What should I do before operating my HOTPOINT WM42 washing machine for the first time?

1. Make sure that your HOTPOINT WM42 is correctly installed by following the Installation Instructions supplied with the machine.

2. **REMOVE THE TRANSIT BRACKET.** You must not operate the machine with this bracket in place. Disconnect the machine from the electricity supply and then follow the procedure as shown on the label on the back of the machine. After the transit bracket has been removed, it is normal for the door seal to appear creased; this will not impair the function of the machine.

3. Read the instructions before using your machine.

NOTE: Do not sit or stand on top of your washing machine; you could injure yourself or damage the machine by such abuse.

WARNING: CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO PLAY WITH THE APPLIANCE OR TAMPER WITH THE CONTROLS.

How do I care for and clean my HOTPOINT WM42 washing machine?

After each wash:

Open the door, remove clothes, and rotate the drum to check for small items left behind. Then, remove the dispenser drawer for cleaning.

To clean the dispenser drawer:

1. Pull out the drawer until it reaches its stop, then lift slightly and give it a sharp tug to remove it completely.

2. Remove the fabric conditioner compartment.

3. Pull off the syphon tube and clean the conditioner compartment.

4. Push the syphon tube firmly back into place in the conditioner compartment.

5. Clean the dispenser drawer and dry it thoroughly.

6. Replace the conditioner compartment in the dispenser drawer, with the syphon tube towards the back.

7. Check that the flap at the back is in place and pivots correctly.

To locate the drawer back into the machine, hold the top of the flap away from you until it locates under the top of the dispenser opening, then push the drawer back in firmly.

As necessary:

Clean exterior surfaces with a damp cloth or silicon polish only. Do not use abrasive cleaners, scouring agents, acids, chlorine bleach, or metal polish.

NOTE: The hole in the grey door gasket is designed to let water drain back into the drum.

How long do wash programmes take on the HOTPOINT WM42?

The exact time depends on the temperature of the incoming water and the Dirt Level selected. ‘Profile’ wash programmes are longer than ‘Normal’ ones to obtain the best washing performance at lower temperatures, saving electricity. For a shorter wash, you can select the ‘Light’ wash or ‘Quick Wash’ for lightly soiled loads.

The following are approximate programme times in minutes:

Wash option
Programme Normal Profile Light
Quick Wash approx. 35
Mixed Wash 240
95 Cotton 110 140 75
60 Cotton 90 100 50
50 Synthetics 85 90 45
40 Synthetics/Wool 60 75 40
40 Non-colourfast 55 60 50

A Pre-Wash adds approximately 30 minutes. An additional RINSE adds 5-10 minutes.

How much laundry can I put in the HOTPOINT WM42?

Do not overload your machine, as clothes won’t wash properly and damage may be caused. Refer to the programme guide for maximum loads for each fabric type. To help you wash the correct quantity, the chart below lists typical clothes weights.

Typical Weights

Item Material Weight
Blouse Cotton 150g / 5oz
Other 100g / 3.5oz
Dress Cotton 500g / 1lb 2oz
Other 350g / 12oz
Jeans 700g / 1lb 8oz
10 Nappies 1000g / 2lb 3oz
Shirt Cotton 300g / 10.5oz
Other 200g / 7oz
T-Shirt 125g / 4.5oz
Household items
Duvet Cover (Double) Cotton 1500g / 3lb 5oz
Other 1000g / 2lb 3oz
Large Tablecloth 700g / 1lb 8oz
Small Tablecloth 250g / 9oz
Tea Towel 100g / 3.5oz
Bath Towel 700g / 1lb 8oz
Hand Towel 350g / 12oz
Double Sheet 500g / 1lb 2oz
Single Sheet 350g / 12oz

Additional tips:

  • Wash blankets, double bedspreads, and other bulky articles one at a time. To load a blanket, hold it by the centre, allow the corners to drop down, and feed it into the machine centre first.
  • Limit highly absorbent loads like towels and nappies to 3kg (7lb) per load to ensure adequate rinsing.
  • Place small items in a washbag.
  • Whenever possible, wash a full load of clothes to obtain maximum cost and time efficiency.

What type and how much washing detergent should I use in my HOTPOINT WM42?

Which one to use?

Use any low suds automatic powder. Non-automatic powders reduce wash performance and can cause overfoaming. Your machine is specially developed to take advantage of biological powders.

How much to use?

It is important to use the correct quantity. Too little won’t get clothes clean, and too much is a waste. In soft water, you will need less detergent. The table below provides a guide.

Detergent Cottons (Hard water / Soft water*) Synthetics (Hard water / Soft water*) Woollens (Hard water / Soft water*)
Prewash 75/50 grams 75/50 grams
Full load 180/140 grams 110/80 grams 110/90 grams
Reduced load 120/80 grams 90/70 grams 90/70 grams

These doses are for normally soiled loads. 1 cup = 265ml = approximately 160g.

*If you are unsure, check with your local water company.

Where to put it:

Pull out the drawer on the left of the machine. It has compartments for Prewash detergent, Main wash detergent, and Fabric conditioner. For liquid detergents that do not have their own dispenser, a special dispenser is recommended, which can be placed in the right-hand section of the drawer.

How do I use the special wash features on the HOTPOINT WM42?

Prewash: After switching the machine on, press the Dirt Level (Wash) button once only to select Prewash, then press start. An 800rpm spin is automatically selected.

Quick Wash: Use this for lightly soiled ‘daily’ items. The load size should be limited to a maximum of 0.9kg (2lb). This programme gives a 40°C wash, 3 rinses, and a delicate spin in a little over 35 minutes.

Mixed Wash: Use for a mixed load of both natural and delicate fabrics. Silks, woollens, and any non-colourfast items should be washed separately. Load size should be no more than 3kg (6.6lb). This programme is economical due to its low 40°C temperature and long 4-hour soak.

Rinses: Normal rinses are provided automatically. Press the ‘Rinses’ button once to delete a rinse, or twice to add an extra rinse. Rinses will not operate on Quick Wash and Programme 7.

Rinse Hold: This stops the machine during the final rinse, holding the washing in water until you are ready to spin dry, which minimises creasing. The Rinse Hold light will flash and the machine will tumble every minute. Press the Rinse Hold button again to continue. This feature cannot be used on spin only and wool programmes.

Delay Hours: This delays the time when you want the wash programme to finish, for up to 18 hours. Press the Delay Hours button to set the required time. The display will show the time left until the end of the programme.

Lockable Dispenser Drawer: This prevents the drawer from being pulled out accidentally. To use, insert a coin into the vertical slot next to the drawer and turn 90° anti-clockwise. To release, turn 90° clockwise.

How do I select a programme and wash option on the HOTPOINT WM42?

1. Switching On: Press the On/Off Security button. ‘Normal’ and No Spin will appear in the display.

2. Selecting a Programme: Press and hold the Wash and Spin Programme Selector button. The display will cycle through ‘QUICK WASH’, ‘MIXED WASH’, Programmes ‘1-9’, ‘RINSE AND DELICATE SPIN’ 800, ‘3 RINSES AND SUPER SPIN’ 1400, ‘SUPER SPIN’ 1400, ‘FAST SPIN’ 1000, and ‘DELICATE SPIN’ 800. Release the button when your desired programme is displayed.

3. Selecting the Wash Option: After choosing your programme, press the Wash button. The display will sequence through ‘NORMAL’, ‘PROFILE’, ‘LIGHT’, ‘NORMAL PREWASH’, and ‘PROFILE PREWASH’. Release the button when the appropriate option is displayed. If you do not select an option, the machine will automatically select ‘Normal’ (or ‘Light’ for Quick Wash).

Wash Option Guide:

Wash option Type of Soiling
Normal For everyday items which are normally soiled.
Profile For items which are heavily soiled e.g. overalls; items stained with blood/oil/grease/gravy/coffee/tea/chocolate etc. This option is enhanced when used with Biological Persil.
Light For lightly soiled items only.
Normal Prewash Use with Normal wash programmes at Normal wash temperatures.
Profile Prewash Use with Profile wash programmes using lower wash temperatures.

What should I do if my HOTPOINT WM42 won’t start?

Check the following things:

  • Have you selected the programme and pulled out the selector knob?
  • Is the loading door closed firmly?
  • Is it plugged in and switched on at the mains?
  • Is the socket OK? (Try another appliance in it.)
  • Has the fuse blown? (Try a new fuse of the correct rating.)
  • Does the Programme Display show the right programme?

Why won’t the door on my HOTPOINT WM42 open?

  • Has the door lock been set?
  • Is the door locked?
  • Has the programme finished?
  • Could it be on Rinse Hold?
  • Is there water still in the machine? Check your drain outlet. If your waste installation is wrong, water could be running back into the machine causing the door to lock. Spin out and try again.

Why are the clothes not dry enough after a cycle in my HOTPOINT WM42?

  • Has the machine finished the programme? This can take some time. The programme is finished when ‘0 END’ appears in the display.
  • Did you select the right programme for the type of fabric?
  • Did the water pump out? (Check waste plumbing arrangements.)
  • Did you select Delicate Spin? This is a slow speed for delicate fabrics, which does not spin them quite so dry.

Why is my HOTPOINT WM42 taking a long time to complete a wash?

Have you selected a hot wash? Hot programmes can take a long time, especially if the water has to be heated up from cold. Other things that can lengthen the programme are:

  • Prewash
  • Low water pressure
  • Modifying your machine to cold fill only

Why are my clothes coming out dirty from the HOTPOINT WM42?

  • Did you select the correct programme? (Try a prewash next time).
  • Did you use the correct quantity of detergent?
  • Did you select the correct wash options?
  • Was the machine overloaded? Good wash results are only obtainable with the recommended wash load.
  • Were the clothes very dirty? Try using ‘Normal’, ‘Pre-Wash’ and ‘Profile’ Wash options for maximum cleaning.
  • Did you use Quick Wash for a full load? This is an optional wash feature for small loads only.

What does it mean if an ‘E’ has appeared in the Programme Display on my HOTPOINT WM42?

This indicates an error. Press the ‘On/Off’ button to switch the machine off. After a few seconds, switch it on and try to reset your programme. If the ‘E’ persists, switch the machine off, unplug it and check the following:

  • Is the drain hose kinked?
  • Has the drain hose been installed correctly? Do NOT push the drain hose more than 50mm (2in) down the stand pipe. See Installation Instructions.

Why has my HOTPOINT WM42 stopped in the middle of a programme?

  • Have the clothes been mislabelled with the wrong fabric type?
  • After the initial fill, the machine may pause while the heater operates. It should continue after the selected temperature is reached. Wait a few minutes.
  • Is the ‘Rinse Hold’ light in the display flashing? If so, press the Rinse Hold button and the machine will continue.
  • Is the drain hose kinked? If so, unkink it as water will be unable to drain away.

Why is my HOTPOINT WM42 making a noise or vibrating during the spin cycle?

Your machine will make some noises, especially while spinning. If vibration is excessive, check the following:

  • Have you removed the transit packing? See Installation Instructions.
  • Small loads of heavy or bulky items (towels, bath mats, jeans, etc.) can cause out-of-balance conditions, but the machine will usually sort itself out.
  • Check that your machine is resting firmly on the floor. See Installation Instructions regarding levelling.

Note: Rattling and scraping noises are not normal and may need attention.

What should I do if my HOTPOINT WM42 won’t pump out the water?

  • Has the drain hose been installed correctly? (See the Installation Instructions.)
  • Is the hose kinked?
  • If you have connected to a sink waste spigot, is the spigot blocked?

Why is my HOTPOINT WM42 leaking?

  • Are the fill hoses tightened correctly? Perhaps the washers are not sealed properly.
  • Is your standpipe blocked?
  • Is your household drainage system blocked? If you cannot clear the blockage yourself, you will need a plumber.
  • Removal of the hooked end support on the drain hose may cause a leakage.

Why won’t my HOTPOINT WM42 fill with water or take in detergent?

  • Are the taps turned on fully?
  • Are the fill hoses kinked behind the machine?
  • Have you got the hoses connected correctly?
  • Have you selected the programme correctly and pulled out the selector knob to start the machine?
  • If you are using a liquid detergent dispenser, did you put powder in it by mistake?
