Mounting, initial configuration, and removal must be conducted by a qualified specialist under compliance with local safety regulations.

The documentation for the HEIDENHAIN ERN 1123 should be read in the following order of priority:

NOTICE

Notice indicates danger to material or data. If you do not follow the avoidance instructions, the hazard could result in property damage.

Always observe the following general safety precautions:

• Electric Shock: Connect the product only to downstream electronics whose supply voltage comes from PELV systems.

• Live Plug Connections: Do not engage or disengage any connecting elements while the product is under power.

• Damaged Components: Do not use any damaged or worn components. In case of replacement, use new screws, spring pins, and nuts.

• Improper Assembly: Further assembly requirements must be defined by the machine manufacturer. Note the machine manufacturer’s assembly requirements and perform an acceptance test after assembly.

• Moving Machine Parts: Observe all of the machine manufacturer’s notes on working on the machine, e.g., always disconnect the machine from the power supply.

• Hot Surfaces: Never touch the encoder unless it has cooled down completely, as serious burns and skin injuries can be caused by its surface.

To avoid property damage, follow these instructions:

• Mechanical Stress: Do not drop the product or subject it to major vibration. Do not expose the product to mechanical stress. Do not change the physical structure of the product.

• Electrical Stress: Do not engage or disengage any connecting elements while the product is under power. Do not touch the contacts of the plug connections.

• Electrostatic Discharge (ESD): It is essential to observe the safety precautions for handling ESD-sensitive components. Never touch connecting contacts without ensuring proper grounding. Wear a grounded ESD wristband when handling product connections.

• Inappropriate Tools: Do not use hammers or pointed or sharp-edged tools for mounting or removal.

• Unsuitable Cleaning Agents: Do not clean the encoder with organic solvents such as thinners, alcohol, or mineral spirits.

Follow these steps to mount the product variant without a permanently attached cable:

1. Ensure the mounting surface and the encoder surface are clean and free of grease.

2. Make sure the setscrews do not protrude into the hole.

3. Tighten the setscrews (2x M3).

4. Place the encoder on the machine shaft.

5. Tighten the four screws (4x M3) and the four washers with the specified torque of Md = 1 Nm ± 0.1 Nm to fasten the stator coupling.

6. Tighten the setscrews of the shaft (2x Ø1.5) with the specified torque of Md = 0.6 Nm ± 0.1 Nm.

7. To prevent damage from tensile forces on the cable assembly wires, use the mounting aid. Set the mounting aid on the connector.

8. Insert the connector.

Follow these steps to mount the product variant with a permanently attached cable:

1. Ensure the mounting surface and the encoder surface are clean and free of grease.

2. Make sure the setscrews do not protrude into the hole.

3. Tighten the setscrews (2x M3).

4. Place the encoder on the machine shaft.

5. Tighten the four screws (4x M3) and the four washers with the specified torque of Md = 1 Nm ± 0.1 Nm to fasten the stator coupling.

6. Tighten the setscrews of the shaft (2x Ø1.5) with the specified torque of Md = 0.6 Nm ± 0.1 Nm.

After mounting, you must connect the encoder. Connecting and disconnecting live cables can result in death or serious injury.

• Only connect and disconnect cables and plug connections when no current is flowing through them.

• Disconnect the downstream electronics from power before connecting the product.

• For cables without connectors, pay attention to the pin layout.

Connecting cables may become damaged as a result of incorrect routing.

• Observe the maximum permissible bend radii.

• Do not cross connecting cables in drag chains.

• Route connecting cables professionally.

Finally, connect the encoder to the downstream electronics.

Before and during the removal of the HEIDENHAIN ERN 1123, observe these safety precautions:

• Live plug connections: If you disengage plug connections while the equipment is under power, this may result in fatal accidents or severe personal injury. Do not engage or disengage any connecting elements while the product is under power.

• Moving machine parts: Risk of injury due to moving machine parts depending on the installation location and the application. Observe all of the machine manufacturer’s notes on working on the machine, e.g., always disconnect the machine from the power supply.

• Hot surface: Serious burns and skin injuries can be caused by touching the surface of the encoder. Never touch the encoder unless it has cooled down completely.

To remove the HEIDENHAIN ERN 1123:

► Disconnect the encoder from the downstream electronics.

► Remove the encoder in the reversed sequence of mounting.
