Courier New: Courier New font identifies messages shown on the machine’s LCD.

Before attempting any printing operation with your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW, confirm the following:

• Make sure you have installed the correct software and drivers for your machine.

• For USB or network cable users: Make sure the interface cable is physically secure.

Selecting the correct type of paper:

For high-quality printing, it is important to select the correct type of paper. Be sure to read the information about acceptable paper before buying paper, and to determine the printable area depending on the settings in the printer driver or in the application you use to print.

Simultaneous printing, scanning and faxing:

Your machine can print from your computer while sending or receiving a fax into memory or while scanning a document into the computer. Fax sending will not be stopped during printing from your computer. However, when the machine is copying or receiving a fax on paper, it pauses the printing operation, and then continues printing when copying or fax receiving has finished.

Firewall (Windows):

If your computer is protected by a firewall and you are unable to network print, network scan, or PC-FAX, you may need to configure the firewall settings. If you are using the Windows Firewall and you installed the drivers using the steps in the installer, the necessary firewall settings have been already set. If you are using any other personal firewall software, see the User’s Guide for your software or contact the software manufacturer.

The control panel of your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW includes the following components:

1. NFC (Near Field Communication) symbol: You can use card authentication by touching an IC card to the NFC symbol on the control panel.

2. Touchscreen Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): Access menus and options by pressing them on the touchscreen.

3. Menu Buttons:

• (Back): Press to go back to the previous menu.

• (Home): Press to return to the Home screen.

• (Cancel): Press to cancel an operation.

4. Dial Pad: Press the numbers to dial telephone or fax numbers and to enter the number of copies.

5. LED Power Indicator: The LED lights up depending on the machine’s power status. When the machine is in Sleep Mode, the LED blinks.

6. Power On/Off:

• Press to turn the machine on.

• Press and hold to turn the machine off. The touchscreen displays [Shutting Down] and stays on for a few seconds before turning itself off. A connected external telephone or Telephone Answering Device (TAD) will always remain available.

Note: If you turn the machine off using the Power On/Off button, it will still clean the print head periodically to maintain print quality. To prolong print head life, provide better ink efficiency, and maintain print quality, keep your machine connected to a power source at all times.

You can access all machine options by pressing or swiping on the LCD. The Home Screen shows the machine’s status when it is idle. Here are the main features of the touchscreen:

1. Date & Time: Displays the date and time set on the machine.

2. Quiet Mode: This icon appears when the [Quiet Mode] setting is set to [On]. This mode reduces printing noise, but the print speed becomes slower.

3. Modes: Press to switch between modes like [Fax], [Copy], [Scan], [Secure Print], [Web], [Apps], [USB], [A3 Copy Shortcuts], [Download Software], and [Print Head Cleaning].

4. [Ink]: Displays the approximate available ink volume. Press to access the [Ink] menu. An error icon appears if an ink cartridge is low or has a problem.

5. [Settings]: Press to access the [Settings] menu.

6. Wireless Status: This icon shows the wireless network status:

• Grayed out icon: Not connected to a wireless access point/router or the wireless setting is disabled.

• Three-level indicator: Shows the current wireless signal strength.

• Exclamation mark icon: The wireless access point/router cannot be detected.

7. [Shortcuts]: Create shortcuts for frequently-used operations. Three tabs are available with six shortcuts on each tab.

8. Information icon: Appears when new information from Brother is available (requires an internet connection). Press the icon to view details.

9. Warning icon: Appears when there is an error or maintenance message. Press the icon to view details.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT press the LCD with a sharp object such as a pen or stylus. It may damage the machine.

The method for loading paper into your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW depends on the paper size and the tray you are using. Always fan the stack of paper well before loading to prevent jams.

For Tray #1, #2, and #3:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. If loading paper larger than A4/Letter, press and hold the universal guide release button while pulling out the front of the tray. For A3/Ledger/Legal paper, push the green slider to extend the tray until it locks.

3. Gently press and slide the paper width guides and paper length guide to fit the paper size you are using.

4. Fan the stack of paper well.

5. Gently load the paper with the printing surface face down. The orientation (landscape or portrait) depends on the paper size.

6. Ensure the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark.

7. Gently adjust the paper width guides to touch the edges of the paper.

8. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

9. Pull out the paper support until it locks into place, and unfold the paper support flap.

For the Multi-purpose (MP) Tray:

1. Open the MP tray.

2. Gently press and slide the MP tray paper guides to match the paper width.

3. Load up to one sheet of paper with the printing surface face up until the front edge touches the paper feed rollers.

4. Using both hands, gently adjust the MP tray paper guides to fit the paper.

5. Pull out the paper support and unfold the flap.

Note: When you load a different paper size, you must change the Paper Size setting in the machine’s menu.

You can load documents using either the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or the scanner glass on your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW.

Using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF):

The ADF can hold multiple pages and feeds each sheet individually. It supports paper weights from 64 to 120 g/m² and can handle 2-sided documents up to A3 size.

1. Fan the pages of your document well.

2. Adjust the paper guides to fit the document size.

3. Place your document face up in the ADF until you feel it touch the feed stoppers and the machine beeps.

IMPORTANT: Do not use paper that is curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, or taped. Do not leave documents on the scanner glass, as this may cause the ADF to jam.

Using the Scanner Glass:

Use the scanner glass to scan, copy, or fax one page at a time, or for items that cannot be fed through the ADF like books or thick documents.

1. Ensure the ADF is empty.

2. Lift the document cover.

3. Place the document face down in the upper left corner of the scanner glass, aligning it with the guides.

4. Close the document cover.

IMPORTANT: If you are scanning a book or thick document, do not forcefully close or press on the document cover.

Follow these steps to make a copy using your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW:

1. Make sure you have loaded the correct size paper in the paper tray.

2. Load your document in the ADF or on the scanner glass.

3. Press [Copy] on the touchscreen.

4. On the copy screen, you can change settings if needed:

• Number of Copies: Use the – or + buttons, or press the number to display a keyboard for entry.

• [Options]: Press to change settings like Enlarge/Reduce, Paper Type, Density, and more for the next copy only.

• Current Setting Indications: Press areas like Document Size or Actual Size to change those specific settings.

5. Press [Mono Start] for a black and white copy or [Colour Start] for a color copy.

To interrupt copying, press the (Cancel) button.

You can scan and send data directly to a computer from the control panel of your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW. The following steps are for scanning to a file (PDF).

1. Load your document.

2. Press [Scan] > [to PC] > [to File].

3. If the machine is connected over a network, press the up or down arrows to display the computer you want to send the data to, and then select the computer name.

4. If prompted to enter a PIN, use the touchscreen to enter the four-digit PIN for the computer and press [OK].

5. To change settings temporarily, press [Options]. You can adjust settings like:

• 2-sided Scan

• Colour Setting

• Resolution

• File Type

• Document Size

6. After selecting your desired settings, press [OK].

7. Press [Start]. The machine starts scanning. If you are using the scanner glass for a multi-page document, follow the LCD instructions to complete the job.

To send a fax from your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW, follow these steps:

1. Load your document in the ADF or place it on the scanner glass.

2. Press [Fax] on the touchscreen.

3. Enter the fax number in one of the following ways:

• Dial Pad: Enter the fax number manually using the dial pad on the control panel.

• Call History: Press [Call History] and select a number from Redial, Outgoing Call, or Caller ID History.

• Address Book: Press [Address Book] and select a stored number or group.

4. To change settings for this fax, press [Options]. You can adjust Resolution, Contrast, 2-sided Fax, and other settings.

5. Press [Fax Start].

• If you are using the ADF, the machine starts scanning and sending the document.

• If you are using the scanner glass, the machine scans the first page. When the touchscreen displays [Next page?], do one of the following:

• Press [No] if you are finished scanning pages. The machine will start sending.

• Press [Yes] to scan another page. Place the next page on the scanner glass, and then press [OK]. Repeat for all pages.

If you notice a print quality problem, such as a horizontal line or a blank space in the text or graphics, you can clean the print head from the machine’s control panel.

Standard Cleaning:

1. Press [Ink] on the touchscreen.

2. Press [Print Head Cleaning].

3. Press [Start].

The machine cleans the print head. After cleaning, it is recommended to print a Print Quality Check Sheet to see if the issue is resolved.

Special Cleaning (if standard cleaning does not help):

The Special cleaning method is more powerful but consumes more ink. Use it only if you have cleaned the print head several times and the print quality has not improved.

1. Press [Ink] > [Print Head Cleaning].

2. Press and hold the (Cancel) button for five seconds.

The machine starts the special cleaning process.

IMPORTANT: Do not touch the print head. Touching it may cause permanent damage and may void the warranty.

When the BROTHER MFC-J6955DW displays a message that an ink cartridge needs replacing, follow these steps:

1. Open the ink cartridge cover on the front of the machine.

2. Press the lock release lever for the ink cartridge color indicated on the LCD to release it, then remove the cartridge from the machine.

3. Open the new ink cartridge bag for the correct color and take out the ink cartridge.

4. If you are replacing the black ink cartridge, shake it horizontally 15 times before inserting it.

5. Insert the new ink cartridge in the direction of the arrow on the label. Each color has its own correct position.

6. Gently push the area marked “PUSH” on the cartridge until it clicks into place.

7. Close the ink cartridge cover. The machine will reset the ink dot counter for the replaced cartridge.

IMPORTANT:

• Only use genuine Brother supplies for best results.

• Do not remove ink cartridges unless you need to replace them, as this may cause the machine to misread the ink quantity.

• Do not touch the chip on the ink cartridge as this can prevent the machine from detecting it.

If your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW has a paper jam, the LCD will display a message indicating the location of the jam. Follow these steps based on the location:

Jam Front/Rear:

1. Unplug the machine from the electrical socket.

2. Pull the paper tray(s) completely out of the machine.

3. Slowly remove the jammed paper.

4. Open the scanner cover by lifting from the finger holds on each side.

5. Slowly pull any jammed paper out from under the print head area. If the print head is in the right corner, you cannot move it. Close the cover, reconnect the power, and then hold down the (Cancel) button until the print head moves to the center before unplugging again.

6. Check the corners inside the machine for any small scraps of paper.

7. Gently close the scanner cover.

8. At the back of the machine, open the Jam Clear Cover and slowly pull out any jammed paper.

9. Close the Jam Clear Cover, push the paper tray(s) back in, and reconnect the power cord.

Document Jam in ADF:

1. Remove any paper from the ADF that is not jammed.

2. Open the ADF cover.

3. Pull the jammed document out. If it is jammed in the bottom, lift the ADF document support to remove it.

4. Close the ADF cover.

Here are some of the most common error and maintenance messages for the BROTHER MFC-J6955DW and their solutions:

Brother Web Connect allows your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW to access online services like Google Drive™, Dropbox, Evernote®, OneDrive, and Box to upload scanned files or download and print files directly. To set it up, follow these general steps:

Step 1: Create an account with the online service.

Using a computer, visit the website of the service you want to use (e.g., drive.google.com) and create an account if you do not already have one.

Step 2: Apply for Brother Web Connect access.

1. On a computer with Brother software installed, launch the Brother Utilities application.

2. Select your model, click Do More, and then click Brother Web Connect.

3. The Brother Web Connect page will launch in your browser. Select the service you want to use.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions to apply for access. You will be given a temporary ID that is valid for 24 hours.

Step 3: Register your account on the machine.

1. On your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW, press the [Web] or [Apps] icon.

2. Select the service you want to register.

3. Press [Register/Delete] > [Register Account].

4. When prompted, enter the temporary ID you received in Step 2.

5. When prompted, enter an account name to be displayed on the LCD.

6. Choose whether to set a PIN for the account to prevent unauthorized access.

7. Confirm the information. Your account is now registered, and you can use the service from your machine.

Before you begin, you will need to know your wireless network’s name (SSID) and password (Network Key). You can configure your BROTHER MFC-J6955DW using the Setup Wizard on the control panel.

1. On the machine’s control panel, press [Settings] > [Network] > [WLAN(Wi-Fi)] > [Find Wi-Fi Network].

2. When [Enable WLAN?] appears on the screen, press [Yes]. The wireless setup wizard will start.

3. The machine will search for available wireless networks and display a list of SSIDs.

4. Use the up or down arrows to select the SSID for your network, and then press [OK].

5. Enter the Network Key (password) using the touchscreen keyboard.

6. Press [OK] to apply your settings.

7. The machine will attempt to connect to your wireless network. If the connection is successful, the LCD will display [Connected].

If your wireless access point supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup™), you can use the [WPS/Push Button] option in the [WLAN(Wi-Fi)] menu for a simpler setup process.
