The GARMIN NUVI 1240 includes the following features according to the series model comparison:

The main menu of your GARMIN NUVI 1240 has several icons and information points:

1. GPS satellite strength: Shows the current strength of the GPS signal.

2. Bluetooth technology status: (Note: This is not applicable to the GARMIN NUVI 1240 model).

3. Usage mode: Touch to select a usage mode (e.g., Automobile, Pedestrian).

4. Current time: Touch to change time settings.

5. Battery status: Shows the current battery level.

6. Where To?: Touch to find a destination.

7. View map: Touch to view the map.

8. Phone: Touch to make a call when connected to a compatible mobile phone on some models. (Note: This is not applicable to the GARMIN NUVI 1240 model).

9. Volume: Touch to adjust the volume.

10. Tools: Touch to use the tools such as settings and Help.

Follow these steps to mount your GARMIN NUVI 1240:

1. Remove the clear plastic from the suction cup. Place the suction cup on the windshield.

2. Flip the lever back toward the windshield to secure the suction cup.

3. Snap the cradle onto the suction cup arm.

4. Plug the vehicle power cable into the back of your GARMIN NUVI 1240.

5. Plug the other end of the vehicle power cable into a power outlet in your vehicle. The unit should turn on automatically if it is plugged in and the vehicle is running. Follow the on-screen instructions.

6. Fit the bottom of your GARMIN NUVI 1240 into the cradle.

7. Tilt your GARMIN NUVI 1240 back until it snaps into place.

8. If you are using a traffic receiver in Europe, connect the external antenna to the traffic receiver and secure it to the windshield using the suction cups.

WARNING: This product contains a lithium-ion battery. To prevent damage, remove the unit from the vehicle when exiting or store it out of direct sunlight.

To acquire satellite signals with your GARMIN NUVI 1240:

1. Go outdoors to an open area, away from tall buildings and trees.

2. Turn on your GARMIN NUVI 1240.

Acquiring satellite signals can take a few minutes. The bars on the main menu indicate satellite strength. When at least one of the bars is green, your GARMIN NUVI 1240 has acquired satellite signals.

Your GARMIN NUVI 1240 offers several usage modes (Automobile, Pedestrian, Bicycle) for different navigation methods. To change your usage mode:

1. From the Main menu, touch the usage mode icon on the upper-left corner.

2. Select a mode, and touch OK.

3. Touch Yes, and follow the on-screen instructions to configure your settings.

If you are not following roadways as you navigate, use Off Road mode on your GARMIN NUVI 1240. Touch Tools > Settings > Navigation > Route Preference > Off Road > OK.

Press and quickly release the Power button on your GARMIN NUVI 1240 to view additional options:

• Touch the brightness icons to adjust the screen brightness.

• Touch Lock Screen to prevent accidental screen touches.

• Touch Power Off to turn off your GARMIN NUVI 1240.

You can also turn off the device by holding the power button for approximately three seconds.

If your GARMIN NUVI 1240 stops functioning, reset it by pressing and holding the Power button.

From the Main menu, touch Volume. Touch the plus and minus icons to adjust the volume. Touch the box next to Mute to mute all audio.

• To quickly return to the Main menu, touch and hold the back arrow icon.

• Touch the up and down arrows to see more choices. Touch and hold to scroll faster.

Follow these steps to find a destination:

1. Touch Where To?.

2. Select a category (e.g., Address, Points of Interest, Go Home).

3. Select a subcategory if applicable (e.g., Food, Lodging).

4. Select a destination from the list.

5. Touch Go! to start navigation.

1. While navigating a route, touch the menu button > Where To?.

2. Search for the extra stop.

3. Touch Go!.

4. Touch Add as Via Point to add this stop before your final destination.

1. While navigating a route, touch the menu button > Where To?.

4. Touch Set as New Destination to make this your final destination.

1. While navigating a route, touch the menu icon.

If the route you are currently taking is the only reasonable option, the GARMIN NUVI 1240 might not calculate a detour.

1. With a route active, touch Menu.

2. Touch Stop.

1. Touch Where To? > Address.

2. Change the state, country, or province, if necessary.

3. Touch Search All.

4. Enter the number of the address, and touch Done.

5. Enter the street name, and touch Done.

6. Select the correct street in the list, if necessary.

7. Touch the address, if necessary.

To set your home location for the place you return to most often:

1. Touch Where To? > Go Home.

2. Select an option:

• Enter your address.

• Use your current location.

• Choose from a list of recently found locations.

To navigate home after setting it, touch Where To? > Go Home.

To change your home location:

1. Touch Tools > My Data > Set Home Location.

2. Select an option: Enter your address, Use your current location, or Choose from a list of recently found locations.

To edit your home location details:

1. Touch Where To? > Favorites > All Favorites > Home.

2. Touch Edit, enter your changes, and touch Done.

After you have selected a location to navigate to, the ‘Go!’ page opens with several options:

1. Information Box: Touch to view more information for the location.

2. Zoom: Touch (+) and (-) to zoom in and out.

3. Call: Touch to call this location when connected to a phone (not applicable on all models).

4. Save: Touch to save this location to your Favorites.

5. Go!: Touch to create a turn-by-turn route to this location.

6. Back Arrow: Touch to return to the previous page. Touch and hold to return to the Main menu.

1. Touch Where To? > Near.

2. Select an option:

• Where I Am Now: search near your current location.

• A Different City: search near the city you enter.

• A Recent Destination: search near a recent destination.

• A Favorite Destination: select a destination from Favorites.

• My Current Route: search along your active route.

• My Destination: search near your current destination.

Saving a Place You Find:

1. From the Go! page, touch Save.

2. Touch OK. The place is saved in Favorites.

Saving Your Current Location:

From the Map page, touch the vehicle icon. Touch Save Location to save your current location.

Editing Saved Places (Favorites):

1. Touch Where To? > Favorites.

2. Select the category and the location you want to edit.

3. Touch Edit.

4. Touch an item to edit, such as Change Name, Attach Photo, Change Map Symbol, or Change Phone Number.

On some models, you can use your GARMIN NUVI 1240 to create and save routes before your trip. You can save up to 10 routes.

1. With a route active, touch Where to? (or Tools) > Routes > New.

2. Touch Add New Start Point.

3. Find a location as your starting point, and touch Select.

4. Touch Add New End Point.

5. Find a location as your ending point, and touch Select.

6. Touch the plus icon to add another location to your route. Touch the minus icon to remove a location.

7. Touch Next to calculate your route and view it on the map.

8. Touch Save to save the route and exit.

1. Touch Where To? > Coordinates.

2. Touch the coordinate you want to adjust.

3. Touch Format to select the correct coordinate format for the type of map you are using.

4. Enter the coordinates, and touch Next.

The map page displays various pieces of information:

1. Next Turn Indicator: Touch to view the next turn.

2. Turn List: Touch the text bar at the top of the map to view the full turn list.

3. Zoom Controls: Touch to zoom in and out.

4. Back Button: Touch to return to the Main menu.

5. Data Field: Touch to display a different data field (e.g., arrival time, distance to destination).

6. Vehicle Icon: Touch to view the Where Am I? page.

7. Trip Computer: Touch the speed field to view the trip computer.

Your route is marked with a magenta line. A checkered flag marks your destination. A speed limit icon may also appear, displaying the current speed limit of the roadway.

To view the trip computer, touch the Speed field on the map. The trip computer displays your current speed and provides statistics about your trip.

To reset trip computer information:

• Touch Reset > Reset Trip Data to reset the information on the trip computer.

• Touch Reset > Reset Max to reset the maximum speed.

• Touch Reset > Reset Fuel Price to reset the fuel price.

• JPEG and JPG image files: for picture viewer and photo navigation.

• Maps and GPX waypoint files from MapSource®.

• GPI custom POI files from Garmin POI Loader.

1. Insert a memory card (optional). Press it in until it clicks.

2. Connect the mini-USB connector to the back of the GARMIN NUVI 1240.

3. Connect the larger end of the cable to an available USB port on your computer.

Your GARMIN NUVI 1240 and memory card will appear as removable drives in My Computer on Windows and as mounted volumes on Mac computers.

Transferring Files:

1. Browse your computer for the file you want to copy.

2. Highlight the file, and click Edit > Copy.

3. Open the “Garmin” or memory card drive/volume.

4. Click Edit > Paste. The file appears in the list of files in the GARMIN NUVI 1240 memory or on the memory card.

5. When you are finished, safely eject the device from your computer.

6. Unplug your GARMIN NUVI 1240 from your computer.

Deleting Files:

1. Connect the GARMIN NUVI 1240 to your computer, and open the drive/volume.

2. Highlight the file you want to delete.

3. Press the Delete key on the computer keyboard.

CAUTION: If you do not know the purpose of a file, do not delete it. Your GARMIN NUVI 1240 memory contains important system files that should not be deleted.

Touch Tools > ecoRoute. The ecoRoute feature calculates your vehicle fuel economy, carbon footprint, and the fuel price of navigating to a destination. To receive more-accurate fuel reports, you should calibrate the fuel economy.

Calibrating the Fuel Economy:

1. Calculate your miles per gallon or liters per 100 kilometers when you fill up your fuel tank.

2. Touch Tools > ecoRoute > Fuel Report > Calibrate.

3. Use the on-screen controls to enter the result from step 1.

4. Touch OK.

Adjusting the Fuel Price:

1. Touch Tools > ecoRoute > Fuel Price.

2. Enter the current fuel price, and touch Done.

Viewing the Mileage Report:

1. Touch Tools > ecoRoute > Mileage Report.

2. Select a report to view.

Your GARMIN NUVI 1240 can receive FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) content with an optional traffic receiver. When receiving traffic information, a traffic icon appears in the upper-left corner of the Map page. The icon changes color to indicate the severity of traffic conditions.

When calculating your route, the GARMIN NUVI 1240 examines the current traffic and automatically optimizes the route for the shortest time. If a severe traffic delay occurs on your route, the device automatically recalculates the route.

1. On the Map page, touch the traffic icon.

2. Touch Traffic On Route.

3. Touch the arrows to view other traffic delays on your route, if necessary.

4. Touch Avoid to avoid the traffic delay.

Touch Tools > Settings > System to change the following:

• GPS Simulator: Turn on the simulator to turn off the GPS mode and simulate navigation, and to save battery power.

• Keyboard: Touch QWERTY for a layout similar to a computer keyboard, or touch ABCDE for an alphabetical layout.

• Units: Change units of measure to Kilometers or Miles.

• About: Display the software version number, unit ID number, and other software feature information.

• Restore: Restore the system settings.

Touch Tools > Settings > Navigation to change the following:

• Route Preference: Select a preference for calculating your route (Faster Time, Shorter Distance, Off Road, Less Fuel).

• Avoidances: Select the road types you want to avoid on your routes.

• Restore: Restore the original navigation settings.

Touch Tools > Settings > Map to change the following:

• Map Detail: Adjust the amount of detail shown on the map.

• Map View: Select a map perspective (Track Up, North Up, 3D).

• Vehicle: Touch Change to change the icon used to display your position on the map.

• Trip Log: Show or hide the log of your travels.

• Map Info: View the maps loaded on your device and enable or disable them.

• Restore: Restore the original map settings.

1. Touch Tools > Settings.

2. Touch Restore.

3. Touch Yes.

Caring for the Unit:

Your GARMIN NUVI 1240 contains sensitive electronic components. To minimize the risk of damage, avoid dropping your unit and operating it in high-shock and high-vibration environments.

Cleaning the Unit:

Clean the outer casing (not the touchscreen) using a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution, and then wipe it dry. Avoid chemical cleaners and solvents that can damage plastic components.

Cleaning the Touchscreen:

Clean the touchscreen with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Use water, isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglass cleaner, if needed. Apply the liquid to the cloth, and then gently wipe the touchscreen.

1. Turn off the GARMIN NUVI 1240.

2. Hold the upper-left corner of the screen while turning on the device.

3. Release the Power button when the Garmin screen appears.

4. Continue to hold the upper-left corner of the touch screen for 30 seconds until a white screen with “Press dot” appears.

IMPORTANT: This deletes all user-entered information.

1. Hold your finger on the lower-right corner of the GARMIN NUVI 1240 screen while turning on the device.

2. Keep your finger pressed until the pop-up window appears.

3. Touch Yes to clear all user data. All original settings are restored, and any items you have saved are erased.

Charge your GARMIN NUVI 1240 for at least 4 hours before using it on battery power. You can charge it by:

• Connecting the vehicle power cable.

• Connecting the USB cable (included in some packages).

• Connecting an AC adapter (optional accessory).

To maximize the lifetime of the battery, do not leave your device in direct sunlight, and avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat. To increase the accuracy of the battery gauge, fully discharge the battery and then fully charge it. Do not unplug the GARMIN NUVI 1240 until it is totally charged.

If your unit will not charge in your vehicle, you might need to replace the fuse located at the tip of the vehicle adapter.

1. Unscrew the black, round end piece, and remove it. You may need to use a coin to remove the end piece.

2. Remove the fuse (glass and silver cylinder), and replace it with the appropriate fuse type, which can be found on the side of the vehicle adapter.

3. Ensure that the silver tip is placed in the black end piece. Screw on the black end piece.

Take your GARMIN NUVI 1240 out of parking garages and away from tall buildings and trees. Remain stationary for several minutes.

Clean the suction cup and windshield with rubbing alcohol. Dry with a clean, dry cloth. Mount the suction cup as described in the setup instructions.

Check the fuse in the vehicle power cable. Ensure the vehicle is turned on and is supplying power to the power outlet. Your GARMIN NUVI 1240 can only charge between 32°F and 113°F (between 0°C and 45°C). If the device is placed in direct sunlight or in a hot environment, it cannot charge.

To maximize the time between charges, turn down the backlight. Touch Tools > Settings > Display > Brightness.

Allow the unit to fully discharge, and then fully charge it without interrupting the charge cycle.

Calibrate the touchscreen. Turn the device off. Press and hold the top-left corner of the screen while powering it on. Continue to hold until the “Press dot” screen appears and follow the instructions.

1. Unplug the USB cable from your computer.

2. Turn off the GARMIN NUVI 1240.

3. Plug the USB cable into a USB port on your computer and into your GARMIN NUVI 1240. The device should automatically turn on and go into USB mass storage mode. Ensure your device is connected to a USB port and not a USB hub.
