How does the “Dry Mode” function work on the CARRIER TRANSICOLD AIRV 68RV15103A?
How does the cooling cycle work on a standard CARRIER TRANSICOLD AIRV 68RV15103A system?
The cooling cycle is energized when the thermostat calls for cooling. The main components are the compressor, air-cooled condenser coil, strainer, capillary tube, evaporator coil, and accumulator.
1. The compressor raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant and forces it into the condenser coil.
2. The condenser fan circulates surrounding air over the outside of the coil tubes. Heat transfers from the refrigerant to the air, causing the refrigerant to liquefy.
3. Liquid refrigerant flows through a strainer (which removes impurities) to the capillary tube.
4. The capillary tube meters the flow of liquid refrigerant to the evaporator coil, reducing its pressure and temperature.
5. The evaporator blower pulls vehicle air through filters and then through the evaporator coil.
6. The cold liquid refrigerant in the evaporator coil tubes absorbs heat from the vehicle air. This cools the air, which is then circulated into the vehicle interior.
7. The heat absorption causes the refrigerant to vaporize. This low-pressure vapor passes into the accumulator, which ensures only vapor refrigerant is returned to the compressor to repeat the cycle.
How does the cooling cycle work on a heat pump CARRIER TRANSICOLD AIRV 68RV15103A?
The cooling cycle is energized when the thermostat calls for cooling. The system controls are positioned for “normal” refrigerant flow. The main components are the compressor, reversing valve, air-cooled outdoor coil, strainer, capillary tube, indoor coil, and the accumulator.
1. The compressor raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant and forces it through the reversing valve into the outdoor coil.
2. The outdoor fan circulates air over the coil, removing heat from the refrigerant and causing it to liquefy.
3. Liquid refrigerant flows through the strainer to the capillary tube, which meters the flow to the indoor coil, reducing its pressure and temperature.
4. The indoor blower pulls inside air through filters and across the indoor coil.
5. The cold refrigerant in the indoor coil absorbs heat from the air, cooling the air that is circulated into the vehicle.
6. This heat absorption vaporizes the refrigerant. The low-pressure vapor then passes into the accumulator, which ensures only vapor returns to the compressor to repeat the cycle.
How does the heating cycle work on a heat pump CARRIER TRANSICOLD AIRV 68RV15103A?
The heating cycle is energized when the thermostat calls for heat. The system controls are positioned for “reverse” refrigerant flow. The main components are the compressor, reversing valve, indoor coil, capillary tube, strainer, air-cooled outdoor coil, and the accumulator.
1. The compressor raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant and forces it through the reversing valve into the indoor coil.
2. The indoor blower pulls inside air through the filters and passes it over the indoor coil.
3. The hot refrigerant gas inside the indoor coil transfers heat to the vehicle air. This removal of heat causes the refrigerant to liquefy.
4. The liquid refrigerant flows through the strainer to the outdoor coil via the capillary tube, which reduces its pressure and temperature.
5. The low-temperature liquid in the outdoor coil absorbs heat from the outdoor air that is circulated over the tubes, causing the liquid to vaporize.
6. This low-pressure vapor passes into the accumulator, which ensures only vapor refrigerant is returned to the compressor, where the cycle repeats.

How do I test and replace a capacitor on the CARRIER TRANSICOLD AIRV 68RV15103A?
WARNING: Disconnect power to the AirV unit before checking the capacitor.
Capacitors must be discharged properly before testing.
a. Place a 20,000 ohm, 2 watt resistor across the terminals of the capacitor for approximately 30 seconds. WARNING: Do not touch the metal of the screwdriver when discharging the capacitor. You could receive a shock.
b. After the capacitor has been discharged and all wires removed, use an ohmmeter to test its resistance.
c. Set the scale to R x 1K or 10K ohm and place the ohmmeter leads across the capacitor terminals.
d. If the ohmmeter first reads 0, then rises toward infinity or some higher resistance, the capacitor is good.
e. If the ohmmeter goes to 0 or a low resistance and stays there, the capacitor is shorted and needs to be replaced.
f. If the ohmmeter reads infinity (OL), the capacitor is open and needs to be replaced.
To determine a capacitor’s capacitance, a capacitor meter is required. Capacitors showing signs of leaks or bulging should be replaced immediately.
How do I troubleshoot the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Start Thermistor on the CARRIER TRANSICOLD AIRV 68RV15103A?
a. Disconnect power from the AirV unit.
b. Disconnect the wires to the PTC.
c. Using an ohm meter, check for continuity across the PTC. If the PTC does not have continuity, it must be replaced. If continuity exists, reconnect the wires to the PTC.
d. Reconnect power to the AirV unit.
e. Turn on the AirV unit to start.
f. Use a clamp-on amp probe to monitor the amp draw of the compressor during its start-up. When the compressor starts, an amp draw will be indicated for almost a second. If no amp draw is indicated or if the amp draw occurs for much longer than a second, the PTC is defective and must be replaced.

How do I install and operate a wall-mounted thermostat for the CARRIER TRANSICOLD AIRV 68RV15103A?
Thermostat Location
The thermostat should be mounted approximately 5 feet (1.5m) from the floor, on an inside partitioning wall without pipes or duct work, and in a frequently used room. It should NOT be mounted near a window, outside wall, door, in direct sunlight or heat, near air registers, or in areas with poor air circulation.
Installation
a. Turn off all power to the unit.
b. If replacing an old thermostat, disconnect wires one at a time, recording the wire color and terminal marking for each.
c. Separate the front and back pieces of the new thermostat.
d. Route wires through the hole in the back piece, level it against the wall, and mark the two mounting holes.
e. Drill two 3/16 inch mounting holes.
f. Secure the back piece to the wall with the provided anchors and screws.
g. Connect wires to the proper terminals on the front piece.
h. Push any excess wire back into the wall and seal the hole to prevent air leaks.
i. Snap the front and back pieces together.
j. Turn on power to the unit.
Set Thermostat Configuration
Enter and hold the FAN button for approximately 10 seconds until the display reads A. You are now in configuration mode. Options include: A – Anticipator Value, d – Fahrenheit/Celsius Selection, oF – Room Temperature Offset. Use UP/DOWN buttons to select an option and MODE button to change its value.
Check Thermostat Operation (Cool Only)
1. Press FAN button for low speed, again for high speed, and a third time to turn it off.
2. Press MODE button until COOL is displayed. Press DOWN button until the readout is 10 degrees below room temperature. The cooling and high fan system should begin to operate within 5 minutes.
Timer Functions and Error Messages
The thermostat has a 3-minute timeguard on compressor start-up, a 15-minute cycle timer, and a 2-minute minimum on timer. An ‘E4’ error indicates internal memory failure (replace thermostat). Two dashes (–) indicate a room temperature reading failure (replace thermostat).
