1. Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas can lead to accidents.

2. Do not operate the MAKITA DHP441 in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.

3. Keep children and bystanders away while operating the power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

1. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.

2. Do not expose the power tool to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

3. If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protected supply. Use of a GFCI reduces the risk of electric shock.

1. Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use the tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention can result in serious personal injury.

2. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

3. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to a power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool.

4. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or key left attached to a rotating part may result in personal injury.

5. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the tool in unexpected situations.

6. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

7. If devices are provided for dust extraction and collection, ensure they are connected and properly used. This can reduce dust-related hazards.

1. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct tool for your application. It will do the job better and safer at its designed rate.

2. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.

3. Disconnect the battery pack from the tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing it. This reduces the risk of accidental starting.

4. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow untrained persons to operate them.

5. Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment, binding of moving parts, breakage, and any other condition that may affect operation. If damaged, have the tool repaired before use.

6. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

7. Use the power tool, accessories, and bits in accordance with these instructions, considering the working conditions and the task to be performed. Using the tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

8. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.

1. Wear ear protectors with impact drilling. Exposure to noise can cause hearing loss.

2. Use the auxiliary handle(s), if supplied with the tool. Loss of control can cause personal injury.

3. Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting accessory or fastener may contact hidden wiring. Contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the tool “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.

4. Always be sure you have a firm footing. Be sure no one is below when using the tool in high locations.

5. Hold the tool firmly.

6. Keep hands away from rotating parts.

7. Do not leave the tool running. Operate the tool only when hand-held.

8. Do not touch the bit or the workpiece immediately after operation; they may be extremely hot and could burn your skin.

9. Some materials contain chemicals which may be toxic. Take caution to prevent dust inhalation and skin contact. Follow material supplier safety data.

1. Before using the battery cartridge, read all instructions and cautionary markings on the battery charger, battery, and product using the battery.

2. Do not disassemble the battery cartridge.

3. If operating time has become excessively shorter, stop operating immediately. It may result in a risk of overheating, possible burns, and even an explosion.

4. If electrolyte gets into your eyes, rinse them out with clear water and seek medical attention right away. It may result in loss of your eyesight.

5. Do not short the battery cartridge: do not touch the terminals with any conductive material, avoid storing it with other metal objects, and do not expose it to water or rain. A battery short can cause a large current flow, overheating, burns, and breakdown.

6. Do not store the tool and battery cartridge in locations where the temperature may reach or exceed 50° C (122° F).

7. Do not incinerate the battery cartridge, even if it is severely damaged or completely worn out. It can explode in a fire.

8. Be careful not to drop or strike the battery.

9. Do not use a damaged battery.

10. The contained lithium-ion batteries are subject to Dangerous Goods Legislation requirements. For commercial transport, follow special requirements on packaging and labeling.

11. Follow your local regulations relating to the disposal of the battery.

1. Charge the battery cartridge before it is completely discharged. Always stop tool operation and charge it when you notice less tool power.

2. Never recharge a fully charged battery cartridge. Overcharging shortens the battery service life.

3. Charge the battery cartridge with room temperature at 10°C – 40°C (50°F – 104°F). Let a hot battery cartridge cool down before charging it.

4. Charge the battery cartridge if you do not use it for a long period (more than six months).

First, always ensure the tool is switched off before installing or removing the battery cartridge. Hold the tool and battery firmly to prevent them from slipping.

To remove the battery cartridge: Slide it from the tool while sliding the button on the front of the cartridge.

To install the battery cartridge: Align the tongue on the battery cartridge with the groove in the housing and slip it into place. Insert it all the way until it locks in place with a little click. If you can see the red indicator on the upper side of the button, it is not locked completely.

CAUTION: Always install the battery cartridge fully until the red indicator cannot be seen. If not, it may accidentally fall out of the tool. Do not install the battery cartridge forcibly. If it does not slide in easily, it is not being inserted correctly.

Lithium-ion batteries with a star marking are equipped with a protection system. This system automatically cuts off power to the tool to extend battery life. The tool will automatically stop during operation if the tool and/or battery are placed under one of the following conditions:

Overloaded: The tool is operated in a manner that causes it to draw an abnormally high current. In this situation, release the trigger switch and stop the application that caused the overload. Then pull the trigger switch again to restart.

Overheated: If the tool does not start, the battery is overheated. Let the battery cool before pulling the trigger switch again.

Low battery voltage: The remaining battery capacity is too low and the tool will not operate. In this situation, remove and recharge the battery.

This feature is only for battery cartridges with a “B” at the end of the model number. Press the check button on the battery cartridge to indicate the remaining battery capacity. The indicator lamps light up for a few seconds.

Switch Action: Before inserting the battery, always check that the switch trigger actuates properly and returns to the “OFF” position when released. To start the tool, simply pull the switch trigger. Tool speed is increased by increasing pressure on the trigger. Release the switch trigger to stop.

Electric Brake: This tool is equipped with an electric brake. If the tool consistently fails to stop quickly after the switch trigger is released, have the tool serviced at a Makita service center.

Pull the switch trigger to light up the lamp. The lamp stays lit while the trigger is being pulled. It goes out 10-15 seconds after releasing the trigger. Be careful not to look directly into the light. To clean the lens, use a dry cloth and be careful not to scratch it, as this may lower illumination.

Reversing Switch Action:

This tool has a reversing switch to change the direction of rotation. Depress the reversing switch lever from the “A” side for clockwise rotation or from the “B” side for counterclockwise rotation. When the lever is in the neutral position, the switch trigger cannot be pulled.

CAUTION: Always check the direction of rotation before operation. Use the reversing switch only after the tool comes to a complete stop. When not operating the tool, always set the reversing switch lever to the neutral position.

Speed Change:

This tool has a three-gear speed change lever. To change the speed, first switch off the tool. Then, slide the lever to the “1” position for low speed, “2” for medium speed, or “3” for high speed. Ensure the lever is set correctly before operation.

NOTE: If it’s difficult to slide the lever from “1” to “3” or “3” to “1”, switch on and run the tool for a second at the “2” position, then stop the tool and slide to your desired position.

CAUTION: Always set the speed change lever fully to the correct position. Operating the tool with the lever halfway between positions may damage the tool.

Selecting the action mode:

Use the action mode change lever to select one of three modes:

1. Rotation only: Slide the lever so that it points toward the drill bit symbol on the tool body.

2. Rotation with hammering: Slide the lever so that it points toward the hammer symbol on the tool body.

3. Rotation with clutch: Slide the lever so that it points toward the screw symbol on the tool body.

CAUTION: Always set the lever correctly to your desired mode. Operating the tool with the lever positioned halfway between mode marks may damage the tool.

Adjusting the fastening torque:

The fastening torque can be adjusted in 16 steps by turning the adjusting ring so that its graduations are aligned with the arrow on the tool body. The torque is minimum when number 1 is aligned with the arrow, and maximum when number 16 is aligned. Before actual operation, drive a trial screw into your material to determine the required torque level.

CAUTION: Always ensure the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before working on the tool.

Installing side grip (auxiliary handle): Always use the side grip for operating safety. Insert the side grip so the protrusions on the grip base fit between the grooves on the tool barrel. Tighten the grip by turning it clockwise.

Installing or removing driver bit or drill bit: Turn the sleeve counterclockwise to open the chuck jaws. Place the bit in the chuck as far as it will go. Turn the sleeve clockwise to tighten the chuck. To remove the bit, turn the sleeve counterclockwise.

Installing bit holder: Fit the bit holder into the protrusion at the tool foot on either the right or left side and secure it with a screw. When not using the driver bit, keep it in the bit holders. Bits 45 mm (1-3/4″) long can be kept there.

Adjustable depth rod: Loosen the clamp screw, set the rod to the desired position for uniform depth holes, then tighten the clamp screw.

Hook: The hook is for temporarily hanging the tool. To install it, insert it into a groove in the tool housing on either side and secure it with a screw. To remove, loosen the screw and take it out.

Hammer drilling operation:

CAUTION: A tremendous twisting force is exerted on the tool/bit at hole break-through. Always use the side grip and firmly hold the tool by both the side grip and switch handle.

1. Slide the action mode change lever to the hammer symbol. The adjusting ring can be aligned in any torque level for this operation.

2. Use a tungsten-carbide tipped bit.

3. Position the bit at the desired location and pull the switch trigger. Do not force the tool; light pressure gives the best results.

4. If the hole becomes clogged, do not apply more pressure. Instead, run the tool at an idle, then remove the bit partially from the hole. Repeat this to clean out the hole.

Screwdriving operation:

1. Slide the action mode change lever to the screw symbol. Adjust the torque ring to the proper level for your work.

2. Place the driver bit in the screw head and apply pressure. Start the tool slowly and gradually increase speed. Release the trigger as soon as the clutch cuts in.

NOTE: Ensure the driver bit is inserted straight in the screw head. When driving wood screws, predrill pilot holes to make driving easier and prevent splitting. Refer to the pilot hole chart.

First, slide the action mode change lever to the drill bit symbol. The adjusting ring can be aligned in any torque level for this operation.

Drilling in wood: For best results, use wood drills equipped with a guide screw. The guide screw makes drilling easier by pulling the bit into the workpiece.

Drilling in metal: To prevent the bit from slipping when starting a hole, make an indentation with a center-punch and hammer at the point to be drilled. Place the point of the bit in the indentation and start drilling. Use a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are iron and brass, which should be drilled dry.

CAUTION: Pressing excessively on the tool will not speed up drilling and may damage the bit tip, decrease performance, and shorten the tool’s service life. Hold the tool firmly, especially at hole break-through. A stuck bit can be removed by setting the reversing switch to reverse rotation.

CAUTION: Always ensure the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before attempting to perform inspection or maintenance. Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, or similar substances.

Replacing carbon brushes:

1. Replace the carbon brushes when they wear down to the limit mark. Keep the brushes clean and free to slip in the holders. Both brushes should be replaced at the same time using only identical carbon brushes.

2. Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws, then remove the rear cover.

3. Raise the arm part of the spring and place it in the recessed part of the housing with a slotted bit screwdriver of a slender shaft or similar tool.

4. Use pliers to remove the carbon brush caps. Take out the worn carbon brushes, insert the new ones, and replace the caps in reverse.

5. Make sure the carbon brush caps fit securely into the holes in the brush holders.

6. Reinstall the rear cover and tighten the two screws securely.

7. After replacing brushes, insert the battery cartridge and break in the brushes by running the tool with no load for about 1 minute. Then check the tool while running and check the electric brake operation when releasing the switch trigger. If the brake is not working well, seek repair from a local Makita service center.

The use of any other accessories or attachments might present a risk of injury. Only use an accessory or attachment for its stated purpose.

Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other construction activities contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:

• lead from lead-based paints,

• crystalline silica from bricks and cement and other masonry products, and

• arsenic and chromium from chemically-treated lumber.

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles.
