To ensure safe operation of the SEARS KENMORE 625-384500, please adhere to these rules:

Use the filter on a potable, safe-to-drink, home COLD water supply only. The filter cartridge will not purify water or make it safe to drink.

DO NOT use on HOT water exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.

Protect the water filter housing and piping from freezing. Water freezing in the housing will break it.

Operate only within water pressures of 40 psi (minimum) to 100 psi (maximum). If your house pressure is over the maximum, install a pressure reducing valve in the water supply pipe to the filter.

Check with your local public works department for plumbing codes to ensure installation follows local guidelines.

When planning the installation of the SEARS KENMORE 625-384500, consider the following variables:

The water filter housing inlet and outlet internal threads are 3/8 inch NPT.

Determine the existing plumbing type (copper, threaded, etc.) and nominal size (1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, etc.).

Ensure you have the necessary tools and consider your plumbing skills and the cost of materials needed.

Ensure there is enough space available for installing the filter housing. Be sure to allow a minimum space of 1-1/2 inches under the filter for removing the sump to change the cartridge.

Locate the water filter housing on the cold water supply pipe, under the kitchen and/or bathroom sink, to filter the cold drinking water.

Step 1: Apply several wraps of Teflon tape to the threads of both compression adaptors.

Step 2: CAREFULLY turn the compression adaptors into the water filter head inlet and outlet and tighten. Do not cross-thread or overtighten, as this may crack the head.

Step 3: Turn off the water supply to the sink cold pipe. Open the sink cold faucet to relieve pressure in the pipe. If using a single lever mixing faucet, also close the hot water shutoff valve.

Step 4: Use a tubing cutter to remove a section of the cold water pipe. Remove all burrs and rough edges with sandpaper or emery-cloth.

Step 5: Place a nut and brass ferrule from the compression elbow fittings onto both pipe ends. Connect the elbows to the sink cold water pipe.

Step 6: Using ferrules and compression nuts, cut and fasten a length of tubing (allowing some slack) from the cold water pipe to the filter head inlet compression adaptor.

Step 7: Cut tubing to the length needed to allow some slack and fasten tubing to the filter outlet side compression adaptor, returning it to the sink cold water pipe.

Step 8: Check that all fittings are tightened.

Step 9: Remove the sump from the filter head and install the filter cartridge before turning on the water supply.

Step 1: Turn off the water supply to the sink cold pipe and open the faucet to relieve pressure.

Step 2: Use a tubing cutter to remove a section of the sink cold water pipe. Use sandpaper or emery-cloth to clean and remove all burrs from both pipe ends.

Step 3: Create soldered assemblies for the inlet and outlet. After they have cooled, apply Teflon tape or pipe joint compound to the pipe threads, then turn them into the filter head and tighten.

Step 4: Solder the filter housing assemblies to the cold water shutoff valve. Wrap a wet rag around the assembly to reduce heat transfer through the pipe and into the filter head.

Step 5: Protect the filter housing from soldering heat and complete the connections to the faucet cold water pipe.

Step 6: Remove the sump from the filter head and install the filter cartridge before turning on the water supply.

Caution: Heat created when soldering can damage the water filter housing. Always use procedures to protect the housing from heat.

Step 1: Close the nearest shutoff valve on the water supply pipe to the filter. Open the sink cold water faucet to relieve pressure.

Step 2: Turn the sump to the left (clockwise) to remove it from the filter head. Be careful, as the sump is full of water. Do not lose the large o-ring seal.

Step 3: Ensure the inside of the sump is clean. Use hot, soapy water if necessary.

Step 4: Remove the wrapper from the new filter cartridge and insert the cartridge into the sump. Observe markings on the cartridge to ensure it is oriented correctly.

Step 5: Lightly lubricate the o-ring seal in the sump with silicone grease or Vaseline. Ensure it is fully seated in the groove.

Step 6: Hold the sump up to the filter head, aligning the center hole in the cartridge with the protrusion on the bottom of the head.

Step 7: Turn the sump counter-clockwise onto the filter head and tighten securely. Do not cross-thread.

Step 8: Open the sink cold faucet. Slowly open the water supply shutoff valve and allow the housing to fill.

Step 9: Close the sink faucet and check for leaks between the sump and the head.

Step 10: For Taste and Odor Cartridges, open the faucet for 2 to 3 minutes after installation to purge harmless carbon particles (fines) until the water runs clear.

The life of a cartridge depends on how much water you use and the amount of sediment, taste, or odor in your water. You will know it is time to replace the cartridge when you first notice the return of the unwanted substance in your water.
