What are the general operational instructions for the JOHN DEERE WINDROWER?

The grain is ready for windrowing at the same time it is ordinarily ready to cut with binder. Operator should take pride in making the best possible windrow in all conditions. Drive straight and cut a full clean swath being careful so that the inside divider does not run into the standing grain. The proper height to head grain and make proper bed is to leave 10 inches to 14 inches or 1/3 the stubble. The stand must be high enough to provide stubble on which to lay the windrow. Grain will not cure properly or cannot be picked up clean if it is laid on the ground. The grain must not be cut so short that it will become lost in the long stubble making it difficult or impossible to pick up. Care must be taken to cut a swath that is in keeping with the capacity of your Combine. If the crop is so heavy that a 16-foot swath will overload the Combine, a narrower swath must be cut. Bear in mind the success in picking up depends very largely on the quality of the windrow. When picking up do not overload the Combine. Overloading always means wasted grain and high fuel and repair bills. Be sure grain is cured and ready to pick up. Don’t guess, test the moisture content. Set the reel, inside grain deflector and tilt platform to meet varying crop conditions. The cutting range is governed by control lever operated from tractor seat.

How do I adjust the JOHN DEERE WINDROWER for specific crop conditions?

When turning corners raise windrow layer and throw out platform canvas drive by pulling control rope secured to tractor seat. Care should be taken to make the best possible windrow. If grain is heavy, a wide windrow should be laid. If grain is light, a narrow windrow is better. It is better to have a loose and wide windrow which permits free air circulation causing grain to dry faster, rather than a narrow compact one. The width of the windrow is governed by the inside deflector rod through reel support post, at 17. To make a narrow windrow, move deflector toward platform. To make a wide windrow, move deflector away from platform.

How do I level the platform of the JOHN DEERE WINDROWER?

With JOHN DEERE WINDROWER on level ground and platform in high position, adjust turnbuckle at C so that inner end of cutter bar is 26 inches from the ground. Adjustment for purpose of leveling platform is secured by adjusting turnbuckles on platform supporting rods at front end of weight beams so that entire length of cutter bar is 26 inches from the ground. Secure turnbuckles with lock nuts. For Extreme Low Cutting, lower platform to low position and lengthen platform lifting rod by adjusting turnbuckle at C. This permits lowering cutter bar to 4 inches from the ground.

What are the adjustment procedures for the reel on the JOHN DEERE WINDROWER?

The Reel performs an important part in cutting and forming the windrow. It should be set to run close to the top of the grain and leave the grain just after it is cut. In lodged grain, reel should be set low and forward. Grain must not be thrown too far back onto platform. For reel adjustment, a series of holes is provided in the inner and outer supports and posts. To raise or lower reel, raise or lower inner reel support, at A, on post at B. Change location of outer reel support to level end of reel with inner by changing adjustments of brace for outer support at K. To move reel back or forward, change location of inner end of reel at C, and outer end at L. Be sure both ends are in line parallel to cutter bar. Reel Spiders accommodate 6 or 8 slats. Opposite sides of spiders equip reel with 6 slats. Holes in arms permit use of two slats on each arm when necessary. In tall grain 6 sets of slats do better work. In light short grain arrange reel for 8 slats. Only in unusual conditions of nodding or leaning grain are two sets of slats necessary.

How do I adjust the slip clutches on the JOHN DEERE WINDROWER?

Slip Clutches are a safety to reduce breakage. When JOHN DEERE WINDROWER is in operation, should any of these clutches slip, stop immediately and locate the cause. The springs controlling the clutches should have just enough tension to hold the clutch to its normal work. When setting up, slip the clutches a few times to loosen the paint. Important: SLIP CLUTCHES should be set tight enough for ordinary work without slipping, but loose enough to slip easily if there is any clogging. Set them loose at first and tighten gradually until proper working tension is determined. If slip clutches do not slip easily, take them apart and clean. This should be done once each season. To adjust slip clutch, remove cotter in nut and screw in or out to tighten or loosen. Replace cotter.

How do I maintain the bearings on the JOHN DEERE WINDROWER?

Tapered Roller Bearings in Main Wheel should be adjusted when there is noticeable end play in wheel bearings. To test, jack up main frame. If adjustment is necessary remove lock strap and turn adjusting nut in until wheel binds slightly when turning, then loosen nut slowly until wheel runs free and easy. Secure adjustment with lock. Tapered Roller Bearings in Grain Wheel are adjustable with a take-up nut. Roller Bearings in Front Truck Wheels are adjustable to take up wear or looseness with adjusting collar. Adjust collar so wheel will not have end play on axle. Keep wheels thoroughly greased. Lubricate them once each day.

What are the general lubrication guidelines for the JOHN DEERE WINDROWER?

Conscientious lubrication and oiling insures an easier running machine, longer life, fewer delays and smaller repair bills. When lubricating machine, be sure that all Zerks in bearing boxes are wiped clean. Use a good grade of grease. Also be sure that dirt and dust do not get into the container. If any of the bearings on a new machine have a tendency to heat, grease the bearings liberally. Keep platform bevel gear housing and platform canvas drive chain case well filled with a good grade of grease. Brush chains freely with a light oil. Lubricate machine thoroughly twice each day (morning and noon). Do not overlook any of the Zerk fittings. In the middle of the forenoon and the middle of the afternoon, lubricate these bearings: Bronze bearing at front end of sickle pitman shaft and Sickle pitman. Main wheel is equipped with a large grease cup which facilitates lubrication of main axle and hub bearings. While lubricating machine watch for loose bolts, improperly adjusted chains and anything else that might result in trouble.
