The following table outlines the normal service intervals for the MAZDA PROTEGE 2003. Rotate tires every 7,500 miles or sooner if needed.

Service Key:

A. Replace: Engine oil/replace filter

B. Inspect: Cooling system, drive belts, fuel lines and hoses, idle speed, brake lines and hoses, disc and drum brakes, steering operation and linkages, front suspension ball joints, drive-shaft dust boots, chassis and body bolts and nuts, exhaust system heat shields, refrigerant amount and compressor operation. Replace: Air filter, spark plugs

C. Replace: Engine coolant

D. Inspect: Engine valve clearance, hoses and tubes for emission system; inspect/replace engine timing belt (See Owner’s Manual)

*Special operating conditions

Windshield Wiper/Washer Control Lever:

Single wipe: Push lever up

Washer: Pull back (also operates wipers)

Intermittent wiper: One click down

Normal wiper speed: Two clicks down

High-speed wiper: Three clicks down

Rear Window Wiper/Washer (Protegé5):

To activate rear interval wiper: Rotate knob up to INT

To activate rear normal speed wiper: Rotate knob up to ON

To activate rear washer: Rotate knob to the washer symbol and release

OFF: Lights off

Tail, dashboard, and parking lights on: Rotate knob to the first notch

Tail, dashboard, parking, and head lights on: Rotate knob to the second notch

High beams on/off: Push lever forward for high beams; pull back for low

To flash high beams: Pull lever back slightly and release

Turn signals right/left: Move lever up/down

The cruise control operates above 25 mph. Press MAIN to turn the system on/off.

To set speed: Accelerate to desired speed and press SET/COAST.

To accelerate: Press and hold RESUME/ACCEL; release the button at the desired speed. Alternatively, press and release RESUME/ACCEL; each tap increases speed by 1 mph.

To decelerate: Press and hold SET/COAST; release the button at the desired speed. Alternatively, press and release SET/COAST; each tap decreases speed by 1 mph.

To cancel: Press CANCEL or MAIN; tap the brake pedal or depress the clutch pedal.

The ignition must be on to operate the power windows.

Driver’s window: One-touch-down feature: push down firmly and release, and the window goes down all the way. Pull the switch back briefly to stop. Press lightly and hold for normal operation.

Passenger window switches: Push down and hold to open, pull back and hold to close.

Power window lockout switch: Press down until it clicks; only the driver’s window switches will operate. Press again and passenger window switches function again.

Push the fog light switch to activate or deactivate. The function only works with the headlight low beams on.

Pull the tilt steering wheel lever down to unlock the column, adjust the wheel position, and push the lever up to lock it.

Engine oil-pressure warning light: Stop car when safe and turn off engine; check oil level.

Brake system: Parking brake on or low brake fluid.

Charging system warning light: Charging system malfunction; dealer inspection required.

Air bag/front seat belt pretensioner system: If light flashes or stays on, the air bags/front seat belt pretensioners may not operate in an accident; dealer inspection required.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS): ABS malfunction, normal brakes only; dealer inspection required.

Check engine: Dealer inspection required.

Door-ajar: A door is open.

Low washer fluid level: Fluid is low.

Low fuel: Fuel is low.

Always fasten seat belts: Reminds occupants to fasten seat belts.

Manual door locks: To lock, press down on the tab. To unlock, pull up the tab.

Power door lock switches: To lock/unlock all doors, press the bottom/top of the door switch.

To lock doors without a key: With the door open, press LOCK on the door switch, exit the car, and close the doors.

To unlock with a key: Use the key to unlock either front door and hold in the unlock position; all doors will unlock. All doors lock automatically when either front door is locked with a key.

To lock doors: Press LOCK; pressing again within 5 seconds causes doors/liftgate to re-lock, horn to beep once, and hazard warning lights to flash once if doors/liftgate are properly closed.

To unlock: Press UNLOCK for the driver’s door; press again within 5 seconds for all other doors.

Panic alarm: Press the exclamation point icon button; horn sounds, parking lights flash, and illuminated entry system turns on; press any button on the transmitter to stop.

Auto-lock: After unlocking with the transmitter, all doors or the liftgate will automatically lock if a door or the liftgate is not opened within about 30 seconds.

Fore-aft adjustment: Lift lever and hold, slide seat, release lever.

Raise/lower front of seat: Turn dial backward/forward.

Raise/lower rear of seat: Turn dial backward/forward.

Seat back angle: Lift and hold lever, lean forward or backward to tilt seat, release lever.

Head restraint: To raise/lower, pull up/hold release button and push down.

Shoulder belt height adjustment: To raise/lower belt, push button, slide up/down, release button.

Split fold-down rear seatbacks: To fold, pull the release knob and push the seatback down. To return and lock, push the seatback firmly until latched.

Folding rear seat bottoms (Protegé5 only): To fold rear seats flat: Remove head restraints, pull strap and lift the end of the seat bottom up and forward; lift the seat bottom forward, pull the release knob, and push the seatback down.

Temperature control: Rotate knob to blue for cool, red for warm.

Fan control: Rotate knob right/left to increase/decrease speed, turn to 0 to shut system off.

Air Intake Control: Slide lever to select recirculate inside air (use for maximum heating/cooling or to keep odors out) or fresh air.

Air Conditioning: Press to activate/deactivate.

Rear window defogger: Press to activate/deactivate.

Maximum defrost: Set fan to maximum, temperature to maximum hot, and air flow selector knob to the defrost windshield symbol.

The gearshift must be in Park or Neutral to start the engine; it must be in Park to remove the ignition key.

P (Park): To move gearshift from Park, press firmly on the brake pedal, then press the release button on the gearshift.

R (Reverse): Reverse gear.

N (Neutral): No gear engaged.

D (Overdrive): For normal driving, shifts through four forward gears automatically.

Overdrive Switch: Press to enable/disable overdrive gear. Overdrive Off provides extra power and increased engine braking and stops 3rd-4th gear cycling in stop/go driving.

2 (Second Gear): Provides extra power and increased engine braking. Use to reduce wheel spin when starting on slippery surfaces.

1 (First Gear): Provides extra power and increased engine braking.

Move the shift lever from D to M. Then move M to D for automatic mode. Manual gear selection is achieved by moving the shifter back and forward. The shift and gear position indicator located in the instrument panel will illuminate “M” for manual mode, and the numeral for the gear position will be shown below the shift position indicator.

To set the clock: Press the CLOCK button and hold until a beep is heard. Press the upper/lower portion of the tuning/audio control button to advance Hours/Minutes. Press the CLOCK button again to set.

Interior light switch: ON = Light always on; OFF = Light off; DOOR = Light on when door is open.

Map/reading lights: Press switches on/off.

Sunroof: To open/close, press and hold rear/front of switch. To tilt/close rear of sunroof, press rear/front of switch.

The temporary spare tire is stored under the panel in the trunk. The tool bag, jack, and jack handle are also located there. To change a flat tire, follow the instructions in the Owner’s Manual. Do not exceed 50 mph with the temporary spare.

The emergency trunk release allows you to escape should you become locked in the trunk. To open, pull the “T” handle. The “T” handle will glow if exposed to light.

For the first 600 miles, avoid heavy braking and acceleration. Drive at varying road and engine speeds. Follow the same procedures with a newly overhauled engine or when brakes are replaced.

Check all fluids with the vehicle parked on a level surface and the engine off unless otherwise stated.

Engine oil dipstick: Fluid should be between F and L on the dipstick; do not fill above F.

Power steering fluid reservoir: Level should be between MIN and MAX lines.

Brake/clutch fluid reservoir: Fill to MAX mark with DOT 3 fluid; check with cap on.

Engine coolant reservoir: Level should be between COLD FILL RANGE indicator marks. Never remove the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is running or hot.

Automatic transaxle fluid dipstick: Check with engine on and at operating temperature; fluid must be between the indicator marks on the dipstick.

Windshield washer reservoir: Fill with windshield washer fluid.
