When using your EURO-PRO 473A sewing machine, basic safety precautions should always be followed:

DANGER – To reduce the risk of electric shock:

An appliance should never be left unattended when plugged in. Always unplug this appliance from the electric outlet immediately after using and before cleaning.

Always unplug before relamping. Replace bulb with same type rated 15 watts.

WARNING – To reduce the risk of burns, fire, electric shock, or injury to persons:

1. Do not allow to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when this appliance is used by or near children.

2. Use this appliance only for its intended use as described in this manual. Use only attachments recommended by the manufacturer as contained in this manual.

3. Never operate this appliance if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it has been dropped or damaged, or dropped into water. Return the appliance to the nearest authorized dealer or service center for examination, repair, electrical or mechanical adjustment.

4. Never operate the appliance with any air openings blocked. Keep ventilation openings of the sewing machine and foot controller free from the accumulation of lint, dust, and loose cloth.

5. Never drop or insert any object into any opening.

6. Do not use outdoors.

7. Do not operate where aerosol (spray) products are being used or where oxygen is being administered.

8. To disconnect, turn all controls to the off (“0”) position, then remove plug from outlet.

9. Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord.

10. Keep fingers away from all moving parts. Special care is required around the sewing machine needle.

11. Always use the proper needle plate. The wrong plate can cause the needle to break.

12. Do not use bent needles.

13. Do not pull or push fabric while stitching. It may deflect the needle causing it to break.

14. Unplug the sewing machine when making any adjustments in the needle area, such as threading needle, changing needle, threading bobbin, or changing presser foot, etc.

15. Always unplug sewing machine from the electrical outlet when removing covers, lubricating, or when making any other user servicing adjustments mentioned in the instruction manual.

This sewing machine is intended for household use only.

1. Fit the plug into the machine’s receptacle.

2. Insert the power supply plug into the mains socket (wall outlet).

3. The sewing speed can be varied by using the foot controller.

Note: Use only FDM model KD-1902 foot controller with the EURO-PRO 473A sewing machine.

CAUTION: Always disconnect the machine from the power source when the machine is not being used, when cleaning the machine or when changing the lamp.

1. Open the face cover in the direction of the arrow.

2. Remove the old bulb by turning it counter-clockwise.

3. Install a new bulb by screwing it in clockwise.

4. Use a screw-type bulb with 15W (max.).

To remove the extension table, hold the snap-in sewing table horizontally and push it in the direction of the arrow to remove it. The inside of the snap-in sewing table can be used as an accessory box.

Removing the extension table converts the EURO-PRO 473A from a flat bed machine to a free-arm machine, which is especially useful for sewing sleeves, pant legs, and other tubular fabrics more easily. To sew these items, just slip the sleeve or leg of the pants over the free arm as shown in the manual’s illustration.

1. Disengage the sewing function by pulling the hand wheel out.

2. Thread the machine for bobbin winding as shown in the manual’s illustration.

3. Push the bobbin winder spindle in the direction of the arrow.

4. Once the bobbin is filled, re-engage the clutch by pushing the hand wheel back in. Return the spindle to its original position.

If the bobbin winding is incorrect, release the screw of the upper thread guide and adjust it up or down until the winding is balanced.

1. Raise the needle to its highest position and open the shuttle race cover.

2. Open the hinged latch of the bobbin case and pull the bobbin case out of the machine.

3. Release the latch, and the bobbin will fall out easily.

1. Pull 5 cm of thread from the bobbin and insert it into the bobbin case as shown.

2. Guide the end of the thread into the slot.

3. Pull the thread through the slot and under the tension spring, then draw out about 10 cm of thread.

1. Raise the needle to its highest position. Pull the thread to the front, open the latch of the bobbin case and hold it.

2. While holding the latch open, place the bobbin case onto the center pin in the shuttle and then release the latch.

3. Ensure that the metal finger of the bobbin case fits into the notch at the top of the race cover.

Caution: Before threading, turn the power switch to “O”.

1. Raise the needle bar to its highest position.

2. Follow the numbered threading sequence illustrated in the manual exactly. If you skip a step or fail to properly engage the thread in any of the thread guides, the machine will not sew properly (Sequence A-E in manual).

3. Continue to draw the thread down and into the needle bar thread guide.

4. Insert the thread through the eye of the needle from front to back.

5. Leave about 4 inches (10 cm) of thread loose behind the needle.

For twin needle threading (optional accessory), pass the thread from front to rear through the needle and pull approximately 10 cm of thread through the eye of the needle.

1. Hold the upper thread with your left hand. Turn the hand wheel slowly towards you until the needle goes down and comes back up. Stop the hand wheel when the take-up lever is at its highest position.

2. Lightly draw up the upper thread, which will bring the lower thread up in a loop.

3. Pull out both threads and place them together under the presser foot to the rear of the machine.

1. Lower the needle down into the fabric and raise the presser foot.

2. Pivot the fabric around the needle to change the direction as desired.

3. Lower the presser foot and start to sew.

If the EURO-PRO 473A sewing machine is not level, remove the sewing table and adjust the leveling by turning the foot as illustrated in the manual. Turn the foot to adjust the machine up or down until it is stable.

Upper Thread Tension:

The upper thread tension can be adjusted by turning the thread tension dial. The normal upper thread tension setting is between 4 and 6.

• A. Normal thread tension: The upper and lower threads interlock evenly between the two layers of fabric.
• B. Thread tension too loose: The upper thread appears as loops on the bottom side of the fabric. Increase the upper thread tension.
• C. Thread tension too tight: The lower thread is visible on the top side of the fabric. Decrease the upper thread tension.

Lower Thread Tension:

The lower thread tension can be adjusted using the small screw on the bobbin case. Turning the screw slightly to the right (clockwise) increases the tension. Turning it to the left (counter-clockwise) decreases the tension.

1. Push down the lever for the desired pressure. To adjust, use the lever located behind the cover of the lamp. You may need to loosen the stop screw of the lamp cover to open it.

• For light fabrics, set the lever at 3.
• For medium fabrics, set the lever at 2.
• For heavy fabrics, set the lever at 1.

2. Insufficient pressure may cause poor feeding, skipped stitches, or difficulty in guiding the fabric.

3. When darning or sewing freehand embroidery, release the pressure by setting the lever to 0.

After adjusting the presser foot pressure and closing the lamp cover, tighten up the stop screw. The lever is usually adjusted at 2.

A. To drop the feed dogs for darning, embroidery, and button sewing, push the feed lever down. This will lower the feed dogs below the needle plate.

B. To raise the feed dogs for normal sewing, push the feed lever up. This will raise the feed dogs above the needle plate.

1. Raise the needle bar to its highest position.

2. Loosen the needle clamp screw and remove the old needle.

3. With the flat side of the new needle facing away from you (to the back), insert the needle as far up as it will go.

4. Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.

1. Raise the take-up lever to its highest position before starting and after stopping sewing.

2. Hold both threads about 10 cms to the rear of the machine for the first two or three stitches.

3. Sufficient fabric should be placed under the needle before lowering the presser foot.

4. Depress the foot/speed control and start to sew.

5. Test the machine stitches on a scrap of fabric you plan to use, adjusting the machine for the length of the stitch and tension suitable to your fabric.

Attention: When turning the balance wheel manually, always turn it toward you. Guide the cloth gently with your hand. To prevent breaking needles, always raise the needle out of the fabric when you stop sewing.

1. Sew to the edge of the seam.

2. Push the reverse button and sew in reverse for about 3-4 cms to lock the stitch.

3. Raise the needle into its highest position.

4. Lift the presser foot and pull the fabric out of the back of the machine.

5. Cut the threads using the thread cutter on the side of the machine.

Zigzag Stitch:

The density of zigzag stitches increases as the setting of the stitch length dial approaches “0”. Neat zigzag stitches are usually achieved at a setting of “2.5” or below.

Satin Stitch:

When the stitch length is set between “0” and “1”, the stitches are very close together, producing the satin stitch. This is used for making buttonholes and decorative stitches.

Sewing Thin Fabrics:

When sewing very thin fabrics, it is suggested that you use very fine paper on the backside of the fabric that can be easily torn off when the sewing is finished.

Use the overcasting stitches (slant over edge pattern) for oversewing rough edges. This stitch prevents the edges of the fabric from fraying.

Use the straight stretch stitch with knitted, tricot, or other stretchy fabrics. This stitch enables your seam to stretch without breaking the thread.

1. Use the Blind Stitch foot for hems, curtains, trousers, skirts, etc.

2. Set the Stitch Selector to position “G” for a blind hem on stretch fabrics.

3. Set the Stitch Length to “4”.

4. Fold the fabric as illustrated in the manual with the wrong side uppermost.

5. Place the fabric under the foot. Turn the handwheel forward by hand until the needle swings fully to the left. It should just pierce the fold of the fabric.

6. Adjust the guide (2) by turning the knob (3) so that the guide just rests against the fabric fold.

7. Sew slowly, by pressing the foot control lightly and guiding the fabric along the edge of the guide.

Note: It takes practice to sew blind hems. Always make a sewing test first.

This requires the optional Button foot.

1. Lower the drop feed by pushing the feed lever down.

2. Attach the button presser foot firmly.

3. Place the button between the presser foot and fabric, then lower the presser foot.

4. Manually turn the hand wheel towards you, ensuring that the needle enters into both holes of the button without obstruction. Adjust the zigzag width setting if necessary.

5. Sew about 7 stitches.

6. Pull both threads to the underside and tie them together.

1. Select the straight stitch and attach the zipper foot.

2. Fold the fabric about 2 cm and place the fabric under the foot. The zipper foot is designed to sew close to a raised edge, preventing sewing on the zipper itself.

3. To sew the left side of the zipper, set the zipper foot on the right side of the needle.

4. To sew the right side of the zipper, set the zipper foot on the left side of the needle.

5. Sew as illustrated in the manual.

Preparation:

1. Remove the zigzag foot and attach the buttonhole foot.

2. Adjust the stitch length dial to between “0.5” and “1”. The density of the stitch depends on the thickness of the fabric. Always test sew a buttonhole first.

3. Measure the diameter of the button and add 0.3 cm (1/8″) for the bartacks. Mark the position and length of the buttonhole on the fabric.

Sewing Steps:

1. Position the fabric so that the needle is on the mark that is furthest from you. Pull the buttonhole foot towards you as far as it will go and lower the foot.

2. (a) Turn the pattern selector dial to the first buttonhole icon. Sew at a moderate speed until you reach the end mark.

3. (b) Turn the pattern selector dial to the second icon and sew 5-6 bartack stitches.

4. (c) Turn the pattern selector dial to the third icon and sew the left side of the buttonhole to the mark at the end which is further from you.

5. (d) Turn the pattern selector dial to the fourth icon and sew bar tack stitches.

Finishing:

Remove the fabric from under the foot. Draw the upper thread through to the backside of the fabric and knot the upper and lower threads. Cut the center of the buttonhole with the seam ripper, being careful not to cut the stitches on either side.

Tips:

Slightly reduce upper thread tension for better results. Use backing material for fine and stretchy fabrics. For stretch or knit fabrics, it is advisable to use a gimp cord; the zigzag should sew over the gimp.

This requires the optional Darning/Embroidery foot.

1. Move the drop feed control down to lower the feed dogs.

2. Remove the presser foot clamp.

3. Attach the darning/embroidery foot to the presser foot bar. The lever (A) should be behind the needle clamp screw (B). Press the foot on firmly from behind with your index finger and tighten the screw (C).

4. First, sew around the edge of the hole to secure the threads.

5. The first row should be worked from left to right. Then, turn the work by 1/4 and oversew.

A darning ring is recommended for easier sewing and better results (not provided).

Cleaning the Shuttle Race:

1. Raise the needle to its highest position.

2. Take out the bobbin case.

3. Turn the latch knobs (A) as illustrated.

4. Take off the shuttle race cover (B).

5. Take out the shuttle hook (C).

6. Clean and oil the shuttle race and hook, then replace all parts in reverse order.

Cleaning the Feed Dog:

Clean the feed dogs with a brush.

Oiling:

Open the face cover and oil the parts indicated in the manual’s diagram.
