As the owner and/or user of the HOTSY DB-3540, you have the following responsibilities:

• You must have an understanding of the manufacturer’s operating instructions and warnings before use.

• Warning information should be emphasized and understood. If you are not fluent in English, the instructions and warnings must be read to and discussed with you in your native language by the purchaser/owner to ensure comprehension.

• You must study and maintain the manufacturer’s instructions for future reference.

• You must know how to stop the machine quickly and understand the operation of all controls.

• Never permit anyone to operate the engine without proper instructions.

• This manual should be considered a permanent part of the machine and should remain with it if the machine is resold.

To ensure safe operation of your HOTSY DB-3540, please adhere to the following precautions:

• Read the owner’s manual thoroughly. Failure to follow instructions could cause malfunction, death, serious bodily injury, and/or property damage.

• Know how to stop the machine and bleed pressure quickly. Be thoroughly familiar with the controls.

• Stay alert and watch what you are doing.

• Use this product only in a well-ventilated area to avoid the risk of asphyxiation from carbon monoxide.

• Do not add fuel while the product is operating to avoid risk of fire.

• Do not spray flammable liquids to avoid risk of explosion.

• Do not place the machine near flammable objects as the engine is hot.

• Keep the wand, hose, and water spray away from electric wiring to prevent fatal electric shock.

• Keep the operating area clear of all persons.

• This machine exceeds 85 db; appropriate ear protection must be worn.

• Wear protective eye, hand, and foot safety devices to protect against airborne particles like paint chips.

• Grip the cleaning wand securely with both hands before starting to prevent injury from a whipping wand.

• Keep clear of the nozzle. The high pressure developed by this machine can cause personal injury or equipment damage. Do not direct the discharge stream at people.

• Be extremely careful when using a ladder, scaffolding, or any other relatively unstable location.

• Keep good footing and balance at all times. Do not overreach or stand on unstable support.

• Do not operate this machine when fatigued or under the influence of alcohol, prescription medications, or drugs.

To safely refuel your HOTSY DB-3540, follow these steps:

1. Allow the engine to cool for 1-2 minutes before refueling.

2. If any fuel is spilled, make sure the area is dry before testing the spark plug or starting the engine.

3. Gasoline engines on mobile or portable equipment shall be refueled:

a. outdoors;

b. with the engine on the equipment stopped;

c. with no source of ignition within 10 feet of the dispensing point; and

d. with an allowance made for expansion of the fuel should the equipment be exposed to a higher ambient temperature.

The main components of the HOTSY DB-3540 are:

• Pump: Develops high pressure.

• Starter Grip: Used for starting the engine manually.

• Spray Gun: Controls the application of water and detergent onto the cleaning surface with a trigger device. Includes a safety latch.

• Detergent Injector: Allows you to siphon and mix detergents.

• Wand: Must be connected to the spray gun.

• High Pressure Hose: Connects one end to the water pump discharge nipple and the other end to the spray gun.

• Pump Protector: Cycles fresh cool water through the pump when recirculating water reaches 140°F. If the trigger is released for more than 1-2 minutes, warm water will discharge from the pump protector onto the floor to prevent internal pump damage.

Other components include the Pressure Nozzle, Inlet Screen, Unloader, and Trigger.

Follow these steps to assemble your HOTSY DB-3540:

STEP 1: Attach the handle to the frame of the pressure washer. It may be necessary to move the handle supports from side to side to align the handle so it will slide over the frame supports.

STEP 2: Insert the carriage bolt through the holes from the outside of the unit and attach a nut from the inside. Tighten the nuts.

STEP 3: Attach the spray gun/hose storage handle and bracket to the handle. Tighten the nuts.

STEP 4: Attach the high-pressure hose to the spray gun using Teflon tape on the hose threads.

STEP 5: Attach the nozzle extension to the spray gun/wand. Tighten both by hand.

STEP 6: Pull the spring-loaded collar of the wand coupler back to insert your choice of pressure nozzle.

STEP 7: Release the coupler collar and push the nozzle until the collar clicks. Pull the nozzle to make sure it is seated properly.

STEP 8: Connect the high-pressure hose to the pump discharge nipple. Push the coupler collar forward until secure.

STEP 9: Connect a garden hose (7.5m) to the cold water source.

STEP 10: Check the inlet filters, remove any debris, and then connect the garden hose to the pump water inlet. CAUTION: Do not run the pump without water, as pump damage will result.

To start your HOTSY DB-3540, follow this procedure:

STEP 1: Check the engine oil level. It should be level with the bottom of the oil filler neck. Ensure the machine is level. The oil should be changed after the first 5 hours of use, then every 50 hours.

STEP 2: Check the pump oil level. Use 30 wt. (non-detergent) oil.

STEP 3: Fill the gas tank with unleaded gasoline. Do not use leaded gasoline.

STEP 4: Squeeze the trigger on the spray gun to eliminate trapped air, then wait for a steady flow of water to emerge from the spray nozzle.

STEP 5: Rotate the fuel shut-off valve to the “On” position. Slide the fuel valve lever to the “ON” position.

STEP 6: Move the choke lever to the “Choke” position. For a warm engine, leave the choke lever in the “Run” position. To restart a warm engine, leave the choke lever in the “Open” position.

STEP 8: Turn the engine switch to the “On” position. On Briggs engines, move the throttle lever to the “Fast” position (shown as a rabbit).

STEP 9: Pull the starter grip. If the engine fails to start after 2 pulls, squeeze the trigger gun to release pressure and repeat. Return the starter gently. After the engine warms up enough to run smoothly, move the choke to the run position and the throttle to the fast position. CAUTION: Small engines may kick back. Do not hold the pull starter grip tightly in hand.

The HOTSY DB-3540 uses four color-coded quick-connect nozzles to provide a wide array of spray widths. Always engage the safety latch on the spray gun trigger before replacing nozzles.

Here is a guide to the nozzles:

• White 40° or Green 25° Nozzle: Use for a more gentle rinse.

• Yellow 15° Nozzle: Use to scour a surface.

• Red 0° Nozzle: Provides a direct, high-impact stream.

• Black (Soap) Nozzle: Use to apply detergent.

Follow these steps to apply detergent with your HOTSY DB-3540:

STEP 1: Connect the detergent injector to the discharge nipple on the machine. Connect the high-pressure hose to the injector with the quick coupler.

STEP 2: Use a detergent specifically designed for pressure washers. Prepare the solution as required by the manufacturer and place the filter end of the detergent suction tube into the detergent container.

STEP 3: With the safety latch on the spray gun engaged, secure the black detergent nozzle into the quick coupler. Note that detergent cannot be applied using the yellow, green, or white nozzles.

STEP 4: With the engine running, pull the trigger to operate the machine. Liquid detergent is drawn into the machine and mixed with water. Apply detergent to the work area, but do not allow it to dry on the surface.

IMPORTANT: You must flush the detergent injection system after each use. Place the suction tube into a bucket of clean water, then run the pressure washer in low pressure for 1-2 minutes.

Cleaning Tips:

• Pre-rinse the cleaning surface with fresh water.

• Place the detergent suction tube into your cleaning solution and apply it to the surface at low pressure.

• For best results, limit your work area to sections approximately 6 feet square and always apply detergent from the bottom to the top.

• Allow detergent to remain on the surface for 1-3 minutes. Do not let it dry. If the surface appears to be drying, wet it down with fresh water.

• Use a brush to remove stubborn dirt if needed.

• Rinse at high pressure from top to bottom in an even sweeping motion, keeping the spray nozzle approximately 1 foot from the cleaning surface. Use overlapping strokes.

• For the best surface cleaning action, spray at a slight angle.

Rinsing:

It will take a few seconds for the detergent to clear. Apply the safety latch to the spray gun. Remove the black soap nozzle from the quick coupler. Select and install the desired high-pressure nozzle. You can also stop detergent flow by simply removing the detergent siphon tube from the bottle.

CAUTION – Never use:

• Bleach, chlorine products, and other corrosive chemicals

• Liquids containing solvents (e.g., paint thinner, gasoline, oils)

• Tri-sodium phosphate products

• Ammonia products

• Acid-based products

These chemicals will harm the machine and damage the surface being cleaned.

Follow these steps to shut down your HOTSY DB-3540:

STEP 1: Remove the detergent suction tube from its container and insert it into one gallon of fresh water. Use the low-pressure setting or the black detergent nozzle. Pull the trigger on the spray gun and siphon water for one minute to flush the system.

STEP 2: Turn off the engine.

STEP 3: Turn off the water supply.

STEP 4: Press the trigger to release any remaining water pressure.

STEP 5: Disconnect the garden hose from the water inlet on the machine.

STEP 6: Disconnect the high-pressure hose from the pump discharge nipple.

STEP 7: Engage the spray gun safety lock.

CAUTION: Always store your pressure washer in a location where the temperature will not fall below 32°F (0°C). The pump in this machine is susceptible to permanent damage if frozen. FREEZE DAMAGE IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY.

Follow these storage steps:

1. Stop the pressure washer and squeeze the spray gun trigger to release pressure.

2. Detach the water supply hose and high-pressure hose.

3. Turn on the machine for a few seconds until the remaining water exits. Turn the engine off immediately.

4. Drain the gas from the engine.

5. Do not allow the high-pressure hose to become kinked.

6. Store the machine and accessories in a room that does not reach freezing temperatures.

For storage longer than one month:

1. Replenish engine oil to the upper level.

2. Drain gasoline from the fuel tank, fuel line, fuel valve, and carburetor.

3. Pour about one teaspoon of engine oil through the spark plug hole, pull the starter grip several times, and replace the plug. Then pull the starter grip slowly until you feel increased pressure, which indicates the piston is on its compression stroke. Leave it in this position to close both valves and prevent rusting.

4. Cover the pressure washer and store it in a clean, dry, well-ventilated place away from open flames or sparks.

After Extended Storage: Prior to restarting, thaw out any possible ice from the pressure washer hoses, spray gun, or wand.

If you are experiencing low operating pressure with your HOTSY DB-3540, check the following:

• Insufficient water supply, closed faucet, or kinked inlet hose: Use a larger garden hose, clean the inlet water screen, and open the faucet fully.

• Clogged inlet hose strainer: Check the plumbing system for leaks. Re-tape any leaks with Teflon tape.

• Faulty or improperly adjusted unloader valve: Adjust the unloader for proper pressure. Install a repair kit if needed. Contact your local dealer.

• Worn packing in pump: Contact your local dealer.

• Machine stored in freezing temperatures: Thaw out the machine completely, including the hose, spray gun, and wand.

Fluctuating pressure on your HOTSY DB-3540 can be caused by several issues:

• Slow engine RPM: Contact your local dealer.

• Worn or dirty pump valves: Contact your local dealer.

• Nozzle is obstructed: Blow out or remove debris with a fine needle.

• Pump sucking air, inlet hose leaking: Check all pump lines and connections.

If the engine on your HOTSY DB-3540 won’t start or stops during operation, consider these possible causes and solutions:

• Low oil shutdown: Fill the engine with oil.

• Out of gas: Fill the fuel tank.

• Water in gasoline: Drain the gas tank and fill with clean fuel.

If your HOTSY DB-3540 engine stops after about 15 minutes of operation, check the following:

• Not enough gas or engine oil: Fill the tank with gas and check the oil level.

• Vapor lock developed by heat of day: Keep the gas tank full to avoid vapor locking.

• Obstruction in fuel filter: Clean or replace the fuel filter.

If your HOTSY DB-3540 is not siphoning detergent, try these troubleshooting steps:

• Detergent suction tube not properly connected: Check the connection.

• Detergent is too thick: Dilute the detergent. For best results, use the manufacturer’s recommended detergent.

• Detergent filter valve is at lowest setting: Set the detergent filter valve to a higher setting.

• Filter on detergent suction tube is clogged: Run warm water through the filter to remove debris.

• Damaged or clogged detergent suction tube: Remove the obstruction or replace the detergent suction tube.

• A high-pressure nozzle is attached: Replace it with the black detergent nozzle.

• Discharge nozzle is obstructed: Blow out or remove debris with a fine needle.

If the pump on your HOTSY DB-3540 is unusually noisy, it is likely sucking air. Check that all hoses and fittings are airtight. Turn off the machine and purge the pump by squeezing the trigger gun until a steady flow of water emerges through the nozzle.
