To set up the DELONGHI ECAM35X.50 for the first time, follow these steps:

1. Connect the appliance to the mains supply.
2. Remove the water tank, fill to the MAX line with fresh water, then return it to its position.
3. Check that the hot water spout is connected to the nozzle and place a container of minimum capacity 200 ml underneath the hot water spout and the coffee spout.
4. The indicator light (General Alarm) and the OK icon blink. Press the OK icon: the machine will deliver hot water.
5. The coffee machine is now ready for normal use.

Please note: When using the appliance for the first time, 4-5 cappuccinos need to be made before it starts to give satisfactory results. It is normal to hear the noise of boiling water during the first few cappuccinos.

To turn the machine on, press the on/off button. All of the indicator lights and the icons will shine on the control panel, and all the beverage icons then blink. Every time the appliance is turned on, it automatically performs a preheat and rinse cycle which cannot be interrupted. The appliance is not ready for use until the cycle has been completed.

To turn the appliance off, press the on/off button. Whenever the machine is turned off after being used to make coffee, it performs an automatic rinse cycle. If provided for, the appliance performs a rinse cycle then goes off (stand-by). If you will not be using the appliance for some time, unplug it from the mains socket after turning it off.

To change the temperature of the water used for making coffee (low, medium, high), proceed as follows:

1. With the machine off (in standby mode) but still plugged into the electrical power supply;
2. Press and hold the “2x” icon until the indicators on the touch screen light up;
3. Press the Espresso icon;
4. Press the Espresso icon again to select the desired temperature:
   • Low
   • Medium
   • High
5. Press the OK icon to confirm (or ESC to exit without making any change). The lights go off. The appliance returns to “standby” and the temperature is now programmed.

The time can be changed so that the appliance switches off after being idle for 15 or 30 minutes, or after 1, 2 or 3 hours. To re-programme Auto-off:

1. With the machine off (in standby mode) but still plugged into the electrical power supply;
2. Press and hold the “2x” icon until the icons on the touch screen light up;
3. Press the Coffee icon;
4. Press the Coffee icon again to select the desired time interval:
   • 15 min.
   • 30 min.
   • 1 hour
   • 2 hours
   • 3 hours
5. Press the OK icon to confirm (or ESC to exit without making any change). The lights go off. The auto-off time is now programmed.

Use this function to enable or disable energy saving. This mode is active by default. To change the setting:

1. With the machine off (in standby mode) but still plugged into the electrical power supply;
2. Press and hold the “2x” icon until the indicators on the touch screen light up.
3. Press the Latte Macchiato icon;
4. Press the Latte Macchiato icon again to enable/disable the function.
5. Press the OK icon to confirm (or ESC to exit without making any change). The lights go off.

Please note: In energy saving mode, a few seconds may elapse before the first coffee is delivered as the appliance must heat up again.

To enable or disable the beep:

1. With the machine off (in standby mode) but still plugged into the electrical power supply;
2. Press and hold the “2x” icon until the indicators on the touch screen light up.
3. Press the “2x” icon to enable/disable the function.
4. Press the OK icon to confirm (or ESC to exit without making any change). The lights go off.

This function resets all settings (temperature, auto-off, water hardness, energy saving and all quantity settings are reset to the default values).

1. With the machine off (in standby mode) but still plugged into the electrical power supply;
2. Press and hold the “2x” icon until the indicators on the touch screen light up.
3. Press the Cappuccino icon: the beans icon on the touch screen will blink;
4. Press the OK icon to reset the default values (or ESC to exit without making any change). The lights go off.

The coffee mill is set by default to prepare coffee correctly and should not require regulating initially. However, if the coffee is delivered too slowly or not at all, or if it is not creamy enough, adjust the grinding adjustment dial.

Important: The grinding adjustment dial must be used only when the coffee mill is in operation.

• If the coffee is delivered too slowly or not at all, turn one click clockwise towards 7.
• For fuller bodied creamier coffee, turn one click anticlockwise towards 1 (do not turn more than one click at a time otherwise the coffee could be delivered a drop at a time).

The effect of the adjustment will be noticed only after making a further 2 cups of coffee, at least.

To make a hotter coffee, proceed as follows:

• Perform a rinse cycle by pressing the OK icon.
• Warm the cups with hot water using the hot water function.
• Increase the coffee temperature in the settings menu.

1. Fill the beans container with coffee beans.
2. Place 1 cup under the coffee spouts to make 1 coffee, or 2 cups to make 2 coffees.
3. Lower the spouts as near as possible to the cup for a creamier coffee.
4. Select your required coffee (Espresso, Coffee).
5. Preparation begins and the indicator corresponding to the selected icon blinks on the touch screen.

To make 2 cups of “Espresso” at the same time, press the “2x” icon, then press the Espresso icon. Alternatively, press Espresso: preparation begins and the “2x” icon blinks; press the “2x” icon while it is blinking.

To vary the aroma of the coffee temporarily, press the aroma selection button (coffee bean icon) to cycle through:

• EXTRA LIGHT
• LIGHT
• MEDIUM
• STRONG
• X-STRONG

Important: Never add pre-ground coffee when the machine is off. Never use more than 1 level measure. Only one cup can be made at a time.

1. Press the aroma button repeatedly until the pre-ground function indicator light appears.
2. Make sure the funnel is not blocked, then add one level measure of pre-ground coffee.
3. Place a cup under the coffee spouts.
4. Select your required coffee (Espresso or Coffee).
5. Preparation begins.

1. Place a sufficiently large cup or glass under the coffee spouts.
2. Press the aroma button to select the desired aroma.
3. Press and hold the icon corresponding to the coffee to be customized: the icon blinks and all the alarm indicator lights also blink.
4. Release the icon. The icon blinks and the appliance starts delivering coffee.
5. As soon as the coffee in the cup reaches the required level, press the coffee icon again.

The aroma and quantity of coffee in the cup has now been programmed.

1. Remove the lid of the milk container.
2. Fill the milk container with a sufficient quantity of milk, not exceeding the MAX level marked on the container.
3. Make sure the milk intake tube is correctly inserted in the bottom of the milk container lid.
4. Place the lid back on the milk container.
5. Remove the hot water spout from the nozzle.
6. Attach the container to the connection nozzle and push as far as it will go.

Turn the froth adjustment dial on the milk container to adjust the amount of froth:

• No froth: Recommended for HOT MILK (not frothed).
• Min. froth: Recommended for LATTE MACCHIATO.
• Max. froth: Recommended for CAPPUCCINO / HOT MILK (frothed).

1. Fill the milk container and attach it to the machine.
2. Place a cup under the coffee spouts and the frothed milk spout. Adjust the length of the milk spout if needed.
3. Select the required beverage (Cappuccino, Macchiato, or Hot Milk).
4. After a few seconds, the appliance starts preparing the selected beverage automatically.

Every time a drink is prepared with milk, the lid of the milk container must be cleaned to eliminate all milk residues:

1. Leave the milk container in the machine (it does not have to be emptied).
2. Place a cup or other recipient under the frothed milk spout.
3. Turn the froth adjustment dial to “CLEAN”. Cleaning stops automatically.
4. Turn the dial back to one of the froth selections.
5. Remove the milk container and clean the steam connection nozzle with a sponge.

1. Make sure the hot water spout is attached correctly.
2. Place a container under the water spout.
3. Press the ESC icon (which functions as the hot water button when the spout is attached).
4. The machine delivers about 250 ml of hot water, then delivery stops automatically. To interrupt manually, press ESC.

When the grounds container indicator light appears, it must be emptied and cleaned. The appliance cannot be used to make coffee again until this is done. Even if not full, the message is displayed 72 hours after the first coffee.

• Remove the drip tray, empty, and clean.
• Empty the grounds container and clean thoroughly to remove all residues left on the bottom.
• Check the red condensate tray and empty if necessary.

Important: When removing the drip tray, the grounds container must be emptied, even if it contains few grounds.

The drip tray is fitted with a level indicator (red). Before the indicator protrudes from the cup tray, the drip tray must be emptied and cleaned.

1. Remove the drip tray and grounds container.
2. Remove the cup tray and drip tray grille, then empty the drip tray and grounds container and wash all components.
3. Check the red condensate tray and empty if necessary.
4. Replace the drip tray complete with grille and the grounds container.

The infuser must be cleaned at least once a month. Important: The infuser cannot be extracted while the machine is on.

1. Make sure the machine is correctly turned off.
2. Remove the water tank.
3. Open the infuser door on the right side of the appliance.
4. Press the two coloured release buttons inwards and at the same time pull the infuser outwards.
5. Soak the infuser in water for about 5 minutes, then rinse under the tap. RINSE WITH WATER ONLY. NO DETERGENTS – NO DISHWASHER.
6. Use the brush to remove any coffee residues left in the infuser housing.
7. Replace the infuser by sliding it onto the internal support, then push the PUSH symbol fully in until it clicks into place.
8. Close the infuser door and replace the water tank.

Descale the machine when the descaling indicator lights up on the panel.

1. Take out the water tank, remove the water softener filter (if present) and empty the water.
2. Pour De’Longhi “EcoDecalk” descaler into the tank up to level A (100 ml), then add water up to level B (1 litre) and replace the tank.
3. Remove, empty and replace the drip tray and grounds container.
4. Place an empty container with a minimum capacity of 1.8 litres under the hot water spout and coffee spouts. Press OK.
5. The descale programme starts. After the cycle, the appliance is ready to be rinsed.
6. Empty the container used to collect the descaler. Remove the water tank, empty, rinse, and fill with clean water up to the MAX level. Reposition it.
7. Empty the container used to collect the descaler solution, then position it under the spouts. Press OK.
8. Hot water is delivered. When the water in the tank has run out, empty the container.
9. Take out the water tank, fill with fresh water to MAX level. If the filter was removed, replace it now. Reposition the tank.
10. Empty the collection container and position it under the hot water spout. Press OK.
11. At the end of the second rinse, remove, empty and replace the drip tray and grounds container.
12. Empty the collection container, remove the water tank, empty, rinse, fill to MAX with clean water, and reposition. The cycle is complete.

1. Measure water hardness using the “TOTAL HARDNESS TEST” reagent strip.
2. With the machine off (standby), press and hold the “2x” icon until indicator lights appear.
3. Press the aroma button.
4. Press the aroma button again to select the water hardness level (Low, Medium, High, Maximum) corresponding to the test strip results.
5. Press the OK icon to confirm.

1. Turn the date indicator disk on the filter until the next two months of use are displayed.
2. Run tap water through the hole in the filter until water comes out of the openings at the side for more than a minute.
3. Remove the tank from the appliance and fill with water.
4. Insert the filter in the water tank and immerse it completely for about ten seconds, sloping it to enable air bubbles to escape.
5. Insert the filter in the filter housing and press fully home. Close the tank with the lid and replace in the machine.
6. Attach the hot water spout. Place a container under the spout.
7. Press the ESC icon to deliver hot water. Release at least 500 ml of water, then press ESC again to stop.
