To start using your CANON EOS 77D immediately, follow these steps:

Step 1. Insert the battery into the battery compartment until it locks into place and close the cover.

Step 2. Insert the SD card with the label facing toward the back of the camera into the card slot until it clicks, then close the cover.

Step 3. Attach the lens by aligning the lens’s white or red mount index with the camera’s mount index of the same color. Turn the lens as shown by the arrow until it clicks in place.

Step 4. Set the lens’s focus mode switch to AF (Autofocus).

Step 5. Set the power switch to ON, then set the Mode Dial to Scene Intelligent Auto (A+) while holding down the lock release button at the center of the dial.

Step 6. Flip out the LCD monitor.

Step 7. Focus on the subject by looking through the viewfinder and pressing the shutter button halfway.

Step 8. Take the picture by pressing the shutter button completely.

Step 9. Review the captured image on the LCD monitor for approximately 2 seconds.

The CANON EOS 77D supports the following cards regardless of capacity:

SD memory cards

SDHC memory cards (UHS-I cards supported)

SDXC memory cards (UHS-I cards supported)

Note: Multimedia cards (MMC) cannot be used with the CANON EOS 77D as they will cause a card error display.

When shooting movies with the CANON EOS 77D, use a large-capacity card with a reading/writing speed class as follows:

To charge the LP-E17 battery pack for your CANON EOS 77D:

1. Remove the protective cover from the battery pack.

2. Attach the battery securely to the battery charger (LC-E17 or LC-E17E).

3. For the LC-E17 charger, flip out the prongs and insert them into a power outlet. For the LC-E17E, connect the power cord to the charger and insert the plug into a power outlet.

4. Recharging starts automatically. The charge lamp lights up in orange during charging and turns green when the battery is fully recharged.

5. It takes approximately 2 hours to fully recharge a completely exhausted battery at room temperature (23°C / 73°F).

The number of possible shots with the CANON EOS 77D using a fully-charged LP-E17 battery pack and viewfinder shooting is estimated below:

To format a card with your CANON EOS 77D:

1. Press the MENU button to display the menu screen.

2. Under the Setup 1 (wrench icon) tab, select [Format card], then press the SET button.

3. Select [OK] and press SET. The card will be formatted. Once complete, the menu will reappear.

4. For a low-level format, press the Erase (trash can) button to add a checkmark to [Low level format] before selecting [OK]. This is recommended if the card’s recording or reading speed seems slow or to totally erase all data.

The shutter button on the CANON EOS 77D has two stages:

Pressing Halfway: This activates the autofocusing and the automatic exposure system that sets the shutter speed and aperture. The exposure settings are displayed in the viewfinder and on the top LCD panel.

Pressing Completely: This releases the shutter and captures the picture. You should press the shutter button halfway to focus first, then slowly press it completely to avoid camera shake.

The CANON EOS 77D offers three AF operations for different subjects:

One-Shot AF: Suited for still subjects. When you press the shutter button halfway, the camera will focus only once and the focus will be locked.

AI Servo AF: Suited for moving subjects where the focusing distance keeps changing. The camera will keep focusing on the subject continuously while you hold the shutter button halfway.

AI Focus AF: Automatically switches the AF operation from One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF if a still subject starts moving.

To change the AF area selection mode on your CANON EOS 77D:

1. Press the AF area selection button or the AF point selection button.

2. Look through the viewfinder and press the AF area selection button again. Each time you press the button, the mode changes.

Available modes include: Single-point AF (Manual selection), Zone AF (Manual selection of zone), Large Zone AF (Manual selection of zone), and Automatic selection AF (45 points).

Autofocus may fail with specific subjects. For the CANON EOS 77D, try the following:

Subjects with very low contrast (e.g., blue sky, solid-color surfaces): Use One-Shot AF on an object at the same distance as the subject, lock the focus, and then recompose the shot.

Subjects in very low light: Use the built-in flash to emit an AF-assist beam.

Extremely small subjects or subjects covered by an AF point (e.g., animal in a cage): Set the lens’s focus mode switch to MF (Manual Focus) and turn the lens focusing ring until the subject looks sharp in the viewfinder.

The Creative Auto (CA) mode on the CANON EOS 77D allows you to easily change settings for better photographic results:

1. Set the Mode Dial to CA.

2. Press the Q button to display the Quick Control screen.

3. Use the keys or dials to select functions such as Ambience-based shots (e.g., Vivid, Soft, Warm), Background blur (slide the cursor toward ‘Blurred’ to blur the background), Drive mode (Single or Continuous), and Flash firing (Auto, On, or Off).

4. Press the shutter button to take the picture.

The CANON EOS 77D has an ISO range of 100 to 25600 for still photos. Follow these guidelines for different shooting situations:

Note: Higher ISO speeds will result in grainier images.

To record video with your CANON EOS 77D:

1. Set the power switch to the movie icon position.

2. Set the Mode Dial to any mode other than Special Scene or Creative Filters for autoexposure, or to ‘M’ for manual exposure.

3. Focus on your subject using AF or manual focus before you start recording.

4. Press the Live View shooting/Movie shooting button to start recording. A red dot will appear on the upper right of the screen.

5. To stop recording, press the same button again.

Video snapshots are short clips (2, 4, or 8 seconds) that can be combined into an album on the CANON EOS 77D:

1. Select [Video snapshot] under the Shooting 5 tab in the menu and set it to [Enable].

2. In [Album settings], select [Create a new album] and choose the [Snapshot length] (e.g., 4 sec. movie).

3. Exit the menu and press the Movie shooting button to capture the first snapshot. The blue bar will decrease as time elapses.

4. After the shot, choose [Save as album].

5. Record more snapshots and select [Add to album] to build your movie.

The CANON EOS 77D features automatic and manual sensor cleaning:

Automatic Cleaning: Every time you set the power switch to ON or OFF, the sensor is cleaned automatically. You can also activate this manually by selecting [Sensor cleaning] in the Setup 4 menu and choosing [Clean now].

Manual Cleaning: If dust remains, select [Clean manually] in the [Sensor cleaning] menu. The reflex mirror will lock up. Use a commercially available blower to carefully blow away dust from the sensor surface. Turn the power switch to OFF to finish the operation.

If a problem occurs, the CANON EOS 77D will display an error code. Refer to this table for common solutions:

If your CANON EOS 77D has power issues, check the following:

Battery does not recharge: Use only a genuine Canon Battery Pack LP-E17.

Camera is not activated: Ensure the battery is installed properly, the battery compartment cover is closed, and the card slot cover is closed. Re-press the INFO button to check the display.

Battery exhausts quickly: Use a fully-charged battery and check its recharge performance in the [Battery info.] menu. Frequent use of the LCD monitor, Live View shooting, and Wi-Fi will drain the battery faster.

Camera turns off by itself: Check the [Auto power off] setting in the menu and set it to [Disable] if needed.

The CANON EOS 77D allows you to edit images directly in the camera:

Applying Creative Filters: Under the Playback 1 tab, select [Creative filters]. Choose an image, select a filter (e.g., Grainy B/W, Fish-eye effect, Toy camera effect), adjust the effect, and save it as a new JPEG image.

Resizing JPEG Images: Under the Playback 2 tab, select [Resize]. Select a JPEG image (Large, Medium, or Small 1), choose the target size (Medium, Small 1, or Small 2), and save it as a new image.

Cropping JPEG Images: Under the Playback 2 tab, select [Cropping]. Select an image, press SET to show the cropping frame, adjust the size and aspect ratio using the dials, and save the cropped image as a new file.

For advanced movie shooting with the CANON EOS 77D:

1. Set the power switch to the movie icon and the Mode Dial to M.

2. Set the ISO speed by pressing the ISO button and turning the Main Dial or Quick Control Dial (ISO range is 100-12800).

3. Set the shutter speed (1/4000 sec. to 1/25 sec. depending on frame rate) by turning the Main Dial.

4. Set the aperture by turning the Quick Control Dial.

5. Focus on the subject and press the Movie shooting button to record.
