIN (1), tap the brake pedal, or depress the clutch pedal.

The ignition must be on to operate the power windows. All windows are controlled from the driver’s armrest, while passenger doors have separate switches.

Driver’s window: One-touch-down feature. Push down firmly and release; the window goes down all the way. Pull the switch back briefly to stop. Press lightly and hold for normal operation.

Passenger window switches: Push down and hold to open, pull back and hold to close.

Power window lockout switch: Press down until it clicks. Only the driver’s window switches will operate. Press again and passenger window switches will function again.

Cruise control on: Lights when cruise control is set.

Engine oil-pressure warning light: Stop the car when safe and turn off the engine; check the oil level.

Brake system: Indicates parking brake is on or low brake fluid.

Always fasten seat belts: Reminder to fasten seat belts.

Air bag/front seat belt pretensioner system: If the light flashes or stays on, the air bags/front seat belt pretensioners may not operate in an accident; dealer inspection is required.

Charging system warning light: Indicates charging system malfunction; dealer inspection required.

Door-ajar: Indicates a door is not closed.

Low washer fluid level: Indicates washer fluid is low.

Low fuel: Indicates fuel level is low.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS): Indicates ABS malfunction, normal brakes only; dealer inspection required.

Check engine: Dealer inspection required.

Overdrive off indicator: Indicates overdrive is disabled.

Manual door locks: To lock, press down on the tab. To unlock, pull up the tab.

Power door lock switches: To lock or unlock all doors, press the bottom or top of the door switch.

Locking without a key: With the door open, press LOCK on the door switch, exit the car, and close the doors.

Unlock with key: Use the key to unlock either front door and hold in the unlock position; all doors will unlock.

Remote entry system: Press LOCK to lock doors. Press UNLOCK for the driver’s door; press again within 5 seconds for all other doors. Press the Panic alarm button to sound the horn and flash lights.

Childproof locks: Located at the edge of rear doors. Slide the switch outward to activate (door opens from outside only). Slide the switch inward to cancel.

Fore-aft adjustment: Lift the lever and hold, slide the seat, and release the lever.

Raise/lower front of seat: Turn the dial backward or forward.

Raise/lower rear of seat: Turn the dial backward or forward.

Seat back angle: Lift and hold the lever, lean forward or backward to tilt the seat, and release the lever.

Head restraint: To raise or lower, pull up or hold the release button and push down.

Split fold-down rear seatbacks: To fold, pull the release knob and push the seatback down. To return and lock, push the seatback firmly until latched.

Folding rear seat bottoms (Protegé5 only): To fold rear seats flat:

1. Remove head restraints.

2. Pull the strap and lift the end of the seat bottom up and forward.

3. Lift the seat bottom forward.

4. Pull the release knob and push the seatback down.

Temperature control: Rotate the knob to blue for cool or red for warm.

Air Conditioning: Press to activate/deactivate. Note that the floor position and both defrost positions will turn the A/C ON and switch the air intake to fresh air.

Fan control: Rotate the knob right or left to increase or decrease speed. Turn to 0 to shut the system off.

Air Intake Control: Slide the lever to select recirculate (inside air) or fresh air.

Air flow selections:

– Air to dash

– Air to dash and floor

– Air to floor

– Air to floor and windshield

– Defrost, air to windshield

Rear window defogger: Press to activate/deactivate.

The gearshift must be in Park or Neutral to start the engine, and it must be in Park to remove the ignition key.

P (Park): To move from Park, press firmly on the brake pedal, then press the release button on the gearshift.

R (Reverse): Select for reversing.

N (Neutral): No gear engaged.

D (Overdrive): For normal driving; shifts through four forward gears automatically.

D (Overdrive Off): Provides extra power and increased engine braking. Stops 3rd-4th gear cycling in stop/go driving. Press the Overdrive Switch to enable/disable the overdrive gear.

2 (Second Gear): Provides extra power and increased engine braking. Use to reduce wheel spin when starting on slippery surfaces.

1 (First Gear): Provides extra power and increased engine braking.

Manual shift mode: Move shift lever from D to M. Then move M to D for automatic mode.

Clock Setting: Press the Clock button and hold until a beep is heard. Press the upper or lower portion of the Tuning/Audio Control button to advance Hours/Minutes. Press the Clock button again to set.

Power/Volume: Press to turn on/off; rotate to increase/decrease volume.

Memory preset buttons: Tune to a station, press and hold a preset button until a beep is heard.

SEEK/TRACK/APC: Press to automatically seek higher/lower frequency (Radio) or select next/previous track (CD).

CD Player: Press CD to play. To load multiple discs (if equipped), press and hold LOAD until a beep is heard and insert when “In” is displayed.

Interior light switch:

ON = Light always on

OFF = Light off

DOOR = Light on when door is open

Map/reading lights: Press the switches to turn on/off.

Sunroof: To tilt or close the rear of the sunroof, press the rear/front of the switch. To open or close, press and hold the rear/front of the switch.

1. Windshield washer reservoir

2. Power steering fluid reservoir (Level should be between MIN and MAX lines)

3. Engine oil dipstick (Fluid should be between F and L)

4. Engine oil filler cap

5. Automatic transaxle fluid dipstick (Check with engine on and at operating temperature)

6. Brake/clutch fluid reservoir (Fill to MAX mark with DOT 3 fluid)

7. Battery

8. Fuse panel

9. Engine coolant reservoir (Level should be between COLD FILL RANGE indicator marks)

10. Air filter

Tire economy and tips: Check pressure at least monthly when tires are cold. Tires should be of the same make, kind, and dimension. Maintain correct front-end alignment and tire balance.

Rotation: Rotate tires at 3,750-mile intervals.

Tire pressure: The decal on the driver’s door provides tire pressure information.

Tire chains: Use only SAE Class “S” chains; install on front tires as tightly as possible and re-tighten periodically. Do not use chains on dry roads. Use on steel wheels only to avoid damage to aluminum wheels.

For the first 600 miles: Avoid heavy braking and acceleration. Drive at varying road and engine speeds.

Remote trunk-lid release (Protegé Sedan): Pull the lever up located near the driver’s seat.

Emergency trunk release (Protegé Sedan): Allows you to escape should you become locked in the trunk. Pull the “T” handle to open; the “T” handle will glow if exposed to light.

Rear seatback lock: Move the lever to lock or unlock.
